Also don't forget to get the techswap gift card from shopback (2.5% cash back) and swap to ebay gift card to get it a bit cheaper.

  • Do you think we'll see a Dell S2721DGF deal again?

I want a second one, or to upgrade my monitor, but I really can't see if there is anything worth upgrading to that isn't hilariously expensive.

Should I just get this, and put them side by side and deal with the OCD incurred about them being two different monitors?

    • +3

Buy two of these and give your existing monitor to a relative. It's the OCD OzB way.

    • +4

I don't think Dell sell this particular model anymore. The current generation model is the G2724D I believe.

    • It's what I'm doing. The HP is marginally better than the dell

      • is this hp better?

    • The S2721DGF is pretty old hat these days, which is fair enough considering it was released in 2020. Even if it became available again, I'd look elsewhere. The LG nano-IPS panels they were built around were among the best at the time, but had a glaring weakness in that they had relatively poor contrast. However its advantages in other aspects of performance made up for it.

These days I feel that's no longer true - competitors have caught up with the LG panel, which still has the same weakness in contrast that it's always had. If you want a real upgrade from your Dell, I would suggest an MSI MAG 274QRF QD E2 (that's a mouthful), with its most prominent selling point being a wider colour gamut offered by the use of Quantum Dot tech. However if you wanted a second monitor to run alongside the Dell, this advice might not apply because the difference in the image between the two side-by-side may be distracting and another Dell or LG may be more appropriate.

EDIT: It seems the new Dell G2724D no longer uses a nano-IPS panel so ironically an LG 27GP850 would be a closer match to your existing Dell.

      • so is the hp better than the ol s2721dgf?(i have 1)

and is this monitor diff to the x27q which hardware unbox reviewed coupl yrs ago aye

        • Yeah, different to the X27q. The only reputable monitor reviewer* that I can see has reviewed this newer model is RTINGs. They acknowledge the panel lottery but unfortunately don't make it clear whether they have the LG or BOE made panel in their review unit. Regardless, they also note it has relatively poor contrast, just like the S2721DGF. Very similar measurements to their review of the Dell actually, so if you're fine with the Dell, you'll be fine with the HP.

(For context, while IPS monitors generally all claim 1000:1 contrast, when measured both the HP and Dell fall below 900:1. As expected, the effect would be more noticeable the darker the room.)

That said, it should be acknowledged that the HP is designed as a more budget product than the Dell. This does mean that while you can expect fairly similar image quality, the HP does lack some features and will probably feel a bit more plasticky in terms of the build quality. It doesn't swivel so you'll need to rotate the entire (thankfully small) base to line up the unit properly with your existing screen, and it has no "extras" like any USB ports built in. Not that stuff like that particularly matters for a secondary monitor though.

          • For reference, I consider the big four of monitor reviewers to be RTINGs, TFT Central, PCMonitors.info and Monitors/Hardware Unboxed. Be wary of DisplayNinja who are known to plagiarise content.
    • Wasn't that discontinued? I also want another but it doesn't seem likely now.

    Thanks. Grabbed one.

  • +1

    Bought 1, thanks!

  • Hmm this or should I wait for Lenovo R27q30 I have on order to arrive in a few weeks time… Any recommendations?

    • +2

They're pretty equally spec'd. The HP is equally bright on paper but looks like it isnt HDR400 certified.

I'm probably just going to hold on to my Lenovo order as I'm not really in a rush for it. If you don't want to wait, you'll probably be fine to cancel as it looks like these are equally matched.

      • +2

Unless it's oled/miniled, hdr certification is entirely fluff.

    • +1

In your position I would stick with the Lenovo. It's technically better on paper.

They are both very similar but the Lenovo has 2xHDMI 2.1 ports while the HP has 2xHDMI 2.0 ports.

The Lenovo also has built in speakers. The HP does not.

Overall I think the main question you should ask yourself is can you tolerate the the ugly Lenovo stand?

      • I guess I will just wait for the Lenovo in that case.

        Thanks for the responses.

      • +1

but the Lenovo has 2xHDMI 2.1

Kinda pointless to have HDMI 2.1 because it doesn't even support HDMI Forum VRR.

        • Does 120hz work on consoles without HDMI 2.1?

          • @keejoonc: On my LG 2020 1440p monitor, my PS5 goes up to 1440p /120hz on HDMI 2.0 connection. If was a 4K monitor I think it would cap at 1440p because of HDMI 2.0.

            • @Spawn Peak: Ok thanks. Don't plan on using it with console at this stage but just in case.

    • Review of the respective monitors.

      https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/hp/omen-27q

      https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/lenovo/legion-y27q-20

Legion is slightly better for gaming and looks better imo. But the vrr for ps5 doesnt work apparenty. So if buying for ps5 dont expect vrr to work even though it has hdmi 2.1.

At this price though. You cant go wrong with either.

      • That review is for the Y27q-20 not the Y27q-30 though.
        Does that matter?

    • I can't decide either

  • I bought this monitor from the ebay store 3 days ago :( and its still in the box. I could return it using the ebay 30 day return policy and order it again. Anyone else done this? Come on HP, just give me a gift card or something and we'll call it even!

    • +1

Haha. I know that feeling man. You buy something and someone posts a better deal than what you got on Ozbargain only a few days after you got it. (You just wish you didnt see it or know about it but its too late that you saw it)

And in this case that someone you hatin is me. 😈

      • +2

Live by the bargain, die by the bargain

  • anyone know how this compares to the G2724D?

    • If they're the same price I would have picked the Dell. But, they aren't the same price :).

    • +1

I've got the G2724D. The main advantage of it is that it supports HDMI Forum VRR.

  • +1

    Thanks OP
I'm building a pc for one of my employees and I had bought an LG 27GP850-B for $400 but I cancelled that order and got the Omen for him.

  • +1

    Perfect for tax time

  • Is the lack of retina noticeable / bad compared to phones, iPad?

    Currently using a MBA.

Looking to use an external display for that, and SteamDeck.

Seems like 4K = good price.

High refresh rate = good price.

Both 4K and high refresh rate with good brightness = almost $1k.

    • MacBook built in display is 60hz, air (or any other MacBook) is not really a gaming laptop.
I'd look more into 4k monitors for your usage.

      • MBA is for work.

        SteamDeck is for gaming.

Looking to setup a 'home office' with a dock for both, monitor keyboard & mouse which are used for both too.

    • +2

      What's lack of retina?

      • +2

Apple's word for high pixel density display

  • I pReFeR wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwqhd

  • How about this for the same price?

    • +1

Based on the specs, omen has much better brightness (400 vs 250) and a better stand.
Viewsonic is faster (if you really care about 180 vs 165hz) and slightly better response time (0.5ms vs 1 ms).

    • +2

Yeah, as above, the ViewSonic has tilt adjustment and …that's it. The fairer comparison from ViewSonic's range would be the VX2728J-2K, which not only has height and pivot like the HP, but also adds swivel. However while it's been just under $300 in the past, the current $340 price feels a bit high.

That said, the HP is subject to a known panel lottery, where some of them have an LG panel, and others a BOE one. This makes reviews of the HP somewhat unreliable since you can't know for sure whether the unit you receive will be the same as the one reviewed. Neither panel is terrible, but they are definitely not the same.

  • Not sure if it is only for ebay plus members only

Nope, works with non plus eBay as well.
    Thanks OP

  • Is this daisy-chainable?

    • +1

Only at the end of the chain I imagine given it has no DP-out

  • -8

    IPS :(

    • -4

Not sure why my comment is getting downvotes. IPS panels have poor black levels. S-PVA is better.

      https://linustechtips.com/topic/1352469-is-va-contrast-that-…

      • +1

Most people prefer the better pixel refresh rates and motion clarity in a high refresh monitor.

Also your original comment could have been taken you were comparing to oled, which are 2-4 times the price

      • Most VA monitors are really slow and produce that awful smearing effect

  • Grabbed one, thanks

  • i have a HP OMEN and theyre great

    • Better then lenovo legion? 😅

  • Thanks OP! Ended up getting this over the Samsung G51C 27" QHD monitor even they though they are virtually the same price. I didn't want to deal with the text clarity/ghosting issues on the Samsung. The additional contrast ratio is not worth it.

  • +1

    Back in stock !

    • Saw that… and now gone again!

      • and back again. Trying to get me to commit to purchasing…

  • I got 3. Is that too many? 🫣

  • Back in stock, anyone know if this monitor has built in speaker ?

    • +1

no inbuilt speaker but it does have an 3.5mm audio jack

  • +2

Back in stock and ordered. Just not sure why.

    • this is the way

      • haha I am tempted af ngl…

i think i might bite the bullet

  • Again back in stock (more then 10) after they added 7 earlier.
    Ended up getting one.

  • +1

great monitor, arguably the best sub $300 monitor with 27"/1440p/400nits specs

  • ToS says For all ebay Members.

    Hmmm I have 4 monitors over 144hz…

    shud i get this? xD

might be for a future build for one of my sisters i.g

got 1x 25in 240hz FHD alienware the 24521HWL or smth

    got 1x dell 24in FHD s2421dgf?

    got 1x dell 27in 165hz QHD s2721dgf

    got 1x Viewsonic 27in 144hz QHD XG2705-2K

Bought one, gonna figure out what to do with it later

  • Bought one but don't have any more room on my desk !!!!

  • Now thinking I won’t use it. I don’t high end pc game. What’s the story with eBay returns these days?

    • +1

      eBay plus?

I don't know, but the listing says:

    • +1

Send an email first to seller if it hasn’t been shipped

      • Yep done. Thanks.

        • Refund processed. No response from HP but at least they refunded me.

  • Bought one. For some reason code didn't go through while being logged-in to ebay. Worked using guest checkout.

  • +1

Those who bought. Let us know which panel you received.

    https://ledstrain.org/d/2767-omen-27q-monitor-opple-results-…
When you buy this monitor there is two revisions.. one uses a BOE panel which is BGR subpixel layout while another revision uses an LG panel that has RGB subpixel layout. You can tell which revision you get by looking at the box, it's noted with a revision. If it starts with B it's BOE and if it starts with L it's LG. This monitor supposedly is true 8 Bit.

I will check and report back when I get home. It got delivered today. Fortunately, a family member was at home to receive it.

    • My 3 were due today but didn't arrive.
From the reading I've done on reddit to problems with BOE seem a bit overblown?

      • +1

        https://imgur.com/a/xqqSNYW

I hit the jackpot. Got the lg panel. I dont think BOE panel is that bad, but I still prefer the lg for panels.

        • I'll cross my fingers!

        • I got 3x Rev. L0IT1121

        • Lg as well - L0IT1121

    • I got mine today, Rev B0BT1121. Screen seems really clear and ultra bright. Very solid and sturdy build.

    • One of each. Both manufactured April '24. Bought two of the same monitor because two different monitors side by side would bug me. Didn't realise/check until they were set up. Have not changed the settings, one definitely has whiter whites. Not sure which is which yet.

      https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/182767/113923/20240702…

      • That's rough

        • It should end up being okay. The frames are the same so if I adjust the settings I'm sure they can be close enough to the same.

  • +1

I set it up today. It looks great out of the box but will look even better with a bit of calibration. Very impressed with the monitor for its price and typing this as I am looking at the monitor.

Also dont forget to go with a fine comb to detect any dead pixel. My one had none and very minimal backlight bleed.

  • +2

Those who bought it. Happy gaming :)

And those who got the LG panel congrats. But I suspect everyone received the LG panel.

  • grabbed one, thanks

  • +1

Ordered on the 21st and still awaiting postage :(

    • 👀

Maybe they can give you boxall's. Clearly poor communicators.

      • They definitely are. Messaged them yesterday morning and still no reply.

    • same here

      • :( If nothing by this Friday, maybe I'll just get a refund…

    • Yep same here. 24th ordered and tumbleweeds…

      • They finally replied to my eBay msg. "…it is currently being processed by our warehouse team. To ensure you receive your order as quickly as possible, we have marked it for priority shipment. You can expect your order to be shipped by next week."

        We'll see next week…

  • I read on the HP website that this monitor has FreeSync. Is that true? If so, I have an Nvidia 3060 ti. Can I use FreeSync effectively with an Nvidia video card?
