2024 Volkswagen Golf GTI with Luxury and Sound & Style Packs $59,990 Driveaway (Was $62,690+ORC) @ Volkswagen Dealers

1245

1 June 2024 1pm update: We requested and received a call back from VW. The $59,990 driveaway price is obtainable only through the customers making direct contact with a VW dealer via telephone or in-store visits. — Mod.

Ok gas guzzling carcenogenic creating fume lovers! Avoid the green washing child labour lithium, cobalt and manganese mining EV trends and happily overtly destroy the planet with your brand new Golf GTI with bonus packages that include very vegan-unfriendly leather seats at a new special drive away price!

The $6600 worth of extra equipment combines with the waived on-road costs to save upwards of $8000 in some states and territories, given the drive-away price is being offered nationally, with Sydney-based customers scoring a $7990 discount by the time the GTI is in their garage.

Honestly it's not a deal for me, having now realised that even a cheap and nasty Chinese EV/hybrid has an unmatched price to performance ratio that even the good ol'Golf GTI can't match (e.g. Family friendly BYD Sealion Premium 0-100kmh in 5.9s vs shoebox Golf GTI 6.4s). But I'm sure the last run of ICE performance cars/hot hatches will be seriously collectable and appreciate in value if looked after - just have no idea how you'll fuel them in ~10yrs time. Just look at the prices of some ancient Evos or WRX STIs fetching more than they were brand new.

Mod note: We are unable to obtain this price from VW's car configurator. On 30 May 2024 the quoted driveaway price was $67,980. On 1 June 2024 the quoted driveaway price was $62,720. Our guess is this EOFY sale is not yet active.

You can get a Tiguan 162TSI R-line for under $62k…seems pointless to spend so much on a hatchback.

  • You can tell who are the low IQ people here when they say XYZ car is better without even knowing what they're talking.

The fact is this faster than a Golf R Mk6, 7, 7.5. You have a comfortable front wheel drive car that is pushing old Porsche Cayman and Audi RS4 lap times.

    • Not sure how "faster than X" equates to "better", given the overwhelming majority of these will be driven on congested metro roads. Acceleration etc is irrelevant when most of driving is during peak commute hours.

      • How is sitting in a petrol car with the same interior better in peak hour? I mean by the definition they are worse than EVs because they cost more to run in peak commutes?

        • I never said it was, just that wanking off to how "fast" something is relative to another is pointless given the state of the roads & the traffic in major Australian cities.

          • @Ham Dragon: I think men have been comparing how fast cars are since the dawn of cars being driven on roads. We've had traffic jams for the past 30 years. Still didn't stop people buying WRXs etc

    • Low IQ?

      Wow.

      • +2

It's an inverse relationship between one's IQ and how often they drop IQ in a conversation

    • The fact is this faster than a

      powaaaaaah!!! manuall!!!!! 😈

  • Anyone else surprised how much these cars cost? Costs more than an equivalent EV?

Do not buy this car. The car drives well, but the entertainment system is a turd. Here’s a list of all the software bugs I’ve encountered and complained to VW about, but have not all been fixed.

    • speed limiter shuts off without warning while driving
    • warning lights and alerts for all driver assistance systems turning on simultaneously while driving under normal conditions and doesn’t disappear until restarting
    • parking sensors shows error and only fixes itself until hours later
    • slow startup on infotainment
    • unresponsive and laggy infotainment when using climate control
    • no sound through car speakers until restart
    • CarPlay disconnecting after taking phone calls
    • wireless charging pad unreliable
    • audio profile settings do not save
    • drive profile does not save

Hell, for the first year of ownership, there wasn’t even a setting to turn on/off daylight savings until they updated the software.

The dealership service staff are idiots, and the VW head office customer support are monkeys. Thank god they finally let me speak directly with a foreman at a VW dealership who actually gets it.

Never had any of these issues in the Mk7 Golf.

    • this is kinda the list I was looking for.

but one I was expecting is not on the list. I don't have a car but drove a newer tiguan and it has this problem where you are doing 70 and have like 3 second+ gap between you and the car in front and the car has a distance sensor which has a tantrum and thinks you are going to ram into the car infront thats not even close and slams the breaks on all by itself for like 1 second. happened twice and it really gives you a shock because you aren't expecting it at all. owner said "it just does that sometimes" I told them they should turn it off and I turned it off for them in the settings.

I think it happened both times when the car infront was starting to slow down, but it gets the calculation wrong or something and thinks you are going to hit it even though you are already on the breaks and not even close to behind the car.

Hateful and offensive description… is this how we supposed to post a bargain?

    • +2

Gross isn’t? EV lovers are the most irritating people on the internet.

      • +2

Ha dunno - seen some pretty obnoxious EV haters posts also.

Can't believe it causes such a rift. Jeez just buy whatever the hell makes you happy and leave the snide comments out of it for people who choose other things. Why get so riled up life is way too short?

Used to be far more friendly when it was all Ford vs Holden (more in jest)

But these days Buy Apple - or Buy Android, Buy Tesla or Buy RAM seems to cause such a stir it confounds me.

I don't get it but make it go away!

        • +1

haha yep. Doesnt help set the tone when the description is full of it from the get go.

The Holden and Ford battle was all in good fun and everyone was just having a laugh. No one is laughing in the EV Vs ICE stuff, somehow its personal.

          • +1

@Brick Tamland: I don't know, I'm still laughing at how passionate people are about what car other people buy

    • +1

is this how we supposed to post a bargain?

You haven't even posted a single deal since you joined OzB almost 5 years ago. I don't think you are in a position to lecture anyone. Also, do you know what sarcasm is? Because OP was being sarcastic in the description and for some reason you got offended.

  • This deal is weird. At the time of me posting it is at 95 upvotes, but of those only 3 people have actually posted a comment. I don't think I've ever seen a more neutral comment section. Just upvoting for the lols of the description?

  • How's VW gearboxes these days? I remember my mk5 gti mechatronic was POS, swapped once and still got annoying shuddering issue, once warranty expired, sold that asap!

  • Do these golf gtis still have mechatronic dsg problems or is it all solved now ?

do yourself a favour and skip the shitwagen. Golf GTI isn't what it used to be (and it never was perfect to begin with)

  • SIXTY GRAND for a Golf GTi?!?

I love how everyone thinks that performance is only 0-100 ?

The beauty of a good ICE is you can feel when the power comes on just before an apex. An EV just spins then torque steers.

There is a lot more to a good “performance” car than going in a straight line.

So until EVs can fix how a car is meant to corner … ICE ICE baby !

BTW … IMO $60k for a GTi is absolutely ridiculous.

    • At what point do you reach for the tissues?

      • just after the apex and just before the 'ICE ICE baby!'

  • Not sure about this but Chinese EVs should be better buy due to the free trade tariff and being the major supply chains.
    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-05-31/chinese-cars-third-mo…

    • The graph shows Chinese numbers started increasing when covid lockdowns started. Is it purely related to financial pressures, as opposed to buyers preferring the cars?
      .

      • Growing consumer awareness, cost competitiveness, technological advances and a cut in tariffs
…consumers that want to support our allied countries, and continue to buy very expensive EVs made in Germany, the US," she said.

Yeah pricing was one for the change. Also, I remembered people had to preorder and wait for 1-2 years for the supply. While second hand car market got inflated til today. The other graph shows sales in 2023 and that's current.

  • I hope they ship these with a free monkey 🤡

I bought my MY16 GTI golf for 40,100 as demo in 2017
This should be the right price to pay for this car.
Now owning MODEL Y, product of a next level.

  • Lots of off topic comments. Anyway who's buying?
