I'm not responsible for all of them by the way…

        • +2

Correct, you're not responsible for the occasional helpful ones

    • Not really, if you use your annual $450 QF travel voucher each year.

      • -4

        Many people won't though…

Also, a Qantas Voucher is not the best value when booking travel.

        • +1

Depends on many things; it's sweeping statements that have no value.

          • @chrism238: Qantas Travel have sweeping poor prices…

            • +9

@jv: My anecdotal evidence is that the price I paid using the credit was the same as the cash price available at Qantas or anywhere else.

I know others have had different experiences though.

100K QF (which is $1000 when valuing points at 1c per point) points,

$450 Travel credit which I tend to value at around $225 as clearly you could get the same service for cheaper on jetstar (usually),

              Lounge passes

Means, for me, this is a decent deal.

Not as good as when you got the $200 credit off the annual fee a few years ago but a deal nonetheless.

As an existing discovery cardholder who's been waiting for an upgrade offer for a long time I'm hoping this new deal means that they'll be a bit more generous in offering discovery card holders upgrade deals.

Some notes from my experience. The amex travel portal has rates that are typically on par with what you'd find on a travel aggregation site. However, because you have to use the portal, you cannot use point award flights, it has to be qantas, and it has to total a minimum of $450 you may find it does or doesn't fit your use case. My recent use case was using it to buy a ticket to Tokyo during the qantas sale, which showed up fine in the Amex portal, and I had no problem using the travel credit. If you don't plan on spending $450 a year with Qantas for a non-point awarded flight, don't get the card.

      • I used my $450 travel voucher and got the credit, then Qantas cancelled the flight and Amex travel gave a full refund including the voucher.

Perhaps the strategy here is to find a flight Qantas will cancel? As it’s Qantas it’s not too hard.

        • You got a list? Haha

I mean Jetstar sure… Qantas bit hard

  • +5

Good luck to churners trying to get approved…

      • +9

Your credit rating won't be impacted much by merely opening an account. We're not like the USA.
If you fail to make repayments on time or too many open accounts, then your score gets devalued.

          • +7

@jv: score goes up or down but means nothing. more of a US thing

            • +1

@ozbargainerlife1: that's mostly true. from my understanding US will solely use the credit score to make there decisions.
Here they use your credit score in addition to your length of employment, length of residence, etc…

            • -6

              @ozbargainerlife1:

              but means nothing.

Until you try and get a loan…

              • @jv: absolute horse-crap and you know it.

We aren't the US, JV. Your credit score isn't used as the be all and end all of getting a loan.

Stop spreading mis-information just to get your post count up.

      • +1

my credit rating is "excellent" and I've opened 3 cards last month.

        • -1

The more you open, the lower it gets.

    • Wonder what other card is worth. Can’t find a half decent velocity or qantas card in market with low annual fee and better benefits. Have done ANZ FF Black/ANZ rewards platinum/Virgin Velocity Flyer/NAB rewards platinum/Citi premier so far.

    • +3

Care to share why? I've had this card twice over the past 3-5 years and never had any issues, in fact it's the card I consider the easiest to apply for (among my churning friends too).
ANZ and Citibank on the other hand….

      • +4

I’ve had 5 qantas points earning credit cards within the last 12 months from 5 different banks all with bonus point triggers with minimum spends within a certain period of time. Whenever I apply for Amex it knocks me back because they don’t like credit card churners, they want customers that will hang around for at least 12 months, they see 5 credit cards in my credit check and they knock me back every time I’ve tried

        • No wonder Qantas is claiming an overwhelming demand and not that they don't provide enough free seats.

If the RBA does what Qantas is doing, AUD will on par with JPY.

        • Same. They don’t even ask for payslips or income evidence. Rejected as soon as they do the credit check and it’s not like I have a bad credit history

      • I tried in January (only a couple of churns in 2023) and got instantly rejected from Amex as per many others' experience.

Tried again last month just for a regular card with no sign up bonus and $2k limit, still rejected. Zero card applications since the last Amex one I did in January.

    • +2

      Yeah I stopped trying.

Used to be easy as hell to get the AMEX bonus, did it at least 4-5 times over the years. Servicing it is super easy but I've been rejected 3 times over the last 3 years now - they're not interested in me any more/I am not profitable to them.

    • I got rejected when I applied a while back as I had a few churns in the past year. Annoying thing was, I was hoping to get the Amex card and hold onto it long term, but they never gave me a chance :(

  • damn, just signed up to this with the 90,000 bonus instead of 100k

  • It's 90,000 points untargeted.

    How do I get targeted?

    • Click through to the link OP provided, scroll down to 'Get Started', you'll be redirected to the targeted offer on Amex's website.

  • +1

"This offer is exclusive for the Qantas Frequent Flyer members who received the offer via Direct Mail"

Dont need the card but will they check?

    • Yeah thats my q, not really interested if I don't get the points

  • My income is more than enough, but I get knocked back every time I apply for Amex (roughly once a year). I reckon I've churned them twice 3-5 years ago, but no approval since then.
Do churn other cards though. Any tips or do I just accept a life without Amex? Cheers

    • Have to wait 18months before applying from their T&C

  • +2

Thank you for the offer. Unfortunately, there is a restriction requiring a non membership of at least 18 months to qualify. I contacted them directly to inquire further

They wouldn't even budge one bit : (

But saw this in the T&C, if you applied before 31st July

The 20,000 extra Qantas Points is available to new Qantas Points earning credit or charge cardholders only. Members must not have earned Qantas Points on a Qantas Points earning card into their Qantas Frequent Flyer or Qantas Business Rewards account within the past 12 months from offer registration to be eligible. To be eligible to receive the 20,000 extra Qantas Points, members must a) register between 12.01am (AEST) 1 July and 11.59pm (AEST) 31 July 2024

  • +6

Knocked back last time as a churner (in Feb or March I think), just applied again - no immediate or provisional approval as with most other cards, just same as last time "we'll let you know in 5-10 business days". Suspect I'll be rejected again with no reason given other than "check you credit score" (which is excellent).

    • +5

Yep, and they send you a paper letter to your home address too saying you’re not approved. Ike, just email me your crap news lol

      • +1

Hahaha YES the paper letter was so weird and unnecessary

        • It's designed that way. It's hierarchical customer service. AMEX has the best customer service when you're with them, the more prestigious your card, the better. But when you're not with them and they want to reject you, especially if they've identified you as an unprofitable churner, they will pull shenanigans such as paper letters.

    • +2

Yep, the "we'll let you know" is a rejection coming via snail mail.

They'll ask for payslips, etc. straight away if approved.

      • Haha, I got both. Well let you know, and please upload payslips. From memory this happened last time, then they got the postie to inform me of rejection.

    • +1

Rejection letter received - this one is even more generic than the last but still refers to "credit information" and advises me to check credit agency scores/details. RIP AMEX churning.

      • Thanks for the update. Will save myself and other churners the effort of applying.

    • I also got this but after 2 days I got asked for payslips which I uploaded and the day after I got approved.

  • So non-targeted people aren't eligible for the points? looking to churn my first AMEX

  • I went direct to the Amex site and clicked through to this card and the offer was 100k points, so not really targeted.

    • Good stuff you approved?

    • but did you not see this bit: This offer is exclusive for the Qantas Frequent Flyer members who received the offer via Direct Mail.

    • Looks like they've updated the link

      • Updated so anyone will get the 100k points?

  • I am planning travelling oversea soon, wondering if it is worth to apply for this or qantas platinum which both are having same 100k points offer

  • Have the credit card currently and cannot for the life of me find a hotel for $450 with the "travel credit". One night maybe but two nights is $250-300 dollars more than the hotel price. Pretty annoying

    • +2

The $450 travel credit is for Qantas flights.

You can't use it for Hotels…

      • Well then… I am now informed… And sad

  • +1

I wasnt targeted for this offer. Applied through the link provided. Confirmed with amex that 100k welcome bonus points has been applied.

    • you already got the points? though you need to spend the $3k first

      • +1

I haven’t got the points . Wanted to confirm with them first before activating if the welcome offer is applied to that card or not.

        • nice well done

  • How soon do you get the $450 travel credit?

    • +1

It was there after I was able to log in

      • Perfect. Thanks for the info.

  • -1

If you cancel the card before you use the AMEX travel voucher, is the $450 voucher lost?

  • Has anyone received their 100k points yet that wasn't targeted for this offer?

  • I have a foreign AMEX credit card from when I was living in another country. Does anyone know for sure if I would be eligible for this offer if I’ve never held an Australian AMEX before but still hold the foreign country’s AMEX?? Over the phone the foreign country rep said I would be but curious to hear other peoples’ experiences of this too.

    • It'll be seperate

  • Got rejected with over 1000 credit card score and earning 85K p.a. + bonuses. :(

    1. Anyone knows how to get approved for this card or how long should I wait to re-apply?
    2. Should I apply for other credit cards or not immediately?
    3. Does this affect my credit scoring?

    Please help!!!

    • +1

send me your credit report I'll check it out hahahaha

there's really not enough of your personal info to determine why you got rejected

yes applying for any credit especially close to each other will affect your credit score more than if you were to do it e.g. after a year

      • Hardly ever messed up anything, always payup on time. Always been careful, tracking my rating monthly. All the basic stuff really, nothing extra-ordinary.
Even after this rejection still showing excellent as I did a credit check yesterday.

I am thinking of holding back for applying for another card, waiting for my mortgage broker to respond and see what he suggests. 😇

        • +2

It's usually not your credit score (unless it's really bad) that makes the decision - it's your ability to service the loan.

When the bank asks your salary, and your outgoings, and what other debts you have, they are doing this to decide how much spare cash you have to pay off their card. If that number is lower than X then you get rejected.
Note that they will assume your other loans are maxed out - if you have an empty credit card with a $20K limit then the application process assumes that $20K is maxed out - because tomorrow, it could be.

    • Congrats on the great score. Have you been churning?

      • Did a credit report yeaterday still showing excellent not sure why got rejected.

Never really knew about these deals until lately, thats why I tried the Amex.

Previously used anz rewards to bank points then order e-gift cards ($100-200 ish profit each year) and recently applied ING credit to score $200 cashback and closed it. (Zero fees because I have with them for long).

I was hoping to bank some Qantas points to travel around Australia (like visit friends and family in different states). Unfortunately, not sure I should apply straightaway after this amex rejection.

  • Got the rejection mail today, rejected "based on your credit score" or words to those effects. I can't see my actual score but in Equifax it's "Excellent", so over 853. Last AMEX card was 3 years ago. Lame.

    • Ya it's all BS sometimes

    • Same here - called up to ask about the status of my application and they said it has been rejected, with a generic response of "based on our assessment criteria". This is the first time I've been rejected so yeah, odd but can't do anything about it I suppose.

My first (and last) Amex was also years ago.

  • Echoing all the other comments. Also got rejected with a ~960 Experian credit score.

    They must hate churners.

    • Not just churners. Haven't applied for a credit card for over a year, only have one credit card and still gets rejected. So who knows what their criteria is.

  • +1

Just to provide a contrasting experience to the various people complaining about AMEX rejecting churners, in case anyone is hesitant to apply:

I closed 2 separate credit cards in the last 2 weeks (both churned for cashback and had been open for less than 30 days. Applied via this offer (should also note I was not targeted or received said offer email) and was approved within 48 hours of my application. Also confirmed over the phone when they called to welcome me to AMEX (which was a bit unexpected as they called on a weekend) that the 100k offer applied and not the 70k+30k.

Overall, it was a quick and painless experience. I was definitely expecting to be rejected based on the general sentiment regarding churners and the number of cards I had closed less than a month ago.
