Best decision when it comes to GWM/Haval.

      • Excellent !

Actually GWM/HAVAL are the better of the chinese brands with their latest generation cars proving to be oddly reliable.

        • Oh is that way I see all these LDV utes and vans with a holes where the badge used to be because it's probably fallen off at some point?

          • +2

@rootk1t: Oh no that's because the badges are stolen ! Highly sought after you see

        • GWM are literally a PLA fam lol. NO.

          • @luke700: VW is literally a company that operated concentration camps. Yet people buy there stuff all the time, VW, Audi, Ducati etc etc.

I really want an EV that has like 350km range, no frills and costs 25-27K drive away. How far away is that realistically?

    • +5

      Before end of 2025 imo.

    • +35

      About $13,990-$11,990

    • Better to increase your budget/income by 50%….

I picked up a 'used' one for $30k, advised it was an unwanted prize just over 1 week ago. Had < 500kms
Great as a 2nd car around town!

        • +1

what a steal, you just find it on carsales?

          • +2

@Jackson: Carsales. I'm on the Gold Coast. I was looking at a green one in Noosa for around the same price. I used it to haggle with a local dealer as it was too difficult to get up there. Basically not much over $110 p/w (not inc electricity) on a lease. It's as cheap as me keeping my 17-year-old banger on the road with its expensive fuel habit. It was a different class of car, though (v6 people mover). WIll put whatever money I get from it towards the residual. Hopefully, I will have worry-free motoring (cross fingers!!) for at least 5 years, plus I will still have 2 years of warranty after that.

Weighed up the cost of getting an ICE car and possibly improved much-improved resale (e.g. a Corolla) compared to the Ora. Sums still worked out for the Ora, at least on a lease.

Doing the sums, a ~$70k EV (FBT exempt) costs as much as a ~$40k ICE p/w, on a lease (excluding residual though and tax bracket etc)

    • There were a few "new" (possibly ex-demo) 2022 mg zs models going for 31k a month ago. So not far off.

      • assuming in Qld, would that qualify for the $6,000 rebate?

    • +1

A base spec used mg4 should be there in 6-12 months if nothing else is.

    • How long is a piece of string? Range is such a fuzzy term. NEDC? WLTP? Realistic year round average for the average trip? Realistic at highway speeds? Minimum in worst case weather?

For all the doom and gloom spread by people rubbishing EVs and their resale value, it is amazing that there aren't even any second hand ones that tick those boxes…

But then, perhaps buyers aren't as stupid as many think. The prospect of saving $10k on petrol over a few years makes even a $30k EV a steal.

    • Got mine in Jan, BYD e6

    • How about one of these for a little more?

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WT7swFbkdV4

    • For EOFY we picked up a standard range for $34585 and then less $6k rebate as QLD so that wasn't too far off. It would of been closer still had we gone for the base colour model.

    • Mate, you're lucky to get a decent ICE for that price.

I like the name "Funky Cat" more than "Ora" tbh

    • Meow

    • Rita Ora :o

Me too I wish they had gone with that.

There is a green one running around my suburb with the number plate 'Funky Cat'

Hideous thing. No wonder it's being discounted.

      Lol what?
      Where'd you read that?

      It's not going anywhere.

      • +2

        I said discounted, not discontinued.

        • I'm definitely dyslexic

      • They said discounted, not discontinued. 👀

      • +2

        It's not going anywhere.

        Sounds about right 🧰🧑‍🔧

    • +3

I love the look of it. You could take the badges off and still recognise it unlike a lot of cars these days

      • From the front it looks like an Alfa Mito from 15 years ago. The Mito was never a popular car even in it's day, why would it's styling work 15 years later??

      • +2

I also love the look, I guess haters just gonna hate

  • +5

For that price for an EV, I'd rather get the BYD Dolphin or MG4.

$3,899 and we have a deal.

    • I take 10 pls

  • +1

Saw this car the other day near Carnegie Shopping Centre with two tone Red/Black. Quite eye catching but I just can't justify $38,990 for such a small hatchback.

Also EV price is slowly but surely coming down. I'll probably stick with my gasoline cars for now until EV become genuinely affordable. Or most likely I'll get a HEV or PHEV for my next car if it's still going to cost 20k to replace the battery for EV.

    • +13

If you buy the right car (not an old Nissan Leaf) the chances of you needing to replace the battery before the rest of the car falling apart is virtually nil (especially if you go for an LFP battery).

Now PHEV is the dumbest choice of all. You are getting all the complexity of an ICE car with all the complexity of an EV shoved into one car. The moment you run out of EV only range you lug around a bunch of electric motors and a battery that don’t really do anything.

Conversely, driving on EV only, you are lugging around an internal combustion drivetrain and getting poor efficiency with the electricity you pull out of the battery.

On top of that, a PHEV needs all of the maintenance of an ICE car.

Once you drive an EV for a month (even with today’s charging infrastructure) you’ll wonder what all the fuss is about.

Oh and in resale value… no one is going to want your PHEV or Hybrid in 5-10 years time.

  • Interesting that this came out after EOFY.

  • Get a VinFast, regards Pham Nhat Vuong

    • May as well pick up a North Korean Madusan as well.

    • At least VinFast are good enough to be sold in the US market. GWM will never be sold there.

      • You should read the reviews when they came out, terrible quality, even less quality than american made cars

        • That was only on the initial models, the first model year. Things have improved greatly on the current ones.

  • +1

    Weird looking 🚗

  • Good value if you have a solar roof and need to commute.

Can't stop thinking of Jojos Bizare Adventure when I see Ora

  • +3

I always feel Chinese cars never have any design cohesion. The front doesn't look too bad, but the rear seems like an afterthought.

BYDs are the same or the interiors are just plain tacky

  • +1

Test drove one earlier this year but it struggled transferring the little power it had to the road and had quite a lot of wheelspin. Maybe better tires would fix it, but who knows. And while small, it's fairly wide, so not even an advantage for tight parking lots

    • +3

My wife has one and has no trouble embarassing v8 hoons at the lights. She calls it her sleeper :-)

      • I hear they will feature in the next fast and furious. FF: recharged.

  • +1

it looks great I dunno what the ugly comments are on about. kind of like any other small car but a bit more stylish?

maybe the back looks a bit weird with the single line brake light but that's normal for all electric cars isn't it ? they want anyone driving behind to KNOW that it's an electric car.

    • +1

I recommended it to my wife 6 months ago when she was looking precisely because of the looks. It stands out from the crowd

      • +1

yeah but what I mean though is from a distance the general shape and front does look like many other small cars.

not sure why this one is so ugly.

if someone said "small cars are ugly" then I could understand it a bit better.

  • +3

This is one of the most advanced cars for females. It is designed for women. They love the tech and find it cute and also very fast. That is why in China, it's called a Good Cat car. In Western countries we call a Cat a Poosy. But the term (Poosy) also is a vulgar way of calling female genitalia so they changed the name to Ora. I hope this post has helped many people.

  • Jaymate reckons these are hotter than his 2005 Toyota Clown

  • The base model use LFP battery which is safer and less likely to catch fire, while the higher model actually use Ternary Lithium battery which have higher energy density but more dangerous to use in EV.

  • -5

    planned obsolescence…..sigh

  • apparently this model doesn't sell well in its domestic market and has been discontinued

  • $30K we talk

  • The name just begs the question - GWM Ora.. (insert almost any other car here)

  • who drives this thing?

    • People who buy this thing.

  • got EV Mercedes. I'll see myself out!

  • I just Googled it, and this car sells for only 20,000 AUD in China…

    • But you not in China

    • Considering the shipping cost, a 70x smaller population, their local subsidies, economies of scale etc, doesn't seem too unreasonable.

Not the only brand/car that costs more here than overseas…

    • Do you realise how much Vegemite costs in China?

  • get it below 30k and maybe we can discuss further.
The name of these and the BYDs reminds of some of the early Japanese efforts, like the Nissan Cedric, or Mitsubishi Starion.
