Holy moly, GPUs are this expensive now. Last purchase was in 2020, is this for good 4k gaming?

    • +2

      This is good for fortnite

      • +15

Performance has definitely made major improvements since your 1070. You must be playing older or less demanding games to find it acceptable for 4K gaming

        I agree it’s overpriced though

      • +2

        lol

      • +8

What are you playing? Solitaire? Chess? Minesweeper? I'm sorry, but 1070 is not enough for comfortable 4k gaming. The lowest details and below 30 FPS don't qualify.

      • +1

Squidwards voice: Sir, we play AAA titles here

      • +3

        1070 @ 4k most games loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool

most games from the early 90's

        • +6

Its time to kick ass and chew bubblegum…and i'm all outta gum.

      • +1

I can smell the bs from a mile away.

Got a 4090 and can't run every game at 4k.

And I had a 1080TI… There is no WAY that thing could handle even a basic game at 4k.

      • I doubt you can, I have a 1060 and it can barely handle anything without shitting the bed. Even a 1080ti would be barely running new titles

    • +9

If you think this is expensive wait for the 5090 to come out.

      • +1

Who is buying this? Like i guess Nvidia doesn't really care anymore since their AI gpus are selling much better.

      • -1

or wait till 9090 to come out, later….

    • Holy moly, GPUs are this expensive now

my thought too, I've been out of the game for a long time

probably still doesn't run crysis though lol

  • +3

This or a soon to be PS5 pro + OLED monitor (And change for a zinger combo)? GPU prices are absolutely cooked my brothers

    • +3

      Depends on use case!

PCs can be used for other applications but if just for gaming and don't mind the subscriptions (if playing online), then gaming platforms like Xbox and PlayStation work out to be cost effective.

These graphic cards are top of the game and soon to be out done by the 50series. I would rather wait now then spend on these models.

Won't be surprised if PS5 pro turns out to be over a $1000 though.

      • Yeah but a $90 usff can do most of those things too mate.

And fair with the online fees… but thats only for games that aren't free to play.. So Warzone, Overwatch, Rocket, Fortnite, Roblox etc.. all free. Which are a massive chunk of Sony's online base.

      • +1

I'd say gaming console has always been cost effective choices and probably the best experience for the majority of players. If my PC is not being used for other purposes, I won't hesitate to get rid of it as I enjoy "playing" way more on my consoles. But have to admit counting pixels on AAA titles on maxed out graphics settings is enjoyable on its own term.

Everything can become cheaper at scale.

    • +3

      PC for sure, no brainer.

    • -2

I have ps5 slim, paid roughly $750 for it, played and finished various games on it and i was very impressed at performance and graphics for the price.

Later upgraded my computer to 70800x3d+4080 build for about $3k and games maxed out mostly barely look better compared to ps5 unless directly side by side, anyway cant justify price difference just for gaming.

Honestly with these ridiculous prices for gpu, ps5 is my recommendation and dont bother with pc gaming unless you have plentiful of money and dont mind cost/performance ratio. Also if you are doing AI stuff too then PC makes sense, else stick to ps5.

      • +5

PC comes out ahead if you dont have to pay for $100+ games or subscription, that adds up real quick.

        • -2

I've never once paid $100 for a game ever since PS1. Games that cost me over $100 are some limited editions but those easily worth a few hundred on Ebay now.

          • +2

@plmko: I've never bought a console game in my life, but standard release price seems like $109-129 now for PS5, just browsing Amazon or even official PS store. Sure if you want to wait 5 years or something. But standard edition release prices seem super high now + Australia tax + inflation excuse.

            • @Kommodore: Are your parents still buying you games? 😂

Old ps5 cracked, free games is another option.

Pc is best for performance no doubt but I found it not as comfortable to play games, it's rare to be seated on a couch with a controller. Unless it's a fps game.

Also why would someone buy such a monster of graphic card where you can get pretty close using Dlss with a much cheaper rtx card such as rtx 2080?

None of the 4070 Supers included, lame.

    • +3

Because those won't be replaced with the 5000 series for at least 12 months

  • +8

Basically zero movement on the price of the 4090 in 2 years. Really hope Intel or AMD can give Nvidia some real competition soon otherwise the future of PC gaming looks bleak. With the much higher profit margins and crazy demand for GPUs used for AI, even a dry-up in demand due to high prices won't bother Nvidia at all.

    • +21

There has been movement on the 4090 price. It's gotten more expensive since launch.

      • +2

It's not a great deal (especially since 5090 is on horizon), but if I remember correctly, the launch prices were higher, about 3.3k for 4090 TUF Gaming OC.

The price had dropped since launch but jumped up again as a cheap alternative for ones who can't afford or can't get H100 for $30k+ USD.

    • +5

Meh future is bleak anyways, all the games are just subscription loot box cash cows for people with no attention spans with a side of AI generated garbage.

Indie scene is great still and like half the games are 2D that can run on integrated graphics. I cant name one killer AAA game I need high end hardware for. I have a 4070 Ti and I been mostly playing mods for 1994 Doom 2 lol.

      • +1

Im back on a 1080 for that exact reason. Sold my 3080 for top dollar and then picked up some $100 1080.

  • +9

Do they offer mortgage on Graphics Cards?

    • +3

Very hot, very loud, prone to unexpected crashing.
      2/10 wouldn't live here again.

      • Yeah, high risk, no negative gearing, high maintenance asset prone to be cheaper in long term. Hardly tax deductible.

    • They offer payment in kidneys.

      • +3

Nah, that's CPUs. Intel makes it obvious by putting a "K" at the end if you can buy it with kidneys.

        • +3

          I miss my old 2500K.
          And my kidney.

  • -1

Word of caution, these need a bit of juice and straight connectors not the splitty PCIE cables like you can get away with for even 3080 TIs.
I thought I'd upgrade my 3080 and ended up paying another $400 for a new PSU and labour (sorry too lazy and cable management skills too low to replace the PSU myself).

    • can get cheap PSU's on marketplace.. I got a RM650x for $50 with a full set of cable mod cables.

  • +4

Whoever's spending 2.5K on a video card is either a compulsive gaming addict or way more successful than I’ll ever be.
Either way , good luck to you.

    • +2

I paid $2,300 for a 4090 last year and never regretted it. Buying what you really want upfront is the best way to save money instead of constantly thinking about upgrades and feeling regretful.

    • It sounded like a lot to me at first as well but then I broke it down and I'm really getting a new GPU for like $500.
      Sell the 3080ti for $800-$1000
Tax deduction for the new 4080s $600
So I'm out $200-$500 of actual money… I've spent more on a night out.

      • how are you tax deducting 4080s?

        • +4

We just bought a few 4080Super cards to put in our workstations for film restoration work, so I imagine there are plenty of businesses that can justify a CUDA GPU.

      • +4

        That's a hell of a night out.

  • +3

If anyone is interested this zotac isn't the little 307mm variant this one is actually one of the biggest 4080 supers. But it's rated very highly.

  • +2

Waited so long for 4090 price movements… been tempted a year ago, but with 5000 series on the way, nah.

    • Agreed, though if it got under $2000 I'd be tempted. 5090 will probably cost even more unless Intel or AMD come up with something vaguely competitive, but it seems prudent to wait and see how it all shakes out.

      • There is no need to wait, the technology available is already known. Competition at this level won't exist in the next generation.

Which means Nvidia will continue to release mid range GPUs with low levels of RAM to avoid cannibalising their $3000 5090 while competing with AMD/Intel.

  • +1

Got screwed $1400 on a RTX4070TI with only 12GB VRAM. Now they have Supers with 16GB for same pice. Not getting screwed paying top dollar for card that will be beaten by a 5000 series in less than 6 months

    • +1

If it can be beaten on paper it doesn't mean it will be available in your local store at that time and price.

  • Is 4090 enough for 720p Skyrim?

    • Na, gotta wait for the 5000 series for that. It’ll only run at 570p
