Japan is a great place to go if you haven’t already. So many options when using their bullet trains.

    • +11

my only advice is not doing during their summer unless you really like the hot. I heard it gets pretty hot during their summer so people try to avoid going during that time lol

which is so weird coz during their winter, yes it gets cold as they get snow depending on the area but yeah come summer then its bloody hot lol

      • +1

        What about October?

        • +1

Probably one of the best time as it is start of the Maple season. Prepare to see a lot of tourists and inflated accommodation price though, which seem to be throughout the year now anyway.

          • @sauxliu: yeah especially with the higher aud to yen atm too and any other country as they are getting value for their money against yen

i expect at some point the yen will get stronger but regardless alot of people. you really have to plan your itinerary when going to japan.

if you plan on going to the 3 big cities ( tokyo, osaka, kyoto ) recommend trying any touristy spots very early in the day and I guess if going in summer then it should be bright early in the morning too else if you go any other areas then i dont think it would be full crazy - there will be tourists but hopefully not that busy

            • @prankster: Aud to yen has already dropped significantly

        • Early October is still warm and coming out of rainy season. Late October is fantastic.

      • Qlders will be used to it. Southerners might have some trouble

        • +5

I personally disagree at least for SE QLD.

Currently live in Brisbane and have for >12 years; went in August 2023 and to Hokkaido (so intentionally tried to get away from where it would be really hot). Unbearable heat, would constantly be sweaty. Luckily we rented a car so would jump into the AC.

After returning discovered 2023 was the hottest summer on record; a quick Google says 2024 broke that record again.

Never again. Very unpleasant even for QLDer.

          • @madpig83: hectic global warning if its going up every year and crazy how even Hokkaido was hot during August :(

so happy that area gets good snow during winter still

          • +1

@madpig83: I'm constantly sweaty when outside in Brisbane's heat too. The only difference is being in AC all the time at work, gym and home. Travelling usually means lots of walking outside and being out all day, not having the convenience of home or the office to freshen up. If you move north, you'll find that Brisbane is nothing in comparison

          • @madpig83: Oh wow, that's actually nuts. I was thinking of taking the old girl to Japan but might wait for a sale for late Sep-Oct

      • +5

Lived there for 15 years. I NEVER go back in their Summer and nobody listens to me when I tell them it's not a good idea, and yet they come back and tell me they'll never do it again lol.

The sale is great, but you're going to go over when it's nearly 40C, humid as (profanity) (Seriously worse than Singapore or Malaysia), and if you're in the cities it's an absolute hellzone.

      • -5

Incredible insight, hot during summer and cold during winter. Who would have thought?

        • +2

I don't think there is anywhere in Australia that experiences the radical shifts from snowing to 40C depending on the season, so it is reasonable to point out

    • It's a great place to go even if you have already, too. I've just got back from my 6th trip there.

  • +1

oh how i wish it was these prices during dec/jan peak holiday period lol

    • +1

Prices are still decent during January if you fly Royal Brunei 🇧🇳 or Philippines Air 🇵🇭 I think.

      • +18

have a family then you'll understand

        Thx captain douche

        • -3

          😿 😢 😭 awww

Edit: hope that day comes for you and your fam. I mean it

    • wasn't too bad for September/October holidays via Cathay

    • -1

Yeah, in same shoes. Want a direct flight to Tokyo during Xmas. After seeing the flights n hotels price, decided to go to Tassie lol

  • @OP.

Any deals for perth to NZ ? During july to sep ?

    Thanks

  • +6

Check the alternatives before booking QF. Some ANA/JAL flights are $100 more than QF and are definitely better.

    • +1

Yeah I'd agree with this, if you live in Sydney/Melbourne. ANA are awesome.

However, this is a great price Canberra, and I assume some of the smaller state capitals, too.

      • Oh well. Sydney makes up for it with exorbitant living expenses in other areas.

  • +3

Is the weather a bit hot/sticky during June/July?

    • +4

Yes it is. I will avoid July and August most regions except for hokkaido areas.

      • +2

Have to disagree re Hokkaido, at least for August. See my comment above. Very hot and unpleasant.

  • Cheapest Dates!

  • +2

These dates are low season and Japan gets quite hot already (unless you are going to Tohoku or Hokkaido). In this case you could have look at ANA who will provide a free stopover. ANA also has generous baggage allowance as well.

  • +5

Summer dates - no thanks. Lived there, and have never returned back in the Summer. Best time to travel for me is Late Oct - Mid May. Can probably stretch that into early June before it gets super warm, but the humidity there is what gets you and will really ruin your trip. It's worse than Singapore, Malaysia or Indonesia IMO.

Still giving a + though because there will likely be those that don't mind it and direct flights are always great.

    • Wow. I thought Singapore in particular was okay to get used to but still not great. To be even worse than that yet not near the tropics… guessing its the heat island effect.

      • A combination of the heat island effect in the major cities, but also tsuyu - The summer monsoon season which just floods the country with moisture both on the ground and in the air and there's no relief. I would literally peel my clothes off me every day.

    • wow even more worse than singapore/malaysia/indonesia is hectic!

i go to indonesia coz of wifey and her family but i hate it anytime i go to jakarta coz of the weather lol

      • "coz of the weather" combined with pollution.

        • south east countries sadly

    • I was in Japan last year for late Oct and early November. Great weather as a tourist: sunny, not too warm, spent most days in shorts and a t-shirt. Towards the end of my trip it was getting a little cold and spent the days/nights in pants and a jacket.

  • +5

Recently flew Qantas Tokyo to Sydney and best economy experience I have had in a long time. The 2-4-2 seating arrangement is perfect if you're flying as a couple.

  • +2

Burn your ass off during these months haha. Stay hydrated people

  • I did May to early June last year and it was starting to get hot towards the end of the trip. Any later and the summer is very unpleasant. The first time I visited was in July and did not expect to sweat so badly.

  • +1

Is this when hotels are cheapest? I don't mind the heat.

    • +1

dont think its cheap anymore unless you do capsule hotels or find a place further out from a city?

    • No such thing in japan

      • This isn't true. I just stayed at several hotels where the cost was about $40-60 per night.

        • +1

Agree with Orion there are lots of cheap accommodation in major cities in Japan. But don't expect it to be convenient and near touristy entertainment districts. You can find very cheap hotels in Tokyo near a subway station but it won't mean it will be convenient as you may need to spend 30mins+ changing multiple lines to just to get to most tourist + entertainment areas.

Also these rooms will be the size of a shoebox. 10sqm and enough for a bed and that's it.

But definately very doable on a small budget.

There are also advantages of staying a bit further away from the typical touristy areas. Your get to experience what day to day living is like for locals.

          • @r33tom: Largely true. There's still bargains to be had if you're diligent though. I just stayed in Ikebukuro, 5 min walk from the station, in a single room, for $70 AUD a night. It wasn't the Hilton, but it was fine. Clean, warm, room to move around.

  • Are these deals restricted to the date window in the table above?? Can’t be changed?

    • yeah you can change the dates to see what comes up

  • +2

Tip: Avoid June and July , thanks.

    • It's nice if you travel up to Sapporo though

  • Hoping for some deals for late Nov!

  • +1

Btw there are better dates outside this range for similar price with Qantas. For example Sydney to Haneda 28/4/25 - 12/5/25 $948 return

  • +1

Anyone hired a rental car in Japan, looking to book a vehicle and doing a road trip.

Looking for recommendations on car hire companies.

    • +1

Yep I've done it a few times. Toyota car rentals are the best as your almost guarantee to get a near new car with less than 20k kms. Only downside is your choice of cars are limited as they only rent out Toyota's.

It is also the most popular car rental company and cars quickly get booked out in popular tourist cities. So you really have to plan months ahead.

I have also used times car rental. Their cars are older and have more kms but they are still well maintained. You also get a bigger choice of cars. They are less popular due to the older car fleet but if you can't get a rental from Toyota I would use this company.

Make sure to get the full insurance coverage for an extra $15 a day. Worth the peace of mind of paying $0 excess for any accidents.

Apply for your international driver's licence online at least a month before your trip. Otherwise if in NSW you can get it in person at service NSW branch but expect a 1 hr wait.

The roads are really easy to drive on. The only painful part is finding parking even small cities you have to pay for parking and with very limited spots. Need to really plan ahead and make sure your hotel has parking or there is walkable public parking nearby.

So worth getting a car to explore the smaller cities and countryside that most tourist don't go or difficult to reach with public transport. It's also way cheaper than using the bullet trains to get around the country.

    • Just hired through tocoo, which is an agent that then booked with Orix. It worked out to be the cheapest option. Nice cars etc.

Driving is so nice in Japan. I had more road rage directed at me on my first drive back to work in 20 mins than I did in 10 days of driving in Japan. It's actually relaxing.

    • Went with Toyota Rent a Car when I was in Japan in February, no major complaints. Was a reasonably straight forward process, we hired a Corolla for a couple of days to do a roadtrip from Tokyo out to the Fuji Motorsports Museum and back. Their speed limits are kind of bonkers though (like 50km/h on what would be like 80+ roads out here) and we didn't want to push our luck being foreigners, but everybody speeds over there. I got very used to being overtaken by just about everything and just staying out of people's way where I could.

We also tried to hire a car in Nagano (early Feb) and there was zero availability whatsoever, but public transport options worked out okay and honestly the conditions were pretty sketchy for driving regardless.

Just make sure to have your International Driver's Permit sorted in advance and you shouldn't have any problems.

      • Haha so true about the speed limits. Literally the locals just use it as a guide and they all drive like at least 30kms above any marked speed signs.

I remember on some highways with speed marked at 80km/h and the locals were all driving 110km+.

I just sat on the left most lane while I watched everyone speed past.

There is not many police cars but I have seen the odd one pulling someone over, not sure if it's for speeding though.

    • Yes, recommend for Toyota rent a car. Ensure you have insurance cover with your rental in case you get into accident which can happen especially in the major city with horrendous traffic & crazy cyclists.

      • The parking is probably the most challenging as the spots are tiny even if you got a small car like a Yaris it sometimes feel like it's a struggle to squeeze into the spot without hitting something.

So a very high chance your put a few scratches on the bumpers if you are not good at parking.

        • Yes make sure you eyeball the spot before you turn in. Especially the ones that raise the metal stopper after you park

  • +2

    Come on November deals!

  • -1

Just a heads up for those complaining about reward availability….You can often have better luck closer to the date, say from a week to 8 weeks out for example. they tend to release more seats closer to, on flights that haven't been sold to cash customers. I was just looking for a specific Saturday near the end of May that I couldn't get only a couple of weeks ago out of Haneda and its available now when checking today. Ive also had random availability for a US domestic flight last year become available, then disappear then become available again etc a week or two later.

  • +2

I havn't flied international with QF since COVID.
I had some points sitting there so I decide to give them an opportunity.
So I fly with them to Japan last month and I would never do that again.

First there was mechanic issue and the flight is delayed for 5 hours.
All I've received is just a $15 meal voucher. $15 can't even buy a Hungry Jack meal in Melbourne Airport.
They then ask everyone get onboard and made us waited for 40 mins inside, so they can fly as soon as the "paperwork is done."

Narita has a curfew at 11pm, no flight can be landed after that.
QF managed to land my flight at around 10:45pm.
Sounds great? No! After clearing custom and collecting baggage,
It was already 11:40pm and there was no public transport except taxi/uber, which costs around $400-$500 to Tokyo at midnight.
The last train leaves at around 11pm and the last bus leaves at around 11:30pm.
I had to wait until 5am for the first train and by the time I reach my hotel, it's already 7am.
There is no compensation from QF, no transport arrangement, no hotel, no cash.
No wonder why QF is so desperate to reach Narita before 11pm so they don't have to pay a cent for compensation.

In contrast, I flied ANA from Sapporo to Tokyo a week later.
Ticket price was around $100. It was the last flight of the day and it was delayed.
ANA admitted that they are responsible for it. (which means it's not caused by bad weather, traffic control etc.)
By the time I reached Haneda, there was no trains.
ANA pays up to $150 cash compensation for my taxi fee or hotel fee, at my choice.
That is the kind of customer service we needed in Australia.

    • One of the many ways QF screw their passengers. Cheaper to screw you (and fellow passengers) than to reschedule the flight to the next day.

      1. Overcrowded lounge
      2. Inferior food (yes, in business too)
      3. Non existent customer service (not the employees fault)
      4. Often cost more on monopoly/duopoly routes
      5. Ever inflating status (gold/platinum status count) and points.

The only thing going for with QF is safety and some of the best pilots in the industry globally. The major Asian carriers such as CX, JAL, ANA and SQ the like are also up there. So, not much of an advantage.

      • Yep spot on about the pilots. As a anxious flyer I found the less profient pilots tend to always have poor landings and sends my anxiety through the roof. Throw in some cross winds….

Never experience any hair raising landings when flying with Qantas.

        • Got relatives and friends served/serving QF, CX, SQ and EK. Very experienced and been in the game for many years.

  • Does business class ever go on sale?

    • Not often. Particular alot of the QF ones are shareholder/tax payer funded.

  • +1

    Load up on Pocari Sweat

  • Nice, even comes with free typhoon too

    • Is it that time of the year?

  • Does anyone know if they have a seasonal sale for September? I couldnt find anything. Or is this cheapest time of year? I went last June / July and too hot for out door activities.

  • Great prices. I'm trying to find a better deal just to Queenstown NZ and back in late June and I can't find anything cheaper than $1,200. It's so much closer than Japan. My flights must be funding the Japan ones!
