realistically, what kind of benefit is there on this kind of outlay over say, a $300 dac?
"We have under $100 DACs outperforming it."

This is not this specific model, but to get the picture of the brand.
you get to tell your friends your dac is worth $5500 but you only paid $3840.
I haven’t read into it but not much really, I’d imagine. Maybe the SNR is higher than cheaper units, maybe it’s made in Germany and has a long warranty and support etc. Really all a DAC is doing is forming an analogue waveform which is as accurate as the frequency and resolution (bits). Anything more than 96kHz, 24-bit and I really doubt there’s anything perceptible to any human in it.
I have a Chinese DAC, was about $120 and can’t remember the brand (can find out if anyone wants), it’s been quite good. Use the USB input. I still get a bit of GPU noise on it but the sound quality is really good otherwise.
I can't recommend the Weiss DAC205 even if it were still being sold. I see used ones as high as $2,000. No justification for that.

You have to feel for the forum member who spends the big bucks, then lends it to Amir expecting to get validation but instead gets a smack in the face.
Surely adding USB connection and internal power supply won't kill their profit margin?
Nah, but it'd kill the product.
At this level of expense you're going for a proper transformer and a million capacitors to get the cleanest power signal possible. You're paying for the engineering, not the parts.
Is there a measurable difference? Yes, it's measurable. Can I hear the difference? No way in hell lol. But some people think they can and who am I to burst their bubble?
This or RTX5090?
The Weiss should still sound pretty good in 10 years time, if you play the long game.
You will probably have close to $2k left over if u get this
If you spend $3840 on a DAC, your whole system should be worth 50k+ or you're wasting your $$.
Your next purchase should be $10k speak cables while you're at it.
Will pair well with my Anko headphones
