Stainless Steel Case
Water Resistance 100m
Anti-reflective coating glass

I do not own any Orients because I've never seen one that I really liked, so I don't know much about them. This looks pretty premium, with a very nice finish and milled clasp. Good size. I really like the dial and indices despite the romans at 12 and 6. I dig the blue hands. It's dressy yet kinda sporty. I didn't buying anything sigificant suring the prime sales. I'm seriously considering this because it looks better than any Presage under $500, and better specced, even though there isn't much info on the movement and idk why "EPSON" is on the caseback.

Limited time deal. 3% claimed.

EDIT: I found this info from the blue dial one:

Drive type: Mechanical (hand wind + self-winding)
Accuracy: +25 seconds to -15 seconds per day
Operation time: 50 hours or more (with power reserve indicator)

So that explains the subdial. The pr and accuracy seem decent. I'm gonna cop.

I believe EPSON is the parent company of Orient watches.

I like everything about this watch except the random Roman numerals.

    • Yeah I've never liked watches that have a random combo of numerals and lines. Just pick one and see it through. (also, make sure it's lines)

    • +4

Normally romans are an instant hard-pass for me but it's not really noticable on the white dial and it mostly works with the overall design. I wouldn't get the blue dial, that's a hard-pass.

I've noticed we have very similar tastes with watches.

    • +7

there's a version similar to this without roman numerals, but they might nor make it anymore

you're right: Orient is owned by Seiko Epson Corp. So they have the same parent company as Seiko, but they're operated independently and Orient is not considered a sub-brand of Seiko

Orient Star however is a sub-brand of Orient. It's more upscale, like what Grand Seiko is to Seiko

      • That makes sense. Cheers

    • Watches made by a semiconductor company… I guess that is a plus

      • Better that one made by a train conductor company for sure.

        • Ouch… BALL-ers.

  • Looks kinda cool
plus can tell everyone its JDM AF

    • -1

You mean the JDM Seikos sold in Autralia with Asutralian warranty aren't "JDM"?

      • Isn’t it different in the way this RK-AU0006S isn’t available through an Australian reseller though?

        • +9

I'm saying the Japanese Domestic Market Seikos sold by Australian ADs are not really JDM, but labelled as JDM. Just like the new Seiko 5s should not be labelled as SKX (proper ISO divers), or the ugly SARB replacements should not be labelled as SARBs. It's just little things that annoy me.

This is my latest JDM Lineage: https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/446913/114348/lineage.… It was an impulse purchase because it was only $100USD, and didn't even check the specs. The links are hollow, but it came witha little plastic tool that just pops out the links. Easiest bracelet adjustment ever. It has multi band 6 and tough solar, but I think it's mineral crystal, unlike my other titanium/ss, sapphire Lineages. I got it because it has a more agressisive dial than other Lineages. Not bad for the price, but you can pay about about $50-100USD more for titanium and sapphire, but more boring designs

          my other ones: https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/446913/113471/lineage.…

            @rosebank: 100 usd well spent

          • @rosebank: Yo im digging the looks of this casio. Can you please tell me where you got them from?

            • @beoluch: eBay. Most of the time I wait for the JAPAN15 deals to get 15% off japanese stuff, but this time I was like whatever

The one on my wrist is lightweight (because hollow links) and I'm pretty sure it isn't sapphire. It sort of rattles around on my wrist and doesn't feel as well made as my other Lineages. But it does have the coolest dial. and the seller jacked the price to ~$110USD

Are you happy with that? I can recommend similar models with better specs for maybe $150USD

  • +2

It has too much going on the dial for me. Looks premium but I'd prefer my white mako40 https://www.amazon.com.au/Automatic-Mechanical-Domestic-Manu… than this one.

    • +1

That's nice, but i have a few white dial divers already. I've been looking at this one: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B08DKPL7G8

      • Yes, that Kano looks really nice if you can sport a 44mm case watch… I have small wrist so I have went for a smaller case mako instead :)

        • +1

I have watches ranging from 36-45mm, so it should be fine

    • That looks cool. Especially with the SS bezel.

      • Yes, I am in love with it lol, still honeymoon phase lol

    • Beware of the misaligned minute markers known to Mako40, which should be corrected by now in the newer batches.

      • I received mine and it has been corrected (sadly), I'd love to get the misaligned one for its novelty/collectible value.

  • +1

    This is extremely tempting.

I'm a huge fan of orient watches (have 5 of them).

All the YouTube reviews online really rate this watch and it's normally around $650-700AUD.

    GS on a budget vibes.

    • I got GS vibes when i first saw it as well.

  • I was getting an itchy trigger finger to buy a new watch recently, but have averted it by buying a yellow Fullmosa leather strap for my SNKL23J1. It looks so fresh.

    • I was never a huge fan of the old 5s but at least they had a lot of interesting designs. The new 5s are basically the SKX looking one that's not a proper diver, a field watch, and one that kinda looks like yours. And that's it.

      • Yeah, it seems that Seiko is much more interested in selling $1000 watches at the moment, and has stopped trying with the 5 series. But at its best, the 5 series was what Orient is now: clean and interesting watches with in-house movements at prices accessible to all.

Or the new mini Samurais at close to 1k RRP with a 4R and hardlex. I said I'd never pay more than $800 for a watch with a 6R, but ended up buying a 6MAS and Willard on sale for just over 1K. I think I've only bought 1 Seiko in the past 6 months. I think they've run out of ideas, all the prospex and presages designs have been stagnant. All their new "premium" models are overpriced reissues of old models with the new "Automatic 3 Days" which is hilarious because a the old 6R has a 71hr pr

  • I've been wanting an Orient Star watch for some time now, after buying an Orient Sun & Moon some time ago (people have assumed that the Sun & Moon was far more expensive than it actually was). Still haven't found a good price for an Orient Star that I'm keen on; ended up buying a Bambino just the other day.

Still… your post has triggered my curiosity to search a bit more :)

  • Why does it say 50m in one part of the post and 100m in a second part of the post? That looks poor on their behalf if they are trying to be a serious maker of watches.

    • I dunno, but it says 10bar on the casebcak

      • Yeah seen that. 100m it is I guess.

  • I have a standard orient chronograph (panda). It's my first orient and I'm very happy with it.

I've been told orient to orient star is similar to Seiko to Grand Seiko etc.

    Very tempted

  • Quite a nice watch, for the money. I like it!

  • It could be a good daily watch, I'm looking for a comparable mechanical Seiko watch, keep looking I guess.

    • I'm looking for a comparable mechanical Seiko watch

why a Seiko instead of this?

      • TBH I have nerver heard about Orient.

        • +1

Orient are owned by Seiko Epson.
They are usually better value than Seiko, at this price range.

A Seiko in the same price range as this will likely have a movement with looser accuracy and a mineral crystal (rather than the sapphire in this).

If you like the look of this watch, I would recommend jumping on it instead of looking for a sub-$500 Seiko. The latter will not be as good.

          • @O15: I am looking for a daily's, this can work.
My friend is going to Japan in a few days I will ask him to compare, both a Seiko watch and this one.

    • Try SZSB011 - the so called mini sarb

  • Through researching this watch, found they also released a similar limited edition version. $3K with a limited run of 360 pieces worldwide of each colour.

    • Looks like GS Snowflake, which I already own

    • Amazing how manufacturers can do a different texture on a dial, call it a limited edition, and triple the price

      • +1

Never buy a limited edition :)

        • Why not?

          • @O15: Core mechanics and functionality often remain the same, with cosmetic changes and triple the price.
I am guessing they are appealing to collectors.

      • Yep - it's a shame. At least we don't see too many of them (compared to say the sneaker market).

I really liked the look of the Seiko/Lark collab that they released last year but $900 for a presage is a bit of a joke.

  • +1

Ended up pulling the pin and grabbing one.

Anyone got any recommendations on places to buy watch straps from? Looking for something similar to this.

  • It's no RN-SP0002S, but still very lovely

  • +2

    Fantastic value with superior finish
It's like the Lexus of watches
    Bought!

  • +2

This gives off dressy vibes but also looks rather versatile… Thanks @rosebank

  • How does the EPSON in-house movement compare to ETA 2842?

    • +2

Did a quick google. This EPSON movement has 50hr PR and hacking I think.

ETA has 38hr PR, no hacking, but maybe better accuracy. cbf finding the actual specs and there are 4 grades of the ETA anyway. But if we're going with lowest grade, i think the accuracy would about the similar.

I didn't end up buying this. Showed it to my friend and he said, "you have a Sping Drive Snowflake, with pr indicator, blue hand, titanium and better dial." He said I'm just buying a cheaper version of somthing I already have.

So this $450 will go to my next purchase, most likely a citizen 8

      • I don't like short PR. That's why I prefer solar power watch or at least quartz watch. I don't have JDM yet, maybe next time.

How do you manage your watch collection? Especially with short PR

        • The Eco-Drives, Solar Seikos, G-shocks etc are in boxes close to a light source. My autos are all over the place, and have various PRs. I rarely wear my autos, but when i do, I try to wear it for a few days, maybe a week. So even a 38hr PR on the lower end doesn't really matter to me. I'm going to buy a HAQ next

  • Anyone who got this can give a review? Is it actually sapphire?
