I have seen examples of price jacking and not. I think best practice is to check with a different browser every time.
It's worth doing a search via the Tripadvisor platform too (incognito mode). I've picked up some good discounts that way - usually on smaller providers such as Trip, Vio etc.
I've just done this on a stay in Malaysia - Booking.com was one of the highest prices of all. even after cashback.
Yup it pays to shop around with everyone. Take Japan for example, Expedia gave me much better prices (20-40%) than Booking.com with the highest Genius discount applied. Then the Expedia reward dollars were applied for further bookings.
Totally agree, I have had more luck with Expedia then Booking.com in my experience. That said it is important to shop around.
Ta! We need more people like you on this platform!
Thanks for your research. I do the same thing with booking.com. Also worth checking the price using their app, it's often cheaper.
I found that 80% of Ctrip (China trip) is much cheaper than trip. I don’t know why, so I always use Ctrip, trip, booking, and agoda to compare prices.
RIP for those of us who can't read Chinese
use translator extension
Thanks I'm going to give this a go
Found no jacking this time, yay :)
Be careful of scams when using booking.com.
what do you mean by scams? Are you able to elaborate a bit?
I think he means where booking.com hotels or hackers were contacting people directly and getting them to pay before staying and when they stayed the hotels said no, we haven't charged you, you were scammed
Lol. I must say that's very creative
@easternculture: I read that, pretty amazing they managed to get the messages to come from the Booking.com platform… I would have totally been scammed.
A known issue that has existed for several years but booking.com has seemingly never done anything to address it.
Admittedly it's the booking.com partner hotels that are being phished, but booking.com is doing the classic business thing to help … nothing. Their partners and customers are on their own, and booking.com just ignores it and hopes the news cycle moves on.
It flared up in Australia particularly late last year and early this year, before going quiet again. Some example articles:-

Still waiting on cashback from a 31st Dec 2023 stay, lodged the delay April and asked for an update in May but still waiting.
Maybe better if you can find a better price upfront than waiting 5+ months for cashback.
Same issue here. My cash back that I’m owed is substantial and they seem to be deliberately stalling. I’ve never had issue when I’m due smallish amounts
I messaged gotyourback and they said they have not heard from booking.com even after all this time and to wait to hear from them. Not promising after 5 months.
Can't speak for all possible booking combinations but i did some test bookings yesterday in anticipation of this. Those that weren't price jacked yesterday (with or without cashback) were not price jacked today - nice!
Those that were price jacked yesterday, were price jacked today (by the same amount, i think)Pays to double check each hotel you want to book at least the following scenarios - it's annoying but booking.com is very sneaky!!
* Without cashback on your desktop (logged in to account)
* Without cashback on your phone (logged in)
* With cashback on desktop (logged in to account)

How does this work with the pay at property/on the day bookings?
Going through drama waiting for Booking.com to refund a cancelled refundable booking paid directly to the property. Various messages telephone calls and emails but no payment from 22/4/24 cancellation. Internet full of similar blogs. This mob are criminals holding onto customers and properties monies.ACCC needs to fire up big time. Property has stopped communicating and messages history deleted. Very suss.
Charge back?
Just be mindful
Last time i clicked the cashback and it tracked all the hotels went up by 15+%Pretty dodgy behaviour by booking.com
yeah whenever I have the "In partnership with Shopback" banner on the top of the page, the prices (at least for the place I'm looking at) are more than 15% higher.
Thanks for sharing! Just booked my Tokyo and Osaka accomodation! Not sure if prices were jacked or not but the logged in price + cashback made some pretty sweet deals
what accom did you choose for tokyo if u dont mind sharing
I booked "Minn Ueno-Iriya"
Travelling with my wife, 2 kids and my parents and their superior suite and superior family rooms looked great. I think it worked out to be $70pp/pn and everyone gets their own bed.
Eligible for cashback if you pay just before booking date/pay at venue or does it have to be immediate pay?
I would like to know this too. Mine is zero payment until a couple days before the booking date.
Pay at venue for me
Cool. Thanks for posting OP. Tracked after 2 hrs.
The price for a hotel I've been looking at is $917 when I don't go through shopback and $1,019 when clicking through shopback… really dodgy.
Another different place I booked earlier was the same price for both Shopback and non-Shopback, so it isn't all dodgy but just need to make sure
Bought some accommodation in Zurich and in Geneva, an amazing deal and cheers OP
In my case the price through Shopback is $2060, and when logged out of Shopback it's $1944. Dodgy indeed, even if the Shopback amount exceeds the price jack.
Interesting that the confirmation emails with Shopback don't specify the cashback amount. The ones booked with Cashrewards explicitly say how much cashback to expect.
Just noticed that there’s a list of about 2000 excluded items from adidas cashback in ShopBack under exclusions… Bought pair of gazelle shoes that’s listed in the sheet, pretty crap if cashback gets invalidated…
Wow thanks for letting us know. I've never seen that sheet before. Maybe something new? I was excited about the 35% cashback (St G included) but it seems too risky now!
Yeah it most be new, I haven’t seen it before too. Crazy that there’s close to 2000 items listed on it! That’s close to all items on sale lol
Plus it's hard to make out what some of those codes on the sheet are referring to on the actual adidas website 🤯
I just did a test with a hotel I visit regularly for 5 nights since a lot of people experience "price jacking" on some properties.
Direct: $1030
Booking.com Incognito: $885
Signed in: $583 + room upgrade
Through Shopback signed in: $583 + room upgrade.
