Last minute bargains to get some sweet European summertime vibes.
Fares are on China Southern, via Guangzhou - most stops are relatively short (1 - 6 hours) but there are some dates/routes with a long stop in one direction. Not many dates for Rome, more for Amsterdam.
Date are second half of July and August 2024. 2 x 23kg checked bags included.
FYI I just got back from Europe and flew China Southern, no complaints.

Melbourne to Rome $1108
Melbourne to Amsterdam $1136
Sydney to Amsterdam $1159
Sydney to Rome $1131

  • Much better off with the cathay deal for the same price if you can nab that

    • +3

      why?

      • +6

Because Cathay Pacific is a more premium airline.

        • -3

          says?

            @belongsinforums: Skytrax ranking.. 5th and 31st.
Plus I’d rather a connection in Hong Kong airport.

            • @Save 50 Cent: Thanks. Haven't flown Cathay but a friend had a bad experience with a long delay on Cathay in HK and that has put me off a bit

              • @belongsinforums: Delays happen all the time with all airlines.
I’d consider how they handled the passengers after the delay not the delay itself.. it also highly depends on the cause of the delay.. weather? Pilot overslept? Airport stuffed something up?

          • @belongsinforums: ratings, feedbacks

I think China southern is better. the Planes are better, and seating is better as they do 3-3-3 config in most planes and the Guangzhou airport is less crowded.

          • @MQK: Yea. Had a delay with virgin and they ended up putting my bags on another flight so double delay. Have avoided ever since

    Awesome deal

China Southern has better service and quality than most airlines, including Cathay.

Agree, have flown both recently in the last year and would overall rate China Southern as the better airline

I'm currently in Europe having used China Southern. They are truly rubbish. They cancelled my flight on the way back and were extremely unhelpful whilst I looked at my options to find a way to get back. They're probably fine if you don't have any issues, but as soon as you have an issue, they're rubbish. I actually gave them another go (I previously flew them more than a decade ago) after positive words on OzBargain, but NEVER again.

I concur China Southern along with BYD and the CCP can get stufd… Cathay is heaps better IMO

      • Yeah. Don’t get me wrong, I have eventually sorted it out but the thing you want on holiday is quick efficient service so that you can go back to enjoying your holiday.

        • Did they gave any reason for cancellation and provided any options?

I'm flying China Southern for the first time next week MEL-xCAN-FCO. I heard you can call 48 hours before to request paid upgrade to premium economy.

It was about this price, $590 one way IIRC

  • I am sure the airline has been around for some time, but it seems that they have really only come to light in the last couple of years.
Admittedly, I would be a little hesitant to book with China Southern - less known than the more common Middle Eastern carriers and a layover in China is quite unknown to many people, but it's great to see these deals and hear stories of just how perfectly acceptable this airline is.

Reading about the full experience, it seems that the biggest letdown with China Southern is the awkwardly timed layovers and airport experience. Otherwise, big up to China Southern for bringing these deals!

I'd happily fly China Southern again, everything to do with the actual flight was great.

Guangzhou airport is gigantic and empty. The food choices are pretty limited (although I think the food court was hidden away- we got quite lost tbh)

And waiting for the 24hour Visa in the airport took a few hours which sucks.

However, for the price, I'd much rather pay $1100 than what Etihad etc charges. There is zero difference in the air.

Flew with China Southern a few times with layover at Guangzhou. Super nice experience. They use very new A350 for BNE-CAN. CAN airport is also very nice. A huge airport but the connection experience was very smooth. I also got the ticket for a fairly cheap price directly from their own website. I'd recommend.

  • Is July/august a good time to go to Europe? I’ve heard crowds are crazy due to their summer holidays.
