Quick scan shows this to be all time low.

AMD 9 series are coming so the steep discounts are normal. Not sure if historically they keep declining further before a launch but seems like a very good value if you were putting together a system right now or upgrading.

I got the Ryzen 9 5900x from the other days deal so I am actually happy with 4 extra cores for 8 more dollars (also I think the L2 and L3 memory is larger too).

Anyway, sorry if you bought it from one of the recent deals but this isn’t that much of a discount from them anyway.

  • This is under AM4 platform? What's the difference compared to AM5 one anyway?

    • +2

I mean platform wise, the pins are on the motherboard instead of the cpu but the real difference is the AM5 is the new generation CPU’s, so the CPU itself is the year on year improvement. And also AM5 is going to be the next few generation so you can always do drop in replacement where AM4 no longer gets updates (though AMD did launch some this year to everyone’s shock…)

      • +3

PCIE 5.0 and DDR5 would be pretty notable changes too…

PCIE 6.0 also a possibility, in time.

        • +2

          yes great point!

      • wait what they launched

    • +1

      DDR4 vs DDR5 ram.

PCI-E 4 vs PCI-E 5 too, but they are backwards compatible, and only high end SSDs hit the PCI-E4 speed limit.

This CPU is for people who currently have a AM4 system and want to upgrade the CPU (2000 series, 3000 series or 5000 series), or people building budget systems.

  • Isn't the discount more because 5800XT was announced?

    • "AMD has also confirmed pricing for these processors: the 5900XT will retail at $359, while the 5800XT will cost $249."

As in $USD, which would be $374AUD for 5800XT at best… which is $100AUD more than this.

      • Those prices are not actually confirmed. AMD initially had those on a now deleted slide and has yet to announce the official RRP.

      • +2

rehashing old products with a brand new price, AMD is taking the piss.

Wouldn't it make more sense to buy a 5700X3D? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/851723

    • Maybe? I am not really sure tbh.

    • +7

      For gaming get the 5700X3D

      • But $32 and Amazon warranty rather than Ali. The 5800 is slightly faster, correct?

        • +4

CPUs don't fail. If they work out of the box they are going to continue to work more or less forever. Consequently, any warranty beyond day one is essentially irrelevant.

        • +3

For gaming the 5700X3D is generally faster due to the added cache.

Ali sellers do warranty but I agree amazon is much less hassle, in saying that I can't name anyone who has warrantied a CPU.

    • +3

Yes. I bought the 5800X in March for a light system upgrade, then the 5700X3D for a family member in May to reuse an old motherboard. My family member got the better deal.

The 5800X uses more power and runs hotter, even after tweaking the clock settings. It really wants to spin the system fans up to full even with light use.

In hindsight I would have been better off getting two 5700X3Ds.

Lmao so I got the 5950X from another amazon deal a while back to replace a Ryzen 3600 only to see that performance in gaming wasn't that big in comparison to what I had spent, since my graphics card was only a RTX 4070. RTS and turn-based games did make huge gains but FPS bangers didn't. The 3600 holds up quite well for casual gaming even in 2024 so don't know if a lot of people would benefit getting anything past a 5700X3D IMO

I think you might benefit from a higher GPU like 4080+ when using anything more than a 5700X3D and up cause of the performance headroom increase

    • Thanks for that info. I'm sitting on a 3600 with a 3070 and was very tempted by the recent 5900x deal. Have resolved to wait for a decent 5800x3d deal (i need the single core perf as not just gaming). 5800X3d will give me single core and gaming bumps at 1440p now, and should enable a GPU upgrade in a year or two quite well.

    • I have a Ryzen 5 3600X from 2019, paired with a 2070 super. The only game I want to play is Age of Mythology Retold when it launches in September.
I’ve been thinking about buying a 32” 4k monitor (the recent OLED / Alienware) to treat myself, but don’t want to if that also means I have to buy a new desktop. Do you think it’ll hold up, with frames, or would you recommend I replace any specific parts of my desktop rather than replace the whole lot? I noticed you said that RTS got big gains from the 5950X but I thought the bottleneck might be my graphics card. I’m also happy to wait a few months for prices to drop / new tech, but thought EOFY deals might be a good time to pick up some parts.

      • Sorry I should've said turn-based (TBS) strategy like Civ5 etc where there's intense CPU computations not RTS. The monitor would be prioritised in your situation and then you might have to look into overclocking the card to try squeeze out more FPS over time before capping out at the GPU level and doing an upgrade.

        • Okay. Adds up. Might just be patient and see how we go for now. Maybe I’ll be irresponsible and buy the monitor and if I need to update the kit later, it can be a future problem :’)

    • Well a 5950X isn't going to give you much improvement in gaming. Games are usually single threaded workloads. The only benefit you'll see is from Zen 2 to Zen 3 cores.

25 upvotes? What's wrong with this community? 5700X3D from aliexpress is the way to go.

    • +2

5700x3d owner from aliexpress no issues so far

    • Even the 5600 was a better deal.

        repeat after me:

peasant 6 cores are never the better deal
peasant 6 cores are never the better deal
peasant 6 cores are never the better deal

        • +3

At less than half the price? Still not better?

    • Yeah I got mine. Delivery in 6 working days from china. Mint.

  • Was hoping for ryzen 5 7600 is it much better than the 5800x?

    • You'll need an AM5 motherboard for 7xxx

      • Thanks never realised the 5800x3d is am4 I have am5 right now

        • 7800x3d or die

    • Gamers go x3d evrytime

  • DOH! - the 5950x is cheaper then 18th - does the claim back work for the price difference for people?

  • +2

harder to cool than both 13900k and 7950x3d.

on the same cooler that I can do 280w on 13900k I can only do 130w on 5800x, this is WITH der8auer oc bracket for chiplet offset.

Would suggest 5700x3d/5800x3d instead, and if x3d not needed, then regular 5600.

  • +3

This is a bit of a "meh" cpu. If you're gaming, go for the 5700X3D - if you're more interested in productivity, go for the 5900X for $70 more.

  • This is a good CPU, I bought it nearly 3 years ago and it has performed well. Very fast. It should be fast enough for another 3 years for sure for gaming and productivity.

  • I may have been said already but if you are a gamer go for 5700x3d deal instead. If you get a decent die you may be able to OC it to 3.2 GHz

Last throw of the dice for your am4 build. It will get you well in 9xxxX3D deals time frame neway
