G85 seems to be similar to G84 & NanoReviews rating for G84 went up compare to 6+ months ago? : https://nanoreview.net/en/phone-compare/motorola-moto-g85-vs…
Wonder what price Moto-AU will sell G85 in 6 months time & keep an eye on NanoReview current-67-rating ?
Endless-edge shape is the same as CURRENT premium Moto-range: Edge 40 & 50.

      • The G85 only has 128Gb Storage and 8GB RAM according to the JB listing. No headphone jack this time. But it does looks more modern.

Are these made in China? Probably then yes

  • Any G54 deals? Kept on skipping getting and of course none at a good price when you need one

g54 from mobileciti as well AU $247.99

HERE15 code works as well if you add an eligible item to bring you over $250

I'm trying to decide between g84 and g54 at the moment, for the previous $180-ish the g54 is a no brainer but at these prices i'm not sure

      • Bigw has g54 for $224 with a discount code, but I am looking for the previously low prices =)

      • I'm trying to decide between g84 and g54

I have both g84 and g54. I prefer the ergonomics of the g54 where the finger print reader is on the right hand side and doubles up as a power button. G84 finger print reader is under the display and seems slower and less accurate. I came from a POCO X3 Pro which had the same arrangement as the g54.

The pOLED screen on the g84 isn't that much better than the LCD on the g54. The extra RAM on the g84 has not made any difference in real life usage for me (but I'm not a gamer). Both phones can take a microSD card up to 1TB, so the storage difference between the two phones isn't a big deal.

IMHO the g54 is better value and if I had a UNDO button, I'd pass on the g84s I bought recently for $279 and instead buy another g54 when they were $197 at Officeworks.

        • Thanks for that. Does the fingerprint / power button have swipe gesture functionality to go back/home/open apps list?

          • @OZKap: I haven't investigated that functionality, but the Motorola customisation app allows you to assign various functions to gestures. You can double tap the back of the phone to get the above functionality.

            • @peteru: I was always a big fan of Motorola's gestures. Thanks for your help, might have to pick up a g54

        • I decided to compare another thing between g54 and g84. Google Maps pinch to zoom performance. The g54 wins hands down, giving nice smooth zooming and panning as expected. The g84 fails in a big way, with choppy screen updates. If you use the pinch gesture for any longer than about a second Google Maps stops responding to it.

This problem was reported to Motorola back in 2023 and still isn't fixed. I've had the g84 for less than a week, but this fault is giving me enough grief to contemplate returning the phone.

          • @peteru: For me i found My g54 wasn't able to keep a stable 5G connection, it'd constantly drop back to 4G sometimes but most H+, the G84 in the exact same spot and setup held the 5G connection for a week straight no issues. at that point i just returned my g54

so really depends what you need out of the phone.

      • I also have both and had the opposite experience to @peteru.

I found the G84 a much better device overall. For reference i have the S23U and I bought the phones for my parents. $154 G54 and $250 used G84. I did play around with them both for a day to set things up.

They feel the same ergonomically. With my eyes closed, can't tell the difference between the devices. I got the vegan leather back for both, and both feel equally as premium. The fingerprint sensor is in a different location as Peter mentioned, so thats down to preference. The G84 sensor was fast enough for everyday use and felt about as responsive as my S23U one. The G54 is capacitative so is generally more accurate and more forgiving for dry, dirty, and wet fingers.

The displays are a stark difference. The OLED on the 84 is obviously more punchy and has infinite contrast. But noticeably brighter. You can see the 84 in direct sunlight, I could barely see the 54 outside. The 84 is more than 2-3 times the brightness.

I personally found the 84 smoother, the 54 seemed to drop more frames on the playstore, in the camera, and in heavier apps in my experience. I think it might be more to do with the extra RAM, but I'm not sure. I believe the 695 in the 84 has a better GPU, but they have comparable CPU performance. Both phones were generally smooth overall, and I was quite surprised coming from the S23U. The 54 also did get warmer while installing apps, while the 84 stayed quite cool.

Camera on the 84 is hands down better. They're both stuck with 1080p 60fps recording max though, which is disappointing.

Battery was about the same. Although the 84 outlasts the 54 when using dark mode on everything. They're both generally about 8-10 hours screen time in my use.

Personally, if the 84 isn't that much more expensive than the 54, I would get the 84. Being able to see the screen while driving for navigation is a deal breaker for me. Everything else is generally similar. The 84 felt the closer to a flagship than the 54. Do note the G85 is out now, so look into that as well. The redmi note 13 pro can be had for similar price too as an alternative.

        Hope that's useful

Gee, Motorola must have stock so many G84 and G54, hoping to sell a lot to 3G shutdown impacted users. We got non stop deals on them almost twice a week at least

    • They are going up in price

      • G54: but OzBargainers are sharing creative way to get discount voucher to get this phone for $39, lol : https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/859683

OP-comments: 'I couldn't live with paying more for the G54 than those who bought in July so I decided to pay more money to buy the Samsung A35 for $129 instead lol. OzBargain logic!'

  • From what I can tell, the screen is much better on G84, but performance wise they'd probably be similar? Different processors but still seems like they perform similarly?

    • I had high hopes for the (on paper) better screen on the g84, but it's wasted money. 10-bit pOLED doesn't matter on the g84 because it can't do HDR.

Ordered from Big W. They cancelled next day.
Found different colour, same model, but can't use promo now.
Also stuck with $269.10 gift card, when they refund me.

    • +4

Sometimes when we play the discount game, we lose.

    • +1

The refunded GC should be WISH GC so you can use it @ Woolworths, BigW, BWS…

  • Good phone but issue getting notifications on various apps.

    • Have you tried turning off adaptive battery?

      • Yes as I chose 120hz refreshed rate instead of variable. Checked all the sertings but still doen't show up. Only appears when I open the respective app. Anyways I already returned it to them.

  • Hi guys. Quick question re the Motorola. I am coming from the Samsung ecosystem. Is the Moto Secure Folder similar to the Samsung Secure Folder ie I can two of the same apps installed? Thanks

    • I haven't used Samsung secure before, however I successfully installed another copy of Woolworths rewards app using the Moto Secure folder just now.

You should install a second copy of chrome as some of the apps use that to authenticate etc.

  • Can any one tell me if wifi calling works on boost/telstra?

For some reason my redmi note 10 pro wifi calling doesnt work on telstra but did with amaysim when i changed over. Now back on boost and not working again 😭

    • Wifi calling works on Boost. Using it on my iphone.

  • how long this phone will receive android updates?

  • I am confused between this VS Samsung A55 5g. Which one is better?

    • The A55 is better in every way.

  • Expired now? Price is much higher.
