Free Upgrade from nbn FTTC to FTTP (Min FTTP Speed for Free Upgrade: 100/20 Mbps, Was 250/25) @ nbn Co via Participating ISPs

1460

The minimum speed to swap from nbn FTTC to FTTP is now 100/20 (was 250/25). 100/20 for FTTC to FTTP is now the same minimum speed as FTTN to FTTP. You can get 100/20 for $65-$75/month.

Most of the FTTC network can swap to FTTP with a $0 install. Check your address here. If you get this message you are eligible for FTTP;

It’s here! nbn full fibre is now available.
Make the jump to near gigabit speeds# by ordering a full fibre connection on Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) with an eligible plan^.

Contact a participating ISP to organize the FTTC to FTTP changeover. Not all ISPs have updated their online checkout so you might have to call up.

Can I order a faster speed plan?

Faster speeds can be ordered.

100/40, Home Superfast (250/25) and Home Ultrafast (1000/50) | 250/100, 500/200 and 1000/400.

Is nbn FTTP installed automatically?

No you have to order nbn FTTP 100/20 or faster speed tier from a participating ISP.

What is the nbn NTD?

The nbn NTD is a fibre Network Termination Device that gets wall mounted inside your home and plugs into the WAN port on your router.

What do I do with the nbn FTTC NCD modem after I have swapped to nbn FTTP?

Get a free return shipping label from Australia Post.

Do I need a new router for nbn FTTP?

It is unlikely that you need to purchase a new router for 100/20 and 250/25.

To get the best results for 1000/50 you most likely need to purchase a new router. A router with a Gigabit WAN port alone is not enough to max out 1000/50. Ethernet cabling gives you the most consistent speeds. For the best Wi-Fi speeds you want the router, computer, mobile phone and so on to have Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7. Dong Knows Tech has many router reviews with Gigabit and 2.5G speedtest graphs.

What happens if I want to stay on nbn FTTC?

Nothing changes for now and you continue to use FTTC as normal.

Will they have 100/40 on FTTP?
    Thanks

    • +5

FTTP 100/40 is available from Leaptel, Launtel, Superloop, Exetel, Swoop, Aussie Broadband and More Telecom.

      • I chatted to More last week, they refused to provide me 100/40 on FTTP :(

        • They stuffed up. I just checked and More have 100/40 listed as Fast Plus.

          • -1

@Twix: Yes, that Fast Plus was there, but they said it's only for FTTC.
My place has no FTTC connector (some renovation removed the copper line).

@Averell: Speak to someone else or signup online.

              • +2

@Twix: yes, I signed up for that 100/40 online, and they gave FTTC.
The other salesperson told me the same - they only tried to sell 650/40 to me, which costs 35% more.

I ended up going with Leaptel 250/20, because I felt fed-up with those nonsense things that those salespersons told me

                • +1

@Averell: Yeah Leaptel support is much better.

    • Will they have 100/40 on FTTP?

      100/20 will be 500/50 soon…

When will HFC connections be upgraded ?

    • +5

One day. nbn need to decide if they go from DOCSIS 3.1 to 4 for HFC or swap from HFC to XGS PON FTTP.

By 2028, depending on the need for a multi-gig product, NBN said it will need to make a decision on Docsis 4.0 deployment. By deploying DAA, the operator also gives itself options to deploy XGS-PON.

      https://www.telecompaper.com/news/nbn-co-reveals-upgrade-pat…

      • nbn need to decide

4 more years of 'thinking' ???

        • Maybe. I guess 2026 at the earliest.

          • @Twix: I hope its earlier!!!

            • +1

@italianganga: Me too but I doubt it. FTTN to FTTP and FTTC to FTTP have priority.

              1. Most of FTTC can swap to FTTP now.
              2. Most of FTTN will be able to swap to FTTP by Dec 2025.
              3. There is an estimated 600,000 FTTN homes that don't have a FTTP date.
              4. There will be FTTN and FTTC homes where FTTP was delayed.
              5. nbn have proposed 1000/100 and 2000/100 for HFC.

Only time will tell if nbn completes point 3 and 4 and potentially starts HFC to FTTP in 2026.

              • @Twix: Some good data there, If only they looked at the age of HFC and the fact there has been no physical updates like FTTN, obviously HFC has its speed advantages over FTTN but man are we so far behind other countries!! Fingers crossed they will look at upgrading HFC to FTTP in line with all other connections

        FFS, dont go dogshit 4.0.

Cut us the pain and go FTTP. We have suffered long enough all these years.

  • +8

The absolute BS over not getting the free upgrade for HFC to FTTP is bonkers. Thanks LNP.

      • Subs are more important than fast internet :P

        • Apparently…

        • +1

Even without considering the subs. The previous mismanagement of the NBN rollout. We could've finished the FTTP rollout for far less.

They should make an exception for jv

        • Why exactly are you voting them down? They’re not wrong…Yes, LNP decided to keep the old Telstra Cable network and turn it into HFC NBN…But it’s under Labor’s leadership that the decision to not include HFC in the FTTP upgrade has been made…

          • +1

@PainToad: What are YOU on about? The issue wouldn't even have existed if LNP had done the right thing from the beginning.

Somehow, you have twisted it to say it's Labor's fault. Gaslighting at its finest.

              That’s exactly what I said.

Somehow, you have twisted it to say it's Labor's fault.

LNP’s fault for creating the problem. Labor’s for not including HFC in the process to fix the problem (but at least they’re fixing FTTN/C)..

              Gaslighting at its finest.

Stating facts you don’t like hearing isn’t gaslighting. Try not to be so partisan and look at things factually.

  • Need an upgrade from the multiple dropouts and not fit for purpose NBN HFC…

Did this with Telstra, was an absolute cluster, spent hours on their chat app trying to sort it out and made 3 seperate complaints. Not worth it for me.

    • +3

      Don't use Telstra then…

They and Boost have the absolute worst customer service.

      • +1

Nah superloop makes them look good.

        • Maybe in some alternate universe, you 'might' be right…

          • -1

@jv: I guess you stumbled into my universe then, telstra rate higher than optus and optus is way better than superloop.
Dont take my word for it though, they have some good deals, sign up with them and see.

            • @Spendmore:

sign up with them and see.

I was with them before More Telecom, and never had any issues.

              • @jv: Yes they used to be good and i was looking forward to trying them, apparently they were bought out or merged with someone and the service went downhill. Even now they are apparently pretty good if everything is working but once it doesnt it is painful, I would say personally the worst support I have had from any company not just an ISP.

                • +1

                  @Spendmore:

apparently they were bought out or merged with someone and the service went downhill

                  Probably Telstra then…..

                  • -1

@jv: Haha maybe, that would be a crappyloop then!

      • That was literally the point of my post champ

    • Did you get FTTP in the end?

      • +1

Yes. Works fine now it’s connected. But the hassle was extreme.

  • +2

Did FTTC to FTTP last August. Used my old Sagemcom F@ST 5366 LTE from the FTTC install in 2020.

With optus for $129 per month. Approx 950/47 on ethernet and 550/47 Mbps on wifi via Asus RT5300

  • +1

Thank you SO much for sharing.

You’ve just saved me $168 over 12 months!

  • Is the Min speed for free upgrade from fttc to fttp 100/20?
Is that why telstra won't upgrade me for free as I'm on 100/17?

    • +3

Yep from today the FTTC to FTTP min speed is 100/20 (it was 250/25).

You can swap from FTTC 100/20 to FTTP 100/20. Telstra hasn't updated their website.

      • +1

        ok thank you very much

  • +1

Got the upgrade a while back but this is after I had to get an electrician out to run a conduit from the outside box to where the current router is - multiple NBN guys said they couldn't get it there.

Cost me $800 for get the sparky out for half a day's work. Unfortunately wasn't as 'free' as I thought it would be, but at least I'm future proofed now.

    • That's unfortunate. It's better than some that paid $2k to $70k for FTTP.

    • +1

Cost me $800 for get the sparky out for half a day's work

You could have installed your own conduit for less than $50.

      • +1

No, I couldn't have. I'm not handy enough to drill through walls, faff around on ladders and run cables through roof spaces and attics.

I would have totally ballsed it up.

        • +1

          I'm not handy enough

So you paid the handy tax…

          • +2

@jv: I paid the incompetence tax.

My soft and supple office working hands haven't seen a day's manual labour in their life beyond doing the lawns.

            • @participant123xyz: NBN guy ran the cable through old HFC conduits and then through the wall to where we wanted the FTTP wall mount. Top marks.

No way self install. There's 40 years worth of dust above the ceiling plus evap ducts and heating ducts. I'm not skilled or agile enough for that either. Lucky our 40odd yo sparky had a fit, young apprentice to do the dirty work in the ceiling on a hot December day.

Sparky installed 6point patch panel where the wall mount is (& the previous FTTC outlet) and ran ethernet to 4 different points in the house. 2 for gaming pc's, one for tv/fetch and last for Gb Ethernet backbone to a 2nd WiFi router in another part of the house.

  • +1

Spare a thought for those of us stuck on sh*tty FTTN, with max 40M download so even FTTC would be a big step up! Hopefully coming to our suburb later this year or early next year though…

    • +1

You won't get FTTC. It's FTTP or nothing. Have you checked for an ETA on here?.

    • If you haven't already, you should check the NBN link. I'm on FTTN and was scheduled only last week to have it ready in my suburb December 2025. Checked the link, said it was ready to go and a 10 minute call with Aussie Broadband has me scheduled for the install in a weeks time! Fingers crossed you're in the same situation.

  • Wasn't this always free?

    • +2

Yep however from today the FTTC to FTTP min speed is 100/20 (it was 250/25). That means your plan can cost less to get FTTP.

  • -1

I upgraded from FTTC to FTTP recently while staying on the 50/20

  • So does it mean once you upgrade to FTTP, you cannot later downgrade to lower plans?
I'm currently on FTTC 25/10 and at the moment it's quite sufficient even with 5 people using it all the time. If I do go to higher plan, 50/20 would be more than enough.

    • Signup to 100/20 to get FTTP setup and swap to any speed tier after that. 25/10 with 5 people is pushing it.

  • -1

I have FTTH, can I upgrade!

  • You can get 100/20 for $65-$75/month

Can somebody link to an ISP that has this ongoing price? Every single one I've looked at is ~$90 per month after initial honeymoon rate is over.

  • "We are aiming for this to be available from September 2024, but with each area providing different construction hurdles, these dates may change."
Was August when I checked about six/nine months ago
    .

me on FTTN and complex (units) building owner wont upgrade building but increases rent every year " this is fine" meme. cries

    • FTTC too. If you're MDU tough luck if your strata doesn't want to upgrade the whole building.
