never trust this battery life benchmarks, in real life you will have 5-6 hours max - it's Intel + Windows

I get three hours battery life from my HP laptop on power saving settings. It’s next to useless for working remotely. I’m never touching a HP again as their battery claims I feel are deceitful if not fraudulent.

        • Likewise. Our workplace only use HP and they are all terrible with battery life

  • Finally some decent screens from HP they usually have 250nit. Reviews on this say its good value they have an AMD one too

  • Great deal.

  • The OLED and LCD screen are super nice and bright, good ergonomic but that's about it. Run hot and short because it's Intel and 1 slim fan!

  • @shxhshzhz is there a 15 or 16 inch model of this please. TIA

    • This is the only HP Pavilion that they sell.

@FBI - As a fan of OLED tech and an owner of pretty much the objectively best consumer OLED TV to date the 77” Sony a95L QD-OLED, as well as an LG C9 WOLED TV, I personally would never purchase a laptop with an OLED screen. I wouldn’t feel comfortable with still menus and software being displayed daily for long periods of time on it… I have had the menu layout and icons on an OLED mobile phone screen burn in after about 2 years, and I wouldn’t want to risk it with a computer screen/monitor.

Besides I would never watch movies or TV shows on a tiny 14” screen or 16” screen anyway, and I don’t play PC games, so I don’t see the sense in needing an OLED screen for a laptop. My laptop is connected to a 34” 4K 165Hz ultra wide curved monitor which I mostly use for work. I bought the HP laptop with a 16” WQXGA screen in the following link for $1499 (their RRP was $2399 at the time) at the end of December 2023, I have had no problems with it, it’s been perfect for my needs:

        - same but

not at home but at flight or when on holiday (but desperate to continue a tv show), i will

        • I don’t travel long distances on planes or on planes at all for work, and the majority of people don’t travel on planes for their jobs either. When I go on holiday I don’t take my laptop with me, that’s the last thing I would want to take… The purpose of a holiday is to get away from what you normally/regularly do in your everyday life, and a laptop is just an additional unnecessary thing to carry. I don’t travel on planes all that often, in fact the last time I was on flight was in August 2022, and the majority of flights I have been on have had screens in the back head rest with quite a good selection of recently released content… Unless I’m being a tight arse and decide to fly with say Jetstar for example.

I don’t really ever intend to watch movies and TV shows while I am on holiday, however if I get desperate, every hotel destination I’ve been to has a TV with streaming apps on it that I can login to using one of the several streaming accounts I have… I’m a pretty big physical media enthusiast for high picture and audio quality and other reasons, but I don’t feel the need to rip my collection and take it with me on holiday or everywhere I go, the quality on streaming services suffice while I’m away from home on the mediocre setups that essentially every single form of accomodation has away from home.

      • Agree. With static image elements such as the taskbar on Microsoft Windows, you will experience image burn/retention with an OLED panel.

Other than information displays, a Windows desktop is about as worse a use case for OLED as you can get.

There are various techniques that try to minimise OLED burn/retention but none work well enough to prevent it in these use cases. Also, these techniques such as pixel shift, while not noticeable when using the panel for TV/movie viewing, are noticeable when applied to computer desktop viewing and usually not enabled.

        • wow ok will take note to avoide oled laptop

      • Thank you. I will check the HP out 🙏

  • Will it be better to wait for the Snapdragon PCs?

      Probably yeah

This model seems to be priced around $1200-1300 at JB and HN so not a great deal, but still decent for the specs
$1150 at JB so a saving of $110

  • Is Lenovo Ideapad 5i better option with 1TB SSD instead of OLED display for $899? Thoughts?

    ebay link

    • I'm trying to find details on the I/o.. do these have 2* USB C + 2x USB a + HDMI & ethernet?
I have no interest in OLED considering use case is mostly work so price and other specs are what I would prioritise

      • +1

According to the specs it has the following:

        1 x USB 3.2 Gen 1
        1 x USB 3.2 Gen 1 (Always On)
        2 x USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 (support data transfer, Power Delivery 3.0 and DisplayPort™ 1.4)
        1 x HDMI 1.4b
        1 x microSD card reader
        1 x Headphone / mic

      • Detailed specs are here

        • I find it a bit strange that the ideapad misses out on a TB4 port when both the thinkbook/pad get it.
Edit: not a deal-breaker by any means, but having a TB4 port is a nice feature for down the line when TB4 external storage and peripherals are more widely adopted

          • @DeToxin: Probably because the Ideapad line are their more budget laptops.

    • 16:10 display is a plus. Only 300 nits, but enough unless using outside. If you don't particular want the OLED than the Lenovo is good option. I may be biased as I have 3 in the house.

Is the RAM soldered or upgradable ?

  • Does this laptop run noticeably cooler compared to the Acer Swift Gos and their H-series CPUs?
