    Gen6 Detect when

    • +1

      how when is soon

    • +1

We don't know if the new model will be called Gen 6. (i.e. V10 through V15 were all based on their Gen 4 motor design). They could go with Gen 6 nomenclature, but it wouldn't technically make sense

  • I need to get one.l but whats the actual best here.
    I have carpet and tiles.

    • +2

I use Gen5 Detect on carpet and tiles. Great result compared to my old V6! I purchased a spare battery that helps me clean the whole house in 1 go (4 bedrooms + other usual areas).

      • How much is an extra battery?

      • Its like +500 on the v8 though?

      • The v6 is an absolute dogshit. I recently upgraded to a samsung jet bespoke for $725 through EPP store ($50 trade in credit for my dead v6), my god it is so much better. At time i was considering dyson or samsung but i went with samsung because value for money is much better. Apart from the standard attachments, it has an extra battery and a mop head. Its stand can also empty the bin. All in all i am very happy with it so far

        • There are many variants, Which specific model of jet did you buy?

Do u think Samsung is better buy than V10 or Gen5 detect?

I am currently with V6 which is dying …

          • +2

            @sigma: https://www.rtings.com/vacuum/tools/compare/dyson-v15-detect…
            [TLDR]

The Dyson V15 Detect is better than the Samsung Bespoke Jet. The Dyson incurs virtually no recurring costs, takes up less room when not in use, has a larger dustbin, exerts a stronger suction force at its floorhead, and performs better on bare floors and carpets. However, the Samsung comes with a cleaning station accessory that lets you quickly empty its dustbin, making it easier to maintain. It also comes with two batteries that can be charged simultaneously, giving you a much longer overall runtime. It's also fully compatible with a dedicated mopping floorhead to help deal with dried-on stains, though this attachment needs to be purchased separately.

Another thing that reviewers don't normally cover is after sale support from the company. I had good experiences with Dyson support after sale whereas Samsung were horrible. Made the mistake buying Samsung phones twice, got the run around and never resolved. Should have learnt my mistake the first time but gave them another chance, and happened again. It was not even a repair issue. I was trying to activate Samsung Care which was supposedly included. So iPhones for me since then (quick and satisfactory resolution for issues).

          • +1

@sigma: I bought the bespoke elite pro. I think the value for money is better if you can get it for cheap through EPP discount. If you spend the money of the v15, it is better to get the some samsung like mine for 700-800. If you only want to spend around 400ish, then maybe v10 better value. The suction performance might not be as good as the gen5, but i am happy with it. I have other type of vac for heavy duty stuff.

Dust bin size isn't an issue because i empty it via the station after each use. Overall i am happy.

      • Surprising you need a second battery. You're not using it on boost mode all the time are you? Not recommended as it'll wear the batteries out over time

        • I don’t use boost mode. Just normal mode. It really depends on the size of your house.

  • +2

Thanks, was almost about to pull the trigger on yesterday's deal but glad I waited.

  • Just here to say it's more like OB's biggest regret at money misspent, not OB's favourite

    • What is OB’s favourite then?

      • -1

something like this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/798975 or similar. They're not great but neither are the dysons, the main limitation is hopeless vacuum power because of the battery limitations that all such systems suffer from.

        • -1

That's a crock, the Lubluelu isn't even in the same league as a V11, let alone a Gen 5. There are legit alternatives to the high end of the Dyson range (i.e. Miele Triflex HX2 and Samsung Jet 95/Bespoke) but the one you linked isn't one of them (as demonstrated in the comments there too).

          • @Anthropomorphised: But my point is that there's no substantial difference between the V11, Gen 5, or any other cordless vacuum. They all suffer from the problem that the battery is too feeble run for longer than about 10 mins at a decent vacuum power level.

            • -1

@Horacio: That’s frankly silly. You don’t need to use the maximum suction on most powerful vacuums to get a good clean. From experience, I’ve gotten a better clean from high end cordless units than I did from my mid-range corded unit, part of which is due to the better efficiency from motorised heads. I’ve got a V11 and a Gen 5, have extensively used the Triflex HX2 and Jet 95, all of those units got approx 20-40 mins on medium (longer when using low which is fine for hard floors with a fluffy head) which was more than enough suction and good enough battery in my experience. My Gen5 picked up a plenty from my floor after doing a first run with my family Miele C3. A corded unit with a motorised head will always have a higher performance ceiling, but calling the cordfree units feeble is simply silly.

            • +1

@Horacio: I can finish vacuuming my place in 30 minutes at "decent vacuum power level" with a Gen5 and still have juice left.

              • @Buy2Much: Thanks for both replies.. Mine really does croak at ten mins on 'turbo', from the first day it was delivered. I agree the spinning heads are good under some circumstances but I find they often flick stuff around, and medium sized objects - the size of a leaf, for example, don't get lifted up into the head at all. Meanwhile the 'normal' setting really is too weak to pick anything more than the lightest fluff from our floors. The contrast with a corded vacuum is night and day, I now only use the Dyson for spot messes, and if I do use it for a whole room, I usually have to redo the floor with the corded one in any case.

                • @Horacio: If you don’t mind my asking, what model are you using? Leaf pickup is definitely poor on most cordfree units due to the small sizes of the tubes etc, will definitely agree on that point. Happy to try troubleshoot to figure out what’s going wrong if there’s anything.

                  • @Anthropomorphised: Ironically it's called a V8 :) As with many old houses we have wooden floorboards with gaps running along between them that vary between about 1-5mm. The V8 just can't generate enough vacuum power to fish dirt out from the gaps.. also the head ends up pushing a lot of stuff along in front of it, or dust gets stuck in the felt under the head, etc.. One trip around with the cordless and the additional suction power sorts it all out. I wouldn't mind if I hadn't spent so much on the damn thing without realising its limitations compared to a corded version.. they should be more upfront about it.

Use the 10% off Perks code

      • do you have the 10% perks code or how do you get it. I received an email from JB Hi-Fi with a code for $10 off.

        • Here’s a code if you want to use it

          92CB5PP2CSPX6G

      • Thnx mate, my old Dyson v8 vacuum died last week, so this was a perfect timing!

  • +2

Difference between this and V15 detect absolute?

    • Not 100% sure but if I recall correctly one of the biggest is a button to switch on vs a trigger that can't be locked without a modification

    • My understanding is that it's NOT called a V16 because all the Vxx are based on the older Gen4 motor. The fact that it is an all new motor Gen5 is the most significant difference
I have had a couple of Dysons over many years. The Gen5 in my opinion is the biggest step up of all of them. It's brilliant.

"The latest model from Dyson the Gen5 Detect. Moving away from the naming system that produced the V6, V7, V8 through to the V15 models of recent years, the new name indicates a new-generation electric motor powering this stick vacuum.
Smaller, faster and more powerful than previous models, the Gen5 motor spins nine times faster than a Formula 1 engine - up to 135,000rpm.
More importantly, the new model features particle detection down to as small as 0.1 microns, and the filter traps 99.99 per cent of harmful particles right down to that tiny size."

      • +11

"the Gen5 motor spins nine times faster than a Formula 1 engine"

        Lol what absolute marketing tripe

          • +1

            @hack: No

            • +1

@Mike Nolan: @Mike Nolan, I agree with you my friend.

It is an awkward marketing spin by the @hack…. WTF "the Gen5 motor spins nine times faster than a Formula 1 engine"… give me a break

      • +5

Thanks, however the marketing still doesn't say how the Gen5 motor differs from the V15 with objective specs and meaningful results.

        • Information only. Make your own decision

          https://www.wired.com/gallery/best-dyson-vacuums/#:~:text=Th…

"This is Dyson's newest top-of-the-line cordless vacuum. It's not all that different from the V15 Detect, but there are a few new notable features. The Gen5 Detect has a single power button instead of a trigger, a built-in dusting and crevice tool (my favorite since I use that tool often), and a Laser Slim Fluffy cleaner head that shoots out a laser twice as bright as the one on the V15 Detect. It has a run time of up to 70 minutes (and takes up to 4.5 hours to fully charge), so you'll get 10 more minutes than with the V15 Detect.

Internally, Dyson added a HEPA filter the company claims traps 99.99 percent of particles down to 0.1 microns. The company also says the Gen5 comes equipped with its fastest motor yet—spinning at 135,000 revolutions per minute (RPM) with a suction power of 262 air watts (AW). The V15 Detect, on the other hand, spins at 125,000 RPM, delivering 240 AW of suction power. While we didn't see a major difference in suction while vacuuming, it's worth noting the Gen5 Detect is noticeably louder than the V15"

          • -5

@hack: Mr @hack, Except your handle name, is awkward. You seem like an awkward spinner to claim that "the Gen5 motor spins nine times faster than a Formula 1 engine"… Nevertheless, it resembles our former prime minister. Your footsteps following ScoMo is going to land you as a prime minister one day.

Just like Donald Trump, you have a problem when people question common sense. That is why you got annoyed with @Mike Nolan

Shame on Dyson for having their marketing guy infiltrate a bargain forum. Ozbargain is free and aims to help everyday Australians minimise their cost of living.

        • +1

They aren’t going to share the intimate design details, beyond the changes that the suction in gen5 is up to 262AW (or 280AW on Gen5 Outsize) vs the 250AW on the V15. The only other significant difference they note is that it’s a motor redesign to include a heatsink due to the new motor being more power hungry at the boost power levels. Unfortunately Dyson acts similarly to Apple, providing only basic information that they think will help users compare their machines (against each other). Hence the need for independent testing and teardowns

      • Well there is no limit to how many Gen5 you can buy. Keep buying Gen 5….

    • I posted in the forum with a comprehensive table comparing all models of the Dyson range.
      High notes:
      -button instead of trigger
      -Gen5 is heavier
-Gen5 has higher suction (with non-motorised tools attached, same with the floor heads attached).
-All models of Gen5 come with the HEPA filter

The Gen 5 also used to have a 2X brighter light on the fluffy optic head but that's now filtered down to the V15 as well.

  • Has anyone here gone up from a V11 to the Gen5 Detect? Thoughts?

    • +2

Was Thinking of the same. I convinced myself not to spend the big bucks and stay put with the v11

      • Our V11 keeps telling us it needs a new filter, even though we've got a few that we cycle through and consistently wash. Finding a LOT of dust come out of the filter far too quickly, so thinking there might be something more sinister going on. We've had it for 5 years so I'm considering YOLOing the upgrade.

        • +2

We had a similar issue and found it was due to the 1000s of holes in the metal core the filter goes over getting clogged up. Was made worse or even started due to the Mrs wiping it with a wet cloth. Need to pop it open and give it a good clean out and it will work like new.

          • @StingyDave: which metal core? you mean where the bin is?

            • @viper8548: Yeah, sorry, where the bin is. Unfortunately needs to be cleaned from the inside.

          • @StingyDave: Yeah I’m thinking I’d like to get a couple new filters for it and give it a thorough clean by pulling that bad boy apart. I’ve gotta commit the time though.

A few of the heads are also deteriorating a little, so was almost thinking it would be nice to just get the whole kit renewed, whilst also getting a small upgrade on features and fresh batteries.

      • +1

V11 is a great machine, no need to upgrade (especially if you have a V11 Absolute with the click-in battery, which has a higher 220AW suction vs the 185AW of the original (screwed in battery V11) and the newer V11 (2023 onward) range.)
Keep the V11 and buy the better floor heads from Dyson if you want to freshen the machine up with the anti tangle head and/or illuminated fluffy head

  • Where do we get the Perks code from sorry?

    • It is emailed to you if are a perks member. Check junk mail

Just bought one c’n’c and stacked with TNC party gc for 20xWW points =$80 off next shop. Tedious work with only $20 per transfer to online jb cards to be prepared for 40 transactions. Could have done more but limit is 10 cards per account and we only have 2 ww accounts.
    In total $800 for vacuum.

  • -2

I have 2x v10s around the house, convince me to upgrade to gen5 detect?

    • +4

I can convince you not to if you want.

Why would you want to spend money on something as boring as a vacuum if you already have 2 that are still working? Buy something cool.

      I'm still rolling with 2xV6's

  • Was think of upgrading from a V11 and buy this but on researching saw complaints such as this.
    Now not so sure

    • +1

I haven’t watched this review but I have one and I don’t like it - it’s way too heavy. I don’t really notice much difference in the cleaning.

      • Thanks. I think we'd really notice and not like extra weight, so will not bite on this deal.

Compared to V11, seems heavier and louder for not much benefit.

  • how long before you get the 10% discount code? I joined perks but not sure how you get the discount code? I only received the $10 welcome discount?

    • don't worry. i got it. it was in my junk mail. for some reason the $10 off went through to normal inbox but the 10% off one went into junk. strange.

  • I have a V6 that's starting to show its age… Not in the financial position to get Gen5 or V15. Any suggestions for alternate brands that have excellent 'sucking'? (Thinking 3-400$ range)

    Thanks!

  • OB's favourite vacuum

Viomi A9 has entered the chat

  • Is this worth upgrading from V6?

    • +1

      I upgraded V6 > V8 > V10 > Gen5 over the years, was worth it each time for me.
From V6 to Gen5, the differences should be night and day.

      • Big difference in form factor moving from V6/V8 to V10 and now Gen5.

When we got the V11 felt heavy, big and clunky but now used to it.
Wouldn't want it to be heavier again as the Gen5 is.

        • +1

Noting also with the Gen5, it has push button power so it is easier to fully hold the vacuum, instead of pulling the trigger and hold the vacuum at the same time like the previous V series (except V12 which has push button).

        • The Gen 5's lack of trigger makes it feel similar to V11 for floor cleaning. Ideally Dyson would bring out a V12 version with the 540ml capacity of the V8 as that'd be a real sweet spot for people wanting a lighter unit

  • Bought gen5detect and regret it. It's too heavy compared to V8, V12.
Be prepared to-do all the vacuuming when your misses refuses to use this because of the weight ^_^
Best all rounder imo is the Dyson v12 detect slim - lightweight, push button and powerful.

Before buying one of these units I would highly recommend people goto JBhifi, Harvey Norman where they showcase all the sticks, you can test them to see how heavy they are.

    • your wife has weak hands, get her a gym membership or give her a forearm workout, you should know what im talkin about there

  • FYI this model is 975 at MYER,you can price match in JB first and then use the 10% coupon.

    • I tried price match via JB online, but it won't let me use the 10% coupon

      • I did that in their store, no issue at all.

  • I am looking to Purchase this, But I only got the $10 off code. How can you get 10% off.

  • is this top of the line or is there something higher?

    • Model wise, it is the top of Dyson cordless. There are variants like Outsize with bigger bin and battery, or packaging like Absolute and Complete.

  • I purchased it and have nothing but good things to say about it. The amount of dirt it is sucking up is amazing, so much more than our 10 year old Miele Cat and Dog. It is working fine on our carpets.

  • So does anyone have a link to a compatible free standing stand for this vacuum and it's attachments?

  • Has anyone got mop attachment recommendations for this vaccum?
