Need something cheap and cheerful to store my media when flying around for 6 weeks because I like big fat 2160p HDR files.

I like big files and I cannot lie. You other fellas can't deny.

There is a $10 coupon which brings it down from $47.97 to $37.97 which is unbeatable.

Update: Upon delivery of the item, it appears to be 100% genuine.

It is made of solid metal, pretty heavy.

I ran ValiDrive as suggested from a commenter, and it came back all green. Validated drive size of 503GB.

I then found a review of a SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Luxe 512GB Metal Pendrive ($69 today on Amazon). In crystaldisk mark, this gave 289 seq read (MB/s) and 70 seq write (MB/s).

My Generic drive has 115 seq read (MB/s) and 58 seq write (MB/s). I've started copying files at the max speed is 35 MB/s and it's going up and down all the way down to 5MB/s - it goes up and down every 30 seconds? Anyway, it says it will take 3 hours and 30 minutes to copy 353 GB.

I'm copying to a 512GB official Sandisk MicroSD card at the same time, via a USB 6 in1 removable media hub. To this one I am also copying big video files - about 307GB but it's going slower, at 21 MB/s but very stable no up and down. So it's going to take about 4 hours for that data.

Update #2: I have a new android tablet, Lenovo Xiaoxin 12.7 2024. I put the 512gb sandisk SD card in this (snapdragon 770) tablet and it is now blank because it said the SD was corrupted (exFat?)…. So I'm copying from the Generic USB in this deal to the SanDisk SD in the tablet. It is copying at speeds of 40 to 60 MB/s.

It does about 10GB in 3 minutes.

I plug this generic into my Galaxy Fold 3 and the Fold is copying/reading the files at 90MB/s. I plug it into my S21 and the S21 is copying files at 100 MB/s.

Mod Note: Purchase at your own risk, as these USB Flash Drive may have fake capacity.

    (Verse 1)
I don't got nothin' for them low-res clips
    Tiny videos with blurry lips
Give me somethin' high def, somethin' clear
    2160p, that's what I hold dear

    (Chorus)
I like big seeds, and I cannot lie
    The other peers can't deny
When a swarm jumps in with mighty size
And the download speeds just hypnotize

    (Verse 2)
    720p? Nah, that's just a tease
    Grainy pictures don't appease
Give me all the pixels, the color so bright
    HDR magic, makin' everything right

    • Pretty good man…👍

Cheap large size drives on eBay and Amazon are almost always fake. I wouldn't personally take the punt. If you do, make sure you test it with a flash test program so you can return it to Amazon if it's fake.

    • or make sure you copy 100G+ (xxx) videos into the drive and make sure all of the vids still play back properly….

to store my media when flying around for 6 weeks because I like big fat 2160p HDR files.

I seriously wouldn’t trust this to store any files I care about.

Best case it’s garbage quality that will fail at any point, or most likely it’s fake and is actually much smaller with a hacked firmware to make is present like it’s larger and will corrupt when it’s real storage is exceeded.

OP I’d be canceling your order.

Atleast this is more believable than the 24tb SSD for $80ish dollars from AliExpress from an Ozbargain post.

    • Seconding this, I bought this just last week. The capacity was genuine but after less than 48 hours it completely died and wouldn't show up at all. So now I have to drop it off at the post office to get a refund.

      • +2

A quick chat with Amazon, and they would have likely refunded you without returning.

        • +2

Really depends. Most of the time they want it returned if it's sold by a third party seller.

          • @ca6leguy: Yeah I've had to return the last two pieces of electronics (ram + hdd) that failed on me. They did pay the refund before I posted though

Op about to find his fat 2160p files clipped down to 100 mb as the drive loops onto itself

  • +4

Op, that usb looks fake as. I would be surprised if the actual capacity was >64gb.

Even if it had a known brand name, there are still a lot of fakes out there even if you purchase from Amazon etc.

Everyone please make sure you test all purchased sd cards and usb media using the relevant tools before storing data or using.

This url list various tools you can use to test and additional info about fake sd cards and usbs.

    • Not if it is sold by Amazon.

      • +1

If it's ship and sold by Amazon it's likely to be good. If it's sold by a 3rd party, whether fulfilled by Amazon or not, it's questionable. Been there, done that. A Samsung TF that comes with a shiny gold label with Chinese word "anti-fake" on the card itself in the sealed package, and the country of origin doesn't match the description and the photo of the listing on Amazon. That's an item sold by 3rd party fulfilled by Amazon.

      • Only going off Google and Amazon reviews but there are users that claim that they have been supplied a fake sold by Amazon.

        https://www.google.com.au/search?q=amazon+fake+sd+cards&sca_…

All my sd cards have been fine, but doesnt take long to do the basic test to check the card. Better safe then sorry.

That looks fake as I’m sure it’s not real

  • +2

This is a fake USB stick I can guarantee it

  • +4

    It's either fake or unreliable.
Data loss isn't a bargain, buy a patriot or lexar if you want good value.

  • +2

I wouldn't be inserting random no name USB drives into my devices.

Data is worth more to me than a product that is highly likely fake and/or unreliable. Why risk it?

  • +3

When you receive it, run something like this as a minimum to verify its size….then hope Amazon refunds you

  • Why is everyone down voting the comments that this is a bad idea? This isn't that cheap, you can get a 512GB Sandisk for $70. This is a silly thing to even suggest and not a deal at all. OP there's not always a deal in paying less. https://amzn.asia/d/04xjRBHH

Edit: adding another drive for $60.

  • Is it cake?? 😀🍰

    Soft drive…

  • Thanks, gonna store my graduation and wedding photos on these. Maybe even all my holiday photos with my parents too from way back when.

  • Blimey, if you care so little about your footage that you're willing to trust it to a fake drive like this, why bother taking the footage in the first place?

  • +1

I've got the SanDisk version of this and when you transfer large amounts of data (Eg. Videos from a phone) the damn thing gets hot and transfer speeds come to a crawl. Wouldn't want to think how this cheap thing would handle that

  • Same as unbranded condoms, leaving your descendants unprotected.

  • this is 100% fake 😂

  • I wouldn’t trust an unbranded usb drive to store my files
If you are within the Apple ecosystem there’s always iCloud to save them and can easily access anywhere too

  • Even if it is real the speed of the drive probably won’t be able to keep up with the bitrate of a good 2160p HDR movie

  • +1

    generic? thats the brand?

some random chinese company out there could have called it anything… maybe something fun like goldensunphoenixmaximumharvesteldestsondragonflysittingonalotusleaf-gongsi…but just said nah fk it - GENERIC.

  • Looks like it was drawn by AI and with one single positive 5* vote (but no review).

  • Legit 512GB USBs are around $60-$90. This is fake.

  • duh OP since 2008 and still fall on fake drives

Wow, is there an award for most down votes?

Lol, I am going to get it delivered anyway just to scan it and prove you all wrong ;)

    So stay tuned.

  • Likely fake capacity or low quality flash. Two things no one should have to deal with.

  • I've updated the listing after testing the drive and finding the storage is 100% genuine 512GB.
