This previously popular torch from Wuben is back on sale in multiple colours. While it's a tad more than last time you can get a further 5% off if you buy two. Because afterall you can never have too many lights!

There's two variants on the listing - 6500K colour temp (linked) and 5000K colour temp depending on your preference.

This one has two cool white Osram P9 6500K emitters and it's able to produce up to 1800lm of brightness for the first minute before dropping down. The other modes are high (400lm), medium (150lm), low (5lm), as well having strobe and SOS. It has a magnetic base and a clip for mounting, IPX8 water resistance recharges via USB-C.

There's additional accessories (not included) like a battery extender allowing you to use an 18650 battery instead of 18350, a headband strap and a motion sensor for toggling the light on the strap.

Mod 26/8: Available again for $32.99 (previously $33.59).

  • How much is the extender to fit 18650's since these I got but have zero 350's? Probably still can't be bothered even if cheap enough lol

    • +1

It's an option on the listing. Currently $13.33.

It should come with a protected 18350 cell.

The E7 is a bit picky with 18650 cells. Some are too wide and some are too long to fit. A cell with built-in USB-C charging is probably too long.

A protected 18650 is recommended. A thin and short button top protected 18650 should fit. The E7 appears to have low voltage protection built in.

I'd be careful not to insert a cell backwards. Reverse polarity protection apparently work now? It didn't on some early samples that I reviewed and I burnt the driver by putting an unprotected flat top Samsung 30Q 18650 in backwards to see if RPP works.

      • I ordered one a couple of days ago. Got the head strap next day, but need to wait for torch itself till next week as only 6500k was available next day here in WA but I wanted to see what the 5000k was like.

What did you think of the two temps when you tested them?

Was tossing up whether to get the sensor and/or extension tube. Will be using as a head torch mostly and extension tube makes it all a bit lopsided. Sensor might be useful but not sure if really need it.

        • I rate the 5000k but will be interested to see what your thoughts are and a comparison pick perhaps. I don't have a 6500k E7 to compare mine to but next to my bike light it is distinctly less yellow and while it's something I probably wouldn't have complained or picked up on without the comparison, I'd definitely say I prefer it.

          • @Castcore: Finally received, I'm pretty happy with the 5000k though don't have their 6500k to compare against either.

I do like the temp comparing to my other main headtorch, the Nitecore HC90 which is cooler but I wouldn't say 6500k, maybe around 6000k. Doesn't actually specify temp anywhere, but not as cool as say my cheapo Boruit (which is actually decent for the 9 bucks or so I paid for it..) coincidentally has the IR wave on/off but I never liked it because its at the front and any time you used it would get a blast of reflected light in your eyes :D Sensor on the side makes much more sense.

Really my only complaint so far is that would have liked the headstrap to have one more click on the downward angle. I can probably file one or two more in there myself looking at it though.

Give it a better go once it gets dark out…

        • I prefer 5000K or warmer when using a headlamp indoors for DIY. 6500K seems OK for outdoor use. It's a personal preference.

The sensor came in handy when I wanted to avoid transferring copper dust from my hand onto the headlamp.

The extension tube definitely makes the headlamp a bit heavier.

Got mine last week. Interesting form factor. Unfortunately I'll need to exchange mine as USB-C charging seems to be DOA.

    • +1

Did you peel off the clear plastic projector on the battery?

      • +1

Yes I did. The light actually works, and I can charge the batt manually in an external charger. It's just the USB-C charging that isn't cooperating. Have tried at least 6 different chargers and probably just as many cables, without luck.

        • +4

Not sure about this model, but some of my lights only support charging from a USB-A charger to USB-C, and not from USB-C to USB-C. Could this be the issue?

          • +2

@akaakmdm: Tried that as well. Unfortunately didn't make any difference. Thanks for the suggestion though.

All good - I'll just exchange it this week.

I bought this last week when the Wuben X0 was listed. I love it honestly. I got 18650 extension and considering the head strap mount because it goes pretty hard.

5000k version is my pick, I wanted one of the coloured ones but they're all 6500k. Side by side with my bike torch I can tell 5000k is certainly less blue but it's by no means yellow, which for me is a good thing, it just feels white.

With the 18350 cell it's very compact and is an easy EDC go to, it's shape makes it more versatile imo. Definitely worth it even without the extension if you are okay with topping up it's charge a bit more frequently.

Couple things I wish it could do:
    1. A lower brightness strobe mode. Currently it strobes at 1000lm which is impractically bright for any situation that I actually want to use strobe. Unfortunate.
    2. A moonlight mode, but this is certainly not necessary.

    • What applications would you need a low strobe if you don't mind me asking?

      • Visibility where I want people to see me but don't want blind / stun them, tied in with longer battery life for such an application. I'm thinking along the lines of bike/helmet light either facing outwards to drivers or facing on me to illuminate my upper body (where I don't want to blind myself or drivers pulling up next to me). Extend this to other applications like walking/running or being on the water.

      • Getting attention of workers at a distance that I couldn't be bothered walking over to

  • +1

How long does the battery last on 400lm?

    • Would also like to know

    • Looks like it's just over an hour at 400lm, and 4 and half hours on medium (150lm). Not great but it's a pretty small cell.

    • +4

I measured 320 lumens for 1 hour 20 minutes with the E7 on High using the included 18350 cell. My DIY lumen tube can be slightly inaccurate when reviewing torches.

I measured 320 lumens for 3 hours 15 minutes on High when using an 18650 with a 3000mAh capacity.

The output is pretty stable and well regulated.

  • +4

    So it's a 400lm light with a 1 min marketing gimmick. Gotcha.

Also the 18350 cell is a weird choice - it's shorter but also doesn't last very long at high brightness (which is the main selling point). And if you pay extra for the 18650 mod, there are better value torches that have higher sustained brightness.

That said, it's still decent value for 400lm in this form factor.

  • Can anyone recommend a decent keyring size led for my car and house keys? I've got heaps of torches, but most are too big to carry with me at all times.

    • +2

I went through a whole bunch but settled on olight i1r due to form factor. Wish it had a magnetic base too other than that been perfect

    • I haven't used it other than to test it, but this one might be suitable for you https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0B36Z89B6

      • +5

I was previously rocking this prior to i1r, it’s a great torch for keyring edc but after a few months of everyday use, the keychain part that connects the ring and the torch body loosens/ wears apart. It came undone a few times but I realised and picked it up. Didn’t want to be checking my key ring on my belt loop a million times a day

        • +1

OK. Thanks for the heads up.

        • +1

That's good to know, my last torch had a similar design and within a week it fell apart!

          • @CODY-19: I did prob get 6 month out of it. The idea of the design is 10/10 so convenient- but yeah not designed for literal everyday use. Torch itself Still works, like I have it in my Ute. But i have a whole bunch of better torches/work lights/head lamps with it too…

    • +1

I haven't found any that I've been happy with to go along with keys. They all bulk up your keys far too much and make them harder to carry. For absolute EDC, go with the light on your phone. You have it with you and you keep it charged. Even micro AAA powered LED lights add enough bulk to your keys to be annoying and they put out a very meager amount of illumination. Even micro 18350s power torches are far too bulky to attach to keys unless you carry an old school jailhouse style key ring of 30+ keys :-). I have a Sofirn Mini SC13 and theOlight I3E EOS - all too big to attach to a standard amount of house/car keys.

      • If you want to go cheap you can try one of these https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/175602692933 . I have one and it's okay. The features all work but the charging port requires a lot of fiddling to make a connection.

      • Microlight keyring LEDs are about as small and neat as you can get. You can get just about any colour, Inc UV. I have a bunch of them that are probably pushing 20 years old now.

    • +4

Check out the Nitecore Tube. I've had one on my keys for years. Small, holds a charge forever and very decent brightness

      https://www.liteshop.com.au/content/nitecore-tube-v2-0-tiny-…

      • I've also got a couple of the Nitecores, picked up from an OzBargain deal a few years back.

Very handy little light and you barely even notice it on your keyring.

      • That's a good one! My only reservation is the micro usb port instead of the usb-c port, so how often do you charge it?

        • Yeah that's my main gripe with it, the micro USB. But it only gets charged a couple of times a year.
I only use it for walking from the car to the house, so only a minute or so at a time occasionally.

      • This is a good suggestion, thank you. Its thinness may make it a real possibility for a useable keyring torch.

    • +1

I've been using a Nitecore Tiki for a few years now. Does what I need from a small (almost) always on me torch. Pretty small, and bright for its size. I generally don't use it for long periods of time though, it's more of a oh crap I need some light right now sort of use case. Otherwise I'd hopefully have access to a full sized torch if I needed something really long lasting or brighter. https://amzn.asia/d/fgn8Ut3

Before that I was using a Nitecore Tini. Which while I liked, I had problems with it turning on in my pocket, hence why I moved on.

And before that I was using one of the original Thrunite Ti models. Which also did the job pretty well, but being a AAA torch was a little bit big for me to carry on my keyring. But I guess if you're okay with something that sized, the Lumintop EDC01 is slightly smaller than the Thrunite and I've been happy with its performance around the house.

      • +2

I still have my (fake) Nitecore Tiki torch I bought from this deal. I found out it was fake when I contacted Nitecore a few months ago to ask about a replacement battery. I don't know if the one you linked is fake, but I'm sure it will work fine.

    • RovyVon A8 or similar

      • Just looked at this, pretty amazing product if a little more expensive than what I was willing to spend. Features wise it pretty much checks all the boxes for me apart from the RRP. The second is Nitecore Tiki for me, good size/weight and for a keyring light checks all the boxes.
