10% off Good Food Restaurant Gift Cards Delivered (Digital & Physical) + 1% Payment Surcharge @ GoodFood.gift

FOODIE10

This deal was posted by someone else who took it down as they wanted to remain anonymous. I've decided to repost it as it seems to be an offer related to Australian Financial Review subscribers.

Not as good as the 15% off discount offered on Mother's Day last year. The Good Food gift card is part of the TCN network, so if you opt for the digital version, you will be able to download the TCN app off your respective App Store and digitally manage your card (view balances, add to wallet) to your mobile phone easily.

It's recommended that you purchase the Digital version of the card, as there are conflicting reports on OzBargain whether the Physical version is accepted as widely as the Digital version.

Where can I use this card?

Visit the OzBargain Gift Card FAQ Wiki to find out where this card is accepted.

But TLDR: The digital version of this gift card can only be used at merchants using the following MCCs that choose to accept prepaid Mastercard gift cards:

  • 5812: Bars, Cocktail Lounges, Discotheques, Nightclubs and Taverns–Drinking Places (Alcoholic Beverages).
  • 5813: Eating Places and Restaurants

This pretty much means you have to spend it at sit-down restaurants and pubs, and won't be able to spend it on fast food places with an MCC of 5814. However, you can spend it on DoorDash as it has an MCC of 5812.

Did you know we have a Wiki for MCC's as well?.

    Does it work on eatclub?

    • +3

Yes when paying with the EatClub app card, it uses MCC 5812

      • Some food apps now stop you from adding these giftcards as a payment before you reach the final checkout. So, best to confirm. Eatclub should be nice still from my thought.

        • +1

I have already used this successfully with EatClub (A few months ago).
When you pay with the EatClub card, it will in turn charge the Good Food card the discounted amount

  • Hope this deal last long enough so that I can combine with https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/849171, not sure if it would work or not

    • Update: Vanilla mastercard works!

      • How did you get it to work? Keep getting there was an error adding this card..

        • +1

          I entered the details directly

      • Could you explain how this works please? Is this correct:

        1) buy Vanilla Mastercard from a Woolies store for $507.95 - gain 2,500 worth of Qantas Points

        2) use that $500 card to buy a $500 Good food Gift Card for $455

        3) have a prepaid Visa card with $45 left over

        Is that correct ? Thanks

        • Correct. Though I used hsbc debit and split payment of $99 to get 2% cashback, as currently I don’t have credit card to churn

          • @RTY: I also have this card - woolies allowed 5x individual transactions of $99 for a single item?

            • @GReeeeN: They don't have a limit. I also used BOQ for 1c x5 to complete monthly tasks.

  • How easy is it to pay using these gift cards? I have a few reservations in the coming months at places like Lumi and Perermen, can I pay with 2-3 different gift cards?

    • Depends on if the restaurant accepts split payments, and how many they allow in one transaction

  • Some places add a fee for using the restaurant choice digital gift cards in a wallet… like a credit card surcharge, although they don't usually if you have the physical card.. do they do the same with this one? Always having to keep that in mind when paying, esp for small balances… have to work out what fee they will add to know if how much to tell them to use so you pretty much use the last of the balance

    • The difference in fee is most likely due to Least Cost Routing and credit card transaction fees are usually different across the different credit card networks. Some debit cards are dual network (e.g can be a combo of VISA + EFTPOS) and LCR ensures that your payment goes through whatever network charges less. The TCN cards are single network only hence the fee.

although that's just my guess and I don't know enough to tell you how everything works in their backend.

    • some places have a surcharge for Mastercard/Visa (digital Good Food card), but not eftpos (physical)

  • Can this go into Samsung Wallets?

  • -2

    20% in 2021, then 15%, now 10% and less?

Restaurant gift cards got beaten by the food delivery from the look of them.

    • This is the first year I have a phone which can use a digital wallet :/

    • also, they used to be physical cards that had to be used at certain restaurants, now it has changed that you can use them at any restaurant/bar etc with the right MCC…but the other things that eat into the 10% discount is the 1% payment fee they charge and the payment acceptance fees at some places using a digital card….charging for using visa/mastercard etc….whatever % they add to the bill when you use this payment method.

  • It's recommended that you purchase the Digital version of the card, as the OzBargain consensus is that the Physical version is limited to specific venues listed on the Good Food website.

eftpos Prepaid Gift Card Conditions of Use (Terms & Conditions)

    • This Card is a restricted access network gift card that can be used for electronic transactions, to purchase goods and services at selected merchants that have the designated merchant category code ‘Eating Places’ or ‘Drinking Places’. The card is not valid at will not work at venues outside of these merchant category codes. Specifically the card is not valid at venues that are designated by their merchant category code as Fast food or quick service restaurants. Gift cards are still subject to individual merchant acceptance and in accordance with these Terms & Conditions and any applicable law and subject always to the individual trading terms of each participating merchant.

    • I changed the description to reflect the fact that the physical version probably only works at the restaurants listed on the Good Food website, because there has been conflicting reports as to where the physical version actually works.

      • There has been a few reports in recent months where the Good Food gift card was being declined at merchants that probably should have accepted it. Example 1, Example 2, Example 3.

      • The part you bolded for the physical Good Food gift card says:

This Card is a restricted access network gift card that can be used for electronic transactions, to purchase goods and services at selected merchants that have the designated merchant category code ‘Eating Places’ or ‘Drinking Places’.

I interpret that to mean that only some merchants with MCC 5812 and MCC 5813 accept the physical Good Food gift cards, especially since that wording is not used for the digital version, but it is ambiguous.

I changed the description to reflect the fact that the physical version probably only works at the restaurants listed on the Good Food website

most of the places that accept it for me aren’t listed :)

I interpret that to mean that only some merchants with MCC 5812 and MCC 5813 accept the physical Good Food gift cards, especially since that wording is not used for the digital version.

interestingly, i’ve had the physical Restaurant Card accepted at places that declined the digital version

i wonder if the reason for the differences in acceptance between cards that are restricted to the same MCCs, is that merchants have had their terminals set to decline those particular issuers and/or cards?

        • most of the places that accept it for me aren’t listed

          Gahhhh, even more conflicting reports!

I changed the description to reflect that there are conflicting reports as to how widely the physical gift cards are accepted. I originally thought that your position was the correct one, but all those reports I saw in recent months really made me doubt it…

i wonder if the reason for the differences in acceptance between cards that are restricted to the same MCCs, is that merchants have had their terminals set to decline those particular issuers and/or cards?

I actually see the digital Good Food gift card and physical Good Food gift card as two separate products, because they have different issuers (Indue and EML, respectively). That means they may have different rules as to when to approve or decline attempted transactions. (For example, a digital TCN Restuarant gift card should work at MCC 5814, whereas a physical TCN Restaurant gift card should block MCC 5814.)

Having said that, you also have a point. A merchant’s EFTPOS terminal can be set up to reject some card types, but not others.

          • I once had a restaurant tell me they contacted Commonwealth Bank (their EFTPOS provider) to block prepaid eftpos gift cards, because restaurant management believed they would reduce their exposure to fraudulent transactions. I suspect this was done based on BINs usually used by physical prepaid eftpos gift cards.

          • Another time, I went to a café where the EFTPOS terminal was so old that it could not process payments from a mobile wallet, but it was perfectly happy to process payments when I swiped a physical card.

          • @WookieMonster:

(For example, a digital TCN Restaurant gift card should work at MCC 5814, whereas a physical TCN Restaurant gift card should block MCC 5814.)

            actually, both should be blocked:

unlike the Good Food Gift Card (digital), which doesn't specifically exclude fast food, but in fact does in practice

            • @tonester: Correct, MCC 5814 is supposed to be blocked on both versions of the TCN Restaurant gift card. However, there have been multiple reports for at least a couple of years that it works at MCC 5814. After multiple discussions with different people, it appears the digital version works at MCC 5814, but the physical version does not.

I think the reason the TCN Restaurant gift card specifically excludes Fast Food Restaurants is that it originally to say nothing about that MCC, but TCN apparently updated their terms in 2020 to specifically exclude Fast Food Restaurants.

  • I am unable to view my card number or add to wallet in the TCN app. Keep telling me internal server error. Anyone experienced this? Terrible experience wound not do this again

    • it’s affecting all cards - they’re trying to fix it

      • now fixed :)

        • Thank you. I was trying to make it work at a restaurant yesterday ended up paying by my own card😡

  • Just thought to share, not sure if everyone had the same issue. I was charged cash advanced fee $8.19 for paying $273 for a $300 gc by using a CBA CC.

Got refunded after dealing with online chat, below is how it was explained:

“Some Gift card purchases are seen as cash for cash. And also how the merchant processes it. When I checked. It was done as a cash base payment.

    Interest of Cash advance are charged to your Credit Card when you make any of the below transactions, as they are deemed to be cash withdrawals rather than the purchase of goods or services;
    - Withdrawing cash from an ATM or from a store at the point of sale
    - Transferring money from your credit card account to another account or failed Auto Pay
    - Buying money transfers or travellers cheques
    - Gambling and other cash equivalent transactions

So as this is a gift card it would be classed as cash equivalent transaction.”

I am still confused , never happened to other gc portal

    • I am not a Commbank customer but with HSBC. Never been slugged Cash Advance on any type of gift card or stored value purchases before.

This gift card should not be considered as a cash equivalent, seeing that it has so many MCC restrictions that determine where you can use it. In comparison to Prepaid Visa or Mastercards which are more universal and can be spent almost anywhere.

    • The MCC used on the website in this deal is something I have never seen before: MCC 6540.

In terms of how Mastercard classifies this MCC, it is very confusing.

The Mastercard Quick Reference Booklet calls this MCC "Funding Transaction", but only describes this MCC as follows:

Identifies a Funding Transaction, as described in section 6.6 of the Transaction Processing Rules.

Section 6.6 of the Mastercard Transaction Processing Rules does not really actually shed much more light on what a Funding Transaction is, although it does note it is related to the Mastercard MoneySend and Funding Transactions Program Standards. A quick search for that turns up this link, which strongly suggests Funding Transactions are to do with the transfer of funds to and from Mastercards.

However, if we look at the Visa definition for this MCC, it makes more sense as to why the website in this deal uses this MCC.

Visa calls MCC 6540 "Non-Financial Institutions – Stored Value Card Purchase/Load", and describes it in its Data Standards Manual as follows:

This MCC must be used by Merchants whose primary business is the sale of and/or any subsequent reloads of stored value cards/accounts (including Visa Prepaid Cards) occurring at non-financial institutions. This MCC is not applicable for use with Staged Digital Wallet Operators (SDWO).

If you look at how AUSTRAC defines stored value cards, it actually includes gift cards.

I have never seen any other gift card portals be classified as MCC 6540, but if you go off the Visa definition for it, it appears to be an appropriate MCC for the website in this deal.

I would be hesitant to use a Commonwealth Bank credit card to purchase gift cards online, as it has a history of considering the purchase of gift cards as a cash advance, rather than a regular purchase. The two examples that come to mind are:

My guess is that Commonwealth Bank saw how Mastercard treats MCC 6540 (i.e. the transfer of funds) and chose to designate that as a cash advance.
