Wow the torrent of downvotes from concerned shoppers defending Insta360's honour!

        From Insta360's website:

"In order to protect your rights and interests, you need to activate X3 before using"

LOL, what? It's a camera. Turn on, press record. My phone has nothing to do with it. Except if the Chinese company wants a unique identifier for each buyer of its device including exact location. What next, the jar of peanut butter won't open until I activate it online lol!

    • says the person posting a public comment on the world wide web

      • +2

LOL, the web doesn't require I install a phone app to "protect my rights and interests" before posting a comment from my desktop PC!

Fair warning. There have been posts on forums about how the Insta360 cameras aren't all that waterproof.

    • +1

Further warning. Insta360 have been called out for intentionally asking content creators to not disclose sponsorships of their products!
Which is a pretty crappy move on Insta360's behalf.

    • Interesting to hear.. ive had an X3 for a few months and have been deliberating whether to get the dive case because their claims are its waterproof to 10m.

Can i ask if the consensus is a dive case is worth spending the money on (for the x3), and would the cheap ebay knock offs be just as good as the official one that goes for about $170? Thanks

      • +1

I stay away from underwater shots altogether with Insta360 X3. I've tried the official dive case, and the resulting video was awful. The video seemed to pick up strange glares, was murky and the water looked like it moved in a weird way. Older GoPro underwater footage is way better in comparison. So no, I wouldn't spend money on a dive case that costs $170 to shoot unwatchable video

        • Haha, appreciate your honesty, thanks

  • Thanks OP, pulled the trigger on one, did my research when it came out and was just waiting on a sale. Was a bit sooner than expected but super excited :)

      Congrats!

  • Nice. I've been umming and ahhing over 2nd hand models for a trip with my kids. Purchased thanks OP!
now off to aliexpress for the accessories.. :)

  • used dji action 3 and x2 for mario kart in tokyo and had better vids from x2.

Nice - I got mine on special for $809 (a few days after it was released) and have been using it up a storm here in Europe on holidays - it's been great

For those interested in using it with a quick release mount system - don't bother with their Insta360 Magnetic Quick Release Mount (or the knock off's like the VRIG Magnetic Quick Release insta360 Kit) - I have both - the idea is great but they are quite wobly when mounted (not that I think they'll detach but the camera wobbles on the end of the selfie stick)

I ended up going with the Ulanzi Falcam F22 Plate & Clamp/Base setup (there's a special Insta360 version - which is slightly narrower in one direction which I also got - but with the X4 it turns out it isn't necessary - the standard 22mmx22mm plate and base works fine and is still invisible (because the X4 is a few mm thicker than the X3) - in fact the standard 22mm plate fits better on the base of the X4 (doesn't twist) than their 22x19mm insta360 plate (which does twist) and you can slide the plate into the clamp in all four directions (vs 2 with the insta360 version)

I have a number of plates and bases attached to various things (e.g. a plate on the bottom of the camera & the bottom of the selfie stick and on a Ulanzi UURig R060 Super Clamp plus a clamp/base at the top of the selfie stick, and on the super clamp and on a small Arca swiss plate (so I can mount on top of my standard tripod with arca ballhead/clamp))

    • -1

      Ulanzi Falcam F22 Plate

looks very similar to Arca-Swiss so might be compatible with that gear

      • It looks similar but it's 22mm vs approx 38mm for the Arca gear

  • apart from this being an action camera i.e. waterproof, dustproof whatnot, how is this compared to Pocket 3?

I have the P3 and always wondered if i should have bought the insta360

    • +1

I would've thought the biggest diff is you will be able to record 360 footage/photos (for VR), as well as can function just like a normal action cam…

    • Depends on your use case, they are totally different cameras for different use cases.

Why the wonder? What are you desiring that the pocket 3 doesn't offer?

Pocket 3 is a great vlogging, video camera, the image quality is good (compared to insta360) Decent low light.

insta360 is a great 360 action cam, with the dust proofing etc. Fisheye look for close up, not as sharp images as pocket 3, but benefits from 360 deg "stablisied" footage.

      Maybe this helps https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_zvHfnXP4w

  • Thanks OP! Would it be possible to to ask JB online to price match?

    • Only one way to find out… Let us know!

      • +2

Just tried - they won't match coupons (even if publicly accessible), only base price.

        • thanks mate

    • +2

I never bother with JB anymore, they always seem to find a reason they can't match. The CEOs pronouncement to get the deal doesn't seem to align to the policies they have trained their staff in.

      • +2

This is it. I've tried getting them to price match a number of items now and they always say.. we don't match coupons.. we don't match that.. blah blah.. I used to buy from JB all the time but they are the last people I try now.. Better deals elsewhere and if I see a cheaper price… just buy it.. I won't waste their time and more importantly, I won't waste mine..

        • Exactly! The last straw was when I had them not price match Myer as they said it was a "clearance" price. Based on what? Myer still stocks the item… (was just Cards Against Humanity). I went next door to Myer and bought it, leaving behind the game I was going to buy from JB too (got it off Amazon next day delivery for the same price). It just pissed me off that they so desperately looked for an excuse and then still advertise lowest prices as part of their "everyday promise", but I haven't been successful in them following through last 5 or so times.

          • +1

@greennick: They actually did me a huge favour… Saw a ROG Ally for $1000 on ebay… chatted to JB for a pricematch… nope.. don't price ebay and coupons.. So I just let it go and didn't buy it..

About 4 weeks later, I saw a Legion Go for $950 on Bing Lee.. way, way better machine and would have been VERY annoyed had I got the Ally.. I thought the best price I'd get on a Legion was $1200ish..

  • Thank you OP, Going to Alaska with kids in less than 60 days. Hopefully i will make good use of this. TRS refund makes it much better value.

  • +7

Used mine for 4 weeks before returning it.

    • Overheats - covered in more truthful reviews. If you set it to 8k (2 x 4k) it overheats after a period of time. Mine was like 5-10 mins of contued use unless it was mounted high on a bike/car where the wind cooled it.
    • Underwater quality is pretty bad. It needs lots of light. For comparison, my iPhone 15PM shot far better video under water in a cheap plastic sealed bag case.
    • Crashes sometimes - not often but enough to be annoying and ruin shots/moments
    • Gained a major distaste for Insta360 after they were caught bullying reviewers to not say it was sponsored and even bribed many not to state was sponsored (rather than the law in Australia to state paid review/goods).
    • Phone App is good.
    • If you haven't used an Insta360 before expect a big learning curve on editing
    • Wasn't water tight as mentioned in posts. I had no damage but after being in water fixed at 2m max depth (rated to 10m) i had dampness/water in the battery compartment.
    • Works well in well lit environments - lowlight is very bad

Overall I wanted to love this, but between shitty results, crashes, overheating and poor water results, it's not a good camera. I hoped it was defective, but the replacement I got (after two weeks of owning it and replaced for a new) the issues persisted. 2/10 would not recommend.

    • Which version did you have x4 or an older model?

      • +1

X4. bought 6 weeks ago. Had a replacement after 2 weeks. That had similar issues. Lots of posts on the issues. The overheating is the main one. More common. The water issue could be bad luck, a bad seal etc.

Main gripe now is don't wanna give money to a seriously unscrupulous company in regards to paying off reviews. Theres a big difference to sending product and paying a known reviewer who says "This is paid" vs actively demanding reviewers don't declare it and paying them, sometimes more.

    • FYI for underwater use because it has really fisheye lenses I hear you basically have to use the dive case to get decent footage (the case caters for the intense optical distortion the water produces)

      • I did read that. I wasn't going to pump more money in to a device that wasn't up to the task. Annoying as I really wanted to like it. But its job is to record. Imagine putting it on a stick to walk 20 mins for a timelapse, and 1 in 3 times it didn't capture because it overheat. I get in winter, colder periods, with cold wind, on a bike/car etc it cools it. But thats all a compromise. One the X3 didn't have and is also not how its marketed nor sold.

        • Fingers crossed I havn't had any overheating or crashing issues yet - then again I havn't recorded any long 8K/30 videos (I've done a number of 5-10mins just walking around ones (I'm in Europe at the moment so it's heading towards summer here)). I have recorded a couple 2 hour stationary timelapses (in 11K/30/2 timelapse mode) with no issues

I don't have any earlier models so I have no frame of reference to compare

          • @Remorhaz: I could do some but mixed with issues. Seeing some people have no issues makes me wonder if there was a batch/production shift or something? Like some use chip from company A, others company B. If you've had no issues and doen that much, thats more than I managed.

Annoying too as had a replacement.

    • That's interesting. We purchased one for work and I used it for almost 60 mins straight (90% battery to 10% battery) at 8k / 24fps and there were no issued with overheating.

  • Hows does their software compare to GoPro? Im rocking a GoPro Hero 7 or 8 and have 2x snow trips planned, was considering getting latest model BUT go damn their software is shite.

  • Love this camera. Impulse bought one in Tokyo last year and totally changed how we remember our holidays. No one gets left out on pictures and videos.

    • +1

If last year it'd be the X3 not the X4?

  • Great, I am getting x3

    • is x3 superior in anyway or just in terms of pricing ?

      • +2

The x3 has a resolution of 5.7k, spread around a 360 ball of vision.

        X4 has 8k.

The unique thing with these cameras is in editing you can select a 16:9 window that looks in any direction withon that ball of vision.

So, that 16:9 footage will supposedly look sharper with the x4, but im not sure how much of a leap in quality it is up from the x3.

  • +1

    Appears to be sold out

    • Now out of stock.

    • Wierd as… at the time of writing, your post was written 44 mins ago.. I bought one about 50 mins ago with it saying that more than 10 were available. Would they really sell 10+ in like 10 mins… I reckon it was too cheap and DD pulled the listing..

    • damn was gonna get one but been um'ing and arr'ing then now it's gone :(

  • -1

    can match price at Jbhifi?

  • Is there any action camera without terrible software on the device? Seems like they all crash often and can be unresponsive. Would like something as reliable as my phone.

  • Is it same battery as X3?

    • No - it's a newer larger capacity battery on the X4

  • +2

For those who missed out, sign up for JB Hifi Perks, they're doing the "Wicked Wednesday" 10% off coupon deal which brings it down to $791.10.
Then use your hoarded 15% off JBHifi/TCN Gift Cards and that will bring it down further to $672.44.

    • Thanks! but now i am not sure if i still want to buy the x4 for the coming ski season, or just get an osimo 3 or 4 for much less…

      • I recommend the DJI Osmo Action 4. Great colour and sensor, never had it bug out or fail (used it every week for almost a year), even in 10m of water. DJI makes great gear.

        • Yes, I have the pocket 3 and action 1. Both work very well.m, except that action 1 has 1-2 sec delay

  • Been getting absolutely bombarded in every app for this device after looking into it

  • +1

For those that bought one.. has your order shipped yet?

    • I got a shipping notification with an aussie post tracking number about an hour after I ordered.
possibly on track for a 3 day delivery… (I'm in Melb)

    • I got mine delivered today. Within the little time i spent , the video looked pretty good and I'm very happy with it.

    • Mine hasn't shipped yet… even paid for upgraded express post shipping..

  • I've one bought the day it was released. And prior to that I owned an insta360 x3. The 360 degree recording is amazing, however be ready to edit the video on the app before you can share it with anyone.

I use mine to record my son's weekend soccer matches and whilst it's not very high resolution once zoomed in it captures all the action and excellent for teaching the kids positioning and tactics (which isn't possible without it). I place it on top of a 3m tripod and it allows me to enjoy the games whilst it's underway and worry about editing the right camera angles at home. I also use it in 8k and mount a fan to keep it from overheating.

    • curious to see how you mount the fan mate, could you please share? :) thx
