        • For nothing? Or did Qantas provide a service for the $1m? They got me home during COVID.

    • -1

Yeah the bail out then the next years profit being basically the same as the bail out is why Qantas is last on my list of airline choices.

      • Every company that was forced to shutdown parts of their business got bailouts though? And you can't disagree that Qantas with a largely grounded international fleet didn't need it?

Virgin got a bailout, so how are they a better choice? Emirates, Qatar, Singapore, etc are already supported by their governments and yet still got bailouts.

Accounting firms, manufacturing companies, tourism companies, etc all got bailouts to varying degrees.

        • +2

Harvey Norman, Solomon Lew’s Premier Investments, Cochlear, Mirvac, SEEK, Nine Entertainment, Lynas and Blackmores have repaid hundreds of millions of dollars between them in JobKeeper payments after posting profits during and after the continuing pandemic,

          • +2

@frondono: that's only 8 companies out of thousands of companies….and only after public harassment, so they didn't actually do it out of the greatness of their heart.

      • You do realise their income went to $0 within a week and then $billions when everything opened right?

      • +3

Jobkeeper meant practically anybody got a bailout. Therefore you better start adding thousands of businesses to your last list of choices. Including Virgin who also had a bail out.

    • +1

Rex proportionally got more gov hands outs then Qantas.

    • boo hoo hoo i hate them so much even if they do something good it's actually bad

  • Take a leaf from Compass airlines Mk1 and Mk2…

  • +13

Qantas fills up all the morning flight slots at Sydney airport with ghost flights so Rex can't get any slots to provide competition. They even sell tickets to these flights that were never going to depart. Then they cancel those flights, charge passengers more money to switch to another (real) flight.
The minister responsible won't answer questions even after the competition watchdog makes public recommendation to open slots at airport.
    So corrupt.

    • +5

We need laws on cancelling flights, similar to Europe and America. If that makes flights a little more expensive, so be it. Better to spread the cost over everyone than put it on the unlucky people that get screwed by cancellations.

Though, most of the time if they cancel, they put you on a new one free of charge. I bought cheaper tickets to fly from Perth to Sydney on a flight though Adelaide on the way there and Melbourne back. When they cancelled a leg each way, they put me on the direct flight for free that left later and arrived earlier, which cost twice as much when I was booking. I was stoked with the cancellation.

      • +3

That's lucky but sometimes the next available flight isn't until tomorrow or day after that

        • 100% agree, that is why I say we need laws like Europe and America!

    • +1

They don't make you pay for a new flight if it's cancelled. They always put you on another flight for free. The problem is that new flight might not work with your schedule

      • +3

And if it doesn't fit your schedule, you have to pay the fair difference. And given that the new flight is closer to the departure date, the new flight will be more expensive. It's an absolute scam.

        • -3

Scam? Lol please. If it doesn't work for you reject the flight change and get a refund.

          • +2

@Repstar: There's the small mater of still needing to get to your destination, at short notice, so a smaller refund won't help with the much higher cost of booking elsewhere.

            • -2

@robotics: If you think airlines intentionally cancel flights to annoy customers, you would be mistaken. It costs them a lot of money.

This is the exact reason Qantas and Virgin have a higher cancellation rate on SYD MEL sectors. It’s easier to cancel a flight on this sector, than it is to cancel a destination that doesn’t have the same frequency. People view this as “slot hoarding”. They are mistaken.

It’s aviation, cancellations happen. Aircraft break down. Weather happens. If this is something you can’t deal with, please just drive or take the train.

        • And if it doesn't fit your schedule, you have to pay the fair difference

          No you don't.

You might be automatically put on a flight that Qantas chooses (maybe automatically) however you can ask for it to be moved to any day and time even if the ticket costs more than your original one.

  • I've been told that they are only doing this replacement for flights between 31 July and 31 August, i.e. if your departure/flight date is in September onwards - it is not valid. My understanding is that the 31 August timeframe is only the time limit to take up the offer.

Can someone else confirm if they have had the same experience or whether the person on the other side of the phone was unaware?

    • +3

It was the same with Bonza, and they kept extending it.

      • Thank you Repstar!

    • +1

I booked my September Rex flight with them no issues. Also got through in 5mins to call center onshore

  • +6

So many flops in the comment section. Who cares if its marketing or PR. Its free flights. Take it or leave it

    • +2

who cares if your next qantas / jetstar flights became 25% more expensive

      • -3

Has it happened yet? No. Competition exists in any industry. This is just an opportunity for one airline to take advantage of a marketing opportunity, and the consumer gets to benefit.

        • +5

explain to me what benefit do you get for rex going under

          • @HK Refugee: Why do I have to explain anything to you? And who knows? Nothing has happened yet. We are talking about a specific deal here where consumers get to benefit. People like you then love to get political and make assumptions about an industry they know nothing about

Do you really think an industry as competitive as airlines can suddenly have a single carrier charge 25% more for routes and get away with it? Don't you think another carrier will see this pretty quickly and come in and undercut/reinstate that competition?

How about we just worry about what we know for now

            • @bobolo: how hard is it for virgin to agree with whatever price qantas charges and both win?

              • -2

@HK Refugee: Lol…thats not how competition works. Otherwise every airline on the planet can come together and agree to increase fees across every route in the world.

  • +1

Great work. How do I get this deal? Too late to book a Rex?

    • PayID me and I’ll book it for you.

      • +1

Send me your email so PayID can upgrade you to a premium/business account

  • I wonder which airline is the next one to go.

    • -1

      Bonza

  • To slow Qantas, virgin beat you

    • Less free flights they have to give away then. So, not much of a loss?

  • why is Melbourne to Adelaide included but Adelaide to Melbourne is not?

    • Because everyone is moving away from Melbourne?

    • +1

I believe Adelaide to Melbourne is covered, I think they just arent laying out all the routes like that, but lay it out in terms of if its Mel to Adel, it also means Adel to Mel

Not entirely sure but I got Per to Melb flights booked (it shows Melb to Perth as the counted flights)

      Good luck

  • +2

got my flight rebooked to QF pretty easily.
a bit more of wait on the phone line than I'd like, but altogether all was seamless

    • Have you received your e-ticket via email yet?

      • only the itinerary/confirmation
        not the ticket though

        • How long did it take for you to receive the itinerary/confirmation email?

I called yesterday and still waiting, they did say 24 hours but I havent gotten any confirmation or e-ticket, got the booking reference number though so if it passes 24 hours I'll give them another ring to make sure all good

          • @humanpiranha: got the email with itinerary during the phone conversation.
first with some errors in spelling which we were rectified on the spot and 2nd email within minutes after, while still on the call

          • @humanpiranha: Tickets arrived only now.

            • @prezmex: My app says my flight was cancelled. Phoned up, apparently it shows as cancelled as it wasn’t automatically ticketed in time. They have pushed it to ticketing team for a manual review for eligibility for the Rex cancellation.

  • +2

Virgin and Qantas stomp out Rex, then act as saviours…

Even less choice for consumers now

  • +1

Funny how people keep bagging Qantas on cancellations….. but according to BITRE for June 2024:
"Virgin Australia Regional Airlines recorded the highest percentage of cancellations at 7.9 per cent during the month, followed by Skytrans at 5.4 per cent, QantasLink at 3.4 per cent, Qantas at 3.1 per cent, Jetstar at 2.2 per cent, Virgin Australia at 1.7 per cent, Hinterland at 1.5 per cent and Rex Airlines at 1.1 per cent."

    https://www.bitre.gov.au/statistics/aviation/otp_month#:~:te…

    • +1

yep according to that rex is the best and look whos in administration

    • From your quote, Virgin had nearly half the cancellations Qantas had, Rex even less. VARA just does some A320/F100 flights in WA (mainly FIFO).

  • -1

Genuinely curious, why do people fly with Qantas at all? Is it the heritage? If there’s no other option I’d understand, but for something like Syd-Mel Virgin are great.

    • +4

I fly purely because virgin dont service where I fly where as I can fly qantas the whole way on two different flights

means if one is cancelled or delayed and my next one is also qantas, I wont be left high / dry or stranded than if I flew qantas on one and virgin on the next.

I never fly international qantas… always singapore airlines out of australia

      • Same, i haven't looked at the virgin schedule lately, but i do remember even SYD-MEL they don't have as many flights as Qantas.
So for business purposes, Qantas is safer because even if 1 flight is cancelled you'd have another one in 30min… instead of a few hrs.

    • Why fly Virgin then if you can fly cheaper Jetstar?

      • +2

Most things I've read and heard about Jetstar seem to be negative so that put me off them.

        • Virgin have a higher cancellation rate than Jetstar: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15555817/redir

          • +1

@Repstar: That says "Virgin Australia Regional Airlines" has a higher cancellation rate than Jetstar which then has a higher cancellation rate than "Virgin Australia". I've never had a flight cancelled with Virgin from experience.

            • @Ghost47: Ah true. FYI I've flown Qantas two dozen times this year with work and never had a cancellation either.

  • +3

Just tried to call Qantas, they could not retrieve my booking, thus can't verify I have a valid Rex booking, told me to contact Rex.

Rex told me my booking cannot be retrieved cause the flight is cancelled (obviously). Rex told me I have to fill out the Virgin form, they have no agreement with Qantas…

    What a cluster (profanity)

    • Had the same issue, they could not retrieve my booking after I confirmed the reference 10 times with them over the phone. What month were your flights scheduled for? Mine were in November, Sydney to Gold Coast return.

  • Just rebooked, got on a call with them real quick and was a straight forward easy process for me.

Still need to wait 24 hours for confirmation after they validate the cancelled booking was legit then they will email thru the booking.

I called Virgin twice this morning but just got told they cant rebook for flights not within 48 hours

  • Q wouldn't take my booking as it was next year and don't want to take the chance they won't extend etc so submitted the Rex rebook form on V website and crossing my fingers.

  • Qantas cannot find my reference in their system? Who else is experiencing the same issue?

    • +1

Can you access it via the Rex website? If you can't, then they can't. Not like they have access to Rex booking system.

    • +1

One of our family friends is having a similar issue, they booked the flights through Booking.com. Called Qantas and they said the booking couldn’t be found.

No issues rebooking with Qantas for my in laws who booked direct with Rex. Same flight date.

Did you book direct or through third party?

Please let us know if you’re able to find a resolution. Will update you if we find a way.

      • I booked through Rex directly, which makes it even more strange as to why they can't locate my booking.

        It just doesn't make sense

    • +1

Had the same experience, but i booked using Booking.com so that seems to have caused some issue

Can you find your booking here? https://mbe.rex.com.au/

      • +1

So I booked direct through rex, yet it still not showing up on that link, not sure whats going on

  • I saw the writing on the wall for Rex before any of this happened, so I booked a replacement flight on Virgin yesterday arvo for 22AUG. Wonder what the likelihood is that Virgin will refund the money on the replacement flight? Or do I just do a chargeback on my CC for the now nonexistent REX flight?

  • +1

Thanks Qantas, 15 minutes on the phone total and rebooked on an A330 as well. Just waiting on e-ticket to come through.

  • There are more factors at play than just what Qantas did. A few weeks ago, I was looking for a last minute ticket and a Rex business class ticket costed less than Qantas or Virgin in economy with a very similar schedule. So it looks like they’re simply not getting their product out to potential customers. The writing's been on the wall for a while now.

    • they were desperate to fill flights - i was on a couple where there was 4 out of 8 biz seats full and probably about 30 out of 160 ish seats total filled for syd-mel which should have plenty of demand to fill seats

  • -3

What do you reckon the chances are of re-booking through QANTAS / Virgin then contacting bank to get a chargeback on Credit Card for non-existent REX flight? 😂

  • -2

I have had my weekly interstate work flight cancelled the last 3 weeks straight, leaving me stranded all day in a midway city.
Can qantas give me free flights? (hint: no they can't. They actually charge me to change to a less preposterous connection each time they cancel.)

  • -1

Very generous, considering the cause of Rex' demise was likely dirty pool by other airlines.
If these were people instead of companies, there'd be charges for attempted murder or assault.
And as for the Australian Government, aiding and abetting are words that spring to mind.

    • +1

The business world isn't as pretty and flowerily as you think it is.
It's a cut throat world when you get into business. If you don't have the stomach then you will end up being dissapointed.

No business out is innocent / ethical, even if they advertise that they are. They just haven't been caught yet nor have had their dirty laundry aired to the public.

Even being on Ozb i've seen plenty of deals which are unethical or un-fair but we think we are entitled and would flog the company if they don't comply with the deal.

  • +4

Australia is a first-world country offering third-world services. The airline industry is just one example.

  • Curious to know if anyone that booked using Booking.com or similar has managed to get a rebooking with Qantas? seems like it is not possible cause Qantas cannot verify the booking

    • Hey Anon,

I booked with Aunt Betty (flight Centre) I called Qantas originally and they said they cannot find my flight and I need to contact Rex or the travel agent.
I found the online form through Google and got new tickets sent to me in one day.
