28 Degrees - New $8 Monthly Fee (Effective 17/9/24). Alternatives?

Hey all,

Just got an email about the 28 Degrees Mastercard introducing a new monthly card fee of $8 per month, which is quite steep as I only use it for travel and YouTube Argentina.

Any other recommendations for alternatives?

submitted my cancellation request just now. Still haven't received the email yet.

  • -2

Just cancelled. Used it for my overseas trips. Any recommendations for a free card debit/credit that has zero fees for international travel?

  • I didn't take notice of the email because it was addressed from 'CreditLine', which I had never heard of and assumed it was spam.
Will be cancelling once I've moved things over to another card…

  • +1

Hate the $8 fee but $5000 of shopper protection every year is well worth it.

    • You do know there is a $20k cap right?

      • I don't, how much is it? I already claimed more than $15000 since I got the card several years ago.

        I don't remember seeing this on the PDS… 🤔

        It's not super clear https://pds.28degreescard.com.au/resources/media/28_Degrees_…

But thanks for sharing. I may need to ask or cancel ask my partner to create an account 😅

        • +2

This is an amazing feature. I would keep the card till the 20K limit is exhausted.

        • It’s in the darker box on page 2 - 20,000 limit to policy

        • What do you typically claim on to even hit 15k in a few years?

          • +2

@reactor-au: $1000 on a LG TV, $800 on a dishwasher, all my bunnings tools, gaming monitor, robot vaccum, clothes… Everything I buy.

It takes a bit of time to keep receipts and spreadsheet but worth the $$$

        • Create an account of what? Shopper protection is no more..

I currently pay my YouTube premium acct using 28 deg.

Just tried changing it to nab debit card (from Citi bank) but getting an error card can't be used. Any idea on how to add this card?

    • +1

I'm on YT premium pakistan, I changed from 28D to NAB debit card (citibank) via this https://www.youtube.com/paid_memberships

Just click edit on your primary card, add the new one, and set it as primary.

      • it doesn't seem to be accepting numerous cards. nab debit (citi) and also normal nab card. "this card can't be added"… tried on incognito as well.

        • You need to tell us which YT premium country you are using, it can be different for different countries.

It could also be in google payments. Find the ozb thread you signed up from see how it was originally done.

          • @CodeXD: sorry. argentina. The link in the original post is no longer working. " we couldn't verify your country"!! I think it might be an option to keep 28deg for youtube premium for the time being…

edit: jee just realised yt charges $32pm in Aust! Will keep this option for now.

            • +1

@mrtin: So far Macquarie debit card works for Argentina, I've got three of them going atm albeit I get a warning email about my credit card details needing updating every month.

      • I am on YT premium India. I need to a new card but cannot just change.
When I tried to add Bendigo card, it asked for an address. Should I use an Indian address, or address with my credit card?

        • +2

I was able to add my CBA.
I think I first had it as back up, then changed to to primary. Got deducted $3.43 today

    • +1

I also tried adding a new card on YT Argentina (Nab Visa) and got 'This Card Can't Be Added' error. I was VPN'ed into Argentina, and no luck :(

      • Will have to keep 28deg if we want to keep yt ars

  • closed mine after the last data breach, didn't have purchase protection so it wasn't worth keeping

  • +6

Just got confirmation yesterday evening of account closure. Also got a SMS from Bendigo Bank saying they have an unprecedented increase in applications over the last few days and assessment times are unknown. LOL #ozbargained

    • Just got confirmation yesterday evening of account closure.

How long after you submitted the close card request?

      • +1

4 calendar days - 2 working days, 2 weekend days. Emails came through on a late Sunday afternoon.

        • +1

Thanks. I guess they also overloaded with number of people jumped ship. Normally, with other banks, i would get the closure confirmation email almost next business day.

        • Also put through the cancellation request last Thursday but still showing "In progress" on Latitude Manage Account page. It does look like they are overwhelmed with people closing their accounts.

          • @scotty: Lol, I must be so lucky !!!

Just put the closure request in app an hour ago, and within minute I got 2 emails. First one acknowledged the request then the second one confirmed the account is now closed !!!

I login back in about 5 minutes after closed and saw that the account is gone. It can be "unhide" in the Settings.

Farewell 28 Degrees. I'll always remember you fondly as the "Wizard" back in the days that I can withdraw cash from ATM overseas without worry about any fees.

          • @scotty: Finally got my account closure email, 9 days later. So long and thanks for all the fish!

    • My closure email came through after five days.
The closure letter was password protected with my date of birth DDMMYYYY.

  • I keep getting an error when trying to close the account in the app bah

    • I did on app as well so went onto pc and logged in and it went through to pending current, awaiting cancellation

    • i was getting errors closing via the app too so had to do it via pc - although still waiting for confirmation as they prob had influx of cancellations lol

  • They only give 40 days notice is unacceptable. I just found i need to return something i bought online. What will happen if the store processed refund and the card isnt valid anymore? Will the card provider contact me and sending a cheque maybe?

    • +1

You will just need to call them, and request a refund to your bank. It will come through in 2-3 days.

  • Closed the card through the app today. Was useless to me and hadn't used it in a few years. Have the fee free citibank premier for life and an Amex for my everyday spends.

    • Not difficult using amex for daily driver?

      • +1

Nope, 90% of shops I spend at take amex…

        • +1

ok will start using amex then. i have exact same citi free for life and essential amex grandfathered so free as well

  • New features will be available including a new rewards program where you will be eligible for a $10 e-gift card every statement period when you spend $1,000

It looks like the partner they are partnering with is eonX, so likely this might be the list of gift cards

    • May interest some people, but being charged a fee on card I rarely use is deal breaker for me….

  • 28% interest?

  • Anyone still not receiving email from them about the changes?

    • +1

I am still not receiving the email.

      • Thanks. Haven’t heard anything from them.

      • Received and closed now!

    • +1

@niniksa Haven't received anything yet, either.

    • +1

@niniksa Scratch that. It was in my Junk folder. From "CreditLine". I'll be cancelling, too.

      • +1

Thanks. Haven’t heard anything from them.

  • Poll ?

  • Damn it, I'll need to change over a bunch of payments thanks to these morons.

Anyone know of another credit card that will work for Youtube Argentina?

Was there any consequence for Latitudes data breach? I'm guessing not.

  • Cancelled yesterday, put the reason for cancel was my annual card free card now had a monthly fee that was very disappointing Latitude.

Got confirmation this morning of the cancellation, I am sure they just don't care..

    • your reason was too polite Sir….

  • Applied for macquaire platinum debit card(mainly withdrawal money overseas), await for delivery. Can someone tell me can I use this DC as credit card in overseas? If it does what's the point to apply bankwest zero platinum CC for overseas spending. Can someone explain?

    • how does this card work? any advantage over Ubank debit card?

    • +1

      one debit one credit bro

      • +1

If it does what's the point to apply bankwest zero platinum CC.

Do you know the different between debit and credit? One to use your own money immediately, and the other is borrow from the bank to use and pay back after 44 -55 days.

        • thank you for your reply. I don't mind to use my own money immediately.
Situation: going overseas in September, did some research on ozbargin, conclusion: most people have one DC, one CC for oversea travel ( I don't know why they need two different card), I got declined when apply bankwest zero CC.

Oversea plan: use Macquarie platinum DC to take some cash from overseas ATM for pocket money in local spending (can I do that?), also want to use Macquarie platinum DC to pay goods if they don't accept cash.(can I do that?)

Question: Macquarie platinum DC has no International ATM transactions fee and no International purchases fee as per their website. Does those two fee free condition apply when I cashout from overseas ATM and use the card to pay goods?

          • +1

@heroheroine: Am in the same situation. Applied for Macquarie debit card to use as a replacement for the 28D (didnt use Price protection) and for overseas travel next month.
Yes you can withdraw cash from overseas ATM and use card to pay for goods with no fees (except possible ATM fee charged by the particular ATM)

          • @heroheroine:

I don't know why they need two different card

As I said, some people (including me) preferred to use other people money when paying for goods & service.

Debit is purely for ATM if I can utilise CC for other payments while overseas.

Also, some CC (in addition to no fx fees) can also earn you points - CBA cards came to mind.

    • +2

there are certain situations where some merchants might not accept debit cards versus credit cards…some more common ones are Car Rental or Hotel Holding Bonds…

Fraud exposure too…ie. own money immediately versus banks money…

  • +1

This is a serious pain and no where near enough notice. Going to get hit with this fee before an alternative credit card arrives to switch all my payments over to.

    • +1

yes not enough notice. they have been free for like forever and this is drastic change at least 3 months notice

  • I still haven't received email about this until today….only learning about it here. would slim chance this is targeted to majority but keep some members?

  • +3

Well, they will lose my business for sure, have been using their card for my monthly travel to Turkiye and Argentina

  • +2

I applied for the Bendigo Bank Ready card on the 7th of August and was approved on the 13th if anyone interested in rough approval times.

    • +1

I also applied and uploaded all my docos on 7th but haven't heard anything back yet

    • +1

I applied on 8th, nothing beside sms about unprecedented increased in applications and unknown timeframe for assessments.

  • +1

I'd be so keen to see metrics on percentage of users cancelling within 30 days of this change…
I've put up with $1.95 fee to pay via bpay but no way im putting up with a monthly fee even if it was 50 cents. Their app sucks. I have had so much trouble getting app payments to work consistently. I keep getting app payments as unavailable 😒

    • Bpay charge only applies if you “push” $$ from you bank acct. no charge if you “pull” from 28d

      • Is the pull consistently working for you? I get sorry we're unable to process 3/4 times and if i call they refund the $1.95 but who's got time to stuff around waiting in a phone queue? Its always one day out when my payment is due so cant try again later and risk late fees.
Also any other credit card company charging a fee to pay your bill via bpay? Genuinely curious if there are other idiotic financial institutions around 🤔?

        • No, the pull will not charge you .1.95 if they charge you means you are doing the push.
Yes pull 100% work alllll the time.

No others AFAIK. Latitude is really special… /s

          • @CyberMurning: Doh - i meant to write push not pull. Weird that it's failing for me. My wife has an account too and doesnt have problems paying from within app.

        • +1

I've been using the 'pay my account' method since they introduced the $1.95 bpay fee and I've never had it failed. They even allow you to overpay by ~$200 so I preload it with enough for a few months worth of purchase (notably monthly youtube premium and netflix turkey giftcards) so I don't need to check it monthly.

        • I also got those "unable to process" crap. Complained and were advised there is a couple hours around midnight (cannot remember exact detail) that you cannot use that payment method.

  • Is Bendigo Bank Purchase Protection same thing as 28 Degrees Shopper protection?

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/818657

    • No.

      Purchase Protection:
If in the 90 days from the date you take possession of a covered item purchased on your eligible card, the covered item is stolen, accidentally damaged or permanently lost, we will pay the lesser of the original purchase price or up to $5,000

  • How long are BankWest taking to process applications at the moment? I reckon they are probably receiving a surge of applications, I've submitted my proof of income and waiting to hear back from them with final approval.

  • How long does it take for the account to be cancelled? Cancelled 5 days ago on the app and I can still see my account.

    • Mine disappeared immediate after got the confirmation email.

  • Which card has 28 Degrees Shopper protection ?

    • +1

No other card has it. If you want to keep it you need to pay $8 p/m to continue shopper protection with the 28 degrees card.

      • XD

        • -1

i dont get how it can be so good i mean we buy something and then we need to keep checking its prices? if we miss then cant claim.
i mean the time to check those are also money, right? unless you have no job and do that full time? but again if no job how can you afford a credit card :D

          • +1

@CyberMurning: No need to overthink something you can't get anymore if you don't already have it.

          • +2

            @CyberMurning: It is worth it.
Sometime you buy something then a few weeks later it appears on Ozbargain at half the price.
Then you can claim the price difference.

It happens more often then you think.

          • +2

@CyberMurning: You don't really have to keep checking the price, just set alert on ozb for the item and claim when someone posts it for cheaper.

          • +2

            @CyberMurning:

i mean the time to check those are also money, right?

Well there's a whole website dedicated to those price drops. You can even set up alerts.

Some people even write comments for free in the forums section too, even though time is money. :)

          • +1

            @CyberMurning:

if we miss then cant claim

Nope, the price doesn't need to be current for you to make a claim. I've made plenty of claims for items that were on sale months before.

            • -2

              @eecan: Amazing!
How they could verify if thats not current pricing? I mean screenshots can be photoshopped

              • +1

@CyberMurning: Yeah, it sounds too good to be true. So they stopped offering it. I've already saved over $7K in claim payments over the years. Aiming for the $20K lifetime limit before they pull the offer for existing customers as well. I'll even cop the $96/year fee!

              • @CyberMurning: They don't even ask for proof of the reduced pricing unless the claim is over $200…

The policy is so lenient that it feels like you'd be taking the piss if you abused it.
