It’s like paying for prison and then dragging your friends to do time with you

    • Skeletor once took a cruise. He got a virus and now has a skinless skull for a head. It was all great until the fevers set in and had to be wheeled off the ship in a wheelchair.

      • Hahahaha

    • But you get free covid infections, that’s got to be worth something

      • Lots of other things to catch from people not washing their hands and all you can eat buffet. Add long days at sea - fun!

        • Lol

    • +12

what, a bit dramatic lol. Had a great time and would go again. lot's of good food. bring what you need and avoid extras.

      • +18

you can easily tell which ones have never been on a cruise, lol.

i have been on many cruises all over the world, and i love the set it and forget it holiday. pay once and covers accommodations, food, entertainment, etc…

stress free holiday for me with family and friends.

        • +2

          Blame the Titanic.

        • +4

Yeah, great value these days. Maybe they haven't seen a balcony room? Instant zen watching the ocean.

        • The one cruise I went on stopped at Conflict Island, it was amazing snorkeling and the most beautiful place. That day was almost worth the cost of the whole cruise.
Would be sad if they wind that one up on pacific explorer

        • -2

Think that's a little unfair to assume every negative comment is from someone who has never cruised. Being on a cruise ship is a compromise in almost every way over the same thing being offered on land.

The only positive thing I can think of being on a ship is the travel aspect (OK, let's forget about the days the ship is travelling in bad weather, rocking and rolling and making people sick and many activities cancelled as a result), being able to get off at a different location is good but even this I found to be a bit limited for time.

Horses for courses, not everyone likes cruising (and having cruised I feel qualified to comment) - I put myself firmly in this camp.

        • -2

you can easily tell which ones have never been on a cruise, lol.

Can also easily tell which ones are 40yo+ and/or have kids, lol

    • -6

Sure but the gruel is better and there's usually only a rape every 2nd cruise whereas in prison ………

    • +4

lol, that pretty much sums up my recent (first and only) P&O cruise too.

Mediocre RSL quality food - check
Having to line up outside separately to purchase an espresso coffee to bring it into the restaurant I want to take my breakfast in - check
Pay extra to have a steak at a restaurant for dinner - check
      Extortionate internet prices - check
Postage stamp sized pools full of kids - check
Cramped room we paid extra for because it had a tiny balcony - check
Getting to spend holidays with Shazza and Dazza and their always screaming tin lids - check

      • But what were you expecting?

        • -1

I went on the cruise with a fairly open mind, these are my thoughts after the cruise.

      • +3

Plastic cups for tea and coffee broke my spirit lol

        • +2

you know you are on a ship on water right?
image when the seas get rough and broken glass everywhere?
pretty stupid idea to use glass, huh?

maybe that is why they use plastic, just a thought.

      • +1

Sounds like you live near a good RSL!
Some ships/lines are much better than others.

      • -1

I may get negged here. Almost booked a 4-5 nights cruise but decided to watch some YouTube reviews. Watching how dated the rooms are and how crowded the dining venues and pool, we decided to just do our typical "mainland" holiday. May look into short cruises just for the experience.

  • +2

Can you smuggle booze onto a cruise staying in Aus waters? Do they check your bags? The only drinks package offered is soft drink. I just booked but I refuse to do my first cruise sober.

    • +2

Is giant bottles of listerine swapped with coloured vodka still a thing

    • +1

Shampbooze bottles are your friend here.

    • +1

So what's the final answer? I'd like to know as well.

      • They won’t be frisking as long as the metal detector doesn’t go off so I’ll be carrying it on person.

        • $35 for 2 empty bottles? Nah

          • +1

@bennybaubles: Sure it seems like a lot for a couple of empty bottles, but they do work.

Once you see the price of drinks on board, you'll be glad to have brought these.

      • +1

The security staff or Border Force have to scan the luggage of over 2000 passengers in a matter of hours. Broken down, it's little time per piece of luggage. As long as you have nothing which stands out when your luggage goes through the scanner you should be ok. I've used my Shampbooze bottles on three different cruises, been successful every time. A couple of friends have borrowed them on different occasions, also successful. That said, there's always a small chance you're the unlucky one who gets their bag randomly searched.

        • Ok thanks I might try a combo of a couple of water bottles in the bag plus the ol water bottle down the pants routine.

      • +1

1st cruise .. emptied an ice brick and used that.
2nd- Loaded up a 1.25L coke bottle..95% bourbon, 5 % coke (enough to look black).
3rd. Just chucked it in my case.

        • +1

          So…
How'd you take the Coke bottle if drinks, including water are not allowed?
And the 3rd time around, did they not scan and find out? Did you get away with it?

          • +1

@Lord Ra: Was Princess. No idea about the bottle not being allowed. They saw it, asked if it was just coke. Yep…done.

In Greece I carried on a couple of bottles of Whiskey and Vodka (by hand..no attempt to hide whatsoever) and a 6 pack of local beer on my little finger.

They just said, please hand it to the concierge desk..I didn't… and my room cleaner guy saw it….and brought me a fresh bucket of ice!

Sometimes being so blatant…allows you to hide things in plain site..

  • +4

The food on P&O is so bad… It reminded me of my uni residence.

    • have you tried Regent Seven Seas Cruises? it's fantastic, i really enjoyed it.

    • +1

      Cant agree more.
      Its rsl bistro food

    • +4

It was actually pretty good last time I went (1 year ago), literally the only highlight of my trip.
And every day is essentially three big all-you-can-eat buffets, so you get your money’s worth from food alone.

    • The food in the restaurants is okay, I had grilled salmon and veggies a few times and it was properly cooked, the food court it’s mostly grim

      • +2

I actually found the food court better than the main restaurant. I'll never forget the gross fish cakes they serve.

        Royal Caribbean overall much better.

        • Yes, I liked the roast beef and veg in the food court, however it was RSL tier as others have said. But so what! It’s cheap and cheerful!

  • Don't understand tried to book, is it 4 people in a room???

    • it depends, you can go solo, but will be charged for either 2 people or 4 people depending on the room.

        • +27

It does say 'Quad Share' in the title, so that shouldn't have been a surprise.

            • +4

@Lit Homie: unfortunately that is a horrible example to try to prove your point and show you are still wrong.

quad biking doesn't mean 4 people, it means 4 wheeled vehicle.

quad = 4, quad wheels, not quad people.

                • @Lit Homie: you know me so well, lol.

1st cruise i'm assuming? its probably best to bring a mate at least. everyone usually goes with a group of friends or families. not unheard of going solo, but you are going to have to pay for 2 or 4 people anyways, so you should bring someone.

                • +1

@Lit Homie: Is a bike, bikes usually have 2 wheels, it's in the name quadbiking. You look at the vehicle, clearly it does not have 2 wheels, ergo it is quad because it has 4 wheels.

Perhaps there is something else going on here.

                  • -8

@D3m3ntia: ahaha why are we still going on about this but I'm bored rn so I am compelled to reply, bike means two wheels quad bike means four 2 wheels? four 2 wheeled bikes..? okay..

where did looking at the vehicle come from? this conversation we are talking about the interpretation of words

            • +7

@Lit Homie: Context is crucial in understanding contemporary English terminology. Here, the context is accommodation on a cruise ship. 'Share' implies cabin sharing, while 'quad' denotes the number four. It should be apparent to most individuals with English reading skills at or above the high-school year 10 level that 'Quad Share' indicates a cabin shared by four people.

Click the deal link and it says- "Buy 2 adult fares and the 3rd and 4th guests in the room (adult or child) travel FREE!*".

        • I met some old pensioners who dig it, I think they’re going through a second adolescence

  • +1

I got an amazing deal yesterday on one that was 4k next month but got it for 2.3k. Stocked as this side of August is one of the best times to sail up QLD way.

Be mindful of the ones in Jan to march as it rains a bit up Airlie way.

Also you can only select go value (very basic) for these options. Once you select value pass expect to add on 250 pp on.

    • Great price! Can you send the crusie details and how you got this price, please?

      • Yep would like to know some tricks for getting this on the cheap as well please.

  • +4

P&O Australia is closing down in March 2025.

  • Whats is a 4 person room. Do they have two separate bedrooms?

    • same room with 2 beds above the lower beds with a ladder.

      • +5

        AKA two bunk beds.

        • +1

nope, bunk beds share the same frame with a bed on top and bottom.
he ones in the cabin can be converted to just 2 beds, 3 beds, or 4 beds.
so like i said, 2 beds below, and the option to use the beds above to flip down 90 degrees from the wall.

its more of a murphy or wall bed, and not a bunk bed.

          lol

        • Yeah when I went on P&O in December with the fam it was 2 bunk beds joined together. Made the room tight but it was kinda fun to do with the kids.

  • +3

    Swingers room :p

  • +5

Went on our first cruise last year with (on P&O) the kids and loved it. Surprised to see the whingers here on ozbargain.

    • Which one did you do? The comedy one took my eye is there enough for kids? I’ve never been on a cruise

      • 10 nights to New Guinea. Plenty for kids. Mine are primary school aged.

    • Your reaction is simply because you don’t know any better

      • and because I'm cheap. These others that people are raving about are a lot more $$$.

    • +6

Surprised to see whingers on ozbargain?
      Are you new here??

    • Took my kids to the Sheraton Mirage, they had a pretty good time as well.

  • +3

    OzB room? Who's in?

    • +7

  • Arent P&O closing shop in March next year?

  • is it true that quad rooms are usually lower floors & no windows & lower floor can be uncomfortable for sea sickness ?

    • +1

Most rooms on most floors can be converted to quad, they just change the beds.

  • +2

Sardine special rooms with rsl style food .
