  • Is this just an EFTPOS card that can actually be used for anything? I don't see how you can limit this due to the different type of systems each cinema uses.

Also anyone confirm that this site is legit?

Found my answer from T&Cs :

The Cinema Gift Card works on the eftpos payment platform for cinemas that have a merchant category code Motion Picture Theatres (7832). Gift cards are still subject to individual merchant acceptance and in accordance with these Terms & Conditions and any applicable law and subject always to the individual trading terms of each participating merchant.

The physical version is a prepaid eftpos gift card. You can use this in-person at merchants using MCC 7832, subject to individual merchant acceptance. You cannot redeem the physical version online nor over-the-phone nor via a mobile wallet, but you can exchange the physical version for the digital version.

The digital version is a prepaid Mastercard gift card. You can use this at merchants using MCC 7832, subject to individual merchant acceptance. You can redeem the digital version online, over-the-phone or in-person, but if you want to redeem it in-person, you must add it to Apple Pay, Google Wallet or Samsung Wallet first and then redeem it from there.

The way in which the card issuer can restrict this gift card to only MCC 7832 is by checking the MCC reported by the merchant when you attempt to make a purchase. The card issuer should decline the transaction if the reported MCC is something other than MCC 7832.

The individual merchant acceptance bit is important to note, because a merchant using MCC 7832 is not obliged to accept this gift card as a payment method. For example, if you are making a purchase online from a merchant using MCC 7832 and that merchant requires all payment cards to support 3-D Secure in order to reduce their risk of fraudulent transactions, the digital Cinema gift card would be rejected, as prepaid gift cards are unable to support 3-D Secure.

The site is also legit, as it is the online gift card portal operated by The Card Network (which issues other gift cards, such as TCN Home, TCN Him, TCN Pub & Bar). I will warn you though that the fraud detection system on this online gift card portal can be erratic at times, so there is a chance your purchase gets caught up in their fraud detection system and you will be told a day later that your order was cancelled…

  • You can also use this to buy discounted gift cards on the Hoyts website (which I then use to upgrade discounted vouchers).

    • Do you mind sharing how you get discounted gift cards in the hoyts website?

      • Oh, they're not available all the time, I buy them when Hoyts has promotions on.

        • Ok thanks!

  • These work really well and 20% is the highest discount they get up to!

Dendy is the only cinema I find these do not work online, they do however work in person.
