Yep, not as good as before. Seems like this is a trend lately 🥲

      • +10

Is it same as before? Don't actually need NAB card? haha

EDIT: confirmed, do not need to pay with NAB card!

    • Documents obtained by The Australian show Prezzee recorded a statutory $79.2m net loss for the 18 months to December 31 after a $38.9m loss in the previous financial year….

When you're losing moeny hand over fist I'm not surprised they're cutting promos….in fact i'd be worried they collapse and leave gift card holders out to dry.

      • +1

I think customers would be fine if they swap the Prezzee Smart cards to the brands and retailers of their choice

        • +1

Nope they can cancel your cards and have proven that with their last debacle

      • +1

There's a bit more to it than just the statutory loss. There's only so much they can recognise under the accounting standards until the cards are redeemed or expire. The rest of the financials would paint a better picture of their business overall, but I'm not going to pay ASIC $20 to get those.

        • +1

“If I sell a $100 gift card, it’s $100 in cash and $100 in liabilities until the card is used. Before then, we can’t get it off our balance sheet as a liability,” the company said through a spokesman.

“When we sell more cards, we can’t recognise the revenue until the cards are used under Australian accounting standards. Although there is an increase in financial liabilities we will never have to pay that obligation, but it still sits on our balance sheet.”

Internal company data showed that unless a card was used in the first four months, it was unlikely to be used, a person familiar with the company said.

          https://www.afr.com/companies/retail/shaun-bonett-s-prezzee-…

          • @trixieb: Why would it sit in the liabilities unless they literally have not paid for the gift card?
I would have assumed at the time we buy the card they have paid a certain amount to the retailer

            • +1

@furyou: But under Australian accounting standards, the value of the card is treated as a liability until it is used. So even if a customer doesn't use it for years, it's not considered 'revenue' yet.

What happened: In the 18 months to December 2023, Prezzee sold worth $3.4 billion worth of e-gift cards, with revenue of more than $161 million. But despite these top line numbers, they copped a $79 million loss.

What else: Prezzee claims their results are actually much better, and blamed Australian accounting standards for unflattering financial results - because the accounting standards don’t allow Prezzee to book “breakage” upfront.

              https://www.flux.finance/post/prezzee-goes-deeper-in-the-red….

              • +1

@trixieb: I mean that's the case for Woolworths if I buy a Woolworths gift card.

But I'm paying prezee say $95 for a $100 gift card, and they pay Woolworths I dunno say $90 for it. The liability has nothing to do with them.

Unless this suggests that something else happens. Ie they aren't paying Woolworths up front for the card? But somehow have the ability to generate them?

                Sounds rather weird

                • +1

@furyou: @ol mate @cloudy @10101010101 @WookieMonster I'm not sure how the above arrangement works and haven't found any info online. I caught up with an accountant this evening but it's not his area of expertise and he doesn't know either.

I just read that the co-founder of Prezzee and other senior staff had left recently. It may explain the lack of Prezzee offers.

Prezzee was able to cancel the Big W gift cards that were sent in error last month. As @10101010101 pointed out, our gift cards that have been swapped to the brands and retailers from the Smart eGift card may not be secure if Prezzee goes bust. It may not be legal for Prezzee to cancel anyway.

I also found out, due to a dispute, Amazon US no longer supplies its gift cards to Prezzee. This would be a major loss for Prezzee as Amazon is the most popular gift card in the US.

                  • (1) July 2023 Here is an email that Prezzee sent to the Treasury about the Gift Card Exemption:

                  https://treasury.gov.au/sites/default/files/2023-12/c2023-40…

Should we be concerned with the departure of the co-founder and other senior staff at Prezzee?

                  • (2) May 15 2024 Prezzee co-founder quits Shaun Bonett-owned gift card company

Claire Morris, the co-founder of Prezzee, the e-gift card payments group now controlled by businessman Shaun Bonett, has resigned from the board and as a brand ambassador, becoming the latest in a string of senior figures departing the company.

Mr Bonett bought into Prezzee, founded by Ms Morris and Matt Hoggett, in 2015 and has slowly increased his control over the business. He now serves as its chief executive and executive chairman.

Prezzee allows customers to buy gift cards for retailers such as Apple and David Jones. Mr Bonett claims the company is worth $1 billion.

Prezzee has only filed one set of accounts, showing it lost nearly $40 million in 2022, which it blamed on accounting changes. No accounts for last year have been filed.

Mr Bonett emailed staff about her departure earlier this week.

“It is with great sadness I inform you of Claire Morris’ decision to step down from her role as a board member and Global Brand Ambassador,” Mr Bonett wrote. “As a co-founder of Prezzee, Claire has helped grow the business from its ‘start up’ beginnings to a global business.”

Mr Bonett was approached for comment.

Ms Morris did not respond to a request for comment. But her departure follows that of nearly a dozen senior figures who have left Prezzee in the past 18 months, including the heads of human resources in Australia and the United States, where the company focused its efforts.

The company also lost its chief financial officer, chief digital officer, chief commercial officer, chief marketing officer, its Australian managing director and the president of its US operation.

“Most of the staff you have listed either did not report to Mr Bonett or have any day-to-day dealings with him, or were contractors who were employed for fixed periods of time,” Mr Bonett’s spokesman has previously said.

Mr Bonett founded Precision Group, which operates a large property portfolio in Australia and New Zealand. He is also Pezzee’s major shareholder.

The Financial Review Rich List estimated his fortune at $2.31 billion last year, making him Australia’s 53rd wealthiest person.

An AFR Weekend investigation, which included interviews with more than a dozen people close to the businessman and his companies, suggested those figures could be far from reality.

Mr Bonett has used his social media accounts to spruik the company’s “unicorn status”, and valuation of more than $1 billion.

That figure comes not from a share sale, but from investment bank Morgan Stanley, provided as part of a pitch to float the business in 2021, a period when valuations for technology firms were sky high.

One peer, ASX-listed gift card and transaction services group EML Payments, had a market capitalisation of more than $2 billion in 2021. It is valued at $380 million, even after a 27 per cent share rise this year.

                  https://www.afr.com/companies/retail/prezzee-co-founder-quit…

                  • (3) June 11 2024 Shaun Bonett’s Prezzee has a costly run-in with Amazon

Prezzee, the gift card payments group controlled by billionaire businessman Shaun Bonett, has had to stop selling Amazon vouchers in the United States, undermining a key revenue stream, after damaging its relationship with the tech giant.

Prezzee operates an app allowing customers to buy, send and store digital gift cards for retailers around the world, including Apple and David Jones. It is largely owned by Mr Bonett, the company’s chairman, who has previously spruiked a valuation of more than $1 billion as Prezzee focuses on growth in the US and Britain.

Two sources with knowledge of the matter, however, told The Australian Financial Review that Amazon had last year become concerned about the terms under which Prezzee was selling its gift cards to buy now, pay later group Klarna, which then on-sells them. Amazon requested Prezzee stop sales while it investigated the issue. When it did not, Amazon cut off the supply of gift cards to Prezzee.

Customers can still buy Amazon Australia cards from Prezzee but not those that work on the US website. Klarna was not at fault in the dispute, and switched to another, larger gift card provider – a competitor of Prezzee’s – for a supply of Amazon gift cards.

Amazon is the most popular gift card in the US.

In response to questions, a spokesman for Mr Bonett said: “Any search of our platform would reflect Amazon as an existing retail brand, and we are bound by confidentiality with respect to our commercial relationships.”

The Financial Review has revealed doubts about Prezzee’s $1 billion valuation, a figure not drawn from a share sale but from Morgan Stanley, provided as part of a pitch to float the business in 2021, a period when valuations for technology firms were sky-high.

Mr Bonett first took a stake in Prezzee in 2015, buying into a company founded by Claire Morris and Matt Hoggett. The company has only filed one set of accounts, for 2022, showing that it had lost nearly $40 million in that period. The company blamed accounting changes, saying a “secretarial oversight related to changing our year-end” was the reason for the delayed filings. Directors had also not been able to pass a solvency resolution.

The reason given by the company for operating at a loss was that accounting standards prevented it from recognising gift card revenue until a card was used.

In the past 18 months, Prezzee has also lost chief executives, its chief financial officer, chief digital officer, chief commercial officer, chief marketing officer, its Australian managing director, its human resources heads for both Australia and the US and the president of its US operation. More recently, Ms Morris resigned from the board and left the company.

Mr Bonett founded Precision Group in 1994, which operates a portfolio of 10 properties in Australia and New Zealand, mostly made up of shopping centres. Precision’s financial accounts are not publicly available.

However, he has three office properties and has previously said he has 100 per cent occupancy at his Port Adelaide Customs House office, and 90 per cent occupancy at both an office building at 144 Edward Street in Brisbane’s CBD and at the Metro Chatswood Business Centre, an office building near the Chatswood railway station in Sydney.

Mr Bonett bought the Chatswood address from Sydney Water for about $14 million in 2008. The property appeared empty last month and was still sporting Sydney Water insignia. A tenant in a building opposite said they had never seen anyone come or go from the property.

“The property has been tenanted and fully leased. The property is now subject to a DA and in redevelopment,” a spokesman for Mr Bonett said.

                  https://www.afr.com/companies/financial-services/shaun-bonet…

                  • @trixieb: It sounds like a deliveroo….

I'm going to make a guess at the business model.

They have a licence to print gift cards. They do not actually pay the retailers until the gift card is redeemed. They are operating on the assumption that 40% of users do not redeem their gift cards.

This means they are betting on 100 people buying $100 gift cards. 40 of them do not use it. So they only have to pay for 60 times $100. Huge profit but cannot be accounted for in profit and loss

That would explain why he thinks it's a unicorn.
And why normal people might think it's nuts and leave the company.

                    • @furyou: @WookieMonster I found further info this morning. Do you think unused gift cards from Prezzee that have been converted to retailers would still be available if Prezzee goes bust?

Prezzee can track all gift cards sold. Last month, Prezzee had the ability to invalidate the Big W gift cards in our Everyday Rewards app.

                      • (1) Bookkeeping for gift cards:

For general Gift Certificates or Vouchers, because the goods or services have not yet been provided to the customer, under the Goods and Services Tax Ruling GSTR 2000/D22, GST is not realised until the gift voucher is redeemed. Hence, a business needs to acknowledge all general gift vouchers purchased as a liability.*

                      • (2) 21 Sep 2022 Supplier agreement with digital gift card giant Prezzee

SportsHero Limited is very pleased to announce that its wholly owned Australian subsidiary, EsportsHero Pty Ltd (EsportsHero), has today executed an Australian Gift Card Supplier Agreement (Agreement) with digital gift card giant Prezzee Pty Ltd (Prezzee).

                      • Either party may terminate the Agreement immediately (or from such other date as it may nominate), or in the case of Prezzee it may also elect to withhold provision of the Gift Cards, by giving the other party written notice if:

the other party suffers an Insolvency Event (as that term is definedin the Agreement).

                      • Upon termination of this Agreement for any reason:

                      (a) the parties’ respective rights and obligations with respect to payment of amounts owing shall continue until such time as all payments owed have been made

                      https://www.listcorp.com/asx/sho/sportshero-limited/news/sup…

                      • (3) The co-founder Claire Morris left Prezzee recently. Her husband Matt Hoggett is still at Prezzee

A decade ago I founded Prezzee with my husband Matt Hoggett and now after ten years it is time to step away. I am so incredibly grateful for the relationships I have formed - both in the business with our team and further afield with our merchants, partners and customers. I can’t tell you how proud I am of what we have achieved. The little wins that turned into big wins. The milestone after milestone that propelled us from just two people to four to ten to over 200.

                      https://www.linkedin.com/posts/matthoggett_prezzee-giving-ne…

                      • @trixieb: I think Prezzee only has the right to cancel bonus eGCs that are usually short dated. This is also in line with the comments saying Econnex can extend Woolworths bonus eGC 3 months expiry for some customers.

                      • +1

                        @trixieb:

Do you think unused gift cards from Prezzee that have been converted to retailers would still be available if Prezzee goes bust?

It is hard to say with certainty, but I would like to think that would be the case.

The reason I say it is hard to say with certainty is that I do not know the nature of the relationship between Prezzee and each of the retailers. I see you have found the example of SportsHero Limited, and my interpretation of in the case of Prezzee it may also elect to withhold provision of the Gift Cards is that it only refers to the sale of gift cards to customers or having them available as an exchange option, not Prezzee taking back gift cards already provided to customers upon Prezzee going bust.

Of course, if Prezzee went bust tomorrow and you did not save copies of your Coles or Bunnings or Everyday WISH digital gift cards outside of Prezzee, I suspect that you will have a hard time accessing those details. That is the reason I save a copy of any active retailer gift cards obtained through Prezzee offline.

Last month, Prezzee had the ability to invalidate the Big W gift cards in our Everyday Rewards app.

Last month, Prezzee followed its Terms of Sale by correcting the error:

In the event of an error, we will endeavour to correct it as quickly as possible and revise your order accordingly, or to cancel the order and refund any charged amount.

I would have thought that Prezzee needed to work with Woolworths Group to fix the error, as Woolworths Group are the issuers of BIG W Bonus Store eGift Cards at the end of the day, plus the BIG W Bonus Store eGift Cards were already activated at the time of purchase. I would be surprised if Prezzee were able to fix the error themselves, as they cannot generate Bonus Store eGift Cards by themselves; they need to get Woolworths Group to generate fresh stock of Bonus Store eGift Cards.

                        • +1

                          @WookieMonster: Thanks for the analysis.

Yes, Prezzee would have needed Woolworths Group help to find and cancel those gift cards in our app.

Great reminder to convert the swappable eGift cards to the brands and retailers of our choice and save copies or take screenshots.

    Make prezzee great again!

    This is an inferior version.

No Coles, eBay or Amazon listed

    • +2

Thanks, I assumed eBay was included.

    • +2

Yikes. good to know. Paypal and Amex both errored out for me.

      • Perhaps they learned fro the last promo.

      • Amex through Paypal worked fine for me

      • Paypal and non NAB card errored out for me too.

    • +1

      Still has got Bunnings

    • At least Dan Murphy is in there

    • Interesting, my Prezzee Smart $150 from back in Dec has eBay, Amazon, Coles etc

  • +2

    FYI NAB's t&cs state:
You are only entitled to one Qualifying Purchase during the Promotion Period.

    • +1

Said that in the previous promo too haha but we were all able to get it multiple times during promotion period

  • +3

There also appears to be some contradiction between NAB and Prezzee on this card.
The list below is from the NAB t&cs at the bottom

Note 1: Retailers excluded from Offer.
    Amazon
    BIG W
    Bill Fairies
    Boost Mobile Pre-Paid
    BP
    BWS
    Chemist Warehouse
    Coles
    Coles Groceries
    eBay
    EG Fuel
    Everyday WISH
    Flight Centre
    Give Back Card (Donation)
    Harvey Norman
    Lyca Mobile PrePaid
    Officeworks
    Woolworths Simply Groceries
    Telstra Pre-Paid
    Travel Associates
    UBER
    Uber Eats
    Woolworths
    Woolworths Essentials
    Woolworths Supermarket

However, the Prezzee link includes some of those retailers as eligible for swap (eg Woolworths appears on the 'See all brands and retailers' link)

OK took one for the team.

Purchased a card, used AMEX (not NAB), swapped for Woolworths, added to Rewards app. All seems fine.

  • +4

The code can be used multiple times, I confirmed. Also, Amex worked fine.

  • Can confirm offer can be redeemed multiple times and I was also able to burn some vanilla visa cards via PayPal.

    • hey, just to confirm we purchase NAB X Prezzee Smart eGift Cards 100 with promotion code, and then convert to vanilla visa?

      • +1

        No, the other way around.

Buy vanilla visa card first and then use that to buy this

        • noted thanks

  • Coles definitely not there?

    • +3

      Just checked. Nope

  • +1

    not a good deal

  • -1

Stingy on the selection this time and if buying no one in their right mind should buy more than $100 for $5

    • +2

Not the best by any means, but if you’re running low on gift cards and want a guaranteed 5% off your Woolies groceries I’d say it’s passable.

        • +1

Yes, that equates to about 4.7% off whereas this is 5%.

      • +1

Wish gift cards via Seniors discount is better

        • How? Is it not the exact same discount?

          • +3

@Bigboy97: Wish gift cards can be used at the Woolworths group of brands including Ampol petrol stations. 5% discount every day so you can buy $50 worth or $500 worth directly from Woolworths and not have to worry about Prezzee going bust (or screwing up issuing gift cards like they did in their recent promo).

    • -1

lol got negged I love it

so you guys can go ahead and buy a $700 gc and get $5 discount instead of buying $100 bundles

      • You probably got negged because people interpreted your comment to mean:

"No one should be buying multiple $100 cards, with a $5 discount (effectively a 5% discount)"

whereas I believe your intention was:

"If you buy a card of greater than $100 value (i.e. anything between $101 and $700) you are effectively reducing your equivalent discount to <5% - which no Ozbargainer in their right mind should do.

It definitely comes across as the former, mostly as an extension of the gripe against the drop in offer from $10 on $150 to $5 in $100.

  • Thanks for sharing OP!

Got it successfully using Paypal that is linked to my debit card. Then redeemed for Woolworths gift card with no problems. If using the Brave browser then I had to turn shields off before submitting the payment.
