Is it me but every week seems every item is a few cents more…

Twining Tea Bags were $12 not long ago, then $13 and now $13.50. Half price at $6.75 really.

Finish dishwashing tablets $54 WTF. Half price at $27. Why can't they be $32 standard price if can sell them for $27 half price and help the common people of this country.

Soon no one will be able to even buy groceries at this rate. Last week i got emails regarding my Gas going up, plus another from internet (Tangerine) saying that's going up $3. What's is $3, just money grabbers.

The world has gone bonkers and seems there is no end to this absolute carnage of a world. Those 80's & 90"s movies about the world being baron and a wasteland of hungry, mad people were not so far fetched !

Just buy 'em when they're on special, fren.

      • I agree but surely if can sell for $27 why is normal price $54. Just money grabbing ! The old joke of living on bread and water is faster becoming reality for many a people.

I'd say the half price sale price would be well below cost (that's called a "loss leader" to lure people into the store to hopefully buy other full price things while they're there). Also each supplier will have a different deal with Coles… sometimes when there are big discounts on it's the supplier (e.g whoever makes Finish) wearing the loss in order to get people to try their product, in other circumstances it's probably Coles to get people through the door. It's pretty complicated stuff that I don't understand fully.

What I do know, though, is that I like it when products that I only need to buy sometimes (such as detergent) are put on this boom/bust price cycle where they swing from a silly full price to a compelling half price. It gives people who are willing to think and plan the chance to get good deals, and punishes the people who just throw stuff into their trolley without looking. The "everyday low price" stuff sucks because it's presumably priced to give the supermarket a few percent profit, and there are no chances to ever get under it. I like it when an idiot tax subsidises my trip to the supermarket.

Only in Australia are people getting paid 100s and 1000s and they complaint about $3 rises. Have a look around pal. People are hungry in Europe.

      • +2

I don't get paid 100s and 1000s pal. I'm fully aware people are hungry everywhere, not just Europe as you state.

My statement is/was that many a company now (ie this instance Coles) are just out to make as much money as possible with no reality to the ongoing world be here Australia or Timbuctoo.

        • -2

Why wouldnt a company try to make the most money? How is it bad?

          • @nikoris: There are plenty of laws prohibiting certain strategies for doing this (price fixing, sharing markets, rigging bids, controlling output, and more).

Ultimately Coles is selling the simplest form of the basic input (food) for people staying alive, and that's naturally going to invite a lot of scrutiny of whether they're acting fairly and maintaining a social license.

We don't live in a wild west pure free market and I for one am glad about that.

But that $3 on one thing is different to $3 on everything you put in your trolley, which adds up. Life is more expensive here, and wages dont rise as fast to match the cost of living.

          Nicely put. 100%

" Life is more expensive here "
Yes our real estate rents & property ownership are amongst the worlds most expensive.
The corporations & billionairs are setting our course.
You feel the change in winds, the next 30 yrs will be phenomenal.
As a renter I have to figure out how to survive, our world is changing forever.

          • @PlanetGreed: The corporations are indeed setting our course. We will have to fight if we want to make it through another 30 years.

      • Everyone wants to be paid at least $30 per hour these days so this will push up prices

I have noticed increases for certain products too. I think it's Coles-Wollies strategy to mark up the price for certain products before offering half price. For many things that are usually/sometimes half price, better just buy/stock up when half price unless if you really need it. For me, I am not interested to buy $3 (half price) chips or chocolate, but if they go down to $2.5 or less (could be different brand), I'll consider to buy them depends on my preference and other things for example. For certain goods, it could be like this week half price at Coles then next week half price at Wollies for the same product … Feels like cartel or other bad things. Previously I bought Milo cereals half price (from $8.8) at Coles, then this week they will be half price on Woolies …

    • +2

The strategy is to put your favourite goods you need or want to watch the prices in the Coles and Wollies app (list). I remember the prices of many goods that are in my list (Coles/Wollies app). For many things that usually/sometimes half price, only buy them or stock up when it's half price. So, sometimes I shop at Coles, sometimes at Wollies or could be both at the same day if I need certain things with the price that I accept (half price usually). Sometimes at Aldi too. Also compare with other stores for certain thing such as multivitamins for example. Type in google the product name, then click/tap "Shopping". Google will show the prices from different stores for the same product.

    • That's the transitory inflation we've heard so much about.

  • Looks like Amazon is price matching the Pringles, with an additional 5% off with S&S too. Just wish they had smaler packs.
