Tasmania needs more tourism. They've been having a decline in population growth for a long time now, propped up only by overseas migrants finding work there since it's classified as rural. This is a good thing - and Tasmania is one of, if not the best state for exploring the great outdoors.

I absolutely loved Tassie when I went. The natural beauty!

      • +4

Same. In my opinion, it's a perfect state to travel to when you want a feeling of going 'overseas' whilst still having the comforts of not needing to deal with customs, different currencies, network carrier signal, language barriers etc.

It really felt like a different country the times I went; old pubs, pretty different weather coming from Queensland, great outdoors that you can't experience anywhere else.

        • Do they have a Krispy Kreme down there yet? Was bloody hilarious seeing everyone taking 2-3 boxes on their flights haha.

          • +1

@neo: We don't have Krispy Kreme stores but it's sold at some BP service stations.

            Maybe one day…

            • @SnowDragon: Where would you say is the best to live overall? Hobart or Launceston side?

              • +2

@neo: From the eyes of a tourist, I much prefer Hobart. A local may say otherwise!

              • +2

@neo: I'm never lived in Launnie so couldn't tell you. But there's a bit of an unspoken rivalry between the two. Especially when it comes to beer (Cascade vs Boags)

              • @neo: Hobart is a bigger city, with more "city" things, if you're into that. It's also more expensive, more crowded, worse traffic and colder. That being said, it's really beautiful.

Launceston is more variable (in terms of all the above), but I would personally pick it because it's more accessible for mountain biking, rock climbing and kayaking, which are my things.

Other factors - Good surf is closer to Hobart. Derby is close to Launceston. Maydena is close to Hobart. Good coffee for both.

As you can see, my important factors probably don't match up with other people!

Overall, I would say that Hobart is a nicer city, but colder, and not quite as good for outdoors stuff.

            @neo: Needs a Costco!

what is the best time to visit Tasmania ?

    • -3

      ChatGPT says:

The best time to visit Tasmania depends on what you want to experience:

      1. Summer (December – February) → Best for Warm Weather & Outdoor Activities
        • Ideal for road trips, beach visits, and outdoor adventures.
        • Best time for hiking in Freycinet National Park, Cradle Mountain, and Bruny Island.
        • Peak tourist season, so book accommodation early.

      2. Autumn (March – May) → Best for Scenic Beauty & Fewer Crowds
        • The landscapes turn into stunning red, orange, and yellow hues.
        • Cooler temperatures but still great for hiking and exploring.
        • Fewer tourists, making it a more relaxed experience.

      3. Winter (June – August) → Best for Snow & Wildlife
        • Great for experiencing snowfall in Cradle Mountain and Mount Field.
        • Good chance of seeing the Southern Lights (Aurora Australis).
        • Fewer crowds and lower accommodation prices.

      4. Spring (September – November) → Best for Wildflowers & Wildlife
        • Blooming gardens and national parks with wildflowers.
        • Best time for seeing baby animals, including Tasmanian devils and wombats.
        • Mild weather, but can be unpredictable with occasional rain.

      • +4

Ahaha, so basically ChatGPT says they're all good times.

Personally I would recommend Winter and Spring. You can get warm weather anywhere in Australia. Winter in Tasmania is unique in the sense that there is snowfall and a winter that you won't get anywhere else in the country. It feels more like a country in Europe with cold, rain and chilling winds.

The melbourne sale period is exactly over the school term.

    • It’s almost like they aren’t trying to discount tickets they would sell anyway over vacation periods!

  • Always wanna visit TAS but don't get a chance.

Just done with WA last Christmas.

  • never been to TAS but would love to one day. How long is the flight from SYD ? thnx

    • 2 hour flight from Sydney.

If you were to visit I suggest hiring a car.

      • Easier to fly there.

    • +5

Each to their own. Happy for people to keep thinking this. Makes it cheaper and easier for those who appreciate it. Life isn’t all about cities - tassie is for those who like nature.

    • +2

      Objectively not for you then.

    • You're right, but…..

Best things for Tassie are outdoorsy things. Go for a bushwalk or bike ride or visit a beach, etc.

Yes, if you want to go shopping or things like that it's going to be a bit sub-par.

  • Thinking of going in early August for my birthday. Would love to see some snow - is snowfall likely around the first week of August in Launceston (out towards Mole Creek/Deloraine)?

    • Pretty good chance. However, because of the shape of the hills, you're likely to have snow on the mountains, but not actually on the ground down at Mole Creek or anywhere around there. Probably have to drive up onto the plateau to pick up some snow, which has its own issues driving on those roads if you're not used to it!

We visited Hobart for the first time in January this year. We stayed 4 nights. We has an absolute blast.
Salamanca is one of the best streets out for a nice walk, beer, cool buildings etc. The Markets were fantastic (probably the best in Australia). The fish and chips on the wharf, chocolate shop, hop/on hop off bus tour. Mt Wellington was excellent and the Cascade Brewery was marvellous. Probably my favourite mini getaway I've ever had if I'm honest!
