2024 Volkswagen Golf GTI with Luxury and Sound & Style Packs $59,990 Driveaway (Was $62,690+ORC) @ Volkswagen Dealers

1245

1 June 2024 1pm update: We requested and received a call back from VW. The $59,990 driveaway price is obtainable only through the customers making direct contact with a VW dealer via telephone or in-store visits. — Mod.

Ok gas guzzling carcenogenic creating fume lovers! Avoid the green washing child labour lithium, cobalt and manganese mining EV trends and happily overtly destroy the planet with your brand new Golf GTI with bonus packages that include very vegan-unfriendly leather seats at a new special drive away price!

The $6600 worth of extra equipment combines with the waived on-road costs to save upwards of $8000 in some states and territories, given the drive-away price is being offered nationally, with Sydney-based customers scoring a $7990 discount by the time the GTI is in their garage.

Honestly it's not a deal for me, having now realised that even a cheap and nasty Chinese EV/hybrid has an unmatched price to performance ratio that even the good ol'Golf GTI can't match (e.g. Family friendly BYD Sealion Premium 0-100kmh in 5.9s vs shoebox Golf GTI 6.4s). But I'm sure the last run of ICE performance cars/hot hatches will be seriously collectable and appreciate in value if looked after - just have no idea how you'll fuel them in ~10yrs time. Just look at the prices of some ancient Evos or WRX STIs fetching more than they were brand new.

Mod note: We are unable to obtain this price from VW's car configurator. On 30 May 2024 the quoted driveaway price was $67,980. On 1 June 2024 the quoted driveaway price was $62,720. Our guess is this EOFY sale is not yet active.

            • @tp0: be aware the build dates of some of these cars can be a very long time in the past (as in some as far back as 2022). Might not concern you now but if you keep it 3 years, it will be considered a 4-5 year old car in trade in value.

            • +1

@tp0: even those demo discounts is small fry discount compared to what I'm expecting from them.

For example, its been reported in different markets around 15% discount. So for those LR atto3 you're talking about 7.5k-8k discount, anything less I think is just a teaser to see how many suckers it'll bring in.

              • @cloudy: They’ve shown they’re happy to sit on stock for a looooong time. We’ll see if they ever actually cave and offer the discount you’re suggesting.

                • @tp0: It'll all depend on how many they tempt with small discounts or rebates. They don't want to drop prices as car hire companies hate it, but they are being left behind by others if they don't. So we'll see, but my crystal ball has been pretty good in this area for a couple of years.

        • Thought about the seal u? much larger and is a phev

      • Interested to see how the sealion 6 drive's, no stock to test drive in WA yet

        • Like a big, soft SUV. Don't know why it's being mentioned in the same breath as the GTI.

          • @tp0: Seal is faster at the lights, arguably more practical and at least 5k cheaper. But not for driving experience.

    • +1

Their long term safety is not fully proved. Owning a car is not same as owning a phone or other portable toy.

  • +2

if only the chinese included hot hatches while flooding the market with extremely cheap mass produced petrol cars like MGs and Havals. It would have been interesting to get a cheap hot hatch for less than 40k one last time before batteries take over.

  • +13

Honestly it's not a deal for me, having now realised that even a cheap and nasty Chinese EV/hybrid has an unmatched price to performance ratio that even the good ol'Golf GTI can't match (e.g. Family friendly BYD Sealion Premium 0-100kmh in 5.9s vs shoebox Golf GTI 6.4s). But I'm sure the last run of ICE

    This

    • +7

Totally this. Spending $60K one an ICE when you can get a model 3 or sealion that has instant acceleration, doesn’t require servicing nor requires liquified dinosaurs.

      • +1

But this one has a turbo!

      • A Model 3 or Sealion is only fast in a straight line. These aren't good track cars, the GTI is.

      • +4

So much wrong in your reply.

        • They provide instant torque which gives you faster acceleration.
        • They still require servicing, just less often.
        • Most users in 2024 are burning coal (solid dinosaurs) to charge their EV's.
        • +1

You going to get smacked by the EV lovers lol

          • +2

@boomramada: I like EV's. What I need from a car isn't yet available from the EV manufacturers.

            • +1

@Muzeeb: Yeah, I don't have any issues with EV lovers, vegans or apple lovers, oops, did I just put them all into one category, my bad.

          • @boomramada: Truth hurts

Unlikely to be that low - Performancedrive tested it when it came out and got 6.44s

Model 3 RWD will be faster IRL
    Much Cheaper to run
    More reliable
    More cargo space

    • -2

But still depreciates faster than the rate of battery discharge. Isn't it like $5k per year in RRP alone?

      • +1

There is some irony in posting about rrp depreciation in a deal for a car with depreciated rrp

This is where all ICE cars are heading. They are getting too expensive and sales will shift to EVs. Expect more cuts especially in performance cars that can’t match EV performance

        • I can see where we heading, China controlling the car industry which includes raw materials.

  • anyone keeping Lexus LC500 for resale as a 'classic'?

  • +10

Strange old world on OzB, when the value of a motor car seems to be entirely based on its 0-100 acceleration time.

    • +2

Yep - had a mk7.5 - handling wise shits all over my tesla 3 and was a lot more fun to drive - however got rid of vw due numerous leaks.

    • Time is money!

    • +2

Um, it's a Golf GTI, of course it's 0-100 time is going to be important.

      • "Um, it's a Golf GTI, of course it's 0-100 time is going to be important"
Um, it's a Golf GTI, of course it's the way it handles that is going to be important
        .

    • Seems to be getting more important as it’s getting less interesting. Most things are quick-ish these days.

  • +3

At this rate we'll be posting Coles "price be down" as deals.

  • +2

Good to see some insane prices starting to cool.

As for where you will find petrol in 10 years time. Probably the same places you find it now.

    • I'm not sure, we'll have to ask Mr. Volk and see.

      This is a car though

  • +4

Even at this price I am sure there is a lot of fat built into it. Peugeot recently slashed $25K off their EV price gives me an indication of how much car dealers are bending us over.

  • Get an i30N instead, or better yet, save money and get a Cerato GT

  • +3

Save yourself a headache - MK8 Golf and everything that is build in the same platform is full of issues with electronics that are still not resolved 4+ years since release. There are much better vehicles for the money. This is from personal experience, unfortunately.

    • +1

Get the buckets, if you buy that many might create a shortage and can flip them for a profit.

      • yes and then buy 2 Golf GTIs

probably will still have about five lifetime supply of buckets left at that point

    • obviously this, its a high yield investment, no one ever said that about buckets

not trying to start a war on here, but had viewed this on YouTube: A TED talk from 4 years ago
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S1E8SQde5rk&ab_channel=TEDxT…

    short and long:
    he claims:
    1. batteries that make your car go 300km on "1 tank" are "Net less C02" on environment - over life of car
    2. batteries that make your car go 600km on "1 tank" are "Net more than an equivalent petrol car on environment - over life of car.
    3. Hybrids are they answer at this point in time.

    is this information still relevant?
Did it hold any truth and does it hold truth now?

Thank you collective ozbargain brains trust! I have faith in your wisdom!

    • -1

EVangelicals have become more annoying than vegans of 5 years ago.
EVs will be great and make ICE unnecessary when the battery packs are compact, weigh no more than 50kg can get a range of 800km (min) and can be easily and economically be swapped out when they fail. Also, batteries need to be 100% recycled at the expense of the car manufacturer.

    • +3

Did it hold any truth and does it hold truth now?

Yes and yes sort of, but you can't have rational arguments with religious zealots.

EV's are great at some things, and for that market they will clearly be the better option. But they are not great at some other things, and for those they won't (for a little while at least).

The idea that they will somehow save 'the planet' whatever that means, is preposterous once you weigh up the total possible savings in emissions vs the emissions required to get there. The government has done these figure, it's in the low single digits percentages, yet we march on, burning billions of dollars for the crusade!

Onwards EV soldiers, marching as to war…

    • +4

This analysis reckons the CO2 break-even point for EV's is 38,000km when charged with the grid, with average emissions reducing over time as the grid decarbonises. If you charge it from your rooftop solar its about 23K kms.

Keep in mind this analysis is strictly focused on CO2 emissions, and does not take into account environmental damage due to oil extraction for ICEV's or mineral extraction for EV batteries.

      • +1

Would have been interesting if they included maintenance in those comparisons (though may be hard to calculate). Normal replacement parts like oils, belts, pumps, tyres (typically wear quicker on EVs?), brakes (wear slower on EVs with regen braking?) and even engine or battery replacements.

I often hear how EVs are "maintenance free", it would be good to have some data around that.

        • Lol my Tesla was crippled by the 12V battery failing. They still need some maintenance

        • I'd say that analysis would get pretty complex, as reliability and service requirements vary a fair bit across ICEV brands and models, heck even EV service requirements vary.

          🤷‍♂️

    • This is why I posted this question here, rather than the EVangelicals battery channel, the zealots get angry when I have challenged on other platforms their pre-suppositions. They have gotten Angry, don't address a question, then insult you when you try and present and argument.

The day and the age we live in eye roll

      • +1

Yeah either way I think the Ted talk conclusion is correct, that an eclectic mix of different vehicle powerplants be used to best suit individual situations.

Unfortunately some people have turned it into a moral crusade, facts and logic be damned.

  • +2

The styling must be very perception specific. I've never owned a GTI or R but it's simply because I've never liked the look. To me they went from boxy to boring.

I ended up getting the Giulietta QV in 2016 (and no - I've had no issues thank you) without regrets. The Golf was on the menu at the time, but the look of the Alfa was (and still is) just much nicer.

I will 100% agree they're great little hot hatches though.

For me personally I would just like the thing to be "sexier". Try some new look concepts. I almost want an good (italian?) designer to be contracted by VW to have a crack at designing a new look. I would so buy one if it looked better.

The USA imposed a $4.3B penalty on Volkswagen. Australia fined VW $125M. The scandal happened a decade ago and it's time to move on.

      • No thanks, they plead guilty, they are criminals. Why did the prices go up? Maybe trying to recoup the $4.3B from the gullibles.

      • +1

Indeed. I got a payout from VW for my diesel Jetta (which was a great car BTW).

Yep, move on. I'd still buy a VW over some EV shitbox made by slaves of the CCP (I'm not anti-EV, far from it, but I don't want one made by the CCP).

        • Martin Bryant, he just killed 35 people, it was 28 years ago, move on.

VW exhaust cheat device, estimated to have contributed to the early death of 1200 people in Europe and 60 people in the US.

Why support them? They make rubbish cars that aren't durable and cost a bomb to service and maintain. But they look cool

          • +2

@Brian McGee: Lots of contradictions, hypocrisy, double standards in the World. You could push back against them all but you're better off choosing your fights wisely - otherwise you'll go bonkers. I've had a few VWs in my driving life - some excellent, others not so. The only diesel one was a VW Jetta that I bought in 2010 and sold last year. It was an excellent car that was, overall, super reliable. It was insanely economical if driven carefully but was capable of 200kph+ if pushed.

I'm happy to buy another VW in future.

            • @R4: Good for you, I'll choose not to.

You could push back against them all but you're better off choosing your fights wisely - otherwise you'll go bonkers.

              Totally agree, 100%.
I don't see the point of wasting millions chasing an ex president because he paid off a pronstar, but people that intentionally poison society leading to early death, I think that's a hill I can stand on.

    • You migh as well add the crimes of Hitler / Nazi regime….

      • Funny how I never bring that up but get blamed for it.

"even a cheap and nasty Chinese EV/hybrid has an unmatched price to performance ratio that even the good ol'Golf GTI can't match"

0-100 times and 1/4mile times are not the be all and end all of performance.
The car still needs to handle well, plus be entertaining to drive.

    • Instant torque even on a 7.5s 0-100 car feels incredible especially since everyday driving really caps your speeds at 60-70kmh. Turbo lag from a 2.0ltr or even smaller is not entertaining until you hit full boost.

  • +2

0-100 acceleration times are only one part of a car’s performance. Electric will always win in acceleration but lose out everywhere else. Except for a few EV’s that is a bettee option.

But claiming some Chinese EV’s are better because of faster acceleration is plain wrong.

    • +3

Don't diss until you've driven. For everyday driving EV entertainment factor wins hands down. High powered ICE cars are mostly turbo driven and until it hits boost the thrill factor is lacking. Once you hit boost you are almost always over the speed limit so it's hard on the breaks to slow down. All noise, no go. I speak from experience having owned and driven turbo cars in the past.
The absence of engine noise and pssssshhttt fffttt fttt ffttt sucks though.

    • So whats the golf better at?

  • +3

Oh, gone are the days when the GTI was $39,990, and the R had a V6.

  • +1

All the new Electric cars have made the Golf very undesirable.

  • +2

As a person who had a used gti, a new R & Passat., these cars are a money pit…

  • +4

family member owned a golf, it developed electrical issues and the dealer would charge a couple of hundred every time for parts and labour. The issue wasn't fixed after several visits. A complaint was raised with HQ which they responded dealers are independent and they cant do anything about it and the dealer claimed all the visits were for separate issues, yeh nah to vws

    • +1

I cant seem to edit my original post but I wanted to add some further context to the same experience I mentioned above

my family member would go back to the dealer in a matter of days with the same issue and the dealer would say labour is free, pay for parts and it kept going on and on, well why would the dealer suggest and agree to do it labour free if it was a separate issue? the underlying fault is both VW make unreliable cars and dealers dont know how to fix those issues

  • +1

VW? Nah, thanks, they are too arrogant. They don't even try to provide local APAC language support in their enfortaiment system for at least 10 years? Every time I play a Asian language song other than English, I can only see the scrambled blocks on the screen. I don't believe they can't do it but this is more about their attitude issue.

  • +1

    I will wait for BYD's Qin L

  • just buy a used mk 7.5. better build quality, and better entertainment.
also they can be had for well under half that.

Any Volkswagen /Golf cars for $29900 driveaway..no more to pay…

    • Yes

Just negotiate your state taxes as a discount with the seller. Winning.

  • I dunno, 60k for hatch back seems little steep

  • I think we'll have fuel in 10 years

    • +1

Of course we will - and anyone saying that we won't is talking out of their jacksie

    • -1

Yes. Toyota, Subaru and Mazda have just announced new development efforts for petrol engines. Maybe 30 years might see some changes.

  • I've been into hot hatches since I started to drive and although the current GTI is a nice car, it's no longer a hot hatch. The best you can get right now in Australia is the Hyundai I20N & I30N. Best bang for buck on the road. Sure, there's nice Subarus and Hondas banging around but they're too expensive. Abarth is great but probably too niche. I've had an I20N for 8 months and absolutely love it - one of the best cars I've ever owned, and I've owned a lot. At under $40k, it's a steal - if you can get one.

    • toyota yaris GR is a hot contender, or if you really want to live life dangerously (with repairs) Megane RS

      • Indeed. Forgot to mention the Yaris (which I'd happily own), GR Corolla too. They are expensive though. The RS is nice but as you say, potentially too much hassle. The French can do great cars - Peugeot 205 for instance.

    • I have an i30N premium and the main gripe I have with it is the quality of interior assembly - lots of creaks and rattle but genuinely fun car outside of that

      • +1

Fair enough. I've not had any issues like that yet but the car is still basically new. I've had a few small glitches with Android Auto bit that's it really. We've had a lot of rain in Perth this week and I've found that the factory fitted wiper blades are not that good. So I'll be replacing those.

The I20N is an insanely drivable car. The steering feedback when cornering hard is fantastic and rev matching is some kind of voodoo magic. There's an arrow straight road that I often drive on up North of Bullsbrook, where it's possible to get up to around 230kph. I cannot confirm whether I have driven at this speed or not, just that it's possible

  • +2

one for the purists. I remember a time when they were $40k DA..
