18 bucks per light, no thanks

  • Seems mighty expensive for 7m of these lights. Usually festoon lighting comes in lengths at around 20m because you use so much.

    • Just buy three of them, and cut 1m off one of them.

  • Decent price if you’re after lifx functionality outdoors

Actually cheaper by 99c at jb

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/lifx-string-light-rgbw-7-…?

And $10.99 you can get it delivered by Uber today (dependent on location)

  • I’m guessing these are for the upper class Ozbargainer.

    • Some people spend tens of thousands of dollars doing backyard renos and not even close to being considered ‘upper class’ - this is a nice way to spend once cry once and adds a sick ambience to an outdoor area. I kinda prefer just straight 2700k warm white though.

If you make your backyard nice enough that friends will want to hang out there, you can save money in the long run compared to going out to bars all the time.

How did that get a downvote?

      • Some Jingle Jollys festoon lights and a smart plug gets you 23 metres of warm white filament LED bulbs for ~$80.

Good old WS2812 string lights for me

  • $1.1 each light at Bunnings Greenacre… $13 a pack of 12 including RGB lights, wifi capable control on 12 metres of rope

Yeah, but some people want ones that are programmable via stuff like Home Assistant - which these LIFX ones are - so they can do actual lighting design, rather than just generic app-based control.

LED lights have just become another marketing ploy to get everyone to over-spend.

    • LED lights are not expensive, LED smart lights from companies like LIFX are expensive.

LIFX bulbs are much higher quality than Philips Hue for example, though Hue has mainstream integrations with more apps and devices.

        • I'm kind of on the side that even if they are physically better, in the long run after a few years I've always had lifx globes stop responding or becoming sporadic to wifi/colour and power change commands. Kind of gets rid of the point.

          • +1

@superroach: LIFX can be dimmed down to 1% brightness, the Hue bulbs tap out at about 30%.

I have to budget my weekly food grocery shopping. I can't even afford this!

  • I would buy this if Lifx offered 7.3 years warranty.

    • They've gone into receivership once, I wouldn't trust any warranty they put out :)

      • That may be so. But given this has been marketed as a high-end top-quality product and at this per metre price point, it should come with longer warranties to back their claim. Lifx purposely made it 7.3m length so you have to buy 2 or more for most outdoor applications, for example a standard gazebo is 3x3m, so to go around it you will need a string light of 12m.
Also, it would have been nice to have physical buttons on the controller to cycle through the colours and/or themes.
