I'd buy it if I hadn't already fallen for the initial switch release that runs a bit poor. Ah well.

    • did the second switch release run better at least?

  • Hmm buy it now or wait to see if it will drop any further.

Got this on day one for $109.95

An absolute steal for top-notch JRPG!

    • Same. This and Metaphor Day 1, great games for my taste.

I liked metaphor more than smt v. But one thing that annoys me is that the game doesn't let you wrap things up after finishing the game. You have to start the whole story again to gather missed collectibles

  • Golden week is at the end of the month and there are usually big jrpg sales then, I'm hoping for a cheap pc version with dlc.
I'd rather have the pc version, even though I have a switch #performance.
The dlc for the game will at best cost another $15 for a total of $50, which is the real number to beat.

I'm of two minds about this.

I prefer PC because that's just a better platform, especially now that steam is running good on Linux, which means that we can also extend the purchase to arm PC's and eventually phones, with wine and proton support.

However, physical cart makes my monkey brain happy.

Are we going to get a performance boost on swtich 2? don't mind if it's a free or paid upgrade

    • +1

There's no guarantee it'll even work on the Switch 2

    • In the sense of higher fps or resolution? Not likely, Zelda is example of needing to buy the same game for performance increase.

      Stable 30fps though, definitely.

    • Generally, you can expect the third party games on Switch 2 perform similarly as game’s PS4 version. If AAA game doesn’t have last gen version to begin with, I don’t think it will run well on switch 2 or release at all.

      • There is no evidence to support anything you just claimed.

        • Huh ? Cyberpunk, Elden Ring , FF VII remake are sitting in the showroom for playtest currently ,check YouTube videos. I’m not the one who say that. Next gen Switch has been targeting ps4 performance we all know that for years.

    • Depends on Atlus if they want to go back and release a Switch 2 version. The way Switch backward compatibility works on Switch 2 is through an emulation layer of sorts, so just putting the SMTV:V cart into the Switch 2 (or loading it up the digital version) isn't likely going to deliver much in terms of performance improvements without a proper upgrade.

  • Is this similar to Persona series just with different story?

    • I played the original SMT V. SMT mainline series stories are all fairly barebones story-wise, I would not go in expecting a persona experience. Only play it if you love the gameplay. Can't comment on the new vengeance storyline.

    • this game is epic!

      100% recommend.

    • Persona is actually a spin off series of Shin Megami Tensei. They're both turned based JRPG's however the story for SMT heavily relies around religion and demons whereas Persona doesn't.

    • The scope and focus is very different.

Mainline SMT games in general are set in post-apocalyptic worlds, where the overall progression of the game is more in line with traditional JRPGs, and the main story will eventually diverge into ~3 (Law/Neutral/Chaos) endings where the outcome of the entire world (or even multiverse) changes depending on who you side with.

Modern Persona games (P3 onwards) are more "personal" stories with much lower stakes (at least initially), and the overall progression is a mix of JRPG and time management sim. Typically only has one true ending each game, and one or maybe two false endings.

      P.S.
SMT V: Vengence has an entirely new story route that you select at the start of the game (Creation = original route, Vengence = new route).
They start off almost identically in the first area, but diverges from there until you reach entirely new endings.

  • Thanks OP, bought a copy for Switch
