17.5 Hour Flight Perth to Paris, What The Hell?

I will soon board that flight with Qantas and am wondering how the hell am I going to make it ?

What if I'm in the middle seat for those 18hours ?
Will there be enough fuel in the aircraft ? I mean this is a long trip
Can we exercise or walk / run somewhere in the plane ?
How many meals ?
How many days to recover from this experiences? are our bones getting thinner like after time-spent in the outter space ?

Shouldnt you have asked these questions before booking the flight?

ozb rules no 1. book first think check later
ozb rules no 2. post about it instead

OP probably thought there is a connecting flight somewhere in the sky

  • -4

if travelling with a hot gf, i dont mind 17hrs on the "hot" sky

    • Rofl wtf

    • +2

Unemployed is definitely not travelling with a hot GF.

jokes aside … nah not a good idea … 100% NOT a good idea.
unless OP wants to be featured in a news article RE "disoriented passenger causes havoc - flight turned around - passenger hauled off flight + charged".

I don't take benzo's … but if someone was to use in this scenario …
You should know the drug + be prescribed regularly.

How much you'd normally be prescribed in 1 day … then only take 1/4 of that amount … altitude/flying effects drug interactions to a large degree.
      Just saying.

But NAH … benzo's == 100% NOT a good idea for long-haul flights (or even flying in general).

[EDIT] … forgot to add - SHOULD ask prescribing DR says about taking benzo's during a flight.

how the hell am I going to make it ?

Sleep. Watch a movie. Watch a TV show. Play video games. Play digital card or board games. Read a book. Read a travel guide. Learn a language. Get some work done. Study. Listen to an audiobook. Listen to a podcast. Listen to music. Daydream. Eat. Drink. Chill. Or rawdog it and do nothing. Or pay for data and browse OzBargain.

What if I'm in the middle seat for those 18hours ?

Not a big deal. Or you can pay to select your seat.

Will there be enough fuel in the aircraft?

    Yes. Not your business.

Can we exercise or walk / run somewhere in the plane?

Walk? Yes. Stretch? Yes. Run? No, they should treat you as a hijacker if you run and restrain you.

    How many meals ?

You should be able to check.

How many days to recover from this experiences?

    0.

Ok.. but what is he going to do for the remaining 13 hours?!

    • I know it was in bold like the other questions but you forgot to answer the last part - will his bones get thinner from this trip?

  • +1

    Karma farming ..

    • Karma immediately destroyed when you consume a chicken / pig / etc. that suffers in worse than economy for their entire life, only to be liberated by a slit throat.

  • +10

No idea as I only travel business class so have not encountered those issues.

  • -5

How many days to recover from this experiences? are our bones getting thinner like after time-spent in the outter space ?

don't worry. it's sooo safe to be exposed to radiation like that. it's not like radiologists hide behind lead/concrete all day. CT / xrays scans are safe just trust the science.

  • Lucky you!

  • +1

    i barely survive 10hrs flight

  • Maybe long-flight air travel isn't for you….

  • +6

    Just swim next time smh

  • just pull the emergency exit

I will soon board that flight with Qantas and am wondering how the hell am I going to make it ?

    Chances are you won't.

What if I'm in the middle seat for those 18hours ?

Be prepared to fight for both armrests

Will there be enough fuel in the aircraft ? I mean this is a long trip

    No.

Can we exercise or walk / run somewhere in the plane ?

No. On longer flights, the aisle is patrolled. Bathroom breaks are supervised.

    How many meals ?

How many can you eat before the plane runs out of fuel?

How many days to recover from this experiences?

Irrelevant as you won't make it.

are our bones getting thinner like after time-spent in the outter space ?

Yes. If you do make it, years of physical therapy. Also, don't forget about blood clots. Make sure you get some tight tights.

    help

Cancel, take the financial hit and take the safe way - it's only 6 months on a leaky boat.

    • +1

Will the boat have enough fuel? How many meals will I get? What if I'm in a middle seat? Will it mess with my bones like those rich people on the submarine? Will I make it? Help

      • Leaky boats are proven unlike these 17.5 hour flights or fancy new subs.

  • just pack some headphones and a travel pillow and relax.

  • LOL!

They have Perth to London non stop too but I wouldn't do it.

I'd rather break it into 2x 13hr flights and stop in Dubai / Doha etc (from Melbourne).

I once did London to Dubai, then Dubai to Hong Kong, Hong Kong to Melbourne. Arrived afternoon so I ended up having dinner in 3 continents.

    • What did you have?

      • +1

2 minutes noodle for all 3 meals

    • +2

I absolutely hate breaking up the flight unless I can avoid it, the knowledge that you need to crawl back into that fart infested tin can and do it all over again makes it 100 times worse for me.

Whereas I find time becomes fairly meaningless after a while on a really long flight. Just sit back and watch a couple of seasons of succession.

  • +7

I can see why you're unemployed now.

    • beat me to it hahahaha

  • It's unfortunate there's no Wifi so we can't get 17 hourly updates whilst you'e in the air!

    • I go for 8 - 9 hours without wifi on a daily basis

  • Drugs are bad… MMMMMMMMMMkay

  • Ask the pilot to go via Antarctica instead, it's faster, jk of course.

  • +3

this community is attracting some proper nutters - i miss the days of the token bad driver without insurance, posting rubbish

it is like the smooth brains from r/Australia are spilling over

  • All the cool kids are raw dogging flights these days. Try it and report back OP

  • +2

    Raw dog it.

  • +1

The first and last 2 hours are for the Crew to set-up and un-set-up.

Plenty to do in between: Movies, walk, toilet, chat with your seatmate, drink (alcohol and non-alcohol), write journal, wash face, brush teeth, sponge bath, walk yo Business Clas, the upstairs of you're in 380, stare at screaming kids, headphone music, podcast, sleep.

    Repeat.

  • +1

Join the mile high club for a bit of fun and exercise during the flight.

    • +1

      km high club…

  • -2

Will there be enough fuel in the aircraft ?

    There often is.

    • But say there isn't

Air Crash Investigation S01E04 or S02E05 could be worth an watch before the flight

  • What if I'm in the middle seat for those 18hours ?

Surely you have selected your seat when booking so this doesn't happen!!?

Will there be enough fuel in the aircraft ? I mean this is a long trip

    Hopefully ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Can we exercise or walk / run somewhere in the plane ?

Its a normal plane, you can't exercise or run. The best you can do is walk to the toilet and back, stand around until you're told to go back to your seat.

    How many meals ?

No idea, but I guess 2 main meals and a snack or two.

How many days to recover from this experiences?

    2.75 days.

  • hmm, maybe try to go via boat see which one you like more

  • +2

    Harden up maybe?

I've done 38hrs straight (in transit), piece of cake.

    • I've done 38hrs straight

      Ha ha…

      Try flying Jetstar !!!

      • I have, had a cancellation before, hotel+ food reimbursed, booked on another flight the next day.

Had an extra day holiday, luckily I didn't have anything important, so worked out well.

Never flying them again of course

        • I have, had a cancellation before, hotel+ food reimbursed, booked on another flight the next day.

We got a $10 food voucher and had to pay for our own hotel. The flight booked the next morning then got cancelled too…

    • I did that rawdog. No food, drink, entertainment or toilets

  • What if I'm in the middle seat for those 18hours ?

you'd be insane not to pay to pick your seat and choose wisely.
Theres a vast difference in long haul economy comfort between what the best and worst seat selections(and a bit of luck) can offer

  • Just RawDawg it man, I RawDawg'ed my last Brisbane>LA!

    https://www.thestreet.com/travel/what-is-raw-dogging-a-fligh…

As for middle seat, just pay for Neighbour-free ;)

    • You should try Cebu Pacific — passengers there know how to fly. Get on, shut-up, sleep. They knew how to fly before it was a trend.

Red-eye Manila to Sydney. Low cost carrier.
A wide-body plane in all economy configuration with no recline ("pre-reclined")
Get on and find your seat - nobody at the door telling you left or right, just get on and sit down.
Take-off on time - nobody is special enough to wait for.
Lights off and the whole plane shuts-up and just sleeps. You didn't even really need ear-plugs.

Their economy only setup is pretty awesome, it means no cabin dividers. A flight attendant up front and one at the back of the plane can see the entire cabin. Also long-leg room seats have amazing leg-room, a full aisle with no bulkhead in the way.

    • Not eligible on this flight but thanks for the info I'll try next time :)

  • +1

Will there be enough fuel in the aircraft ? I mean this is a long trip

Usually, they won't make you get out and push it to the nearest servo.

  • +1

Honestly not that bad. It's amazing what we're capable of when we don't have much of a choice. Enjoy Paris

  • OP, Have you heard of Paris syndrome?

    • A real condition but it applies mainly to Japanese people. I'm afraid I already exactly know what to expect there :)

  • +1

Why are you doing that to yourself?

  • +1

You are probably going to run out of fuel. You are right.

  • You have nothing to worry about unless you see the cabin crew wearing parachutes.

  • Don’t worry, takeoff and landing are the riskiest parts of flying, so direct Perth to Paris reduces number of takeoffs and landing and thus improves your safety.

*not relevant if you need to fly from elsewhere in Aus or elsewhere in Europe.

  • Hi OP,

These concerns are common and perfectly natural.

I'm quite surprised you are a Qantas pilot.
