Jetstar to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam Return: SYD $333 (Direct), MEL $355 (D), BNE $527, ADL $534, GC $547, PER $578 & More @ BTF

810

Vietnam is the new hot destination for Aussies, it seems, and there are some great prices to be had on Jetstar, especially between August and November, and April to June next year. I've given some examples below. Note that the Sydney flights are direct, while others may require connections. Also on some dates, other airlines are cheaper - they'll show in the search when you click through.

VietJet are often much better value from PER.

Stated in text above that some airlines may show up for less, if cheaper on that day. YOu can also filter by airline/direct.

But if I didn't include Perth prices, I'd get "What about Perth??" comments :/

      • +11

Why the neg? Jetstar does not operate from Perth to Vietnam at all? Meaning that you have to go via MEL/SYD, and therefore the pricing goes through the roof.

You are harming BTF over some bs self inflicted comment of living over in bloody whoop whoop.

          Appropriate uses of negative vote

          Cheaper price elsewhere
Ideally, mention store, URL and price include shipping (if applicable).

@frondono: Kmart sells sneakers cheaper. Must neg every branded sneaker deal 🤷🏻‍♂️

Xiaomi sells cheaper phones, must neg every Apple / Samsung phone deal 🤷🏻‍♂️

You'll find Vietjet is not the same product as Jetstar.

I should neg one of your previous deals on pizzas because you can buy Dr Oetker pizzas from woollies for $5 each. Same same? Not same.

            • @dangerdanger: For people from Perth this is far from a deal. 60% more to fly with a worse airline with a stop over and a lot worse flying times. When Vietjet fly direct are rated better and fly at decent times.

              • @frondono: Good argument, but still not a good reason to neg. Dr Oetker pizzas 45%cheaper than your pizza deal. Should I neg your pizza deal?

You still haven't given an alternative cheaper Jetstar deal.

I do however note you or someone else has retracted your neg vote, so many the idea has finally sunk in

Return to Ho Chi Minh City is cheaper than return to Perth from Sydney

    • It should always be this way.

  • +2

Just wait for a Singapore air sale. Way more comfortable.

    • Not direct though and not as cheap.

      • Seems only Sydney direct and price is comparable on sale.

        • Sydney and Melbourne.

Price on sale on Singapore Air not less than $400 return sorry.

          • +1

@cv05: Same price for me in Perth and Jetstar sucks.

            • @furiousgeorge: You should have mentioned the Perth bit in your op. Most of us live over on the eastern seaboard.

I've flown to VN five times on Jetstar out of Sydney and have mostly paid about $300 return. Not had one single problem with them.

Not sure why you're pushing Singapore Air, this Jetstar deal isn't even close to being the same thing for most of us.

              • -5

@cv05: I’m pushing nothing champ. If you want to sit on a Jetstar junker for all them hours to save a few bucks , then you fill your boots.

                • @furiousgeorge: Its really not that bad on the B788. 31" of legroom is the same what you will find on Qatar Airways 787 and A330s, with actual IFE and a decent enough service.

The seat that JQ uses on its B788s are the same as Air Canada on 16 hour flights… but you get more legroom by 1" with JQ

    • The discomfort and expense of transfers and longer overall flight duration outweighs any benefit of 1 cm extra legroom…

HCM is okay for a day or two. Get a good ca phe trung. Unfortunately the banh mi thit is nothing to write home about. Weather is hot af, Use it as an entry point and head elsewhere

    • Agree. HCMC doesn't have a lot going for it. If you can fly Vietnam Air you can get a connecting flight up to Danang same day. Otherwise if Jetstar a late night lay over near the airport and an early flight out is a good option.

      • +4

oh definitely visit the war memorial in hcmc if youre there too

        • Agree but watch out for the coconut man lol.

          • @furiousgeorge: Is he the guy who pretty much sells rip off prices? He has a mate who fixes shoes too. He's real scummy.

            • @end0rphine: He likes to get newbies with his expensive coconuts. Yeh his shoe mate is a pain and has to be shoo’d away. No pun intended.

            • @end0rphine: he gives you a coconut, saying it's free. then follows you and begs

    • +2

I agree as well. Saigon doesn’t have much to offer for tourists that can’t be done in a day. If you get a cheap deal then I’d recommend getting a Vietjet flight to Hanoi ( then Lan Ha Bay instead of Ha Long and Nhin Binh which is Ha Long but on land.

    • +10

I would disagree, HCMC is vibrant and full of interesting places and things to do. It might be that I’m more adventurous than most but it’s easily one of my favourite Asian cities. I found Hanoi grimy and dark and boring in comparison.

Here’s some of the things I find enjoyable:

      • specialty coffee scene (%ARABICA @Apartment Cafes building is exquisite)
      • play Da Cau in the park with the locals
      • sit in 23rd September Park and talk English with the school kids that want to practise
      • HCM Museum is beautiful and informative (I find the war museum too saddening now after going twice and being so enamoured with VN)
      • pastry / bakery touring
      • find a Buddhist temple and make an offering
      • enjoy some small bars for live music
      • chill in one of the big parks and relax with a drink
      • flower market
      • street food in said markets
      • free city tour with Hotpot (excellent)
      • Get on bumble and go on a date with a cute local
      • etc

I write this not to convert anti-HCMC people but to encourage anyone passing through to get out and explore and enjoy. It’s very safe, cheap and the people are friendly and open. I can suggest a street food tour by moped if anyone is keen, it was one of the best things I did on my last trip and I’m not even a foodie.

      • There's also an amazing craft beer scene over there which I discovered recently, so I recommend doing a lap of the HCM Ale Trail: https://www.hochiminhaletrail.com/

There isn't a bad one in the lot, but East West Brewing was a particular standout.

      • +1

Great post. Reckon many are selling HCMC short, perhaps haven't gotten the chance to get to know it well enough

        • -1

Drink alcohol, pray and date or go to a cafe or be a creepy foreigner talking to kids rofl

    • Getting cà phê trứng in HCMC is a very touristy thing to do!

Mind you, so is getting one in HN where it comes from. A good novelty though, arising out of privation.

Independence Palace in HCMC is worth it, then perhaps walk across the park and get some cà phê bệt on the street.

    • -1

Sweet…. More empty seats for me 🤭

  • I guess (being new) as a family with small kids we’re (profanity) coz can only fly during Dec Xmas / Jan period and it’s peak so 2 adults and 2 kids will be easily 4k or more to anywhere in Asia 😢

    • Rookie. You've got to try booking 12 months in advance. Surprise! Still no deals.

    • +1

You have to book 9-12 months in advance and be on the lookout for sales.

We managed to book a return trip to Singapore on Singapore Airlines back in March for our Xmas break(3 weeks) for $1k per adult(25kg baggage + seat) and $700 for a 2 year old. This was cheaper than other budget airlines. Friend of mine managed to score similar prices for Penang(transit through Singapore).

      • +1

Oh wow didn’t know that. I’ve done trips already in March and June (oldest going to kindy next year) so yeah missus wanted to see if we could do something in Xmas and I’m like how we gonna get anything cheap then

So thank you for the tip, I’ll still look out for deals this year but at least for next year Xmas I’ll look out 9-12 months out 👍

      • +1

Nah. We’ve been Looking at flights to Vietnam the past few months for school holidays after term 1 next year and prices have been consistent. No sales, not ever cheap. These peak times are built into the airline price models. We’re just about to bite the bullet. Limited with flights as most go at crap times for kids.

  • +2

Apparently neg voting on Ozbargin is equivalent tonot giving way to a pedestrian on a crossing. Anyways, flights are usually, if not, that far from posted price FYI

  • What are people's experiences with VietJet?
Also how does it compare to JetStar?

    • +6

VietJet flight attendants have gone out of their way to offer me unsold extra leg room seats for free.

Never got so much as a free pretzel from Jetstar.

    • I’ve seen discussion here in the past about them. Try looking them up. Sounds like their customer service is non existent if something goes wrong.

    • They are not bad they seem to be not popular on my flight there i had the entire row to myself.

    • Flew two legs with them last month and another two in February. Clean planes, staff range from businesslike to lovely, in-flight food offerings aren’t too expensive, seats are basic but good enough, leg room is probably fine for an average height person but I struggle being taller. Departed mostly on time. I got upgraded to exit row / leg room+ just by asking nicely, saved my ass on the red-eye ex SGN so I could at least stick my leg into the aisle. The only negative is that they don’t let you take your own water onto the plane ex-SGN for some reason, I just stuff my bottle under some stuff bottom of my carry on and say I don’t have any. Pretty lame to deny people water.

Overall one of the best LCCs around, I might pounce on this deal and go back for some more fun.

      • The only negative is that they don’t let you take your own water onto the plane ex-SGN for some reason

This would be because Australian regulations don't allow liquids through security.

        • On landing? I’m talking SGN > AU. I was surprised as I’ve never come across it ex-Asia before.

  • Um Don’t Australians need a visa to goto Vietnam?

    • +2

Apply then. It takes 4 days to get or one day with a visa agent

    • -2

Yes, and it's a big part of the reason why I won't bother going back (better holidays can be had in Malaysia, Thailand and surrounds).

      • What’s the issue with getting a visa?

I assume it’s like USA equivalent when travelling theee, it’s just then trying to rort people money for coming into country. I think Bali does this too?

      • +1

Over 40 bucks and a 5 min online application?

        • Yep, when Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia (for direct flights into Bali) don't require it and Vietnam doesn't require it for UK citizens, what's the justification for Vietnam to make us cop it?

          • @xyron: Can't answer the justification for it but I feel like it's easily the cheapest of all the countries to fly to and also arguably the cheapest once you're there. I'm ok paying $40 for that. Each to their own though.

          • +3

@xyron: Probably the fact that Australia charges Vietnamese $195 for a 600 visa (tourist). That’s more than half the average monthly wage. It’s actually shit that some countries don’t charge us when we extort them just to come visit.

Indonesia does charge a visa fee.

Reciprocal revenge fees are a thing.

            • @zfind: Even paying the $195 600 visa fee the majority get knocked back anyway as thr government thinks they're going to hide here and not return. I can't even get any family or friends over so i have to keep flying over there if we want to catch up. Ridiculous!

              • @Xconcepx2020: Personally I feel it’s discriminatory. Just put adequate controls in place and treat people equally regardless of nationality.

          • +1

@xyron: There is now a $50 tourist visa for Bali which makes Vietnam cheaper out of the two.

          • @xyron:

what's the justification for Vietnam to make us cop it?

Maybe due to Viet Nam war.

  • Is $494 return SYD - SNG via Scoot a good price?

    • If direct that’s nod bad I think

      • +1

Yup direct. Booked my fam of 3 for around $1400.

  • Does anyone know VN immigration website to apply for visa? Google search brings so many website and most of them look like travel agents.

    • +1

Look for the one that ends with .gov.vn

      • +1

Not true always. Check this website and its disclaimer.

        https://vietnamvisa.govt.vn/
Disclaimers: vietnamvisa.govt.vn is e-commercial/non-government website. We provide visa approval letter service which is officially approved by Immigration Department.

        • +4

that one ends with govt.vn (has a t)

        • ^https://.*.govt.vn$ != ^https://.*.gov.vn$

    • +4
      • Yep this is the official website. Don't worry about the fact it's offline right now, the site just needs a break. Their webserver seems to be an old OptiPlex in a closet somewhere, which inspires confidence for how they handle PII.

        Gotta love Viet Nam.

  • +1

It's time for visa waiver for Aussie. Vietnamese Government been waiving visa for UK and european countries.

    • Australia needs to stop charging other countries so much to visit Aus. This is the number one reason other countries don’t waive Visas for us.

      • Agree, aside from the fact that it’s more than a bit unfair to charge citizens of less-developed countries just to come here.

      • You wish! They even charge their own citizen $400 bucks for curl up passport

  • is a $2000 enough for a, say 5 day trip in Vietnam all up ? (RT ticket, accomm, food etc)

    • +1

Depends on your standards. Most of SE Asia can be done extremely cheaply if you can live like a local. $50/night for a budget hotel and $20/day for food is definitely doable.

    • +2

Last Nov I spent 9 days in and around HCMC and the total money spent was $1,800 incl. everything. Stayed in decent hotels, did mekong delta tour and ate cheap local food.
