Man, as someone who benefits from Game Pass i just cannot believe one single game costs $100 these days, and THAT is apparently a bargain, wow lol.

    • +62

      But this one has booba.

      • +3

        I love booba tea, yuuuum!

      • HOLD, until it goes on discount

    • +15

This game looks great, but $100 is far from a bargain for it. Just Sony taking on a bit of a Nintendo attitude towards their first party games this generation with insane pricing that never seems to drop much.

      • Yeah, it's really disappointing how Sony are running this generation. We're what… nearly 4 years in now? By now they would usually have their "PlayStation Hits" or "Platinum" or whatever they call it (it seems to change every generation or two) where you can pick up the older games for $20-30, and then they'd end up on sale at JB or wherever for less than $10 occasionally. I bought the Uncharted trilogy remaster collection on PS4 for like $9, I think.

Even now, the PS5 launch titles are still basically full price unless they're having a sale which is never more than 50% off. This is probably a glimpse of the future now that XBox has the stench of death about it. Sony don't really have a lot of competition now, they and Nintendo have neatly divided the market up between the two of them and we're all going to be worse off as a result.

    • +15

I mean, there's a big difference between owning a physical copy and paying for a monthly subscription service.

Like ok your end experience is the same, but by that logic someone could come along as say "man, as someone who gets games for free off the internet I can't believe people pay for game pass"

      • Game pass is wise choice. I’m done with most of the games I own. I will not touch them anymore. And I didn’t even complete most of them.

        • +24

          Gamepass is literally destroying Xbox

          • +1

@His_Holiness: Xbox is gambling on a long term strategy.

Is it the correct one? I don't know, I'm not smart enough to definitively say either way but you can see the reasoning behind it.

Games are costing more and more, Last of Us 2 cost $220 million dollars to make, Horizon Forbidden West cost $200+ million to make and both those games were in development for 5 years before they were able sell a product. Did they make a profit? Yeah they did but I would say they are the exception. There are so many other games where money is sunk into the project, only for it to be a flop (Suicide Squad) or to be cancelled (Deus Ex, Twisted Metal, Overwatch 2 PVE content). Even for cancelled titles, costs would still be in the millions of dollars spent with nothing to show for it.

Xbox is gambling on building a service where they pay publishers a fee to put their games on their service for a period of time in the hopes that people join up to play that title and either enjoy the service and keep the subscription going or forget to unsubscribe once they're done with that game. I know of plenty of people who pay for GamePass even though they prioritise their Playstation, Switch or PC for games, yet still pay the monthly subscription to GamePass.

In the end of the day, it's Xbox executives gambling on a strategy.

            • +3

@stenchlord: Games are expensive to make, but Call of Duty and other AAA will be expensive with or without GamePass. If anything it’ll result in the price of GamePass going up as it’s not a model that is contributing to the shrinking of development costs. Not sure how much higher it can go before people really turn away.

The problem for MS is their console is lagging so far behind Sony, with some recent data suggesting they are being outsold 5:1, that GamePass subscriptions are rapidly stagnating. They need to find a way to get GamePass onto PlayStation I’d say, otherwise they’re stuck in a nasty position where they’ve banked on a subscription service that primarily has a console audience, but that audience isn’t growing fast enough.

The fact they’re shipping games on PlayStation is probably very much a response to stagnation of GamePass and Xbox as a whole and them needing customers from elsewhere. It’s a move I think further reduces the need for people to buy an Xbox, which then hurts GamePass more.

Don’t see this all working out well for MS to be honest.

              • @Smigit: Development costs will always continue to rise as cost of living rises and employees need to be paid more, that's not going to change and Xbox know it won't. Acquiring studios and publishing companies like Activision are short term plans to bring more customers into the service.

Xbox have ultimately decided the cost of acquiring Activision Blizzard was worth the cost because:

1: The games they have control over bring in a lot of money.
2: They have far wider mass market appeal.

They aren't trying to please core gamers (as much as they keep saying they are), they want more casual gamers. They want your average joe who just jumps on his phone and plays Candy Crush, Clash of Clans or Warzone and play on their commutes to and from work, those who don't mind spending $1-$2 each time they jump on to play cause that cost is seemingly inconsequential to them.

Xbox is definitely lagging behind Playstation in hardware sales and Playstation made $30 billion in 2023 BUT Xbox still made $18 billion in 2023 and they did this despite their hardware being outsold 5:1 as you claim.

If I had to guess, their long term goals are to just build out their cloud service and sell to EVERYONE, regardless of the platform they are on. This way they don't need to spend millions in R&D to make consoles, they can essentially outsource building streaming handhelds to companies like Logitech or Razer. It will mean not needing to pay to develop games (although I'm sure they'll still do it but maybe not in the realms of spending hundreds of millions on a single title), instead paying fees to license titles on their service and just building apps to work on other devices.

Considering the EU has been pushing companies like Apple to allow for third party installations, it wouldn't surprise me if the same happened to the gaming console market.

I don't know if it's going to work and even if it does, whether or not it'll be good for gamers (or at least the traditional type of gamer that I'd associate myself with being) or for games preservation (hard to preserve games that are only available in the cloud or are live service titles) but I can kinda see what they're going for.

20 years ago if you'd told people they'd be paying $26/month to watch movies and TV series but they don't get to choose what's available, that any of that content could disappear from the service (even if they were in the middle of watching a TV series) and that they wouldn't own anything no matter how much or how long they paid for the service, people would have told you that you were nuts.

EDIT: In regards to the cost of GamePass, they'll keep pushing it until customers push back. How much are people willing to pay for Netflix? The price still keeps going up despite less and less subscribers paying for the service.

          • @His_Holiness: Gamepass is literally destroying Xbox, as intended. Gamepass is an initiative competing against the traditional model that is Xbox/Sony/Nintendo. It's designed to infect traditional customers and transition them into "mobile customers." One who turn their nose up at properly priced games exclusively in favour of free 2 play, ad ridden, low complexity and IQ cancer.

The whole goal being that you get to fully kill the 2nd hand market and property rights. Kill off properly segmented generations, so new generations don't have to compete with the old established ones (no value proposition necessary; planned obsolesce optimised). Most importantly take away the customers right to decide which studio/publisher they want to support directly (so long Tango).

Gamepass/Netflix/Spotify are, respectfully, the most disgusting tumors on the media landscape.

        • +6

I’m done with most of the games I own. I will not touch them anymore.

I mean, OK, maybe that's a good deal for you.

If I'm done with a physical game I can just sell it and basically get my money back.

          • @Odin: I’ve been through that. Selling games on gumtree and FB. Low ballers hagglers, want exchange, scammers etc just not worth the hassle. I’d leave games to rot.

      • +1

There's also a big difference between one game, and 400 games for 6 months for the same price, lol. I know i'll get downvoted but honestly that is the value comparison. You can keep your one game physical copy mate, i'll take the 400 digital.

        • +2

Different value propositions. I've got Game Pass on Xbox and a PS5 and use the PS5 a lot more - my play time is more of a limit than budget so I'd rather pay to play something I really want to play than pick something that sounds alright.

(That said I can't wait to get stuck into Hellblade 2 later this week)

        • +6

          I ain't got time for 400 games.

Most of the games on gamepass are like $2 used. You could probably buy a bundle of 30 games for $50 and have a years worth of enjoyment.

          • +2

@Odin: Yeah, pretty much no time as well.
99999999 free games doesn't mean anything to me.
I have to pick and choose carefully which ones I can play

          • +2

@Odin: Bro your claims like $2 used is too exaggerating. I used to be like you - physical only, sell afterwards, I despised game pass and psn. Gaming as a hobby its expense really isn’t that much. I pirate, buy and sub games now. Pc GP is actually pretty good with lots of big day 1 and aaa after 1 year. Jedi survivor, remnant 2, diablo 4, dead space, persona 3 reload etc you can’t get them at $2

          • @Odin: Any decent game I can get for $2? serious question cos I don’t have gamepass

            • @bheart: Depends where you're located.

Vinnie's might have some near you. Or Facebook marketplace.

eBay has bundles of games, just search "Xbox one bundle".

I got games like far cry, Forza, COD, dying light, VERY cheap.

The crackdown games are actually free on the Xbox online store (no need to pay a subscription or anything)

        • Just like buffet, you don’t own all the food, one or two plates is all you can eat.The quality of these two plates food is what you should value compared to the food in other restaurants for the same price.

    • +2

not a bargain but I still bought it at 109… for it being the game that was made to make me happy. not to bullshit me of the political correctness

    • PS3 games used to launch at $120 back in 2007

    • +2

Game pass is making small studios (ironically studios like the stellar blade dev) to get shuttered by Microsoft left and right cause people wont buy the game anymore

    • +3

Man, as someone who knows microsoft and their history and how unsustainable game pass is, and that they've got people hooked on it to realize this, and killing off physicals at the same time, only to then yank it and force you to pay this much for a digital copy when they start excluding stuff, up the price of game pass or just nuke it later on….. yeah…. physicals are awesome and leave you with something, where as when game pass dies, you get nothing.

    • +2

worth nothing the majority of gamers get a handful of games a year. so if u have someone who only plays fortnight, fifa and 2 other AAA games (starfield, spiderman, hogwarts legacy etc) its not much of a deal in the end unless they are all specifically on gamepass.

enthusiast gamers then yeah, i have game pass and PS+ Extra but i still also bought dragons dogma 2 and FF7 rebirth already this year.(and balatro)

  • +4

    Thanks for the post mate

    …however, $99 is a regular price for a recent-ish Ps5 game on Amazon Au lately…

    Tekken 8FFVII Rebirth

    • +5

Stellar Blade launched at $109 and is still at that price at JB.

  • Games are taking longer and longer to come down in price after sometime has passed. The 1st party Sony games are staying high this gen. I've been having to buy used on eBay just to get them at $60-70

    • I've been having to buy used on eBay just to get them at $60-70

      Australian versions?

Any reliable/ consistent seller with clean + good condition recent games on eBay that you can recommend? (I’m new to eBay - it feels like the ‘Wild West’ most of the times in there)

      • +2

Yes, Australian local versions of games. I don't have any recommendations for sellers. I generally go with someone posting good photos and look at their feedback. You can tell if they are dodgy or reliable. Sometimes you get lucky with a bid and get something fairly cheap. Its not incredible bargain but I only just picked up an excellent condition version of Spider-Man 2 for $60 with free postage. Considering the game is still over $100 at retail, I was pleased.

  • +2

    Same price at Big W.

  • +11

    I'll wait until it's below $50

    • +5

In no ‘stellar’ rush as well….it will likely be heavily discounted once the hype dwindles.

    • If God Of War Ragnarok is any indication, you will be waiting for a long time.

I probably just skip it. I must be the only one who did not like the demo

  • +3

I got the game with the trade two pay $49 deal at EB. Fantastic combat and OST, beautiful world and an interesting story. Would rate it 9/10 easily. Totally worth it at that. Would never pay $100 (99) for a game though.

  • Remember to price match @ jb and use discounted gift cards and perks voucher for maximum savings!

  • +1

Platinum already and seriously apart from eve, the combat, music, story are all great.
However, I agree the current price for PS5 title is being ridiculous…Since spiderman 2, it's been outrages for a while…

  • I believe Aussie version doesn't have JP voice.

And I'm waiting for another $18 price error. (If possible)

    • +11

It has Korean voice and seeing as it's a Korean game it makes sense.

      • +3

Honestly the Koreans are making a stand in the game space with quality titles like Lies of P and now this.

      • -2

Still! It may not have JP voice !!

        • Who is dumb enough to not get it….?

    • 🤦‍♂️

  • +1

Can anyone figure out how to get it with an AU account from Amazon Japan?

I bought it there locally (awesome game btw!), currently using the bunny suit 😁

$142.57 from Amazon Japan. Not sure why you'd want that?

      • Or use a parcel redirection service and buy from Amazon JP. I got mine around $80 for the game and $15 for international shipping.

      • +1

only the JP ver has JP voices. also, only the JP ver has compatible saves with all other regions.

        • Even but it's shipped from from Amazon Japan warehouse and sold through the Amazon Australia web site. It's not the JP version. The product details says the language is English only. The ASIN number B0CTVK7GBM points to the English version. It's actually the English version. So you're not getting the JP version from this. It's just the English version being over priced.

  • -1

This game is worth about $20. Way overhyped.

  • +2

    OzBargain? Nah. OzSpensive.

  • -7

Really reaching by putting up deals for $99 games after they came down from $109 😂

    • -1

The down votes are hilarious 😂

  • Why would I buy it for $99 when I can get it for $124.95 at EB: https://www.ebgames.com.au/product/ps5/304479-stellar-blade

  • EB recently had this for $39 with two trade ins. Not sure if still going though.

    • Nah, those trade deals normally end a week after the release date.

  • +1

    $99 for some booba

  • assss

  • After 8 months, Lies of P best price so far is 30% off, I guess this one will be the same, $69 would be the best price before Christmas.

    • +1

After 4 years sekiro hardly goes for under $50

      • Low print (at least in PAL) + it's published by Activision.

  • Man I remember when I could get new release games from JB HI FI $20 cheaper than EB Games back in the day… a game like this would of been $89 at JB HI FI now they are on par with EB Games pricing module which is a bummer (Even tho this game is $125 at EB Games what the actual F???).

Us Australians are getting ripped off so bad these days it's ridiculous.

  • +3

ill wait till this ends up in the bargain bin. or $2 at cash converters

  • +1

Looks like a quality game, but this ain't a bargain.

  • +1

I’ve been holding off buying this because I can’t bring myself to spend $100 on a game. If I can get JB to price match I can use my $10 b’day voucher to get it for $89, that might be a bit more palatable…
Does anyone know if JB also price matches staff/rewards programs from Big W?

  • +1

    Game has good assets

  • Can the game be played with one hand?

  • +1

It'll be on PS Plus in a year's time.

  • -1

I managed to play this for a good chunk of time yesterday….

I feel this game is currently being lauded as a hit out of desperation - sadly because of the circumstances surrounding the current PS5 gaming landscape (or lack of) ….

If the PS5 was not suffering from an embarrassing anemia in its exclusive gaming lineup or release schedule - this game would be at best seen as a great second or third tier game….(for instance: remove the titles obvious hyper-over sexualised females drama theme and you’re left with an average good gaming experience - similar to an average PS2 or PS3 title)

Whilst it is still good game, mind, it sadly does not even come close to the heavy-mega hitting titles that came out on PS4, PS3 or PS2 at a similar time period as the PS5 is at in its life right now. (The PS5 is almost 4 years old at the moment, and it’s 1st parties or exclusives are severely still lacking/ absent/ not released in good frequency - or in vast variety or/ and at high quality fun production fitting of its ‘next gen’ status….GT6 seems like it will be one of few titles that will be deserving of that status in my opinion.)

    • +1

Not sure why this is being negged, just finished it, it's an average game at best, don't care for either side of the sexualised debate, doesn't bother or excite me. Played lies of P through 3 times, last solo game I played, no desire to play this game again now it's finished.

      • Lies of p was amazing. I played it once but God that was a stressful and fun journey. Beating puppet master was probably the most rewarding fight in video game history

  • Welp this deal should be counted as "Expired" Amazon increased the price by $10 and same as Big W. It's now priced at $109 on both websites. Now they have matched their price with JB HI FI and other stores.

Soon every game will be normally $109 going forward now. The day of getting cheap games has ended :(. Only Indie games will be priced under $100 now.

    • Why not mark it as expired yourself then?

      • I don't know how. I was looking before I even typed my comment but thanks to whoever did it.
