Auspost. Does Anyone Here Have Any Faith Left in These Clowns?

Rant time, and I do appreciate and commiserate when other members suffer the same incompetence from Auspost.

I also acknowledge not every Facility and Delivery Centre or driver are this Useless at their One Job.

Had a Mailbox item 'Delivered" yesterday, except the box was empty. Raised a 'Missing Item' report, and was told reliably by Karen from Auspost, she had spoken with all concerned and Tracking showed it was delivered into my Mailbox.

Well, it was by 09:00hrs this morning, but definitely was not there at delivery time… I saw the van drive off and checked 2 minutes later.

Part 2 of this Consignment… & check the Tracking Holiday Route below… laugh until you cry. Part 3 is going via God knows where, and when… even he doesn't know that.

Everyday I’m glad I live in an area where auspost is great. Never ask for signature. Always on time.

    • +8

Same here. I've had a few issues in the past but overall, they've been great where I live.

    • +5

Same. I live in a suburb of Perth and get a few parcels a week. Never have a problem.

    • +3

The problem with Auspost is all the changes they keep making.
New posties replacing old posties fed up with the changes and ever changing contractors replacing the regular parcel delivery drivers is whats creating the problems.
      As the old saying goes…
If it aint broken the don't fix it.

    • +2

I own a small business and send multiple parcels daily. I've only had 1 go missing and that was 6 years ago. They've been great in my experience. Very reliable.

    • +2

Same here. My local posties do a great job.

    • From all the shit I buy from here and aust post delivered never has one gone missing.

I am surprised the delivery drivers don't complain about me equally in this way as the guy who they have to deliver to 4 times a week and is never actually home.

  • +4

Does Anyone Here Have Any Faith Left in These Clowns?

Nope! Sadly there are not much alternatives…

    • Aramex? Lol.

      • +6

I have multiple CCTV videos of Aramex "attempting" delivery in a 17 story apartment complex. They walk to the number pad, take a picture of the parcel in front of the number pad and walk back to their van with the parcel without attempting delivery. All very odd. No other courier company does this.
Many residents complain about them attempting delivery saying they aren't home when they are lol.

      • thats like going from frying pan into the fire!

  • +2

    Everything is getting worse.

  • +14

    Try Aramex instead.
    Maybe not.

    • Bruh, Aramex needs to go….. Don't know why businesses still use them.

I ordered something, I was home, not even a knock or door bell, got the notification I wasn't home. I messaged Aramex I'll pick it up and they said yeah all good, wait for the text to pick up…. 1 week later, asked where it is. They said they are processing the pick up ticket. 2 weeks later…. RETURNED TO SENDER.

Told the sender to refund me asap and to stop using Aramex.

Also they have the audacity now to charge $5 for redelivery

  • +36

Never had an issue with Aus post personally. Have ordered and sent 100s of things.

    • +6

yeah something like a 5 issues out of 300 or so for me over the years

  • +18

My current Postie in Sydney is great. He knows me by name and always left my packages in a discrete spot when I'm not at home. In saying that I have also had terrible Auspost service in different suburbs in the past. YMMV greatly dependent on your local delivery staff.

    • +12

This is the part when you need to make friends with those who deliver to your house - I even have their numbers and they have mine and encourage them to call me for delivery issues.

      • +11

yep. my delivery guy walks doen the driveway and leaves the parcel away from the door and out of the rain and sun

i give him a box of chocolates each christmas

        • +6

Same here. He knows I have to get downstairs so waits, ir I answer him on my Ring app.

Always give him a Coles giftcard for Christmas. The one with Santa making deliveries 🌲

    • +1

The lady in the LPO even said our local drivers are - this is a direct quote - "total shit".

      • Which suburb?

  • No

  • -5

They are almost as reliable as Snail Crawl or Couriers? PuhLease!

  • +8

I’ve got a camera facing front balcony/gate. In busy delivery times or if it’s raining, Aus post just puts a missed delivery slip straight in the letterbox without attempting delivery. They couldn’t be bothered.
I then take time off work to go to the post office during the limited time they are open, bring up what happened and they just shrug and “say make a complaint online if you’ve got an issue.”

    • +3

Well that makes sense. The employee/franchisee behind the counter doesn't give a flying f#@k about the contractor delivery bozo. Why should they?

      • +1

Because its their damn job and they should do it!

        • +2

It's not their job, they work for a franchise not auspost, if you have an issue with corporate then bring it to corporate.

It's like complaining about the Uber app being glitchy to an Uber driver, crap-all they can do about it other than tell you where to go

      • You are entirely reich, just because you work for a criminal org handing out gold starts doesn't mean you are a bad person

    • +12

bring up what happened and they just shrug and “say make a complaint online if you’ve got an issue.”

That is the process, the staff member you spoke to doesn't 'manage' the person who didn't deliver it correctly, the post office also doesn't manage the person. So there isn't a over lot they can do for you.

Oddly I put a complaint in a few years ago about the postie leaving parcels on top of the mailbox, he actual got the complaint as he said something to me about it a few weeks later when I was outside. Oddly enough, since then that 'issue' has never happened again! So win!

I guess the point I was making is it seems the online complaints go somewhere.

      • +5

I've had one instance where one of my complaints I know reached the postie.
He left an $800 GPS sitting on my front porch which I assume got stolen.
The item was supposed to be signed for and if no one was there to sign for it, it was to be collected from the post office.
Post decided to sign for it for me, forged by signature.
I complained to AusPost and after threats of legal action they paid me out for it.
Postie gave me attitude a few days later and it was like he was expecting some sort of sympathy from me.
Dude don't sign for my parcels and do you damn job properly.

        • +3

The item was supposed to be signed for and if no one was there to sign for it, it was to be collected from the post office.
Post decided to sign for it for me, forged by signature.

Seems to be a common thing now to ignore the signature request, I've had parcels that auspost has emailed saying if I'm not home to sign for it, it will be carded. Parcel is left at the door even when I'm home!

Even had a simcard once that needed to have id sighted/signed for left at the door too!

Postie gave me attitude a few days later and it was like he was expecting some sort of sympathy from me.

Mine was a little bit like that too. Tried to pass it off and blame a relieving postie on the day. The truth is, they had been doing it most of summer and I finally got sick of it in winter when they left a parcel in the rain that would have fitted in the mailbox, or they could gasp leave it at the front door out of the weather.

But kinda good to see that the complaints flow through to the posties, not sure if the couriers are the same. I find I get the same postie for years at a time, but auspost couries change every few months. So if they are crap, you just wait a few months.

        • +3

Yes complaints reached our postie in my area. Our neighbourhood has a community facebook page - it became a popular topic that a lot of mail was going missing including bank cards, kids birthday cards with cash in them etc. Apparently not stolen from the mailbox as many boxes were locked and some have CCTV coverage of them. So, a bunch of people complained to AustPost and got fobbed off that it was not a common issue in the area, then it kept happening and they drew the attention to the list of people with missing mail on facebook so AustPost had to act…

Next thing we know, the postie is knocking on doors giving people who complained in the neighbourhood a spray / attitude as his integrity got questioned…. so unprofessional, various stay at home mums etc were scared of him. The complaint details must have been specifically past down to the postie with idenitification of who it was and where they lived.

          Not handled well at all.

        • I had my signature forged by postie on an expensive item too. Lucky I could prove I was at work at the time so the item miraculously was found.

    • At least they leave a slip for you. Not only do they not bother trying to deliver, they no longer leave a card where I am to "save paper". You're supposed to get a text or email, which only happens if you provided it to the seller and they input it correctly. About half the time my package doesn't show up (they won't leave at my property), and they don't tell me they attempted to deliver it. I have to track it down from the seller's messages. By now I've probably lost at least one thing I forgot I had ordered.

  • +1

If you think Auspost is bad wait tell you have a few dealings with StarTrack.

I remember spending the better part of 2 months trying to get them to deliver a monitor from Dell. They were saying that they couldn't get to the office, yet the front door was right by the road entrance, called them so many times, ended out having to drive about an hour round trip to the depot, but you can only do this during office hours. This happened twice.

They had the audacity to then tell me that if I'm picking up packages from the depot, that cargo has to be appropriately secured and my vehicle must have a complete partitioning baffle or cage if I have an open cab etc, and I must wear appropriate PPE boots.

The worst though is probably Fast Horse and Couriers Please, AliExpress and the like use them the most. They will often put your packages at other peoples houses and send you the photo. I then show their support photos of a successful delivery and ask them how it can be the right place if its an another house for the same address. Thankfully for the few times its happened I have actually been able to find where it was.

For the most part I think AusPost is one of the better at least in my area, although I still often have to pick up from the nearest outlet, at least they have more of them around.

Wait till you find out who owns star track 😂

      • It would be hard to miss the Auspost icon they've also had for the past decade or so.

Even though Australia Post owns StarTrack as a subsidiary, my understanding is they still operate somewhat independently at their core, StarTrack still operates like a separate entity, and have a more like a collaboration, but serve specific areas of freight courier and post.

        • Probably a bit more than 10 years since Aus post took on a majority share.

While they do operate as seperate entities they do share some resources and the same absolute garbage customer service skills.

      I got a bit scared.

        Why?

I mean why only "a bit"? lol

    • +4

Last week, ordered the same day as all the Auspost delivery above, and Amazon 'dropped' from 2 feet, my new Phone parcel,
at a motel up the road.

Go figure! Another called me, saying lost, and was only 2 homes away!

It must be me….all my fault…ha.

Ah good old Auspost, where they took a simply Express delivery SYD to MEL, and sent it to every state for the next 8 weeks.

Seller sent me another as they too gave up (was a replacement for a faulty item).

When it finally arrived I paid the seller again, still got the f**king spare too.

Does Anyone Here Have Any Faith Left in These Clowns?

    I do… My dog doesn't…

  • Believe it's something to do with an algorithm or perhaps scheduling of deliveries. In Gold Coast, had something sent to the Depot near me, sent to Brisbane, sent back to the depot, then finally to me.

When maximising profit is the main goal and everything else takes the back seat, so you have to underpay and over-work the little guy in order to line the pockets of the CEO (does he/she still get millions + bonuses, or they put a stop to that these days?), what could go wrong, eh? The customer will pay the ultimate price, no pun intended.

  • +8

Yes. 99.99999999% of things i send arrive in excellent condition and on time.

    • +4

      You've sent 10 billion packages?

  • +5

Our business sends about 1,000 packages and the same number of letter items yearly, and apart from (maybe) half a dozen or so deliveries that take longer than scheduled, all have been delivered.
Having said that, this week we have the first ever item, in 10 years, than a tracked letter has been officially "lost in transit".
Those performance stats would stack up pretty well for any industry.

  • +1

Been really good here. I've even had parcels delivered late evening and even on weekends!

Living in a regional area there is no effective alternative to Australia post.

Other couriers are very hit or miss (Usually miss) and courier depot is "conveniently" located about 1.5 hour return trip away. Similar there are no 7-eleven or similar non-auspost pickup locations anywhere within about a 1 hour return trip …

Many of the non Auspost couriers very much cherry pick.. only offering reasonable services in major metro areas

    • I enjoy that they typically don't notice you're outside their delivery area until they "attempt delivery" i.e. it spends all day touring around the CBD in a van before returning to base. It's as if the only time they actually check the address is when a driver picks it up… Cynically I assume this is because they can slug the shipper with a futile delivery charge while doing nothing.

  • +1

I’ve just had Auspost give my parcel the grand tour of Queensland, eventually getting to the correct destination too late to be useful. A one week delivery from Sydney took 3 weeks. FYI, I’m also on the sunny coast

  • +22

    Hey OP,

I worked for StarTrack for 8 months last year as a delivery driver and this is my opinion.

Auspost has lacked any significant investment in upgrading their IT infrastructure. The scanners we used were from 2014, incredibly glitchy and slow and very basic (They are zebra android phones that are locked to one app). The drivers scan the package and it just makes a list of addresses. It has no route optimisation, no customer info, no map and it is very difficult to change the order once they’ve been scanned in. You can see very basic information about the route of the package and it’s scanning history but that’s about it. One day on my run, the battery died and the scanner deleted all of the history half way through the run. I had to go back to all those customers and get them to resign all the packages. The software on the scanners is made by a company called E2Open. Basically, it’s really sh*t.

On the depot side of things, when a package is lost, they just send emails to depots which never end up getting responded to. There is no ticket system or anything, it all feels like the staff are just winging it with what they have, no procedure followed. The software that the depots use is completely command line based. There is no gui and it’s very difficult to use/learn.

In my opinion, it feels like Auspost had a legacy system, that instead of overhauling and modernising, they opted to just build everything on top of this old system and try and integrate what they can. Suffice to say it doesn’t work very well.

With your package being bounced around the country, this is why. Basically 99% of parcels are sorted manually by hand. If a depot receives a package that isn’t for their area, they chuck it into a cage which has a barcode on it. They scan the package and the barcode on the cage and that allocates that package to the cage. That cage waits at the depot all day, and then a night it’s loaded onto a truck and sent to another depot where the process repeats until it eventually gets to the correct delivery centre. Basically because they have manual sorting, and these posties are reading thousands of addresses, it’s pretty common for it to be put in the wrong cage. Also, when it arrives at the new depot, they just scan the cage barcode and they just unload it without scanning every parcel, this means that it’s very hard to track where a parcel has gone if it’s not in that cage.

The areas of the drivers stay the same each day. They know what packages are coming into the depot. But they have no system in place that optimises the routes, or sees that a parcel hasn’t been scanned despite it meant to be there. Basically I blame legacy infrastructure, lack of training (they buddy up a new postie for 1 day and then just send them on the road making them just figure it out) and outsourcing the work to contractors (ever wonder why they just card you and take it to the post office, it’s cause majority of parcels are delivered by contractors who get a flat fee per parcel, but they receive extra if they have to take it to the post office, so it’s in their best interest to card you, more money for them and they don’t care.)

The executives are too worried about image, carbon free delivery etc instead of fixing the obvious shortfalls of the business. They will continue to lose customers unless they sort their act out.

    • +3

Postie came here a few weeks ago, had a chat about the zebra phone thingy. Was funny how he said the phone has been in Auspost longer than he has been there. It was so slow, just to bring up the signature box.

      • +3

Considering how critical they are to the business, you would think they would be constantly updating them, but no!

    • +3

The more integral a system is (like post, tax, etc), the more unlikely it gets updated because it's a risky business to change technology, especially when it's going to be costly and need to be deployed to whole country. So in a way I guess I understand the hesitation of changing things from the business point of view even without looking at economic aspect of it, but at same time, things do need to be updated eventually anyway

    • Thanks bud, explains a lot.

The prices still increase, and StarTrac delivery here a few times over the last few years was just as hit n miss.

  • +1

I just pickup something from the post office because the post driver said delivered but nobody was home, Yeah neither of my two security camera pickup anything on the day of delivery. I can't really say they are shit if they stuff up one time but so many times they do make stupid mistakes like I keep picking up my parcels from my next door neighbor.

  • +1

Just got a package from Starbuy, when I asked the postie about signing for the package he said “I’ve already done it for you”.

  • +3

could be worse, I have had a few of the Amazon deliveries marked as delivered when they hadn't been anywhere near my house. Apparently they just enter it in as delivered to meet there targets or whatever and then deliver sometime later (yes I reported both occurrences as well).

For me the worst is Couriers Please, we actually informed a business we regularly get orders from we refuse to do business with them in future until they tell us they have changed couriers. Many deliveries, you could be home, front door wide open and they would drop a card in your letter box "sorry we missed you" and then you have to collect from a newsagent several suburbs away (when they eventually deposit it there).

    • I also had an Amazon delivery marked as Delivered, despite the fact that nobody rang the buzzer while I was home… it mysteriously appeared in my mailbox a few days later

  • What does their geotagged photo say?

That's the only thing you need to file a claim that they didn't deliver it to your address

    • The photos they always take, is at the mailbox, still only 100m away.

  • My parcel delivery driver is great. He signs for my stuff, and he can hide it behind the shrub next to the door.

If it's a super expensive delivery, I just leave a note saying, please make sure I sign for it, and that's the only time it goes to the post office.

I thought parcel lockers were safe, but apparently not. My complaint with AP below:

A very unusual situation today. The item was addressed to my parcel locker at XXXXX DC. It arrived Monday 17/6/24, but all lockers were full so I received notification to collect it from the counter. Today I went there to pick up the parcel and two other parcels which were in the locker. After picking up the two parcels that were in locker I went to the counter to pick up this parcel. The young Asian worker scanned the collection code on my app and set out to find it. He could not find it and then got his senior colleague to assist me. She scanned the code and could not find it either in the pick up area. She thought maybe it was put in the locker #2. I scanned my code but it was invalid. She then went into manual override for locker #2 and then we put in the tracking number into the machine. This also came up with nothing. I was still interacting with the worker while she went back inside to look again and check that the tracking for the parcels I had already collected were not mixed up somehow. I then noticed that the tracking for this item changing from ready for collection (with the QR code visible) to "DELIVERED" within the app, right in front of my eyes. How could this even happen? I was not given any item. The lady took my details so that another colleague could have a look for the item tomorrow, but I am mystified how the tracking could changed to "DELIVERED", when the item is still MISSING at this point?

    • +1

Followed up the day after as I had another parcel locker item to collect.

The colleague was there, looked up the tracking and it was "delivered" to another customer who had signed for it.

AP responded 2 days later with… after investigation the parcel was "incorrectly delivered" and to contact the seller so they can put in business claim with AP. The seller to their credit gave a prompt refund.

On Friday that week, I had to go to the DC again and had a chat with the initial lady I was dealing with. Initially, I had thought the parcel had been wrongly given to someone else, but the more likely scenario is that the 1st worker who was looking for the parcel did not clear my tracking number from their scanner (after he could not find the parcel) and then swapped with a 2nd worker to assist another customer. The other customer was given their correct parcel by the 1st worker but signed under my tracking number, and hence mine was marked as "DELIVERED".

I got home from the DC (5 min away) and received a call from the lady at the DC saying that they had found my parcel as it was labelled incorrectly and put on the collection shelf in the wrong spot eg. SMITH mislabel as MITH. Hallelujah!

    • Parcel lockers are s***. I ordered 6 items over a period of six weeks all to be sent to parcel lockers. Out of the six, only one is successful. The remaining 5 all got sent to post office for me to pick up. Which meant I had to go to work late or leave work early so that I was within their operating business hours to collect, 5 times! And post office even lost one of the package! Now, the parcel locker service has been discontinued because AusPost has physically removed them from that location. AusPost sucked.

  • Unfortunately our experience with AusPost has been abysmal:
    * Letters: would not place our letters inside our letterbox (including those containing credit cards/financially sensitive info) instead would just leave letters on top. We had photographic evidence and eventually had to beat them with the ombudsman stick to get them to do the most basic fundamental thing expected of a postie (letters inside letterbox).
    * Parcels: the "oh we missed you…" when we're home all day or "couldn't find a safe place" despite having 2 of 3 items under the same shipment/tracking number miraculously able to find a safe place on the same day.

  • No, I don't have any faith. I work with a guy who regularly gets parcels which take less than a week from overseas, then sits at Welshpool for several weeks.

Last delivery (within the last week) was from Startrack, we saw a card in our door in the afternoon… we were home the WHOLE day. (And no, we don't miss a door knocker as unfortunately our kids race to the door every time they hear it.)
(Yes, I know they are separate entity, but to me they both wreak of poor service.)

Another delivery I got a text msg saying respond with a N or Y if okay to leave safely at the door. I replied Y within 5 #@%)@ing minutes (yeah, I screenshotted it). I then got an auto response saying that sorry, I was late and the driver has already left with the parcel. It's not ideal, because the post office is literally 5 minutes away, but with all the traffic, about a 20-25mins commute (no joke).

It's why ebay is my last resort when finding stuff online, I just don't want to deal with Auspost.

  • +7

Today, literally 2 hours ago, I was standing in the front bedroom and watched the delivery guy put a card in my letterbox without even coming to the front door. I ran out after him and grabbed the package he hadn't even looked for in the back of his van, he said "oh sorry I didn't knock very hard I have a sore hand" (even though we have a smart doorbell) - when I told him I saw him not even bother to come up he just denied it calling me a liar. Then I told him I have CCTV recordings of his 'attempt' and he just drove off without saying a thing.

Glad you got the item in the end. Must of been some ping pong balls, game Granville vs Red Bank, Red Bank vs Chullora, then Red Bank vs Dandenong, then Red Bank vs Chullora again, Chullora wins… Chullora vs Strathfield… You finally won.

    • I've wanted to try to play with AusPost by buying something of no consequence and repeatedly changing the delivery address. Send it to Perth, a day before delivery change my mind and send it to an address in Queensland. A day before delivery switch it up and go back to Perth. Then to Melbourne, then to Darwin, then Sydney, then back to Perth, then to Melbourne, back to Perth, to Melbourne, up to Brisbane again, down to Hobart, to Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns (it deserves a nice getaway by now), over to Humpty Doo, off to Jerrabomberra, back to Perth, up to Broome, over to deepest Arnhem Land, down to Adelaide, zig-zag back up to Cairns for one more visit, then down the coast to its final destination.

    • That is hilarious.

    • Missorted to QLD. There can happen also if there is two labels on the box, if seller reusing the box from previous purchase.

      • Nope, only one label and it was perfectly legible. I thought perhaps they got the postcode wrong or something but there was absolutely no reason for it to get missorted.

Welcome to the Parcel Holiday Travel Club.

My experience with AusPost couriers, they drop all parcels at the local (for delivery) LPO and then the LPO staff log it, sort it into P.O. boxes or narrow slots or the larger parcel overflow area.

The LPO staff then "Card" the parcel for the postie to notify you that "we have it" for you.

On receipt of the card the customer then has to attend the LPO during operating hours to collect the non-delivered parcel.

    Need I continue?

If the courier actually delivered it, no LPO staff or the postie are involved, and the parcel is delivered as requested.

Faith in Auspost couriers? No. Not a scrap.

i refused to pick up the parcel once as it was taken to a non local LPO over 10 min drive away with no card so they obviously didn't even bother to make a local delivery.

I ended up telling them to return to sender as I was not able to pick up during work hrs and getting a refund on the purchase making it clear it was a delivery issue, no fault of the seller but they are the seller and customer and only their complaint gets any traction

I once had an Australia Post customer service person in their Gungahlin (Canberra) store spend the best part of an hour going through transactions on the till to find me the tracking number on a post I made a month earlier.

    Guy was an absolute legend….

Here is a link to the (well deserved) review I left them https://maps.app.goo.gl/EqxBZSvn5pBkCAGQ6

  • lost faith long time ago. staff at the LPO said the guy had a history of being lazy and actually encouraged me to make a complaint

  • The LPO's seem to be resorting to petty theft based on false claims, AusPost in general have long not been delivering articles and make false claims. I don't want to get rid of them as an organisation but they definitely need a near complete management and staff overhaul which is probably long overdue from the 90's.

According to their annual report, Auspost delivered 2.7 billion items in 2022. That's a average of 10.3 million items each day over 260 work days.

All in all they do pretty well, even if they get it wrong 0.001% of the time. Its the driver that's the problem in almost all cases.

We send items daily and have a contract with auspost. We've found the most difficult customers who are aggressive, irate and unreasonable tend to live in remote/rural towns like OP. Maybe its the rough and tough aussie way or just cranky old men who overreact to the smallest inconvenience.

    • I guess they can hit those numbers by just leaving a card instead of the actual item…

    • We are 100m from the Maroochydore border, not exactly rural let alone remote.
The Bli bli PO is 3 klm away, again, very local.
Nambour Depot is 10klm away, so again, we are all very local.
Paying for door to door delivery, Auspost accepting that Contract, and then not even attempting delivery….. has nothing to do with the customers situation, or location, or age.

Other couriers fulfill the delivery, and Auspost have in the past done so as well, so the standard is set.

    Auspost:
    Still working fine here.
Last thing Clown 'bo has not Karenized yet.

    Starlink: Karenized, fee nearly doubled.
    NBN? What a joke.
5G data speeds? Do not question.
The list could be long but lets get the Gerry lovers a reason to neg this…
