Been a while since I've seen a BR-R deal so for those of us who still use optical media for long term storage/backups and want media that's a notch above the normal bd-r in terms of quality (but not datalife+ versions which are 3X the price of these locally) here it is.

  • Capacity: 25GB
  • Speed: 6x
  • Pack Style: 25 Pack Spindle
  • Disc Surface: Wide Inkjet Printable
  • Print area: 22-118mm

76% 5 star value with an average of 4.7 out of 4226 ratings

Verbatium marketing regarding datalife 'Verbatim's professional optical media feature tighter specifications than the standards given by the relevant standardisation bodies. Tighter specifications ensure better compatibility with writers and recorders.'..

If you add 4 spindles to make it 100 discs it works out to be $69.03 (nice!)

Spoken like someone who has no clue how vulnerable their 'back up' is (assuming you even back up anything).

Yeah, optical storage is actually very good for longevity, I was reading recently. Flash is cheap these days, amazingly cheap, but I think has issues lasting all that long.

Depends. All my data DVDs and CDs I burnt back in the day are now unreadable. They degrade. But I knew that at the time and anything I really wanted was storage by other means.

          • @petal666: Read up on what M-Disc is… chalk and cheese difference to what CD or DVD could do.

Long life archiving is only achieved with M-Disc these days. Hard drives, flash drives, and pretty any other storage (including tape) can't compete with it. It's expensive per Gb, but when you're talking about family photos and other irreplaceable data, a couple hundred bucks is more than worth it.

          @GeneralSkunk
Yep, flash memory is terrific for convenience and size, but data deteriorates very quickly due to lack of power being run through the chips over time.
Same thing with hard drives, but they'll last a little longer (maybe up to 10 years, but you're really pushing it and risking your data).

M-Disc (long life Blu-ray media) will reliably last 10 times as long. There's some studies that suggest good data retention hundreds of years later… but you don't need to get that far. With the way technology advances, even 50 years is plenty as long as you can rely on that… and M-Disc will do that 100% for 50 years. Other current media cant get close to that time period.

You just need a modern drive that can properly burn onto M-Disc. Older burners don't burn 'hot enough' go get a burner that meets certification.

Recommendations for an external BR-R writer…

I own a Pioneer BDRXD07TB which is USB 3.0 that works well and is quiet and so far has worked well when I've needed it.

The next model up is the USB C version which is the BDR-XD08BK

They also have a slot type external but its more expensive and I prefer a simpler 'less mechanical' version with less points of failure.

  • C'mon, who really needs 25 bird scarers

    • doesn't work on mynahs, they still ate my garden tomatoes.

  • Still have 150 blank 25gb disks somewhere in my cupboard.
