Am i the only one that thinks this product is useless?

IF you are leaving a coffee out for long enough to justify using a self heating mug, did you really want to have that coffee? don't think i would want a coffee that's been out for an hour (even if it is warm).

The only case where i will have a not freshly made coffee is when I'm on a road trip or somewhere remote where i made it earlier and have it in a thermos…..of which the mug isn't really of use then anyway.

I think this is just a gimmick.

i mean i am a slow drinker, and i've resorted to using ceramic mugs like Sttoke to keep it at least decently warm so I dont have to drink cold coffee over 1-2 hours..

This would appeal to me; but i suspect an ceramic or insulated mug like what Im currently using will just be simpler

      • How do you have your coffee? any milk in it? if having with milk in it, i really wouldn't recommend having it after the 2 hour mark. The milk has a higher chance of going bad. If less than the 2 hour mark, then yes a ceramic should do the job just as well.

        source

        • +2

oh i have it black usually. but noted with thanks.

        • This is what you're basing your "milk could go bad" statement on?

If you add milk or creamer to your brewed coffee, drink it within 2 hours if left at room temperature. You can keep it in a sealed container in the fridge for a day or two. But be sure to smell it and check for any signs of spoiling before consuming, since milk can go bad.

There's a fair bit of leeway between "2 hours" and "a day or two". That's a crappy, nothing article with a lot of opinion and little evidence.

          • @banana365: Their 2 completely different environmental conditions, hence why one says 2 hours, whilst the other says 2 days.

Sealed in a container in a fridge is a difficult environment for Bacteria to grow in (comparatively)
Whilst on a desk, at room temperate is a hive for Bacteria to grow VERY quickly.

Yes, that is what I'm basing my statement on, don't see how what you said disproves it though.

I've been using this in the office for about a year, it's absolutely fantastic for black coffee and tea - milk curdles so it's not ideal, but generally black coffee is good for many hours, so it's perfect for sippers.

The reason this is better than a thermos is that it allows the drink to cool to the ideal temperature and keeps it there.

Only downsides for me is not dishwashable + cannot charge with usb

      • +1

yeah fair enough, i guess something i find really misleading is that most of the marketing material shows it with coffee that has milk, as mentioned in my response to Lawyerz, i really wouldn't recommend anybody that has milk with their coffee using this, instead use an insulated or ceramic cup.

    • +2

I have both the mug and travel mug, if either would break, i would replace in a heartbeat. Its nice to be able to take my time with coffee and not worry about having to drink it within a set window of time, especially in winter.

    • Can be used to keep water or tea warm in the mug and drink whenever needed.

    • +1

When I became a parent, I would rarely get to drink hot coffee. I'd make the coffee, get called away to do something, hours later come across the forgotten coffee, and just swig it cold.

  • +3

Just get a Yeti or Camelbak insulated cup… With the cover on, it can keep your coffee hot for hours.

    • +1

This cup is a luxury for sure, but the one thing a cup like this has over an insulated container is that it can keep it at your ideal temperature.

So it's not about keeping it scalding hot for hours, it's more about getting it to your desired drinking temp and keeping it there.

      • Give your insulated mug a rinse with boiling water to preheat it, then fill it with your drink at or slightly above your desired temperature. It'll stay pretty close for a couple of hours.

Or, get a phase change mug like https://joeveo.com/collections/brushed-stainless-temperfect-…

No need to plug it in, works anywhere.

Are these the ones that caused the fire that wiped out Latte Larry's and Mocha Joe's?

  • +4

I got one of this https://amzn.asia/d/0iPf5wsd

    Cheap and works for me

    • That looks like the same heating pad on a filtered coffee machine. See I'd invest in this for under $20

  • Dishwasher safe? /s

    • Definitely not. Hand wash only.

  • I remember this got a good review from James Hoffmann.

  • Just nuke it in the microwave… you save $$$ and very soon you can have radioactive superhuman strength.

    • +1

I lost my first one to a microwave by an unaware housemate. Luckily it didn't cause a fire.

  • :D

  • Mrs. StingyBritches got one as a pressie. She is the ideal user as she leaves her (normal) tea mug all over the house and then must reheat it numerous times in the microwave.

Only problem seems to be the Ember's battery - been using it for approx. six months, but the time to battery depletion is now 60 minutes instead of 80-90 minutes. When/if the battery dies the cup is rendered useless!

    • If the cup is turned on and on the charging coaster, then it won't use the battery (also won't charge it) and will just keep it heated up till you remove it.

    • +1

if the battery dies the cup is rendered useless!

Surely it will still function as a cup?

      • Sure, but… Mrs. StingyBritches wants a 'normal' cup she can reheat in the microwave. This cup contains metal, so a dead Ember won't work for her.

  • +1

anyone know a normal mug that looks similar to that? don't want a smart mug but I think the design is sleek

  • +1

Someone in Vinnies must have a connection with Ember? Isn't this the 2nd time they have had a sale on this cup
