This microwave will interrupt your wifi

    • +3

Only on 2.4, 5 is safe!

      • +9

And Bluetooth. My Bluetooth headphone disconnects intermittently while the microwave is operating

        • +5

I'm tired of seeing this exact two comments everytime a deal is posted for this microwave. I've had this unit for 5 years and yet to notice a drop in wifi or Bluetooth even when standing right next to it when operational

          • +1

            @Cleartripe: They aren't wrong - if you're doesn't drop it's because you're on a different frequency (5Ghz or simply a different channel).

          • +1

@Cleartripe: My Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones start distorting, if I'm standing within 2m of this LG Neo microwave while it's operating.

          • @Cleartripe: I love this microwave. 6 years and still going strong.

But agree with others. Wifi (nest hub max) and bluetooth (air pod) drops when in operation. Never bothered me as average microwave usage is less than 5 mins.

Wifi Channel is set to auto and works great in auto choosing the right Chanel based on neighborhood usage. I wouldnt change it for this

Would def buy again if it breaks

    • +1

The gas oven in the kitchen here interrupts TV when it is sparked on, even though the antennae is not he roof. Microwave from Kmart interrupts the wifi too. Kind of annoying really.

    • +4

I would love to find a microwave oven that doesn't interrupt 2.4GHz Wi-Fi.

      • +1

I find the Panasonic microwave inverter also stuffs up my wifi :(

      • +1

If you buy a non-inverter ones I think they have less of an effect. Otherwise invest in a 5GHz wifi router.

        • Otherwise invest in a 5GHz wifi router.

You do realise almost all modern Wi-Fi APs are dual band?

Furthermore, almost all Wi-Fi IoT devices use the 2.4GHz channel.

I got this Microwave a few years ago to replace a 15+year Panasonic that died. The LG is already rusting on the inside, would not recommend, very cheap quality.

    • I also have a microwave.

        Thanks for letting us know

dzhay must have worked hard to get ahead & is now living a life of luxury. Next item on the list is a Panasonic Plasma TV.

    • +2

Just need to clean it regularly. Mine has lasted for years with no rust or issues

      • +1

        Same

        • +4

Maybe the door needs to be left open to let any moisture dry out.

          • +4

            @WatchNerd: Agree with that.
            Used to repair microwaves.

            Never had a rust issue.
My recommendation was to leave door open & wipe down to remove moisture after cooking.

Enamel coating on some is poorer & prone to rust.

            Never bought a microwave.
Use good working microwaves neighbours pass on to me.

      • that's what you think, it'll be rusting on the inside of the outer casing, trust me I was very surprised when I opened mine to trace the source of a rattle to find a rust patch, the coating is very thin, I treated the rust but not great to find & most people don't take the casing off

    • +1

Bought one for my parents a couple of years ago and the control panel died, funnily enough also had replaced a Panasonic that was ancient but I moved out and took the Panasonic with me (and naturally its still going lol)

    • +1

Same here, only a few years old but rusting already :(

    • +1

Matches my rusting LG washing machine they refused to fix.

    • I must be very lucky. 6 years no sign of rust yet.

Funnily enough our 11yr old Microwave started crunching last night when spinning.

    What does OzB recommend?
I'm looking at the flatbed ones the combine a oven/airfryer. Like to keep it under $500.

    • -2

Buy a $50-100 second hand Panasonic on facebook and then buy a ~$150 whatever air fryer (there is only a couple of white label air fryers, all the brands are just stickers) and most people I have noticed will use an Air Fryer for a month or 2 then forget it exists

Depending on where you are for $500 you could likely replace your oven with one with an air fryer mode

      • -1

So replace your oven.. with an oven that has a convection mode? I used to be a believer but "air fryers" are one of the biggest marketing scams of the 21st century

        • +6

"air fryers" are one of the biggest marketing scams of the 21st century

How so? I'm a convert. Turn my oven on and pre heat for ages to heat up a handful of nugs or chuck em in the air fryer. Much faster and better result than the oven.

          • -6

@beefsandwich: You haven't got a fan forced oven? It's heated in 2 minutes

I think I just have a gripe with the whole "oil less fryer" thing, it's a convection oven shrunken down, they've been around forever you don't need one but everyone thinks they do. I had one for a year it's just another thing to clean, to store. Maybe I'm just getting into my cranky boomer phase, but the oven already in the house already does the exact same thing

            • +3

@AngryAlfred: 2 minutes? My fan forced westinghouse takes 15.

              • -3

@corky: Well I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it sounds like your Westinghouse sucks

                • @AngryAlfred: Google seems to indicate that's normal heat up oven time. Oven only 2 years old. I didnt neg you btw

            • +3

@AngryAlfred: The airfryer uses a lot less energy and fits most of my meals.

It's smaller so it obviously preheats a lot quicker, so food is cooked quicker too.

          • @beefsandwich: I haven't had any luck with our Philips air fryer. It seems some people love them and others don't.

Chips are soggy and unevenly cooked compared to deep frying (despite it being marketed as a healthy alternative to deep frying). I've found only pre-packaged "oven bake" chips work at all - chips made from fresh potatoes rarely give good results in the air fryer.

Baked veggies are unevenly cooked compared to a proper oven. In a proper oven, you have room to properly lay them out flat on trays and properly brown the root vegetables and caramelise the onions.

It's harder to clean than cooking in the oven, so the tradeoff in time isn't worth it. The oven pre-heats itself in 15 minutes unattended. Whereas when I use the air fryer, I spend an extra five or ten minutes cleaning it all up. With the oven, I put down baking paper on the trays, and they are cleaned in 30 seconds.

However, I only bake or fry food once a week at most. If I was using it every day to rapidly heat things up, and it stayed on the bench, and I wasn't worried about cleaning up all oil residue for storage, then the equation would be a bit different.

When I was a student, I had a toaster oven and loved it. Half my meals got cooked in that, and it stayed on my bench. By the time I retired it, it was saturated in oil and I didn't care. I was too busy studying and partying and just wanted something to heat up quick and easy processed food from the freezer section of the supermarket. An air fryer is a step up from that, and I can totally see myself being a fan if I was still that age and still ate that kind of food!

            • @axyh: I would recommend this one, use it all the time. https://www.kmart.com.au/product/25l-air-fryer-and-oven-silv…

It has a rotating basket for chips, which gives them a nice crispy finish all around.

              • @pformag: It looks remarkably like the fan-assisted toaster oven I had as a student in the 90s, chip basket and all.

In fact, looking at that, I'm now slightly confused at what the difference is between an "air fryer" and a "convection toaster oven" these days.

The original Philips air fryers (like the one I have) were different because they are shaped to provide high-speed circulating airflow, which would (theoretically) vapourise oil and rapidly circulate it. New models like this look indistinguishable from convection toaster/benchtop ovens of the type that have been around for decades.

        • +1

No, air fryers are not a scam.
They turn nearly as much energy into heat as a normal convection oven (air fryers commonly use about 2000 watts vs 2000 to 5000 watts for an oven), yet only have to heat up a much smaller mass of air (air has very poor thermal conductivity) and can direct it over a smaller area, creating higher heat flux and thus transferring the energy into (cooking) the food much quicker.

        • I used to think air fryers were a scam too — and then I moved to an apartment with a shitty oven that takes 20+ minutes to warm up, and I realised why air fryers are so popular. Especially if you're a time poor person looking to quickly fry up some chicken tenders at 8.45pm on a Tuesday so you can eat them while watching Seinfeld on your own, an air fryer makes a lot of sense.

    • Kmart does one. https://www.kmart.com.au/product/28l-air-fryer-convection-mi…

You need to have 30cm clearance on the top, so can't be put inside a cabinet.

  • +3

We have one of these, a few years old but we are looking to replace it as it is very inconsistent. We can put something in there for a set time, it comes out fine- then we put an identical item in and it comes out cold. Tonight was the last straw and my wife asked me to just buy another and throw this out.

    • +2

Unfortunately, this happened with mine (42l Neo Chef). fortunately it was within warranty. They replaced the magnetron.

I recall reading somewhere that this is a problem wth these LG's

      • +1

Yeah same. It got collected and replaced with a Panasonic.

    • +1

Hey I just started noticing the same problem on mine!

    • +2

I also have a NeoChef and it intermittently started not heating properly. It is now going to be replaced because it just won’t heat things up, plus I smelled electrical burning when I used it last. Bought it at LG factory seconds almost 4 years ago. Lots of posts online with this same issue.
Probably just gonna pick up a basic from Big W or KMart to replace it.

    • See my post below about LG inverter microwaves ramping down when they sense they are overheating. As a last resort, pull out the microwave and make sure you vacuum all the vents at the back in case they are blocked by dust. May improve things.

    $197.10 from Bing Lee

Hmm was in the market for the 25l one but the reviews here don't sound good. Anyone got alternative inverters to suggest?

  • Need recommendations for 20L microwave please

    • +2

      Kmart $50

  • Had one of these from 2019 to 2023, died and the only warranty centre in Sydney was in Blacktown. Too far for me to travel on the chance they will cover it so still sitting in my storage.
Replaced it with a K-mart one and it is a lot more powerful.

  • +1

Got one pretty much new off marketplace. Good microwave from my POV.

  • This must be an old model, I just bought one the other day for over $300 but the touch controls are build into the door which is the entire width of the microwave.

    • It got "CHOICE Australia's Best MWO Brand 2019 & 2020" according to LG although Productreviews.com show that some users bought the product in early 2018.

      • According to Canstar blue LG is the best brand and they only really have the one range out at the moment you just select what size suits you. The current 42L model also comes with a microwavable vegetable steamer which is what I have.

  • I got one over the weekend. Price match at TGG and use a $30 voucher received via text message.

  • I have been looking at new microwaves for about a year, because I stupidly dented the top of the door of the 15 year old Breville Ikon microwave that I currently own which still works perfectly fine. Many of the microwaves I have looked at look like poor quality cheap crap, my front runner is probably the Panasonic NN-ST67JS, but I’m not sold on it either. I’m kind of questioning whether I need a microwave at all, I barely use the one I have got anymore, I heat something up in it probably once every 3-6 months.

    • You eat cold pizza?

      • -2

I did say that I use my microwave maybe once every 3-6 months. I don’t eat pizza all that often, I never touch Domino’s or Pizza Hut, I place an order from 1 of 2 award winning local pizza parlours that have been around for 30 plus years maybe once every 3 months. When I do order pizza I generally share it with other people, I eat 3-4 slices myself, and most of the time there is no left overs. On the odd occasion when there is left over pizza, sometimes I eat it cold and sometimes I heat up a slice or few.

        • +1

What do you have for breakfast?

          • +1

@WatchNerd: 2 boiled eggs, and a latte, and maybe a banana if I want a little more… If I’m lazy on the days I don’t work from home, I’ll grab 3 scrambled eggs and a latte from the cafe just outside the office. 2 eggs for breakfast is ample, that’s one change that the Prime Minister made to his daily diet/nutrition plan to lose his weight.

  • +7

These are notorious for dead magnetron, rusting and wifi killing issues. Not like the old indestructible LG microwaves

    • +1 here. I own a different LG microwave model and whenever I’m microwaving, FaceTime completely dies when connected to wifi

    • After two replacements within warranty … in the span of a single year, we returned it for a full cash refund. Went and got a slightly more expensive Panasonic, and that has been great.

  • +1

Beware. Went through 2 of these that seemingly could handle heating up anything beyond 4 minutes without taking a big rest… Back to the manufacturer.

    • +2

I've had LG inverter microwave for about 5 years. Just note that all the LG inverter microwaves stipulate in the instruction manual that on 80%, 90%, or high settings, the microwave may reduce power to prevent overheating. It will do this without any indication.

So heat up rice for 4 people for 8 minutes, then ours goes weak and perhaps half power, so it takes forever to heat up anything after the rice.

Ours can take an hour to fully recover.

Good for short bursts but not good for prolonged heating.

Quality control is quite variable, so always possible you end up with an oven which has poor cooling and is much more prone to this than another.

  • +2

Good microwave, I bought this one 8 years ago, still works fine and we use it for 10 mins every day. You have to wipe it down and leave the door open for 15 mins after every microwave. But as with all new appliances, they don't make microwaves that lasts 30 years anymore, raw materials are too expensive to build them out of 1.5mm thick rust proof stainless steel now, those old ones never needed to be dried or wiped and wouldn't rust.

  • +7

My Panasonic flatbed one has been playing up for a while, and I’ve been on the market for more than a year. But every single time there’s a deal of microwave posted here, I could only see plenty of negative reviews here and elsewhere, with comments ranging from the machine dying after 2-3 years, to rust, to Wifi/Bluetooth interference…

Why is it so hard to make a good and reliable machine with a technology older than the oldest computer nowadays? It’s not like we demand it to be “smart” or AI enabled or anything like that, is it?

I wish there were Xiaomi and the likes for the non-smart home small appliances market.

    • +1

Love the Pana flatbed, great microwave IMO. I've never had a problem with mine.

      • Mine has developed issues like door hard to close, or stop half way and I’d need to open and close or rather slam the door to resume it. A quick google showed that the issues are quite common as well.

    • Mine died tonight. Have you found any good models yet?

      • Unfortunately no. Also if ylu haven’t tried it yet, you could try to unplug the cord and plug in again. Mine sometimes looks like it’s completely dead, but doing the classic trick has revived it, for now!

      • +1

GG rep said to stay away from LG and definitely not touch the gutless Samsungs. Pointed me to Westinghouse and Panasonic ones.
I got the Pana and happy with it so far a couple of years after.

  • +6

These suck. Went though 3 of them over the years. Magnetron died in all of them. Thankfully Harvey Norman replaced them all and refunded even after a few years old after I complained about it enough. Now have Panasonic flatbed one.

    • Exact same experience

    • I just had the magnetron replaced in mine too at 4 years old. Part was covered but not ~$100 labour.

  • +1

Those with access to the LG VIP store, please note most models are 25% off. Can stack with the "2024 EOFY VIP Offer 15%" coupon for an extra 15% discount. Got this model for $146 couple of weeks ago.

    • +1

How do you get access to the store?

      • Register through work email if your employer is a large corporate client. I think you can also register as VIP if you own one of their flagship "Signature" products.

  • My LG 25L smart inverter died yesterday. Won't heat up. Everything works as it is but it simply won't heat up no matter what. Contacted customer service for repairs but has to carry-in to Arndell Park NSW service centre which is too far from my location. Moreover out of warranty and I have been warned if no faults detected, I'll have to pay for charges and fees out of pocket. I think I'll buy a new microwave (different brand) to save cost.
