Samsung Q990D Q Series 11.1.4 Channel Soundbar (2024) $1299.98 Delivered @ Costco Online (Membership Required)

330

Have been shopping for a sound bar and decided on the Sammy Q990D with sub and rears. Found this online only deal from Costco, with the added advantage of a 90-day return policy so I can try it out and return it if I change my mind.

I did check with JB Hi-fi and they offered to price match @ $1299, and would be cheaper again by using discount gift cards. Interestingly, Samsung do have a 100-day satisfaction guarantee program running at the moment through JB and other major physical and online retailers, though it has to be done through redemption so seems like a lot more effort: https://www.samsung.com/au/mbg/

    $1287 on good guys commercial

For those have jbhifi gift card, you can ask them to match price then use gift card. I did it few month ago with same price

    • You can try your luck. They may not price match costco as the product isn't available to anyone (you have to be a Costco member to buy).

I refuse to buy this when it was ATL at $1199 start of the year

    • why

      • Because Appliances Online now has it for $100 cheaper

    • -1

So you've never heard this soundbar then.

    • Sounds like a Whirpooler, bro!

    • +3

Ohh yes, why would you wanna spend $1300 for a plug n play system when you can spend at least triple the money and fight for days

      • -1

Wot? Marketplace/gumtree, mate. It's full of good speakers for cheap

If it takes you days to hook it up, that's on you buddy

        • -2

So o can buy any receiver with any speakers and have atmosphere surround, right?
          Ohhhhhh wait…

          • -5

@nikoris: "Any"? Lol who said that, other than you? Now you're just making stuff up to win an internet argument. What you said isn't even rational. It's still on you if you can't look for "atmos" on the specs and follow a diagram and run the auto set up program

May i suggest the Amish lifestyle might suit you better

Imho soundbars are really for when someone doesn't care enough for the best or their partner will never understand why anything better than 1366x768 and tv speakers is required. It's a middle ground. If that's what you want, fine.

You definitely don’t need to spend “triple the money” to get something better than this.

There was a Yamaha full 5.1 pack for $1500 here that would be significantly better than this

        • What model #?
I've got a smallish lounge. Tossing up whether a top end soundbar like this (being smaller) or proper home theatre setup of approx price is better..

          • @garion: Pretty sure it was the NS330 set.

My recommendation always has been if it’s slightly over budget, go used if possible

        • Show me the atmos yamaha that's 'significantly' better than this for movies

          • -3

@nikoris: It doesn’t have atmos, and neither does this - the ‘11 Channels’ is marketing and you can’t create surround by having all the speakers less than 1m from each other

@cille745: Literally all reviews and all users disagree with you.

              • @nikoris: All these five star reviews are on the premise that it’s a sound bar, in comparison to other soundbars

If you look you’ll find plenty of people that have switched to a dedicated 5.1 and are shocked with how much better it is

    • My soundbar has 46 speakers in it. A "bar" isn't just one speaker..

      • Physics mate. A speaker behind you means the sound comes from behind you. 46 speakers in front of you means the sound still projects from in front of you. It may 'bounce' but that simply isn't the same.

  • I got this unit two days ago from JB, I asked if they can price match appliances online deal, but they added $60 on top of that saying appliances online will charge me $60 for delivery. So, it was $1365 at the end and I bought it. Dammn this is a good price. Must say the sound bar is great!! You just need the power cables, no need to plug in to the TV, it’s working through wifi. Great quality !!

You can probably ask JB to refund the difference since you're able to walk into a Costco warehouse and pick it up physically.

Is this soundbar a better option than a multi-speaker 5.1 channels home theatre setup? We’re currently setting up a home theatre system for a room that is 4.5x3.6 size. As beginners in home theatre systems and soundbars, we're doing a lot of research to find the right products within our budget. We plan to install a 100” screen with a 4K projector. Would this soundbar be suitable for our setup? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

If you’re setting up a dedicated home theatre, this is definitely not what you want, really depends on your budget but you’d want a receiver with speakers

    • if you're after a simple budget effective solution and given this is under 1300 you can't go wrong, if you're willing to settle a little. Don't get me wrong, this is an amazing system but does have its shortfalls. For me personally the subwoofer is too small at 8". If you're mainly using it for movies and can settle a little than this will suffice. But for heavy scenes with lots of rumble you will notice the shortfall. Also is noticable in music as well at higher volumes. So in a nutshell, if you're not blasting it above average volume than its fine, otherwise be prepared to settle a little. But don't forget, it is 1300 which is significantly cheaper than a dedicated sub and speakers.

Alternative is the JBL 1300 which has a 10" subwoofer. But usually almost never on sale as cheap as the Samsung!

      • I've got a pretty big standalone Yamaha subwoofer that I've been using for my pc - do you think I could swap it for the subwoofer with this system and use the subwoofer in this system for my pc?

Receiver and speakers is better from a sound point of view but obviously it takes space and you'll want to run cables in your walls. Under the carpet cables you can definitely feel (been there, tried that). You can also get the speakers you want and be confident that in 20 years they'll still work. You'll still be buying receivers every 10 years though (although with 4k possibly being the last disc media maybe this need will stop)

It really comes down to how much you care about having the best and whether you have the space for it. If you don't, get the sound bar.

    • These are less fiddly compared to a proper home theatre system. Having said that, if you're going to the effort of a home theatre room - I'd go with a receiver and separates, look into ceiling-mounted Atmos speakers, and consider getting a professional to calibrate everything.

These are "good enough" for most people, but a "real" speaker setup will always be better.
