  • You can get 8 ports 2.5g for $119 on eBay with an actual brand product
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/186277748766

      But this has 10gb/s uplink.

  • +4

Title needs to be fixed to 2 x 10G SFP+ ports. SFP maxes out at 1gb/s

    • to be fair the actual Amazon listing has 2 x 10G SFP, OP just copying directly.

    • Cheers, fixed

  • +3

well its about time 2.5gb switches went down.

    • -1

Too late, 2.5G gears is still too expensive when 10G gear is becoming the start point, more options and cheaper.
I used to dream with a 2.5G home network, no anymore. 10G will be cheaper and last you decades on the long run.

      • I still use gigabit on my network :D

      • 10G is the start point? Surely you jest.
Not cheap. Not close to cheap. Not for a long time.

      • 10G gear is becoming the start point

        It's absolutely not.

Only a microscopic fraction of a percent of devices come with 10GbE onboard.

  • good price.
2 years ago i bought one such thing, the cheapest one i can found on the internet for 175. Now it is lower than half of that time.

    • How has it held up over the years?

      • still working. a 5 port 2.5 one

  • +2

Prev comment got removed because I put an AliExpress link in it, but yeah these are like $40-50 there

    • Yep they are a bit cheaper but they're pretty ugly though and dont even pretend to have a brand. At least these are a known quantity with reviews on STH and you have amazons return policy to fall back on

      • fwiw these seem to be the exact one I bought for $45 in a black shell instead of a blue one. There seems to be a lot of different brand names using the same innards but yeah, hard to trust these things without seeing the guts.

I say there's no such thing as an ugly switch, they all have their own unique beauty (apart from some of the plastic nightmares from the early 2000s)

  • +3

If you can wait for delivery, these switches are cheaper on aliexpress (they're all the same inside).

    e.g. 4x2.5gbe + 2x10gbe https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006820869547.html for approx $46 delivered.

    • +3

I bought that exact one one, plus a $14 10Gbe DAC cable from the same company, to connect to my RT-AX89X router. Works perfectly.

Any 2.5gb switches with POE+ for a reasonable price?

    • I’ve been eyeing this thing for ages, https://www.mwave.com.au/product/tplink-tlsg3428xppm2-jetstr…

      Price doesn’t budge.

    • I wanted exactly this with an SFP+ port and web managed, got it here:

      https://aliexpress.com/item/1005007219251113.html

It's been excellent - AU$156.65 ex gst. The management pages are the same stock Realtek demo pages like other switches tested by ServeTheHome.com.

      • +1

That actually looks pretty decent! Does it get super hot and how is the web interface?

        • +1

Yeah, it's been excellent. I have three of the STH cheap Chinese 2.5Gb switches, two with POE, all web-managed, and all with at least one SFP+ port.

The interface on all these switches appears to be the same—the only customizations done are changing the logo in the top left corner (and the pages reflecting the features of the switch, obviously).

Here's a rundown of the web interface: https://youtu.be/YdgrHda4sW0?si=oKME9oZ8c152Nu_s&t=647k. It's basic but functional. Reports say it's the demo code Realtek provides for a web management interface for their chips (unaltered except for the logos).

My switches are Hasivo or Horaco branded, but as any of the STH videos on the many differently branded switches prove, you can generally pick whatever is cheapest. Firmware updates are available for both these brands though, and they both have large switch offerings, so I think they'll be around for a while.

Lastly, the smaller POE switches come with a suitably beefy external power supply (the 8 Port has an inbuilt one), and I have been using them. However, the non-POE switches come with the lightest power supply I've ever held. I know this doesn't automatically mean it's rubbish, but to be safe, I've replaced it with a quality power supply (they're 12V) and thrown the other one away. YMMV.

Edit: Neither POE switch gets hot - they are barely above room temp. Both have 2 POE devices on them, one a Unifi U7Pro AP, which is POE+. Not what I'd call a heavy load, but I think they'll fare well. Check the PSU wattage to make sure they'll drive all your POE gear if you're loading them up.

Maybe it's just me but I'd be paranoid AF about buying a non-mainstream brand and/or from Aliexpress a device such as this. I'd rather roll the dice and be backdoored by a big company that's bowing to the USA/FiveEyes than a guaranteed penetration by CCP.

    • +7

I'm not sure about the guaranteed penetration part…. Theoretically possible maybe but hardly guaranteed.

It is just a switch - all external traffic still needs to go through your router and routers firewall

    • +1

Ignorance is a bliss they say

  • I assume this doesn't act as a modem? I'm currently looking for a modem, because I think there's a problem with my dodo one. Any good value modems that would do 50/20 (actually it's 17) a good job?

    • This is not a modem/router. This is a 2.5G ethernet switch that gives you extra ethernet ports.

      1. What's the problem with the Dodo modem?
      2. How much do you want to spend?

      Check your address here and tell me the nbn technology used in your connection. For example;

nbn® Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) has been used in your connection to the nbn network.

      • +1

i think it might be fixed. They got me to change a setting on the modem.

      • +1

nbn® Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) has been used in your connection to the nbn network.

        • +3

All you need for FTTP is the nbn fibre box and a router. If you want a new one don't search for a modem. Look for a wireless router or mesh Wi-Fi router 2-pack or 3-pack bundle.

          • +1

            @Twix: Thanks

          • @Twix: You don't even need a router. Can plug a PC directly into the NBN Connection box.

            • @Bruceflix: You can however that is meant to be for diagnosing router speed problems. The average Aussie household has 22 connected clients so most users do need a router.
