      • +4

That will never catch on. Passing fad at best.

      • +3

I heard Computers are stuck in a blue screen of death loop.

      • +2

The internet? That thing still around?

      • Damn, what will Turnbull think of next??

        • Too late. Al Gore beat him to the punch.

  • +27

Do they have a Betamax version?

    • Still remember our sony betamax.

      • +2

Our local video store had a VHS section and a Betamax section.

As a kid, all the good stuff was on Betamax. We were a VHS family. I was sad.

        • can't have been that way for long, before the lower quality but cheaper VHS took front seat.

  • You know its 2024 right?

    • +19

      ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

    • +7

year of the blue screen of death

    • Some of us still have working VHS players, even if we no longer use them.

        • Plot twist, someone taped over it with the Simpsons

  • +3

Wow who still using VCR, no judgment really but its so interesting to know there are some people out there still using VCR :)

    • +8

Some people still have home videos on vcr. It's easy enough to convert them but old people be sentimental.

      • +1

Whatโ€™s the easy way to convert them?

Take to some shop and they convert it onto dvd?
Sorry Iโ€™m being old, convert it and put to a usb I meant ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

        • 25 years ago I bought this stuff from the adult store and huffed it out of a brown paper bag.

    • +4

Some people still have a stash of porno videos on VCR from the 90's

      • +3

        Not on 'fillum'?

    • +2

I got big full LooneyTunes Bumper Collection and Tom and Jerry Bumper Collection.

    • Ours just sits under the DVD player.

    • I was cleaning up today and came across an old one. Has my first skyjump on it, so yeah, Iโ€™d like to know how to play it! Wonder if the tape will break

      • Has my first skyjump on it

I've got one of those too

    • +8

My Mum is still recording and watching on a VCR. She's 94 and years ago I tried to get her to use a PVR instead, but she couldn't understand how to use it no matter how many times I tried to show her. Just 3 weeks ago I had to replace that VCR with another I'd kept as a spare.

  • +5

These things are really bad for the machine. If you know what you are doing use these
    https://allfixelectrical.com.au/products/75mm-angled-chamoisโ€ฆ

Use an IPA cleaner or worst case metho

    • +3

Don't use metho, use IPA. You can get 5 for 25 bucks delivered, there's no excuse if you care enough about you old machine.

Was going to say a cotton bud and some IPA and it will be better than this tape and take no room in your house. If you are using a VCR in 2024 you should be comfortable taking the top off and cleaning the head manually

      • +3

My Dad was an electronics technician in the 80s. That's how they did it.

Take the top off, use Isopropyl Alcohol, gently wipe with a cotton bud or soaked cardboard, and it's done in a few minutes at next to no cost.

This was a mainstay of his business - along with waving a degaussing wand over TVs.

        • Oh-wow! I remember that setting on our old monitor!

  • +4

Cottonbud and iso alcohol is the ozbargain way.

    • +8

Big no, no. I used to repair VCRs in an electronics shop after I left high school and we used IPA soaked card (like from a birthday card or manilla folder) and hold it against the drum. Removed the dirt without damaging the heads.

Q-tips are fine for rollers, etc.

      • +5

What did you use for the head? I never had any adverse effects, although I had crappy tapes that were recorded over many times. I used tdk sa90 and ar90 when i could afford them. So nice opening the cellophane on a 5 pak of ar90's ๐Ÿ˜…

        • +1

The advice relates to heads mounted inside a split spinning drum, not a stationery one like a compact cassette head, which has a smooth surface. A video head is exposed between the two halves of the drum and can catch on the q-tip, collect wool or in the worst case, become damaged.

To clean the exposed metallic slither, a soaked card works as it evenly cleans the fine edge with no risk. A q-tip doesn't really do the job half as well even if you are careful.

      • +5

We used betting tickets … which were essentially the same kind of card back in the day (oh geez back in the day already!)

      • +1

what % was the ipa? 70% or 90%

  • +5

Will wait for the LaserDisc cleaner

  • +18

Under Seige cake scene always was had VCR lines from the rental store. Will this fix it? :)

    • +11

That scene made many boys into men. ๐ŸŽ‚

      • +1

Or 'flesh and blood'. Jennifer Jason Leigh.

    • +1

You are lucky it is only scene. Debbie does Dallas has multiple scenes

      • +2

        Porkys ๐Ÿ˜‚

    • Lol

  • +14

My head is reeling from this deal.

    • Reeling reel to reel.

    • It wants the cleaning tape so bad.

  • +7

this, plus the earlier deal on cassettes… 90s are back baby.

    • Haha ๐Ÿ‘

    • +1

      80โ€™s

  • +2

I've been using the ol' Paper and Isopropyl trick. Cheap as, works well and you can actually see how much crap comes off the vcr heads!

  • +11

Never ask for this in an adult shop. Youโ€™ll end up with something completely different.

    • -3

OP clearly posted cleaner not jobโ€ฆ.

      • +6

        nah

        IYKYK

    • +6

Buddy, I only ask for VHS Cleaner from adult shops

      • +3

When you want to really loosen up the VHS unit ๐Ÿ˜†

    • +5

The only VHS cleaner I ever need. I keep my hole VHS collection high, up and deep inside my box in the closet. Its hard to think of a reason not come around to deal like this, Dick Smith would approve 5/5….heavy loads of it!

      • You have a collection of holes on VHS?

        • A hole collection of holes, in fact.

        • +1

It's a good movie, although I've never read the book.

    • I was under the impression you're no longer able to sell "VHS cleaner" or "Leather cleaner" like this. But then, what kind of idiot is buying VHS cleaner to clean their VHS tapes?

  • +3

Does any manufacturer produce brand new VHS player or recorder in 2024?

  • +2

every 20-30 hours of operating time?! as if! more like, whenever the heck I remembered to do it.

  • +3

(profanity)' hell, and I felt nostalgic seeing a (blu-ray) disc burner earlier.

  • +6

Back in the day these never worked and I don't think much has changed. Much better to pop the top off the VCR and clean the head manually.

  • This is like an April Fool's day deal, I love it! lol

  • +2

This will look great hooked up to my 77C1 Oled

    • +3

Funny enough…I just fired up my old Sega Megadrive for my daughter. Still works perfectly.

      It looked terrible…she loved it..

  • +2

Thanka OP. Ruined my Sanyo VCR with the American Pie uncut tape in 2001. This should fix it right up.

Is Jeff Bezos selling the stuff from his garage? xD

    • Bald man found a stash buried under his stacks of cash.

Thank goodness for this post. My VHS dubbing machine is in need of a clean. Bought 5! Thanks OP!

4k upscaling should fix the lower resolution ๐Ÿ˜œ

  • +3

Any good deals on an automatic tape rewinder?

    • +2

The ones shaped like a race car?

      • We had one of those. It was great.

    • +2

      Be kind, rewind.

    • Only the dvd version. ;)

    • WhizzzzzzzzzzzzWHACK!

  • +9

    Blast from the past.

    Fatherโ€™s Day gift sorted.

Just a few months ago, my old man was asking me where to find a VHS cleaning tape or tape head spray. He still has his Sony VHS player from 1985 in working condition and owns over 500 VHS tapes. A few times a year, we get together during long weekends to binge-watch movies on his vintage Sony Projection TV and VCR. Well good old days they made things to last.

    • Very cheap and flimsy
Reviewed in Australia on 31 January 2023
Didn't work well in our video player, not sure if it was our player that was a problem but the cleaner tape was very flimsey.
