    OMG!
New migrant bashing, get an uber job, earn the least and be hit with a $5 fee after a year.
Be a slave for a $50 promise if you care to sign for agreeing to take it away from you again.

My dad is here on visitor visa, plans to be visiting frequently and looking for a bank account. If anyone has experience in using this offer in a visitor visa (or any other banks new account deals) pls share your thoughts. Thanks!

Let me create a promo for only people here for more than 12 months, or only people born here, and get my anus handed to me.

Another example of places using racism, but it being accepted…

Yey more migrants! "just" 1.6 million extra in the next 4 years and everyone's flocking to Sydney and Melbourne. I love my recycle bin, zoo land, 3rd world dumping ground, identityless experimental island 🥰

    • -2

According to Britannica, an island is a mass of land that is both “entirely surrounded by water” and also “smaller than a continent.” By that definition, Australia can’t be an island because it’s already a continent.

So much hate towards migrants from such a small offering

I understand the idea of it being terrible that local Australians are excluded from an offer but if this was offered to most of us would we really think it a good offer?

Migrants won't be able to open an account online so there'd be a lot more faffing around and the fact that Australian citizens can open an account in seconds to minutes online would likely be one of many reasons why they don't offer it to everyone.

Not saying I'm in favour of excessive migration but that is not related to this 'deal'

    • Skeletor here is a migrant and doesn't like this approach.

    • +1

so many things new migrants can't apply or are eligible for and nobody bats an eye, westpac offers a measly $50 to new migrants and everybody loses their minds.

Westpac doing a better job than CBA Yello for the billions in profits CBA is making and keeping. Shameful.

Bank welcome bonuses in Australia are ridiculous. I just opened a Citi account in the US and was rewarded $300 USD just for depositing twice, totaling $1,500, and leaving the money in the account for 30 days.

      • +8

Thought it's pretty good in AU until now…

      • +1

@T-man which Citi acct you opened?
Is this for Foreign pple only?

        • +1

No, everyone can apply, mine is Access Checking account, link

          • @T-man: so that's a $5/month service fee for keeping it open :/

curious how you did the deposits? because just giving the teller money isn't counted

            • @CereaL: I used Zelle (the equivalent of PayID here) from my other account back and forth—very easy and simple.

              • @T-man: Helps when you have 2 accounts … ;)

                Thanks for the info though

Are you an American citizen? If not, how do you get a SSN as a visitor?

        • +1

I applied in-branch using my Aussie passport and driver's license, they don't require a SSN

          • @T-man: And if you want to close it you gotta go back in the branch again?

          • @T-man: Are you on a tourist visa?

            • @ozilicious: I don’t need and I don’t have a tourist visa, just used my Aussie passport.

              • @T-man: Cheers, was wondering if it'd work for someone on a tourist visa

          • @T-man: Do you need a US address to get the card mailed to you?

      • +2

credit card welcome bonus is much better there as well.

        • +1

Not really, they’re usually one welcome bonus for lifetime as opposed to 18/12months here.

      • +1

That is very true their bonuses are usually more than at least US$300 and on occasion more than US$1000 which equates to AU$1500. For $50 bank bonus to be a deal here is ridiculous really

    • I’m new here, thank you OP.

    • I have St. George bank account and it's owned by Westpac. It doesn't matter, right? Never open Westpac account … I got the St. George bank account because of $50 bonus too.

    • This will cover 1/5 of the cost of getting my European passport

    • "The offer is available for customers who are new to Australia (arrived in the last 12 months) and over 18 years of age. Customers must hold a valid foreign issued identification document in our Pdf File identification checklist (PDF 657KB)"

No chance Westpac actually ends up honouring the people who are going to seek to exploit the T&Cs…

      • On the linked page it says

        What you'll need
An ID document such as your passport, Medicare card or driver licence (with photo and full name).

any foreigner can get an aussie license

    • Anyone who isn't a new arrival managed to get the $50? 😂

      • +1

        maybe with McLovin ID

      • Any luck getting the $50 folks?

    • +2

Opened this last night but application still in progress 75%. Selected yes for 'Did you arrive in Australia in the last 12 months?'

Already have a Westpac business account and was giving an error when trying to open saying No to 'Are you already a Westpac customer?' so I had to sign in. So no ID was asked and as I remember I did not submit a foreign passport for my business account just the drivers license

Lets see if I get the $50, even if not its worth for the Shopback bonuses as business card doesn't work

      • Very interested how if you get it

    • +2

I'm new to Australia for 9 years now. Will try my luck. Thx OP!
