I use the DT990 Pro headphones with the G6. Works really well especially with a custom tuned headphone equaliser.

Will this give me full talkie in day of the tentacle ?

    • +3

Only if you have the CD-ROM version as well.

Anyone dealt with CL for returns? Is the free headset actually a signal that they will be a pain in the arse to deal with vs amazon?

Ed - on checking CL's site this is also on sale:

    https://au.creative.com/p/sound-blaster/sound-blaster-gc7

with the same headset for 189.95 if anyone's after one of those.

    • Nice find, I'll add that to the Description in case any one else is looking.

Noob question. What are these used for?

    • +3

They're basically an external sound card for you computer. They work best with headphones as they have headphone amps built in.

That said, I have my DT990 Pro headphones and my Audioengine A5+ speakers connected to the G6.

I am guessing they are infinitely better than the built in mother board sound card?

Are they used primarily for music playback?

        • +5

They shit all over motherboard sound cards, though to be fair the motherboard sound cards have improved greatly over the years.

        • +10

due to Audiophile Reasons some people have headphones that simply can't be driven from a motherboard soundcards header, and need something with an actual power supply (from usb header or wall wart) to drive them. Other reasons might be, the audio on the motherboard has a variety of drawbacks - maybe it has pre-amp or pre-EQ, or poor isolation from electrical signals on the motherboard itself (so your mic or phono out or both always sounds fuzzy no matter what, etc) that make it worthwhile to get an external device to take over from it for sound functions. Or, you have a laptop or a micro PC like an N95 or N100 that simply doesn't have any way to drive anything other than 2 speakers from the 3.5mm jack on it and doesn't have any mic in, or can't do audio out over micro DP, or you need optical out to go to your bargain muteki 7.1 sick bro setup, or whatever.

One thing that might be worth your while as a true ozbargainer to see if your motherboard audio can be salvaged, is the free Equalizer APO and the Peace GUI plugin for it -

          https://sourceforge.net/projects/peace-equalizer-apo-extensi…

basically an unlimited band amp and EQ with many possibilities for use as an audio mangler, and lots of people have made profiles for popular headphone brands for it to give a "neutral" sound by their ears.

I am guessing they are infinitely better than the built in mother board sound card?

Not necessarily. Depends on the specific headphones, depends on the motherboard design, depends on how fussy you are.

If you're a hardcore headphone nut (a phase which I've gone through) you'd regard these as… pretty much the same as motherboard audio for easy to drive headphones. Best thing about it tbh is the big physical volume dial.

Flashback…The last time I bought a sound blaster that was to get away from using the mother board speaker. Had to adjust a few jumpers for iqr on the card add an entry into the boot.bat file.

    • +6

The first time i bought a sound blaster was to play Prince of Persia 2. At that time people generally had beeping sounds from the pc speaker

I think you mean autoexec.bat 😉 ahh DOS days..

      • +1

        That’s it, autoexec.

I recently bought (hasn’t arrived yet) one of these.

    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0C1Y7C9HH

I had a 3C price watch going and it’s come down a fair bit the past two weeks.

They rate really well, for example on Audiosciencereview.

    https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/s…

I currently use an old stereo DAC using the optical output from my PC then into powered audio monitors. The new DAC will replace it so i can use the old one with my Bluray player again.

Plugging straight into my motherboard is very noisy I’ve found. Seems to be from the graphics card.

Nostaligic. I still have the create Sounblaster 5.1 surround sound speaker (satellite) with the subwoofer that I got with a Creative Soundblaster Live soundcard and the software to enable the best sound I have experienced as a kid… oh the memories!
It is collecting dust - wonder if I need this so that I can revive it.

G6 is good. Not sure it can be used properly on the PS5 though with no optical, when I tried the audio sounded horrendous compared to PS4.

  • +1

I just went to get the X4 with the bonus headset and saw there was a 10% discount code (MIDYEAR10) for the whole site, making the total $179.95.

  • For anybody thinking about pairing these with planars forget about it. I just sent the g6 back for return. Volume doesn't seem to be a problem but something sounded off with it so I A/B tested again my fiio k5 pro ess and very clearly with bass heavy music the bass has crackle. Don't think it's a faulty unit, I reckon just not enough power
