ooh tempting - i've got a telstra smart modem gen2, bumping up 250 nbn plan next month and thought might need something like this to get more oomph..

I'm only small apartment tho.. but AX was interesting but now wifi7 too..

    • Telstra smart modem gen 2 can do around 950Mbps wired and 500-800Mbps on Wi-Fi 5.

    • +2

Wifi 7 is a whole completely different price range, they start around $400 and really shine on specific high performance use cases, honestly with NBN I feel it'd be like driving a Ferrari on a dirt road!

      • The dirt road is improving. 2Gbps is coming to FTTP and HFC.

        • Interesting, didn't realise HFC could go that high

          • @softwhite: It supported 1Gbps for a long time that's what I had back in France about 10 years ago, now they offer symetric 8Gbps in France

But yeah DOCSIS 3.1 will allow HFC to support 8Gbps just ignore the fact that it's a 10 years old technolgy, good job NBN team!

    • I also have the same Telstra one. What would this router do better if I'm on 100mbps plan? Or not really worthwhile

  • I have an average dodo home wifi that doesn't really cover the whole house. If I plugged it into this would i get better coverage in my home. Im old, so be gentle.

    • +2

While it may give you a slightly better range but it won't cover the whole house.

You want a few mesh routers for that, depending of the size of your house get either the 3 pack
      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/184468100751
      Or 2 pack
      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/184378087339
      And $10 off with MAYSAV

One replaces your router and the other(s) go where you have still some good reception but close to the area you want to improve reception

      • Worth noting that the E4 has a top speed of 100mbps. Given the state of NBN, you likely won't have an issue with that cap, but if you know that your area is getting upgrades, it might be worth considering.

      • Thanks so much for helping out.

    • It depends on the size and shape of your house, so YMMV, but my AX1800 covers the whole 4-bedroom house (single storey). It's not even at the centre of the house.

  • If I want to move away from TPG to another NBN supplier… Will this do the trick for me? Cheers

    • Yes, you wire it through the Wan port to the NBN box and then it's just a matter of changing the logins/connection details in the router to match your provider.

    • You might not need another router at all. I was able to just reflash my VR1600v so that I can remove TPG stuff but I think that wasn't essential. Have done this twice now.

I got one of these refurbs and it was faulty

    • +4

I wouldn't trust Refurb for routers. The savings isn't worth it.

      • The ACL covers you they have to replace if it's faulty

Dealing with catch for issues is very problematic. They used to be ok about 15 years ago but last few years they just make it so difficult I end up not bothering.

Asus RT-AX82U AX5400 is also a good option at around $192 delivered using TECHMAY code ($20 off)
It has better speed, specs, can install AsusWrt Merlin.
Condition: Opened – never used. I will confirm what it means, once I receive mine.

    • $60 makes it 40% more expensive bit much, also the 4808Mbps is a marketing gimmick. The router does support it but your receiving device has to support it to and it works with 4 (or maybe 8 can't remember) spatial streams however no consumer device really supports it not even any of Apple's latest devices they only do 2

    • Any update on this one?
Interested in the same model, wondering if it's worth getting an opened one.

I will update in 2-3 days.

I got RT-AX82U for $192 delivered. It was not retail box packaging. Normal cardboard box with router, AU plug, ethernet cable.
The router had some scratch marks on it. But the inner parts/circuit board did not have dust on it…
If there were no scratches on router, it would have looked as good as new. I was bit confused overall whether the router was "opened but never used" or "used" one.
It had koolshare chinese firmware/OS, which I updated to latest OS firmware. Overall the router functioned perfectly and provided quite better coverage than my Netcomm NF18ACV.
The Router also had channel above 140, which are not present in EU/German purchases(as claimed in some posts).

But I returned it due to 3 points. 1) The condition did not seem "opened but never used". 2) The koolshare firmware means somebody was using it 3) The Manufacturing year was 2021 which is bit too old. I assume that "opened but never used" would not remain on shelf for such long time.

Returns are not possible. But I contacted seller with these points and requested if return was possible. Seller informed me that the listing already has details like scratches, koolshare etc. But he still graciously accepted return and gave me return label. So, I give seller 10/10 for service. But I assume he might not be that kind each time or to everyone if this repeats.

I will wait for few months or black Friday to get a good deal on new RT-AX82U (as my existing router is working fine). But If no deal comes through, I might buy it again from this seller.

        • Interesting, thanks for the detailed info.

  • As good as an 86U Pro so definitely a bargain.
