[Refurb] Apple MacBook Air 13" M2 256GB Renewed (Midnight 2022) $899 + Delivery Only @ JB Hi-Fi

1160

Trying to ask JB Hi-Fi to match the OfficeWorks deal for M1, then found a lot of Renewed deals on clearance right now.

See this search link for all renewed MacBook Air.

M1 256GB Space Grey $749
M2 256GB Midnight $899
M2 512GB Space Grey $949

There's also one M2 256GB $1399 which makes me confused, what's the difference between this one and the $949 one?

I'm leaning to the $949 one.

  • Good price compared to Facebook. Any warranty on it?

    • +1

      1 year warranty from JB

  • +11

Fun fact: The $30 off JB perks works on it ;)

  • +4

eight gigabytes of random access memory is fine

    • +6

reduced bandwidth on the 256GB SSD on entry level M2 Macs is also fine (only one flash NAND chip).

      • +10

I was about to say - that 512 model is definitely worth the extra $50.

      • Fingerprints magnet for this colour is also fine (midnight)

    • +5

For most people, yeah. For years I ran my M1 with all the adobe apps and got away with it. Wouldn't recommend that if you like having 100 tabs open and all the adobe apps too, the Mac will crawl eventually and you'll want to restart to refresh it. But I did it, did my work on it, for most people it'll be enough.

  • Looks like the 512mb version is OOS (renewed version at least)

    • +2

      512mb

      thats a LOT.

    • +13

Damn! I should have pulled the trigger before posting it.

      • +10

that's no 1 ozbargain rule mate

  • +1

got it a year ago, Just for touch bar, guess this is the final Macbook model that will have it.

  • Damn bought the 256gb and didn’t know 512 was available

  • 512GB for $50 extra is 100% worth it.

    • +3

      But no stock

  • M2 OOS

  • 404's for everything aside from the M1 256GB Space Grey :-/

  • +7

Looks like all OOS now except for the M1.

Previous deal experience means these are almost certainly display units, not refurbished. Several purchasers including myself got laptops thrown loose bouncing around a plain brown box with dirt and scratches on them.

    • I wonder if you can return it if the condition is not ideal?

      • +2

Yeah I am still torn as to whether I will try. I can live with the scratches, it is more than I expected but not that bad. I am a bit worried about the keyboard being mashed by kids all day every day as a demo, and there are warranty questions since JB claim 1 year manufacturer warranty but apple registered the warranties as starting when they went on display almost a year ago. Just a bad purchase experience, they really didn't care at all about the product.

I haven't used mine any more than checking the battery health. I need one for a trip in 3 weeks so I am a bit stuck in terms of finding another deal and haven't decided yet if I'll try and return it. Luckily I filmed the unboxing because I could hear the laptop bouncing around in the box.

        • Yea I bought one just now but a bit scare of the keyboard issue. I hope they will still accept change of mind return even after we open and inspect it. Seems like mixed experience with JB refurb, some received it with original box and some don’t

        • Back when I worked in Apple support I would occasionally get a call for a device with a model identifier that said something like AUS-DEMO-MBP.

Always wondered why tf customers had them… makes sense now.

What doesn’t make sense though is why Apple allows them to be resold 🤔

          • @stickyfingers: I used to work for a competitor to JB when I was in school. Generally manufacturers just aren’t told. Most brands don’t have specific models and procedures for floor demonstration models so they just are retail units that are then sold to the customer as new when we run out of stock and they really want that model (usually they get a tiny additional discount). Since the receipt just says ‘1x new toaster’ etc with the date, it then has the full 1 year manufacturer warranty.

This is what I assume is happening here. HOWEVER, Apple actually tracks warranty from the time the unit is powered on, so I really question how this will play out if a claim is required.

            • @AutomationGuy: I think this may not be all true. Apple does track the first registration and/or association to an Apple account, but I doubt they track the first power up.

              • @[Deactivated]: The laptops we bought on this deal a couple of weeks ago all say in the settings that warranty ends between August-November this year. Plenty of comments to check out in the last deal. Since these were almost certainly shop demos, they were set up fully and then wiped - not just powered on once.

                • +2

@AutomationGuy: I imagine it's the same as other laptop brands, just get onto customer support and submit a photo of the receipt and they will change the start date of their warranty to match the purchase date.

                  • @Agret: Yep, you can contact Apple Support and they’ll be able to sort it out for you, this is assuming it was a new device purchased from an Apple Authorised Reseller though.

            • @AutomationGuy: Interesting to know.

In regards to the warranty start date, Apple has a loop in with all authorised resellers where their POS reports the sale to Apple’s own SAP system which registers the start date.

I was going to dive on the M1 until I read the reviews of broken keyboards. I'd rather spend a little extra and get an Apple refurb, where everything bar the internals/display is replaced.

    • oh dear if that's the case, I can't imagine how many pairs of hands have been whacking smacking those poor keyboard…..

      • Awww, that sucks. Still mentions on the Australian site they do it for iOS devices (new case and battery) but that was one of the best things about Apple refurbs - they were basically new anyway (it's rarely the hardware that wears out on a device)

        • +1

I've yet to wear out the software!

          • +1

@mskeggs: lol, should have specified the internal bits, storage might go eventually but motherboards and cpus on a Mac are pretty reliable in my experience. Keyboards and batteries a lot less so.

  • +2

So… these Macbooks are refurbished by JB themselves or by Apple?

    • +5

There is a previous deal post from a few weeks ago. Certainly a decent percent of these units have been public display units (like mine) and vary significantly in condition. Mine absolutely was not refurbished in any way, it was dirty, covered in dust and fingerprints and thrown loose into a large brown box with a charging cable and plug pack that have pink sticker residue over them.

      • Well…. in that case, I'd rather spend a few $$$ more for a proper "Refurb" product. Haha

    • +1

I ordered a macbook air m1 refurb ($749 AUD) and it was basically brand new.

Box looked good. Small marks, at best.

Opened device - battery health count of 2. Screen looked new, as did the keyboard and body - no visible marks. It may have been opened maybe once, then returned. That's the condition I got mine in. So your mileage may vary - i guess it depends.

      • Good to know, I was thinking about canceling but will keep it for now, if mine is like yours it’s definitely a keeper, if not can always return it claiming less than advertised manufacturer warranty

  • +2

Bought an M1 from the last deal, it was practically brand new not a mark on it. 3 cycle count. Great deal these renewed ones

  • +6

Don't have good experience with buying laptops with JB renewed

    • Thanks for letting us know.

    • +2

Yeah I hope people getting excited about this know JB refurbs have nothing I common with Apple’s great refurbs.

      • -1

        How do you know?

        • Because it doesn’t come with an Apple warranty and isn’t eligible for AppleCare.

You wouldn’t get things like this from an actual Apple refurb https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/15516185/redir

          • -2

@PainToad: They actually come with a one year warranty provided by Apple, they just aren't eligible for AppleCare+.

So I guess they do have more than 'nothing' in common.

            • @magic8ballgag: It will come with whatever Apple warranty is left since the original owner turned it on. If that happened to be less than 12 months ago, then you'll have 12 months of warranty. But that's luck of the draw.

That's in no way the same as the guaranteed full warranty length you get from real Apple refurbs.

              • @PainToad:

It will come with whatever Apple warranty is left since the original owner turned it on.

Nope, the warranty starts from the purchase date, as confirmed by JB Hi-Fi.

That's in no way the same as the guaranteed full warranty length you get from real Apple refurbs.

                Explain how it's different.

The JB salesperson clown is telling you porky pies. Unless they mean a warranty with JB and not with Apple. Which are not the same.

                  Explain how it's different.

If you don’t understand at this point, I don’t have any energy left to continue to explain it.

                  • @PainToad:

Who said someone from sales told me? And why would they lie?

You're making a lot of claims, but are yet to provide any credible source to prove them.

Back to my original question: how do you know what you're stating is true?

    • Guessing they are sold out.

  • Brand new M1 Air is around $1100 so is a renewed one without much warranty worth $750?

    • +5

I'd rather buy a new one if gonna keep it for 10+ yrs

    • not worth it in case of M1 imo

  • +4

I can't look at used laptops (specifically, MacBooks) the same after the repair video by Louis Rossmann where a customer had somehow splooged all over the mainboard, etc.

    • +2

Exactly, feels like buying a used public toilet back home …

  • +2

Man how's it oos so fast

    • +1

Just shows you how much demand there is for these 'lame 8gb' products despite the stat junky Apple haters on here constantly telling you otherwise.

My M1 Air is currently running way faster and better than my colleague's '16gb ram- better specs' windows laptop.

      • +2

My M1 air recently broke due to two failed capacitors that I can't replace… Shame apple doesn't sell any parts

        • +1

Because you'd absolutely be cracking open your Windows laptop to desolder and install new capacitors

Because if you were, open the case, get the specs by looking at the side of the capacitor, get the spares from Jaycar and fill your boots

    • There was probably only one or two available in the entire country.

  • Are you still leaning? 😁

  • +2

I only checked for these this morning, unlucky timing I guess, now there's just the same over priced 256GB M2 that has been there for days. Fortunately it's for someone else so I'm less bothered by missing out

  • +2

all scratched and keyboard letters faded

    • Which one did you get? I ordered m1 and got the shipping notification yesterday. Hope mine is in a better condition

  • +2

Just received my M1 Air - as others have mentioned, fairly minimal protection (brown box + air packets). That said, the laptop is in pretty good condition overall - no noticeable marks on the case, keyboard feels good and battery cycles only at 10 and health at 100%
Pleasantly surprised that the Apple warranty also started with the purchase date so can still add on AppleCare.

    • How to check the battery cycles ?

      • +2

System Settings > About > Scroll to bottom - System Report > Hardware - Power

  • Receive my MacBook Air m2 but got a dead pixel, warranty till march 2025. Have booked a Genius Bar and see if they can replace a display for me, I hate dead pixel

  • +1

Ordered a macbook air m2 256gb. Received the laptop along with a 30W charger and magsafe cable. The box was half-crushed and half of the included air bags were popped. The laptop itself, however, was in excellent condition. No scratches were visible anywhere. The battery had 20% charge and only three cycles.
