as opposed to slaves of capitalism?

That is an oxymoron. 'Capitalism' is just a free market, like what happens right here on Ozbargain all day every day. You choose to buy things at discount prices or you choose not to. It's entirely your choice. You cannot both be free and a slave at the same time.

            • +2

VW is literally a company that operated concentration camps. Yet people buy there stuff all the time,

Because they stopped running concentration camps a long time ago. That is an important distinction.

              • @1st-Amendment: Exactly. Modern Germany (and Japan) cannot be held responsible for the sins of their forefathers in the past. To not do so means we cannot move forward as a civilisation.

                • @R4: And same goes for everywhere. Complaining about Captain Cook or Christopher Columbus is just as unproductive. What is ironic is that it's the self-claimed 'progressives' that are always digging around in deep dark history to find things to complain about. You can't move forward if you're always looking backwards.

                  • +1

@1st-Amendment: Spot on. It's like all the nonsense about reparations for slavery. Nobody alive today owns or owned slaves in the Western hemisphere - and are not responsible for the actions of their forefathers. If we can't move on as a society over this kind of nonsense, we're f##ked.

Australia was going to be colonised by some country. End of. The country of choice to be colonised back then was Britain, so Australia got lucky. No amount of hang wringing or denialism can change that fact.

        • It's amazing how even if you flood the market with garbage for years people just respond to the price of your latest offerings.

No idea if the current generation is any good but I wouldn't chance it based on the past.

I checked this out at recent ev show and man the space availability at 2nd row is a joke… not only the leg space but even getting access to it was a nightmare. I’d rather they make this a 2 seater with more space for driver and passenger and add more batteries for range now that the weight of the 2nd row seats are available

what a steal, you just find it on carsales?

          • +7

@Jackson: Carsales. I'm on the Gold Coast. I was looking at a green one in Noosa for around the same price. I used it to haggle with a local dealer as it was too difficult to get up there. Basically not much over $110 p/w (not inc electricity) on a lease. It's as cheap as me keeping my 17-year-old banger on the road with its expensive fuel habit. It was a different class of car, though (v6 people mover). WIll put whatever money I get from it towards the residual. Hopefully, I will have worry-free motoring (cross fingers!!) for at least 5 years, plus I will still have 2 years of warranty after that.

Weighed up the cost of getting an ICE car and possibly improved much-improved resale (e.g. a Corolla) compared to the Ora. Sums still worked out for the Ora, at least on a lease.

Doing the sums, a ~$70k EV (FBT exempt) costs as much as a ~$40k ICE p/w, on a lease (excluding residual though and tax bracket etc)

            • @lowey71: Wow that’s a…bit of a change.

    • How long is a piece of string? Range is such a fuzzy term. NEDC? WLTP? Realistic year round average for the average trip? Realistic at highway speeds? Minimum in worst case weather?

For all the doom and gloom spread by people rubbishing EVs and their resale value, it is amazing that there aren't even any second hand ones that tick those boxes…

But then, perhaps buyers aren't as stupid as many think. The prospect of saving $10k on petrol over a few years makes even a $30k EV a steal.

      • For all the doom and gloom spread by people rubbishing EVs and their resale value, it is amazing that there aren't even any second hand ones that tick those boxes…

Depreciation is expressed a percentage, so even at 50%, to get a $25k used EV it would have to cost $50k new, and those didn't exist until only very recently. So give it time.

Give it a couple years and the market will be flooded with all the used Chinese EV's that are currently selling in the $30-40k range today. The question is, will there be enough buyers for them all?

        • Yes, there will be. Plenty of people who can't spend more than $20k on a car right now and would love to save $3k on their petrol bills every year.

Take my partner for example, she drives about 400 km a week, with no single day more than 120 km. Easy to do with any EV that isn't an old Nissan Leaf…

All it takes is the confidence that the car (and especially battery) will last another 5 years at a minimum, and an EV becomes the logical choice. I am quite confident that with current LFP batteries most of them will outlast the economic lifetime of the rest of the vehicle (i.e. get to 20 years with still more range remaining than my partner needs).

    • Got mine in Jan, BYD e6

    • For EOFY we picked up a standard range for $34585 and then less $6k rebate as QLD so that wasn't too far off. It would of been closer still had we gone for the base colour model.

  • +3

Saw this car the other day near Carnegie Shopping Centre with two tone Red/Black. Quite eye catching but I just can't justify $38,990 for such a small hatchback.

Also EV price is slowly but surely coming down. I'll probably stick with my gasoline cars for now until EV become genuinely affordable. Or most likely I'll get a HEV or PHEV for my next car if it's still going to cost 20k to replace the battery for EV.

    • +23

If you buy the right car (not an old Nissan Leaf) the chances of you needing to replace the battery before the rest of the car falling apart is virtually nil (especially if you go for an LFP battery).

Now PHEV is the dumbest choice of all. You are getting all the complexity of an ICE car with all the complexity of an EV shoved into one car. The moment you run out of EV only range you lug around a bunch of electric motors and a battery that don’t really do anything.

Conversely, driving on EV only, you are lugging around an internal combustion drivetrain and getting poor efficiency with the electricity you pull out of the battery.

On top of that, a PHEV needs all of the maintenance of an ICE car.

Once you drive an EV for a month (even with today’s charging infrastructure) you’ll wonder what all the fuss is about.

Oh and in resale value… no one is going to want your PHEV or Hybrid in 5-10 years time.

      • +1

"no one is going to want your PHEV or Hybrid in 5-10 years time."

Hybrids? well, they said the same about 10 years ago, proven to be quite the opposite.

        • +1

proven to be quite the opposite.

And if you look at VFACTS, Hybrid sales are up 70% while BEV is only up 10%.
It's clear who the winner is here.

      • +2

the chances of you needing to replace the battery before the rest of the car falling apart is virtually nil

It's not virtually nil. You only have to look at Car Sales EV ads to see it's not 'virtually nil'. It's a low risk, but it exists. And if it happens to you it is very expensive.

Now PHEV is the dumbest choice of all.

Wouldn't that depend on the use case?

You are getting all the complexity of an ICE car with all the complexity of an EV shoved into one car.

And in exchange for that you are are getting a power plant that gets the best of both worlds. EV for shorter trips, but no limit on range.

The moment you run out of EV only range you lug around a bunch of electric motors and a battery that don’t really do anything.

They do, they get charged by the ICE and then it runs just like a regular hybrid.

The benefit of EV only for quick trips to the shops, and hybrid for long trips is a better benefit IMO than be restricted on how far you can drive in an BEV.

        • +1

still, this is one of the reasons to go EV - no more ICE inside, which means much less moving parts and reduced complexity. means the EV is more reliable with less things to break.

Hybrid is worst of both worlds in this regard since you are getting ICE and electric components too, plus whatever smarts and components needed to make them harmoniously work together. yeah fuel savings are there, but complexity is increased, not reduced. means reliability suffers

and I sure wouldn't trust some backroad car manufacturer produced hybrid considering the above

      • Your Choice, Your Consequence😉 😉

      • -3

As opposed to ICE vehicles that are 20 times more likely to incinerate you?

You seem to have misread that report. 20x more likely to catch does not mean 20x more likely 'to incinerate you'.
Battery fires while less common are mostly spontaneous and far more catastrophic, especially if you are in it or in the same building when it randomly decides to go.

Petrol fires are not like the movies, it burns a lot slower and is far easier to put out. They are completely different risk profiles.

        • Having seen several petrol cars burn, I can tell you that the numerous safety mechanisms in every modern ICE vehicle are more than up to the task, even in horrific crashes fuel supply shuts down quite early on and the risk comes down to piercing of the fuel tank, or the inevitable result of an unhindered, slow burn which gives everyone time to get away.

Lithium Ion batteries OTOH, explode in cases of shorts and individual cell failure- and/or poor battery management systems. This makes them susceptible to many types of common use, eg. wading off road (safely), encountering flooding (very high chance of uncontrollable explosion/fire), for parking under residences, esp. high-rise buildings, and for leaving unattended, or to escape extreme weather events, etc.

I'm pretty sure that most PHEV/HEV/EV owners have little understanding of all these risks, or will be able to manage them in an emergency, such as an incoming cyclone, even with loads of notice.
