Rtings Review here
"The Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 are very good for commutes and travel. These well-built headphones have over 60 hours of continuous playback time and a comfortable enough fit for long days on the go. They also come with a sturdy, hard carrying case to help protect the headphones when not in use. Their ANC system does a great job of cutting out noise across the full range, too, and only struggles to isolate you against the very lowest frequencies."

They were $292.5 a few weeks ago on eBay, but I didn't post because there was less than 10 left / Limited quantity available.
Still a fantastic price now, but might be worth waiting for the next 22% if you're in no rush.

That's good to know. I think the stock numbers are artificially limited, they maintain it at low levels to get the "ALMOST GONE!" warning, but then replace stock 1 for 1 as soon as orders are placed.

Tested this against XM5 and i prefer SQ of this to XM5 but ANC is nowhere near XM5 and ANC is important to me so i returned the set.

At this price or 292 as above, it is pretty good value.

The Sony definitely wins for most people, unfortunately it's well over $100 more. $300 for a pair of headphones is passable, however North of $400 is hard to swallow.

(outside of the two feak sub $400 sales)

The Sony definitely wins for most people

Online reviews beg to differ unless you're strictly talking about ANC.

        • -2

I more expect most people couldn't tell the difference in sound quality, but the ANC difference (in rtings especially) is quite substantial. So overall, the Sony would be the "winner".

          • @incipient: Not sure where you're getting that from.

This is exactly what rtings says when directly comparing the two:

"The Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless and the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless are similarly performing over-ears with different strengths. The Sony have a virtual soundstage feature, which helps to create a more immersive audio experience, their ANC system does a better job of blocking out background noise, and they support LDAC codec for hi-res audio. However, the Sennheiser are more comfortable, are better built, and have a significantly longer continuous playback time, and they support aptX Adaptive codec. Their sound is also a bit more neutral, which some users may prefer."

Reading further, the only real criticism of the Sennheiser is that it struggles to block out the "low rumble of bus engines".
Otherwise they are more comfortable, better built, have significantly more battery life, and offer a more neutral sound stage.

Hardly puts the Sony as the "winner"… and that's just one review. The other reviews online are even less favourable to the Sony ones.

Ever since Sennheiser was acquired by Sonova, Ive noticed Sennheiser build quality has downgraded. In particular Momentum use to have metal head bands, now it's plastic.

Found others, echoing the same sentiment.

It's definitely a downgrade compared to the prior generation, since it had metal build and used real leather. You don't need to seek confirmation on that part.

If you are looking for a better build, what are the alternatives around this price range?

    • +1

I agree the build quality is down from the momentum 3, but I have to say I was very surprised to hear the bump (up) in sound quality compared to the momentum 3, specifically because these are supposed to be the same drivers.

In terms of longevity, I've had my set for about 4 months now, toddlers have found them a few times, pulled on the cups, spread out the band, etc. and they're still immaculate.

If you have CommBank Yello you get $50 off when purchasing from Sennheiser's online store, combine that with the code honeysave at checkout and you're down to just $265 for what is (in my view) an outstanding pair of wireless headphones, especially at this price point. Bought a set this morning for my teenage daughter who's been stealing mine while I'm on leave from work.

    • great advice! this is also what i did earlier this morning :D

    • +1

I just checked but couldn't find the $50 off. Can you please let me know how you did it. Nevermind, looks like it's targeted.

    • Hmm I just had a look at this - honeysave seems to drop it down to $372, and the $50 from Yello would only push it down to $322?

Ah, I forgot the mention that's for the special edition (basically has gold accents) here

  • I am close to pulling the trigger. But my hesitation is, "am i going to miss LDAC?"

I currently have a Samsung Galaxy s22 and Sony 1000X?

I realise the M4s have APTx adaptive. But that's no good if my device doesn't support it.

Will the other improvements result in an overall better sound for mostly just streaming from Youtube Music even with lack of LDAC or APTx?

I mean I don't love my phone, and hopefully will replace it within a year. But not immediately.

Hoping for someone knowledgeable to come across this.

The main competitor for me is the Sony XM4s. I am prioritising sound quality over ANC, so long as the ANC is as good as my old Sony 1000x.
