Do I Switch from nbn FTTC to 5G?

So like all the other Exetel customers the price increase on my NBN 50/20 was enough for me to cancel plus the guy I spoke to was rude AF when I went to cancel like I owed him for being a Exetel customer telling me that “I” was costing them money because my current plan was too cheap 😂 at $69.95 per month - anyway he tried to offer something but couldn’t be bothered with him.

So now I need to find something else - Optus has a 5G home Internet plan which intrigues me
I did a speed test on my home NBN with Exetel today current speed was :
27.97 download , 12.31 upload
I then did a speed test on my phone which is connected to Optus :
286.65 download , 1.03 upload

So am I better off getting a 5G Optus home Internet instead of NBN - Optus is offering $79 for 6months then $99 with Netflix included
Or $69 for 100/20

I’m a bit confused
Help ?

Can you not just upgrade to 100/20 for the currently promo price of $68.99 for 6 months?

Well I didn’t give the Exetel guy tjme to offer me anything he annoyed me 🙄 maybe I need to call back haha

RIP to this thread then. Great idea and all but if all you're seeing is ~1Mbps upload, you're too far away from your local tower / cell. Your upload speed isn't anywhere near acceptable for online gaming.

        • Some telcos restrict their upload speeds as they only promise good download speed and don't care about upload speed.

      • Had exact same experience with Exetel retention team earlier today, been with Exetel for 6-8 years and guy did me a BIG favour as he said I give you $5off/mth for 6 months. I said so you don't want long term customers? I said ok I guess I have been happy with Exetel so take the $5 for six months, then he changed it to $4? so I said keep your money, I think I'm now happy to move elsewhere. May regret it but happy to pay the same, elsewhere as they have a care factor of 0.

  • I switched back from 5G Home Internet due to ping issues in online games, but the speeds were incredible.

    • Aahh this is what worries me , my teenager son is a PC gamer

      • +2

Are you worried he might do something more productive than playing games?

      • It was very frustrating, would not recommend.

With NBN my ping to an AU server is 20ms, on Telstra 5G Home Internet it was 60ms at best which is workable, however it had constant spikes to 600ms-800ms for 5-10 seconds at a time which sucked.

I can see the 5G tower from here, clear line of sight to the modem with Ethernet, so to me that was inexcusable.

Have a look at these guys, been happy with them, $49/month for 6 months: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/827316

      • @ELH05 Go on here and tell us your nbn tech type. For example;

nbn® Fibre to the Node (FTTN) has been used in your connection to the nbn network.

After you put in your location does a blue box appear saying you can swap to FTTP?

It’s here! nbn full fibre is now available.

Make the jump to near gigabit speeds# by ordering a full fibre connection over Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) with an eligible plan◊.

        • I am FTTC 😊

          • +1

@ELH05: Oh yes then it says I can upgrade to FTTP

            • +1

@ELH05: Get FTTP. Gamers want low ping times and most reliable service and FTTP delivers that. To swap from FTTC to FTTP select 250/25 from a participating ISP. A technician will come setup the fibre box. After your 1st month is done you can continue on 250/25 or swap to any speed you wish. If you have speed problems consider purchasing a new router and use ethernet cables where possible.

Leaptel are doing 250/25 $79/m for 12 months.

Superloop are doing 250/25 $85/m for 6 months. Superloop use the same sales team as Exetel but signup online to avoid that.

Aussie BB are doing 250/25 $99/m for 12 months.

@Twix: Twix you have been super helpful!!!! Leaptel seems like a good deal !

                • +2

@ELH05: All good. Ask for a new deal after 6/12 months or swap ISP again to get the best deal.

  • As said above, packet jitter and ping can be a problem for time-sensitive applications. As is the poor upload. Consider this if you WFH.

Also consider the issue of finding somewhere to put the modem that is a good tradeoff between Wi-Fi signal and 5G signal. I was in a two-story brick/concrete townhouse that made this a nightmare and ended up needing to run a Unifi POE AP to upstairs.

The first point above made me switch back from my $89/mth Telstra Fixed 5G. Shame, as it was ridiculously fast (750Mbps+ IIRC) for the price.

So am I better off getting a 5G Optus home Internet instead of NBN - Optus is offering $79 for 6months then $99 with Netflix included

    No.

A friend was getting low speeds on their NBN. They complained, someone came out and started messing around with the junction case thing, and then they were getting the full speed they were paying for. Might be worth chasing up your speed troubles before giving up on wired broadband. Your home may eventually get FTTP and you'll definitely want that if you consume internet like a lot of us here do.

  • I then did a speed test on my phone which is connected to Optus :
    286.65 download , 1.03 upload

Was this a test over 5G? Cause that upload speed is unusable for anything more than a voice call (you will have trouble with Zoom calls).

Also, what's your latency? If you have latency in the hundreds of ms, even your voice calls are going to suck.

    • Yes it was, ok so a speed test off your phone is basically not relevant

So am I better off getting a 5G Optus home Internet instead of NBN

How long is a piece of string? Some considerations: How many people in your house sharing your internet? Do any of them require low latency or reliability (gaming, work etc).

  • +2

I would pefer stability and latency over max speed.

  • -1

There is almost no world where 5G would give better performance than nbn FTTC, unless you aren't using any wired connections at home or have a 5G tower right outside.

  • Thanks everyone, have made the choice to go with an upgrade to 250/20 with Leaptel - for the same price I would of been paying Exetel for a 50/20 plan

    • +1

pay the $10 extra and get the 1000/50 plan, make your son get a part time job to make up the extra $10

      • Lol I mean I like that idea :)

Currently use Telstra 5g Home internet. I have been using it past 14 months.
    1. There is a latency compared to wired connections, which sometimes in peak time is noticable.
    2. Speed on Mobile 5g tests is not the same on your home internet. none the less the speed on 5g moving from 50mbps speed will be higher.
    3. Speed is not always consistent as you see on wired lines.
    4. No issues streaming youtube, Netflix, prime etc

If its just streaming movies, live games, browsing, WFH..no issues.

Like others mentioned above, gaming could be - but i cant offer thoughts on it as i do not.

Have been for past 6-7 years with Exetel $69.99 50/20 going up to $79.99 moved to Kogan 50/17 painless switch over in a few hours and didn't lose connection at any time and a better ongoing price from Kogan, early days but ATM same speeds I was getting with Exetel.
