Pixel 9's release on the 13th August (at least in the states). Price may drop further yet.

If only there was enough reason to upgrade to the P8 Pro from the P7 Pro.

    • Do you use a screen protector? I'm sick of having to use the uv light and the fiddeley process involved to put one on my 7 pro.

      • Yeah i do, but not a UV one.

Bought pixel 8 pro for half price cancellation HN deal and have got to say the phone is incredibly average for even having paid ~$840.

There are no stand out features to mention, the only one I can think of is the fact that it was like purchasing an old 2nd hand phone from marketplace or something with how short the battery life is. I constantly find myself looking for life support for it throughout my days.

Can't forget the fact that it overheats within half an hour in the sun - for example using maps while driving.

Terrible phone and nothing about it feels premium.

I'll be purchasing my first iPhone in my life when the 16 drops.

EDIT: Forgot the biggest one of all - 5G doesn't work whatsoever and will often disable network access completely. I use the phone with only 4G scanning now and it will still occasionally drop out and need a restart. Very bad connection.

I'd be buying a Samsung before giving up on Android. The battery life on my S23 would easily go for two days (with constant use) and everything just works… The only thing I'd complain about is how defeatured it is compared to an Ultra, but it's still way better than a Pixel!

Yep that happens with the P7 Pro, hate it.

      • YES! Oh man.
I went from a Samsung s20+ which would overheat only in 40 degree heat in direct sunlight (which is expected) to having a Pixel 7 Pro which on a freaking 25 degree day, driving in my car with maps open it overheats so fast its ridiculous. As someone who needs to drive with Maps on often, its a shit of a phone.

I use my P7 Pro almost everytime I'm driving, for traffic updates, and it's not had an issue. Plenty of 8hr+ driving stints in summer weather with Spotify and GMaps going and not once had it complain.

I've only ever had two occasions of it complaining about heat and that's been during heavy camera usage. Both times on a very warm day, full sun, taking lots of photos and some video. Didn't stop me using the phone.

    • I'm looking at getting the 9 when it drops but can't say that the modem in that one gives me any confidence.

What's horrible are the fanboys defending their devices with every single ounce of their being. The pixels have bad modems. I'ts a known fact yet they sweep it under the rug. They also fail to make phonecalls to emergency numbers. Like the phone cant phone half the time for those affected.

      There's no defending that!

Pixel fanboys are worse than iphone fans.

    • S24U here, very solid battery life. I sometimes don't place it correctly on the charger when I go to sleep, and wake up to ~45% battery - not a problem since it can survive the day on that (not the night out afterwards tho), and I can charge it in the car while I drive

otherwise when fully charged I rarely see a notification "please charge your phone" as it survives whole day and afterparty with flying colours

    • I have said many times, Pixel 7 is not as good as a 5yo Mate 20 Pro which battery is estimated to be 78% of original 4200mAh - still lasts much longer than Pixel 7.

Fellow Pixel 8 Pro owner. Can confirm, worst and most unstable phone I've owned in the past several years.

    • It's all true.

The P8P feels like a mid range phone. Not sure what is premium about it?

I don't take as many photos as I used to, also with how much space they take these days I don't snap away as much as my google photo app keeps telling me I'm running out of storage.

A few months ago I went from Pixel 7 to Iphone 15 pro, and actually considering going back to a Pixel. Software so much better for me. It is funny how some of the google basic functionality you take for granted over last 5 years is so much more convenient than on an iphone. eg Call History, Better camera , Pic editing, Call Screening, Voice transcription, Voice mail to text, Camera button (volume) on wrong side etc

Last week I swapped to my first ever iPhone (15 Pro Max) from a P6 Pro, and after close to 14 years being solely on android (ranging from nexus 5, pixel 1 (GOAT), pixel 3 xl, pixel 4 xl)

Apart from some minor niggles with UI (like being able to place apps where you want) the phone experience is pretty similar. Has been annoying to move all my passwords and stuff over to iPhone, but not a big deal. The phone definitely is a lot more premium feeling compared to my P6 Pro (and i'd expect it to, being the price difference it was).

The battery life is night and day. barely using my P6 pro would end up 30% at the end of the day no matter what, while my iphone its at about 70-80%.

Apart from that, the apple ecosystem just works better. my airpods connect instantly, things just work. In my late 20's, I'm just sick of feeling like a beta tester for google, or having to delete my earphones and reinstall everything randomly. Also, video on iphone just feels way better than android. I'd say ultimately, I like the overall ecosystem better than specifically the phone.

  • For JB Hi fi trade in, there is an option to select 3g/4g phone. I have an old redmi note 5 pro which is from India. Can I select that? Because for other trade in options(Apple/Samsung etc), JBHIFi wants only Australian devices. But for 3g/4g option nothing is mentioned.

    • Let me know how you go, my inlaws have old redmi note 5 pros too and need an upgrade.

    • Does anyone know if a Oppo A5
(2020) 3g/4g would fall in this category. Or is it only 3g phones?

Either I'm really lucky, or others in here are incredibly unlucky. My 8 Pro has been flawless since getting it, battery will last a day easy, even with streaming Bluetooth for 8+ hours, reception is great and all the different G's work great with my record speed test being 1355mbps on 5gx (Telstra), I've not noticed it overheat at all, other than when hotspotting for the kids on long drives, then it gets mega hot - maybe I just don't notice it because of the case I'm using.

I actually quite like the temperature sensor on it, it's quite useful for baby bottles (we have a 7wk old), baby bath, checking temp of milk left out by lazy teens, checking temp of meal box meat to make sure it's still good and now that I've tricked it into thinking I'm in the US, body temperature is awesome. Besides that though it's nothing special compared to the 7 Pro

    • Out of curiosity, how did you trick it into thinking you are in the US? Is there a guide online you would recommend?

I followed Mishaal Rahman's guide here - best of all is you don't need root access

        • you really live up to your name

Same. We have a number of pixels in the family from both the 7 and 8 series and had no issues with any of them with hearing or reception. All have been an all day phone for their owners. I don't think it's worth $1600 but at $1k it's a great phone. I'm trying to get the other half to take up this offer.

  • Pixel range has a problem, the phone would be amazing if they could fix the connectivity issues.

If you need a phone that can take and make calls reliably I would stay clear of pixels until they can sort the issue out.

Every time I pick up my pixel 8 it would have a text saying missed call but it never rang. I have no such issue with other brands. Otherwise amazing device.

    • I had the same problem with my P7 Pro until I moved away from Telstra. It has been rock solid ever since I've been with Optus. No idea how/why.

    • Have you checked whether the no disturb is on? I had that too with my 7a but for me it's a small problem for what essentially is a good phone. All I need to do is check the no disturb is off every time I wake up.

      • It is not a setting as it would work fine one minute and not the next.

I am extremely familiar with all the “fixes” as I have tried everything. The problem still remains.

      • I don't mean the setting. I set up the No Disturb for a specific time daily to be activated and de-activated automatically. But on some days, it did not get deactivated at the time I had set for one reason or another. Yes, I have had missed calls because of it. But I figure I could live with it.

        • I understood what you are referring too, it has happened to me but was not the case. I had would receive calls earlier in the day without issue.

DND was not turned on. Thanks for the suggestion though.
