Lexar NM790 4TB M.2 2280 PCIe Gen 4×4 NVMe SSD with Heatsink $299 Delivered / MEL C&C @ Metrocom

1550

Lexar are doing a short, very limited, EOFY deal, via their local retailers.

Big shout out and thank you to our local OZBargain Lexar Rep for organising this and making it possible.

Only Metrocom & Mwave have updated their prices. BPC and JW are still to follow suit, so wait and watch to see what happens, or just buy @ $299.
Comes with Heatsink and without. I understand you can remove the heatsink but still have the warranty intact.

YouTube Promo on the drive.

Also available from

Edit: The other two have followed suit. Everyone is now at $299.

Edit 2:

There are a lot of questions about the heatsink.
PSA confirmed by the Lexar Rep: You can safely and carefully take out the heatsink and use it as is. Inside the heatsink is the exact same drive as the non-heatsink version. The warranty sticker is inside the heatsink, and stuck on the drive itself, so as long as you don't remove that sticker, it will remain under warranty.

The warranty is immediately void for user-induced damaged (not for removing the heatsink).

Edit 3:

Metrocom has sold out, so now buy from BPC. I believe Mwave has fees. JW is another good C&C option.

    • Best to check with Lexar first mate. If they say yes, then MWave and all other retailers will have to follow suit.

    • @OneSilver - confirmed that warranty is NOT VOID if heatsink is removed, provided there is no user-induced damage.

      • Thank you I will go buy it now

      • Is it hard to remove the heatsink aswell as are you saying metrocom does not void or all stores? Thanks

        • From other comments, it's pretty easy.

Warranty will remain for all stores as long as you don't damage it

bought. any good usb-c m2 ssd cases? with/without heatsink?

  • Tempted to order 4x of these, plus a one of these:
    https://www.aliexpress.com/i/1005006283775362.html

    • Looks good. It is so silly that in 2024 consumers don't have access to 16TB NVME in a reasonable form factor for a reasonable price.

  • I bought mine from Metrocom.
I have never bought anything from them before.
I hope they honour it and don't later say it's out of stock, wrong stock levels on their website, blah blah blah.

  • Good deal. Still deciding. I wish the 2tb had free shipping cause thats decent for 159. Too bad I cant find it at JB for a price match

  • are any of these stores in perth? I in perth on holiday.

    • Price already includes delivery tho

  • Is metrocom legit? Never heard of them before and MWAVE want $15 to deliver to me.

And no before you say it, i can't pickup, I'm VERY remote SA, in fact I'm closer to the WA border then Adelaide. So no chance of picking anything up, no matter what store I buy from.

    • Metrocom has been posted on ozb previously

There is also a rep on ozb

I got one from BPC Tech - free delivery and accepted afterpay

    • @Woody982
I received my auspost shipping notification today from Metrocom.

    • I don't have the items in hand at this stage, but I ordered on Saturday evening and it was processed and posted by Monday afternoon (their store was closed on Sunday). So, initial impressions are that they're quite efficient and the price including delivery was the cheapest of all of the available retailers (BPC Technology was also $299 delivered, but unsure if there were any card surcharges, etc. during the checkout process). If the situation changes and there are issues, I'll update this post.

      • I ended up buying from BPCtech, they didnt have the same price when I'd checked before posting my comment. But the did later on and while i haven't bought anything from them, i knew they were definitely legit. Only $299 with free delivery, nor surcharge for cc use.

Bought 24th, was posted 25th. In currently in transit to my very regional SA location. Processed in Adelaide and says in transit to my town today, so may or may not see it tomorrow. (On the highway to WA, so every truck going west has to go through my town)

        • Mine arrived from BPCtech yesterday. Very quick postage considering how remote I am. Probably helps being on the only road freight route West.

  • Whats the chance we'll get a deal on Black Friday? Want to build a new itx setup towards the end of the year once cpu and gpu refreshes come through. To start pre buying now or wait….

    • +1

Oh,, nooooo, just wait. Put that money else where it will grow.

  • Must… resist… so… tempted…

    • +3

The best way to deal with temptation…

Is to simply give in to it.

      • I was weak. I capitulated

  • +2

I've been watching prices on these drives for a while now. Long gone are the days of getting them super cheap due to oversupply issues. SSDs in general are all getting more expensive these days, so this is a very good deal. I suspect this is the cheapest you'll find a SSD of this calibre within the next 6-12 months - at least until pcie 5 drives come down in price to push these down too.

    • Yep, this.
Confirmed by the Lexar rep himself.

  • +1

Got one from METROCOM, I didn’t know if i needed it but was too good a price to resist. You can never have enough storage I guess.

    • +1

      Welcome to the bandwagon!

      • Sadly I didnt get a dispatch today. Hopefully they honour the deal.

        • I received an AusPost postage notification and email notification at 16.45hrs today. So mine went through.

  • bought team mp34 4tb one this Saturday for $319 in a hurry :/

    • +1

How is that performance compared to this one?
      With or without a heatsink?
Have you opened and used it yet?

      • I was in a hurry to run some simulations and started using it right away. It didn't come with a heatsink (but my MB has one for each SSD) and haven't bench marked it as I have directly mounted it to a Hyper-V VM. Already at 18TB both read/write :/ Looks like it has 128MB DRAM according to previous deals (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/805510). This is 5th SSD in my PC :/

  • Thanks, bought 1x

    • Welcome!

      Who did you buy from?

  • May or may not help someone, but I got a 2tb of these and couldn't for the life of me get it Initialise or format it with windows.. couldn't even give it a drive letter. Until I used Killdisk, wiped it and then it came up in windows… Was very frustrating

    • +1

couldn't even give it a drive letter

Did you try via disk management?

      • Isn't that's first thing you do, when you install a new hdd/ssd?

    • Is your motherboard bios up to date?

I had no issues installing fresh win11 on my nm790 2tb in an ASUS TUF GAMING B650M-E WIFI.

  • Perfect for a last minute under $300 instant tax write off…

  • Got amazon to price match the deal for 2tb variant (saved on the shipping cost) and used discounted gift cards. Thanks OP!

    • How do you do that?

    • +2

We strive to maintain low and competitive prices on everything we carry.

We constantly compare Amazon Australia's prices to our competitors' prices to make sure that our prices are as low or lower than all relevant competitors. As a result, we don't offer price matching

      • I saw that and then messaged anyway, and asked the representative if they could price match, they said its against the policy but they could make an exception for me being a “valuable” customer lol and said they could provide a $60 voucher to be used on the product which made it 169 and then i had some credits on amazon so ended up paying $100

        • $169 was less than what i had to pay including delivery and surcharge on mwave anyway so i went for it

          • @CheapAsChip5: Is there a reason you went for 2tb and not the 4tb at lower cost per tb?

            • @CodeXD: No, just needed one for my ps5 and i think 2tb is just enough for my use case

    • So you got the 2tb for how much?

  • Sorry to be a complete dope, but this will work with a laptop with PCI 4 wont it - I got this laptop? Have to remove heatsink is all? https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/msi-16-pre…

    • +1

I'll let a more knowledgeable person respond.

      @OMGJL

    • +1

Actually there is ventilation mesh above the NVME slots on the bottom lid. You may need to take off the heatsink.

    • +2

judging by the spec page there's only 1*M.2 slot,

      1x M.2 SSD slot (NVMe PCIe Gen4)

      there's a teardown video of a Stealth A13VF model there's 2* M.2 slot.

Unfortunately I can't find a teardown of Prestige 16 studio a13ve. (video listed by @BenneyHe2018 seems to be referring to a completely different model..)

your best bet is to open up the laptop cover before you buy the drive. You'll need to open up the cover to do any upgrade anyway so not like you are wasting much effort…

      Please check:
      1. If there's only 1 slot or 2 (so you know if you need to swap the drive or add-on another drive)
      2. the length of the slot (was it 80mm long from connector to screw mount point?)

The physical connector should be correct (NVMe 4.0), you just need to find out the size and the quantity.

When someone replies to a comment, the user who made the original comment will get a notification. There is no need to tag them again.

          • +2

@CodeXD: Not if they are not subscribed.
Also, some people get so many notifications, they sometimes miss the generic notification. This tagged one is different.
            Thanks anyways.

            • +1

@lordra: That would be stupid to ask a question… and then not subscribe when people reply to the comment tho lol

              • @CodeXD: Agreed! But you know, we're all human. 😅

      • +1

Thanks so much guys, i bit the bullet and bought it as i probably wont have time to mess around till next week anyways.

I could use it on the desktop at worst case. Have never opened up a laptop, hopefully its similar to the one above for a13vf video! The specs for this one shows only 1 drive spot yes.

Very much appreciate the help from everyone :)

        • +1

I think the heatsink will have to be removed. I've got a gaming ROG G513QM, and apparently it has another slot, but from the teardown images, doesn't look like the heatsink will fit into my laptop. The heatsink was probably designed for larger slots like PS5 or PCs.

  • JW castle hill has stock if you prefer buy in store

  • Jw is not 299 delivered. Only click n collect?
Is metrocom in sydney? Need this by this weekend

    • +1

Mate, all the details is on their website lol

    • Lots of options.
JW & MWave do a CnC.

    • Mwave click and collect in lidcombe

    • I used metrocom to get it delivered to me in NSW for $299

Mwave wanted some extra transit cover and bank transaction fees for extra $6 making it around $305 something

  • how does this perform in multitasking?

    • Pretty well, it can both read and write at the same time =)

  • Don't take too long, Its only a limited number and BPC Tech has already raised the price, sadly to a new high.

    • Still showing $299 at BPC for me, maybe they reduced it again?

      • I think it ran out of stock and reverted back to 455 AUD or something close. Mentioned that new stock comes in at June 28th. Looks like they restocked again and went back to 299.

      • Yeah I saw BPC had raised the price too and ended up buying from metrocom.

        • As long as we get it all is well I suppose, but I wonder if Metrocom are waiting for stock (despite saying In Stock). Still waiting on my order to be dispatched.

  • +2

The ACCC disagrees that removing a sticker voids a warranty.

  • Heads up mwave has some transit cover and bank transaction cover which added like $6 on top of the $299 so I went with metrocom

    • you can untick, that's what's i did.

      • ah damn i must have missed that thanks for the heads up

  • Nice looks like $75/TB is the new price point to beat

After this deal I'm going to have to wait on some Sata 3 deals aka Samsung evo 870

  • Thanks went with mwave, i think i also get $30 mwave credit as im going to pick it up.

  • Nearly pulled the trigger on the 990 Pro last week until I saw mention of this deal, awesome effort from everyone involved. First time I've strayed from Samsung SSD's in many years so interested to see how it performs over the long term. Really hoping to see that 3K TBW is true and I get 4 years out of it like I have the 980 Pro I'm currently using.

Does this one work on PS5?

  • how would one know whether they need to remove the heatsink or not?
is it something that you will only find out when you open the desktop case and try if it can be installed with heatsink or not?

my mobo is Gigabyte Aorus Pro AX Wifi B650m, which I believe comes with heatsink built-in

  • -1

Thanks for posting the deal OP :-)

    Just ordered from BPC Tech.

Originally tried doing the order through Metrocom but it came back declined on my card - presumably because they're using Square payments and Square has inexplicably blocked my card and refuse to talk to me about it.

@MetroCom maybe you should get a better credit card processor since you just lost a sale today - who knows how many other sales you're losing due to Square being run by a bunch of a**holes.

    • +1

Hi mate thanks for the info. We are using strip as the payment processor but we are switching to CBA powerboard. Hopefully it will fix the issue.

      • Sorry - my mistake, it's Stripe that is being difficult with my card.

        Apologies to Square!

    • Glad you benefitted from it bud.

    • This happened for me on the initial payment attempt as well. However, it worked OK on the subsequent payment attempt, and didn't double charge my card.

  • Does anyone have any opinions on using this as an OS drive? I need a drive for a new build, and 4TB looks very tempting. From googling I saw some reviews saying it can be slow (comparatively) for random writes, which in theory might be less ideal for your OS and it's swap etc, but I have no idea if it makes an actual noticable difference in the real world.

    • I had planned to replace my laptop's boot drive with this, but realised I had a second slot available. I thought I'd just use it as a secondary drive for storing games and other miscellaneous items. It's still a relatively new product, so I probably wouldn't dare to use it as my main drive.

    • biggest issue with using such a big drive for a boot drive is that if you are forced to reinstall, i like to clean format my system drive, I mean you could partition to get around this though…

    • I have the 2tb no heatsink version as an OS drive, upgraded from an A2000 (2,000MB/s vs 7,400MB/s). Works great, I have put my fav games (or larger new games) on it; always first to load into an insurgency sandstorm map.

      • +1

Would you be able to tell me the idling temperature without heatsink and with heatsink (assuming you are using the mobo one), many thanks in advance.

        Regards

        • I just have it in my pcie 4.0 slot, no heatsink at all for this slot. There are 3 drive temperatures for it in hwinfo (not sure the difference)

          First two are 56c
          Third is 35c

For reference my CPU is also 53-56c, gpu is 49c, hdd&sata ssd are 22c but are right next to front intake.

Over summer I think I saw it hit 60-65c (if I saw it over 70c I'd probably stick a random heatsink on it).
