  • Ohh finally I get a nice offer.

Ever since it’s been paid off I keep getting bugger all

  • +5

Cheers @browser. I am glad I didn’t spit the dummy and immediately cancel after the piddly shopsmall offer. Got the same offer on 2 main cards and all subsidiaries

Edit Note: OP does highlight it, but it’s in app purchase so the normal just pay on Amex card instore doesn’t work

  • Can you buy giftcards and pay within the app

    • I would like to know this as well.

      • +2

        No

  • No love for Amex Essential again

    • +2

      Got it on my essential

      • Lucky you

      • +1

Same, first decent deal in ages

  • +1

    I got the shit offer

AmEx Spend $60 or More Using Ampol App at Participating Locations, Get $5 Back, up to 5 Times

    • you're gonna fill up your car 5 times eventually, not the worst deal imho

      • +3

well Ampol doesn't have the best prices and discounts so by the time the dip occurs probably fill up once before it expires

        • Variety? must be nice, in SA everyone just copies each other, if one station is 1.68, everyone is.

  • Will using the registered card via Apple Pay within the app work trigger the offer?

    • Guess not, paying in store will show a different merchant than app payment.

      • +1

I would still pay via the app but just by using Apple Pay. Reason I ask is that it won't let me add my card to the app for some reason so Apple Pay would be the only way I could pay.

        • That's a good point, didn't know you can select Apple Pay as a payment method, much better than store the card numbers in app.

In that case, guess it should be eligible, but I have not tried that before.

        • One of the exclusions states:

          • Excludes transactions made through a third party establishment or payment processor.

Would say Apple Pay would fall under this, much like PayPal.
I'm guessing they want a direct charge to your AMEX for this offer.

Let us know how you go if you choose Apple Pay and see if you get the credit.

    • @WookieMonster - are you able to answer? Normally with cc cashback deals - Apple pay is eligible - only third party platforms like Zip, Afterpay and paypal arent.

      • +7

I have made AMEX purchases via Apple Pay in-store at Ampol, EG Ampol and many other retailers in the past (as well as using Apple Pay online at Special Gift Cards when an AMEX cashback deal has been on) and have always received statement credits. I am not sure what would make this deal any different.

All Apple Pay (and Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet) does is store a tokenised digital copy of your AMEX credit card on your mobile wallet. However, you are still spending directly with your AMEX credit card when using a mobile wallet, as all the mobile wallet essentially does is hide the real credit card number from the merchant. If you were to make a transaction on the Ampol app via Apple Pay, the transaction should still show up as a transaction on the Ampol app on your credit card statement.

Zip, PayPal, Afterpay, etc are different, because you charge the transaction to that payment processor, and then that payment processor spins around and charges your card. The charge will appear to come directly from Zip or Afterpay or PayPal (rather than the Ampol app), which is why that would be an excluded transaction for this deal.

        • Deal is for in-app only. If the App allows payment from Apple Pay, then sure.

          • @roughana: App does prompt to use Apple Pay, almost appears as default option.

    • +2

I tried both ways. Both ways worked.

      • Can I please ask if you received the credit when you paid with Apple Pay?

        • +3

          Yes, worked using Apple pay.

      • same here, I have redeemed the offer twice - both payments via Apple Pay

  • just off the topic but any app that shows up to date petrol prices for petrol stations?

i use fuelmapaustralia but its semi up to date

    • +2

      petrolspy is pretty good

    • +4

You appear to be in NSW? If so, the two options I would recommend are:

      • FuelCheck NSW (which will only show you prices at service stations in NSW, plus participating service stations in the ACT).

      • PetrolSpy. PetrolSpy is not great for prices at VIC service stations, but that is presumably because it is only one of two jurisdictions that does not mandate fuel price reporting.

      • regulation of fuel prices in this nation is whacked

I don't think anyone feels sorry for using their chopper to lock in cheap prices

    • In WA you can use: https://www.fuelwatch.wa.gov.au/

I also use the BowserWatch app on my Android phone.

    • +1

If you are with NRMA (auto membership), their app shows current price pretty accurate, at least in my experience.

  • Can’t buy gift cards as it is via App

  • The price at the Ampol near Canberra Airport looks OK, presumably because of the nearby Costco Petrol. Other Ampols around Canberra look rather meh.

  • +4

There are several Ampol cashback offers and this seems like the best rate

    Offer Spend Cashback Rate
    AMEX $50 $10 20%
    Latitude $75 $10 13.33%
    CBA Yello $60 $5 8.33%
    NAB Goodies $70 $5 7.14%

Also it may stack with the current offer Save 8¢/L with Apple Pay in the Ampol App which expires today

  • +2

Combine with Woolworths Rewards 10x points offer, gives you another 500 points (on $50 spend), which is equivalent to another $2.50 off.

    • Does the WR offer work via the app or does it need to be payment and scan card in-store? I have linked my WR card just in case…

  • Does it have to be in 2 transactions or can we do $100 in one transaction and get $20 back?

    • Stop the pump when it reaches $50, pay then continue, just to be certain.

    • +2

Offer is limited to a maximum of $20 credit per Card and $10 credit per eligible transaction.

Yes you have to split them to two transactions

  • Got the offer on my card but have never used apps to pay for fuel.
Do you pay beforehand? Fill up and pay for the fuel via app while there?
    Thanks

    • +2

I never used Ampol app before but I'm assuming it's similar to others like BP so it would be (1) enter the pump number on the app; (2) fill up as per usual; and (3) pay on the app. You will need to have your payment detail saved beforehand.

    • -4

This is an Amex offer, you need to log into your Amex app, save offer and then just go to ampol and spend $50 to get the $10 credit back to your Amex card after

      • +3

Won't work if you pay in-store

Offer only valid for payments made in-app at participating Ampol locations in Australia

        • +1

Oh thanks for clarifying and that’s so fken annoying, now have to download an app and use your Amex card in that to pay for it

    • yes you fill up first before using the app to select pump and pay. turn on gps so the app knows which station you're at.
better than BPme where you have to select the pump before you start fueling and then you're supposed to leave your phone in the car :/

got a free coffee after filling up

  • +1

Always got misread by this Ampol, i ended with EG Ampol. How do you tell the right eligible Ampol if you are on the road (without proper check on the phone/web)?

    • +2

If it has Foodary, then it is included. But note there are some without Foodary that might be included too.

      • the ampol app tells you all the eligible pumps

        • +1

Yeah I know that champ. The question was if you were to tell without proper check on your phone.

    • +1

According to the Ampol store locator, the following Ampol service stations accept FuelPay (and therefore would participate in this deal):

      • All Ampol Foodary service stations across Australia, except Ampol Foodary Hazelbrook (198 Great Western Highway, Hazelbrook NSW 2779).

      • Ampol Mt Isa Miners Mate (105 Camooweal St Cnr Grace St, Mount Isa QLD 4825). This is not to be confused with the EG Ampol service station (which is next door).

      • Ampol Exmouth (Lot 315 Murat Rd, Exmouth WA 6707). There is only one Ampol in Exmouth, so it is hard to miss this one.

I am assuming you can figure out the Ampol in Mount Isa and the Ampol in Exmouth, so I will give you advice on how to tell you have just pulled into an Ampol Foodary:

      • The large price board (i.e. pylon) out the front has both Ampol and Foodary branding. Here is an example.

      • The convenience store building has Foodary branding on it (and this is usually located above the convenience store entrance). Here is an example.

      • In PetrolSpy is it just the Ampol logo and not the Ampol EG and Ampol WW logos?

        • +2

I would honestly not rely on the logos on PetrolSpy, because it is not 100% accurate.

Ampol Foodary service stations usually appear with Ampol logo on PetrolSpy, but there are some confusing exceptions:

          • An Ampol Woolworths logo was previously used for a number of Ampol Woolworths Metro service stations (before those were rebranded to Ampol Foodary), but some Ampol Foodary service stations are still listed as Ampol Woolworths on PetrolSpy. Additionally, I remember seeing one or two EG Ampol service stations using the Ampol Woolworths logo on PetrolSpy.

          • PetrolSpy lists an EG Ampol in New Town (TAS), but it is actually an Ampol Foodary (and that service station has never been an EG Ampol).

          • PetrolSpy lists an EG Ampol in Mittagong (NSW) with the Ampol logo, even though it is an EG Ampol.

Also, most Ampol franchisees use the Ampol logo on PetrolSpy, so you cannot easily tell the difference between an Ampol Foodary service station and a random Ampol franchisee service station.

The Ampol app is much better at listing what is an Ampol Foodary vs EG Ampol vs other Ampol (i.e. other Ampol franchisee). There is a Foodary filter on the Ampol app, so you can use that to only show Ampol Foodary service stations on the map if that is your preference.

  • How do I confirm location accepts the in-app payments?

    • The app or Ampol website

  • If EG Ampol not include then not worth it.

    Not many around anyway.

Also You need have app then add your AM card in it to pay.

    • EG Ampol and AmEx generally host separate offers from the AmEx/Ampol Foodary (and most Ampol Franchisees) offers.

At least this isn't like the Commbank Yello deals where only Ampol Foodary outlets participate (and excludes EG and all other Ampol Franchisees).

  • Isn’t August supposed to be the member month

    • +2

      in one or more transactions

You will have to go back and add another 2L in a separate transaction

  • Fuel at Ampol near me is always around 10c more than Metro

  • I got the offer on my business card also on employee card so hopefully I can use it 4X times.

  • Nothing on Velocity Platinum.

  • -3

Another bloody app to download to my phone. I will use it for this only and no other purpose. Not worth the $10 for the hassle. My time is more valuable.

    • +2

App didn't work at the gas station due to network connectivity issues.

      • +1

Exactly my point. In my case, I couldn't even sign up. There is a problem logging you in, it says.

What an absolute piece of shit.

        Let's downvote this.

        • +1

Apparently the app is working for a lot of people.

If you can't get it to work, look into the mirror, may be you can find the source of problem.

          • +1

@browser: I agree. Used it last night and the app worked really well. Fast & efficient.

      • app worked well for me - but i only used during Amex promotions

    • +3

That's the cost of the deal, no different than having to drive to a particular store to pickup a product.

AmEx and their business partners are not charities, they offer you a discount, they want something back. It's all part of the deal.

Your unwillingness to install an app is no reason to down vote, not worth your time, look elsewhere.

  • +2

App doesn't work after fueling up - can't find the pump and pay in-app. ("No pumps found. Fill up your car and refresh. Still don't see after refresh? Please pay in store") Ended up paying in store :(

  • +1

Drove to the station only found the app didn't work. I had to pay in store. Not good.

    • +2

If that happens again, try logout then log back in. Some of the apps, not just Ampol app, handle expired sessions very poorly, instead of logout the user or tell the user to re-login, they would just quietly not function.

BP app, requires users to select a pump first, so they know the app works before continuing. The app also allows fuelling when a station is closed (not all stations support this).

Ampol app, select after, has a minor convenience to choose from a short list of pumps that were in use.

      • Thanks for the tip, will try next time if the App does not work.

      • +1

App failed to work on Tuesday night 06/08, end up in paying in store, and only used my woolworth 4c off, their price is normally 10c higher in my local area. Only able to select pump after filling meaning you have to pay more if anything wrong with the app, i prefer BPME in this case.

        • +1

If you can’t select a pump in the app, don’t fill up! it can’t do it retrospectively.

          • +1

@Coops1: ampol app works differently, you select pump to pay AFTER you fill up

            • +1

@hughes: Thanks, was coming back to say just that after finally filling up last night. Use to BPMe which works differently. Noting, it only shows a pump number once somebody has put the pump back in position.

        • Did you try again?
Mine failed on last night trying for the first time. Feels like such a waste of effort setting up the app then fluffing about with it trying to pay then having to walk in and pay in the store anyway.

        • -1

Same with me. The app didn't work. Another fail of another publicly traded Aussie business. I'll never buy from ampol anymore

      • Same issue for me at Ampol foodary Cabramatta on 10th Aug. Not phone issue, just the station issue, I tried by my mobile and my wife's and also station's staff used his phone to try, cannot find any pump to pay.

I did used the app at another station later works fine.

I have sent a complaint email to Ampol feedback.

    • Failed for me too today as well. I did the close app, re-open app, failed. Logout app, close app, re-open app, re-login app, failed.

Asked the store clerk and he wasn't aware of any issues.

I do like the BP version so you know the app is working correctly.

For next time, does the pump numbers show up before fuelling or does it only show after you've used the pump? If it shows up beforehand, then its a good way knowing that it works.

Today was my first time using this app. I've sent feedback with screenshots and receipt, not sure it will go anywhere though.

      • I was trying to figure out today. Before you fill, you can see the list of other pumps that are ready for payment.
So you need to fill your fuel first and when you are finished, open the app at your station and when you refresh, your pump will appear for you to select and pay.

        • If there is no other car just done the fill, you can't know if the app work or not. Have to wait other one fill up the car first~

  • Got it 😀

  • Does this work with the Ampol AmpCharge EV chargers through the Ampol app?
Even if it does, there's no way I could use $50 of juice in one month :p

    • +1

It's not specifically excluded in the T&Cs, as it was previously (due to it using the AmpCharge app presumably), so…. maybe?

    • +1

Unfortunately I tried two sessions today, and now they come up as 'Ampcharge' instead of Ampol so we're probably out of luck.

      • Thanks for checking it out. At least the free coffee is still going strong?

  • How do you scan the everyday rewards to get 4c off per litre using the app
    Thanks

    • +1

      You cannot.

The only fuel discount offers you can claim when using FuelPay on the Ampol app are:

      • +1

        Thanks

      • +2

        Actually you can.
Once you link your Everyday Rewards card to the Ampol app, the 4C discount starts to show up.

        • +2

You can link the rewards card and 4c is displayed under the rewards section… However this cannot be used in conjunction with 6c app welcome discount
