  • keen to get one for this price, with an integrated hopper/grinder, if anyone has a recommendation.

I'd go for this and a separate grinder, in my opinion. A bit messier but (maybe) better coffee.

      • +2

Iā€™d keep them separate as well. That way when things break you can get separate components. The Bambino plus gets very good reviews as an espresso machine

      • better coffee the average consumer will not even notice though.

I had a bambino and grinder, but the grinder broke, and I realised I just don't want to sink this much into a coffee machine setup. My express has been doing amazing for over 5 years now, an absolute champ.

      • Someone: needs a coffee machine with an integrated grinder
OzB: you shouldn't need it, because

        ;)

        • +2

Hahaha it's always the way. The barista masters are out today - op wants something for $500, "no get something else that you don't want for $1000". "It's cheaper to replace the items when they break" - they cost the same independently as a whole barista express ……

        • Hey we're trying our best to be tightarses here.

@onlinepred I'm curious why you replaced both the grinder and machine when you could have got a great hand-grinder or entry-level burr grinder for like $100?

That's part of why people recommend separate machines.

          • @blazerunner: Because there was an underlying hate for having two machines and two power cables haha. I sold the bambino and bought a factory seconds barista express for $399, so it was a very easy decision given the price.

            • @onlinepred: Fair enough, not a problem for me but makes sense šŸ˜… As long as you enjoy what you've got!

this highlights my main issue with Breville - they all eventually end up in landfill

When I had an Italian machine with a built in grinder, I could at least have it repaired if it had an issue

        • they all eventually end up in landfill

          How come?

They're so ubiquitous - parts are available from Breville, from others and from old machines. There are video and text guides. Besides, mine has been going strong for many years, same with my friends' Brevilles.

        • We had a Barista Express which was a hand me down hand me down, it was in a house with 3 coffee drinkers for about 4 years, it finally needed some decent love with a flow sensor, seal kit, and a few minor tweaks. I didn't have time i gave it away to its now forth owner who refurbed it and is now pouring shots with it.

We purchased a good condition second hand Dual Boiler, there are literally communities on the net discussing mods, repairs, and guides.

For anything less than $2k new it is bloody hard to go past them.

keen to get one for this price, with an integrated hopper/grinder, if anyone has a recommendation.

That's one refreshing request, seeing multiple, very recent deals for exactly that, and all the evergreen discussion with lots of advice not to get it integrated under every-single-deal :D

IMO you should totally get an integrated grinder, unless you're an espresso ninja lvl 100 or aspiring to be one (apparently!).

Yesss, those are all expired though. :( Hopefully one pops up in time for EOFY.

    • Its a great machine, I have this and a smart grinder, has been working well for a few years, I bought an unpressurised basket for mine, though they possibly come with one now.

a tip: the black and white ones are easier to keep looking clean than the stainless steel version

    • Had a black one for maybe 6+ years now. Still works brilliantly!!

It's great being able to clean the whole unit in about 1 minute.

  • Got the Sunbeam EM4300K from last year's deal but haven't been able to find nice pre-ground beans. Work has a similar machine with an in-built grinder which we have been using for the last couple of years now and it does make a better coffee from fresh beans. Not keen on the extra mess/effort/storage of a separate grinder, hence keen to get an all-in-one unit. Appreciate everyone who is suggesting a separate grinder, but I'd rather a compact, all-in-one unit. šŸ‘

    I have this.
    Not great milk.
3 temperature choices , 3 milK frothing selections.
Doesn't add much air to it.
Frothing wand regularly blocks despite cleaning.
The pros -heats up very quickly, turns itself off.
    -small footprint.
The smaller delonghi one with the add on non pressurised portafilta seems to do a better job with a smaller footprint and much less expensive.
I've used 8 different machines over the last 3 years and this wasn't among my favourites except for its size.

    • Which model is this delonghi one please?

  • +2

I've had Bambino Plus for around 2 years now, love it. I grind beans using a Timemore C3 manual grinder, only takes around 30-40 seconds. (Although then another 30-40 seconds to clean out the remaining grounds using a brush)

    • Encore ESP on your radar or do you enjoy the manual process?

      • +1

I don't mind the manual process, means I can grind at 5:30am without waking the kids.

  • My only gripe with mine is that it will - without warning - stop working with some obscure flashing code that mandates the need to immediately commence a 5min cleaning/descaling operation that can not be postponed. Always seems to know the most inopportune time too!

Also there's a few revisions of the Bambino Plus floating around and they have different codes and mechanisms to address. Frustrating when you're in a rush!

    Great coffee though:)

    • from what I read the machine mandate you to do cleaning cycle for every extractions

      • Every 200* extractions, yes.

        The problem is
        1) The machine doesn't indicate when it's nearing 200 extractions
        2) It will not let you finish your current extraction
        3) It will not let you defer even once
        4) It is not immediately obvious what the issue is, unless you've already experienced it
        5) The instructions for the cleaning cycle have not been updated for the updated machine, and there are extra steps that aren't necessary.
