What do you mean by optional thunderbolt does this laptop has it or not?

    • Usually an option depending on how the company ordering wanted.

Other half had a 5300 without thunderbolt.

I'd suggest looking at the 7300 or 7390 which of the 3 refurbs I have ordered all come with thunderbolt.

      • how much roughly i have to budget for 7300 7390 ?

        • I got a 7300 with 8gb ram, 256gb ssd for $250 is the lowest I think I have gotten. $10 for another 8gb of ram (it has 2 slots like this one. 7390 only has 1 slot)

16GB RAM Version is $259 Delivered
wow this probably worth as investment seeing the price is going up

    • Agreed although only slight difference is that one was 70% battery.

  • +1

The i7 only has 65% battery, is it worth buying and then changing the battery later?

    • +2

A more degraded battery usually means the machine has been used a lot more too, so probably not. The i7 is still only a quad core.

    • +3

i5 is also quad core with hyperthreading. If you look at CPU benchmarks there is little benefit in getting the i7

  • guys, will it be a good htpc to watch 4k on tv ?

  • Thunderbolt or no Thunderbolt. I would happily order 2 but it can tell whether it has thunderbolt or not. Ambiguous listing.

    • Is that what allows it to connect to a docking station?

    • Hi it's not thunderbolt but it got DisplayPort Alt Mode.

      • It says optional but no option to add it when purchasing?

        • +1

Sorry no, it was a copypaste from the dell spec sheet. It was optional before you purchase with dell.

@MetroCom: Oh how do I get a refund then? I emailed sales yesterday but no reply.

            • @bobwokeup: Hi mate just processed the refund for you.

              • -2

@MetroCom: You guys need to do better, so many mistakes have been made these last couple of days…

              • -3

@MetroCom: Ummmm Sales just got back to me saying it will work with a docking station so Thunderbolt isn’t needed. Why would you cancel the order and not even email me?

                • @bobwokeup: Sorry mate was looking at one of your previous message thought you want a refund.

                  • @MetroCom: All good, I did if it can’t connect to my docking station. So my order is still active?

                    • @bobwokeup: Sorry it has been cancelled and refund already. Could you please reorder if it still does the job for you?

                      • -3

@MetroCom: Yep maybe next time email the customer confirming they want the refund. For all you know you cancelled the wrong one as I gave you no details on here, except that I emailed sales.

  • Is 16GB version 2*8GB?
    Fingerprint reader?
    Backlit keyboard?

    • +2

      Hi 16GB is 2 x 8GB.
      Fingerprint reader: No
      Backlit keyboard: Yes

  • +1

@Metrocom Lots of questions in here.

  • @MetroCom please confirm if postage for warranty issues ae covered by Metrocom. Last time this was for sale you did say yes, but now I see this (website):

Please note that return postage costs are borne by the buyer, and shipping fees are non-refundable.

    • +1

Hi if it's for warranty then it's covered by Metrocom. For change of mind then it will be at buyer's end.

      • Ta. Makes sense.

  • @MetroCom Could you let me know the battery size in these laptops? The Dell site says the 5300 has either 42Wh or 60Wh. Thanks!

    • Great question. @MetroCom? I am interested in 16Gb model.

    • +3

      Hi it's 60Wh

      • +1

        Thank you, bought one!

        • What one?

          • @boxall: Just the 8GB one for now, might add an extra 8GB later if I need it, though.

            • +2

@Senator Mendoza: I ordered the 16GB one. For $20 extra I thought worth it.

              • +2

@boxall: My 16GB one arrived today, and it’s in immaculate condition—no scratches or signs of use whatsoever. Perhaps it was just used as a desktop or not used much at all. The battery has 91% health. I hope you get about the same.

                • @zappy32: Everything is crossed. Like it so far?

  • Can these be charged by USB C?

  • would this computer be optimal for studies? also what is the batttery health

    • As above 80% plus.

  • -1

Good price, but 8gb and 250 ssd is a real pain. I can't do even Internet browsing on this. And old ssds were not really reliable. And this particular model has noisy and not well performing fan.

    • Oh great that’s all I need it for and have already ordered. Surely they have a cooling off period so I’ll test it out and see how it goes. Not that it would make much difference, but I got the 16GB one!

      • 16Gb for me makes a real difference. For instance, one tab in Chrome with Youtube.com without advertise takes 2GB RAM.

        • Okay sweet good to know thanks.

          • -1

@bobwokeup: I would be concerned during summer heatwaves. I don't think you can use such device when it's +45 around. It may work, but sounding like Boing and on half of performance with periodic shutdowns when Windows run anything heavier than txt.

            • @Ozzster: Yeah fair enough. I’ve got a work laptop so this one is only for when I don’t have my work laptop with me. Would have been nice if I could use it to stream Netflix movies when away but that doesn’t sound possible at all. *Edit even not streamed if I download them before but not liking my chances.

              • +1

@bobwokeup: No issues with Netflix or any streaming service. Why do you think that wouldn’t work?

                • @boxall: Thanks, just from reading the comments from Ozzster.

                  • +1

@bobwokeup: Just a bit of FUD. This is a perfect little office machine. I still run a 12 year old gen 3 i7 with 8Gb and it even streams Netflix!

              • -1

@bobwokeup: Netflix usually gives reduced quality, which is easier to run from hardware perspective. But if it will be encoded in HEVC that will need some cpu power, and here we go with all the issues mentioned above. But don't worry if this is just FullHD.

                • @Ozzster: Cool yeah most we watch are FullHD. As long as it’s not blurry I’m happy haha

                  • -1

@bobwokeup: On its own screen anything will be fine. But if you want to attach an external 4k display you'll need to be more careful with the content. For example, GoPro videos that you made yourself in top quality will be freezing. Netflix also may upgrade to that level eventually. This happened with youtube, which was running fine on Pentium 4 until their change of codec. Netflix already has AV1 codec streaming, don't expect it working well on this device. Or, they will reduce quality up to the blurry level to make it working.

                    • @Ozzster: Damn okay thanks and if I downloaded first, would that be better?

                      • +2

@bobwokeup: Ignore. It will be fine. This is not a super old chip.

                        • @boxall: It's just 6 generations (years) old.

If you want to download the videos your bottleneck will be the 250gb ssd, which can take roughly Windows itself and 4 average Blue Ray disks/movies.

                          • +1

@Ozzster: Absolute rubbish. Who wants to download a blue ray movie these days?

                            • -1

@boxall: Those who want the original quality, not reduced for faster streaming, not blured for slow networks and devices.

                              • +1

@Ozzster: And you think people store these movies on a laptop? Come on. Try a NAS with many TB of storage.

                                • @boxall: That's exactly the case for a small laptop designed to be portable, isn't it?

1.5kg laptop and 5kg nas, great stuff to travel with lol

                                • +1

@boxall: When we go travelling that’s the only time we download movies and then just delete them when we get home.

                            • +3

                              @boxall:

Who wants to download a blue ray movie these days?

                              You wouldn't download a car.

    • 512GB MicroSD and life is great!

  • What sort of battery life would you expect from this laptop? I'm interested in it as a school laptop and wondering if 80%+ battery condition on this would get it through a school day. Cheers.

    • Based on a short amount of use, my 91% battery will give you about 4-5 hours.

  • Any cheaper laptops?
Need one for my kid in year 5 to do her work on it (and to get off bloody messenger kids on tablet lol)

    • I haven’t looked but I don’t think you’ll get anything cheaper, that will be half decent.

  • +1

Pulled the pin and ordered the 16gb version.

Paid extra $10 for express. Let's see how quickly it arrives.

  • +1

Got my mine, not that lucky, have quite a few scratch marks at the top and couple around keyboard, charger was dirty too but battery seems good though not showing any cycle counts.

    • That’s no good. Me personally I don’t mind scratches as it’s just for home use but battery is important for me, how do I check the cycle counts?

      • I'm the same.

Although I've checked battery replacement prices and they range from $60 to about $100

If I got decent enough battery life for 6 months and had to purchase a new battery I wouldn't mind too much.

        • Agreed although you’d hope it lasts at least a year or two!!!

    • I'll update you with how mine is when I get it.

A few scratches and marks is acceptable to me.

Btw, are these convertible? As in you can flip the keyboard all the way over turning it in to tab mode?

      • +1

I assumed its convertible at purchase but later came to know there are two variant of it but still can go down to 180 degree.

    • May I ask how long after ordering until you received tracking information?

      • i got it within 24 hours

        • Thanks. I ended up getting it yesterday evening. So very acceptable.

          • @XXRydeR: Condition?

            • @boxall: Sorry my bad, I was referring to getting the tracking info.

I'll be sure to update on condition once I receive the actual laptop lol.

  • I bought 2 in one order.
But I was only sent one in the shipment.
Metrocom did resolve it relatively quickly though

    • I'm glad they sorted things quickly, that's the kind of support we want.

  • +1

Mine arrived (16GB). Excellent condition (will confirm battery health soon). Setting up windows now…first time it did say there was an error, so fingers crossed.

A very solid feeling quality machine. Facial login was a surprise feature when a new Acer I had for a short while didn't support it.

    • Using BatteryInfoView - Battery health 91.6%. No cycles, so must have always been plugged in which is weird.

  • One last thing. Go to the Latitude 5300 support site and download the latest Dell drivers. It finds LOTs including BIOS etc.

    • There are so many, how do we know which ones need downloading? I’ve owned a Mac for years so never had to do things like this.

      • I always go with the manufacturer's recommendation. When you get Mac updates it comes from the manufacturer as well.

        I like an updated computer.

  • And for those into retro gaming, this emulates up to and including the Dreamcast perfectly. Haven't tried PS2 as yet.
